Compression Testing And Failure Modes Of Steel-Concrete Composite (Sc) Structures For Nuclear Containment, Patrick Michael Wanamaker, Amit H. Varma Oct 2013

Compression Testing And Failure Modes Of Steel-Concrete Composite (Sc) Structures For Nuclear Containment, Patrick Michael Wanamaker, Amit H. Varma

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Although being able to provide much cleaner power than burning coal and other fossil fuels, nuclear power plants are still a tough sell to the general public due to their history of being spontaneously dangerous. The containment structures surrounding these nuclear plants, however, can play a huge role in reducing the risks associated with them. Relatively new designs for these containment assemblies, known as SC (steel-concrete composite) structures, aim to increase the strength and durability of the containment facilities while keeping costs down. By varying the spacing between shear studs, the ratio of concrete to steel, and the ratio of …

Quantitative Measurement Of Intuitiveness Of Visualization Techniques, Jeongjoon Boo, Ji Soo Yi Oct 2013

Quantitative Measurement Of Intuitiveness Of Visualization Techniques, Jeongjoon Boo, Ji Soo Yi

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

More and more visualizations and infographics are being adopted as a part of data communication (e.g., news articles and personal blogs) because they can not only present more details succinctly but also allow viewers explore data by themselves. However, when an information provider needs to decide which type of graphs, there is not much reliable information out there. For example, we do not know what portion of general public understands how to comprehend a type of graph, such as a scatter plot, without any explanation. Thus, the aim of this project is to quantify the level of intuitiveness of different …

Simulation Of Beam Dynamics For Mems Devices, Saagar Unadkat, Devon Parkos, Alina Alexeenko

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) are systems made up of small components to complete a bigger goal. Some of these components can be modeled as small beams, which are anchored at both sides, or as cantilever beams. These beams can be subjected to various forces such as Knudsen Forces, Electrostatic Forces as well as G-loading. These devices have many applications such as sensors, actuators and even as accelerometers for airbags, smart phones and game controllers. Modeling the dynamics of these beams is an important task for the MEMS community, consisting of researchers, fabricators, and designers working on one of the many applications …

Kinetic Monte Carlo Simulations, Jingyuan Liang, R. Edwin García, Ding-Wen (Tony) Chung, David Ely

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) is a set of scientific libraries designed to deploy kMC simulations intended to simulate the time evolution of some processes occurring in nature. kMC is currently allows the user to intuitively generate single component crystal lattices to simulate, post process, and visualize the kinetic Monte Carlo-based atomistic evolution of materials. kMC provides an interface to the Stochastic Parallel PARticle Kinetic Simulator (SPPARKS) [1] and is specifically designed to simulate individual atomic deposition (condensation) and dissolution (evaporation) events, while simultaneously tracking the surface and bulk crystallographic anisotropic diffusion. The main goal of this project is to create …

Advancement Of Legged Locomotion Models By Including Nonlinear Damping, Ian Abraham, Zhuohua H. Shen, Justin E. Seipel Oct 2013

Advancement Of Legged Locomotion Models By Including Nonlinear Damping, Ian Abraham, Zhuohua H. Shen, Justin E. Seipel

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Accurately predicting human locomotion has been a goal of various mathematical models. Early canonical models of locomotion were developed to predict the basic features of ground reaction forces (GRF). More recently, modified hip actuated and leg damped locomotion models have been developed to better predict the stability and robustness of human and animal locomotion. Such improvements have resulted in the loss of the characteristic GRF predicted by earlier models. Historically, GRF are among the most common measures to experimentally study human locomotion. Thus, it is important to develop new mathematical models that predict both accurate stability of motion, as well …

Modeling Target Disinfection By-Product Dynamics In Indoor Swimming Pools, Barnard S. Mondal, Cary Troy, Mehrnaz Afifi, Shih-Chi Weng, Ernest R. Blatchley Iii Oct 2013

Modeling Target Disinfection By-Product Dynamics In Indoor Swimming Pools, Barnard S. Mondal, Cary Troy, Mehrnaz Afifi, Shih-Chi Weng, Ernest R. Blatchley Iii

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Chlorination is the primary disinfection method for swimming pools in the United States; however, chlorine also reacts with pollutants (e.g., sweat, urine and anthropogenic compounds) to form disinfection by-products (DBPs). Some DBPs are asthma causing (e.g. nitrogen-trichloride) and even carcinogens (e.g., trihalomethanes and nitrosamines). Consequently, exposure to DBPs poses health risks to patrons and staff in pool environments. Furthermore, volatilization of DBPs is enhanced by bather activity, but the relationship between activity and volatilization has yet been quantified such that the dynamic behavior of DBPs can be predicted. Therefore, the objective of this research is to …

Validation Of Long-Fiber Thermoplastic Composite Models, Christian A. Vuong, Megan Kinney, Michael Sangid

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

With increased pressure to reduce energy consumption, long-fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites (LFTs) are of interest to aerospace and automotive industries due to their light weight in combination with other desirable mechanical properties and ease of manufacturing to replace common materials such as aluminum and magnesium. However, the performance of LFTs is highly dependent on microstructural variables such as fiber length and orientation, which are heavily influenced by the manufacturing process. Accurately predicting these factors would allow for more rapid advances in LFTs by reducing the experiments needed for certification and decreasing expenses. While models that serve this purpose exist, the …

Improvement On Cylinder-To-Cylinder Variation In Pcci Engines Using Variable Start Of Injection And Exhaust Valve Closing Timings, Aðalsteinn Axelsson, Greg Shaver Oct 2013

Improvement On Cylinder-To-Cylinder Variation In Pcci Engines Using Variable Start Of Injection And Exhaust Valve Closing Timings, Aðalsteinn Axelsson, Greg Shaver

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Premixed charge compression ignition (PCCI) is widely considered to be a possible method of meeting increasingly strict emissions regulations in internal combustion engines. PCCI can reduce harmful emissions substantially and at the same time increase efficiency relative to conventional combustion modes. Because of the nature of PCCI, changes in in-cylinder conditions have a greater impact than in conventional diesel engines. Therefore cylinder to cylinder variations are amplified which leads to problems such as misfire and decreased efficiency in cylinders with increased ignition delay and lower apparent heat release rate (AHRR) amplitudes. Two possible methods to counteract this effect in diesel …

To develop or test the control method under real road and off-road conditions, a platform that could simulate the movement and vibration of the crane truck is desired. To design and build the multi-operation platform, a design process includes brain storming, design selection, FEA (Fundamental Element Analysis), mechanical sizing, hydraulic sizing and Bill of Material is required and preferred. After going through all the steps …

Thermophotovoltaic System Efficiency Simulation, Qingshuang Chen, Roman Shugayev, Peter Bermel Oct 2013

Thermophotovoltaic System Efficiency Simulation, Qingshuang Chen, Roman Shugayev, Peter Bermel

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Thermophotovoltaic (TPV) power systems, which convert heat into electricity using a photovoltaic diode to collect thermal radiation, have attracted increasing attention in recent work. It has recently been proposed that new optical structures such as photonic crystals can significantly improve the efficiency of these devices in two ways. First, the electronic bandgap of the TPV diode should match the photonic bandgap of the emitter, in order to ensure that the majority of emitted photons can be converted. Second, a photonic crystal short-pass optical filter can be added to the front of the TPV diode to send long wavelength photons back …

Database For Solar Energy Group, Lei Zhong, Rakesh Agrawal

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Copper zinc tin sulfide (CZTS) is the abundant quaternary semiconducting compound which could be used to make solar thin film. Even though its efficiency is lower than the silicon based film, the cost of CZTS solar film will be lower compared to the current silicon based film. Therefore it is really worth to do research and make improvement on its efficiency. So far, the solar energy group already collected a great bunch of data, which could be employed to guide the future experiment. Hence, it is really necessary to build a database to arrange the information we got. Our project …

The Stability And Control Of The Single Track Vehicles, Shyngys Karimov, Martin Corless

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Bicycles, motorcycles and scooters are all examples of the single track vehicles. The dynamics of the single track vehicle involve many degrees of freedom and various modes which govern its performance, making a complicated and interesting research topic. Motorcycle in motion can roll, yaw, and steer about the steering axis. It has three main modes which determine the motion and stability of it, they are weave, capsize, and wobble. The motorcycle performance is limited by the behavior of its modes, and if even one of the modes becomes unstable, the vehicle will roll over, and crash. The goal of this …

Piezo -electric materials are materials that will change its shape and size when an electric field is applied to the material. Vice versa, these materials will generate a certain voltage when they are bent, vibrated, or deformed. These materials show promising future , because they link mechanical and electrical properties of a material. In 21st century when electronic devices such as smart phones or touch-screen TV’s depend highly on mechanical input such as human’s touch, developing and researching materials that can link the mechanical and electrical properties can greatly improve the quality of i-phones. The main challenge regarding piezo-electric …

The Effects Of Exogenous Extracellular Matrix And Substrate Stiffness On Mouse Tendon Cells In Vitro, Caleb J. Mcdaniel, Sarah Calve Oct 2013

The Effects Of Exogenous Extracellular Matrix And Substrate Stiffness On Mouse Tendon Cells In Vitro, Caleb J. Mcdaniel, Sarah Calve

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

To improve the treatment of musculoskeletal injuries, a better understanding of the transitional environment in which progenitor cells form mature musculoskeletal constructs is necessary. This need arises because injury repair requires restructuring of tissue, similar to the initial tissue construction that occurs during embryonic development by progenitor cells. Differences in both the biochemical and mechanical environments between a transitional and a differentiated state are known to take place, but how these differences affect cell behavior had not yet been characterized in mammalian tendon cells. In order to investigate this, we have determined the effects of exogenous extracellular matrix and the …

Many people suffer from amputation, which affects their lives severely by disabling them from doing chores in their daily life as well as chores related to work and leisure. For the last years, prosthetics’ development has been fast and the devices that are being used now are a miracle compared to what has been used before. But still, the battle is not over yet. Although scientists have techniques and devices to use nerve residues from the amputated limb to control the prosthetic, smaller devices that can detect the signals from those nerves better need to be developed. In this research …

Developing A Crystal Viewer Tool For Nanohub, Osiris V. Ntarugera, Gerhard Klimeck Oct 2013

Developing A Crystal Viewer Tool For Nanohub, Osiris V. Ntarugera, Gerhard Klimeck

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Most materials found in nature have their atoms arranged in a regular and repeated pattern known as crystalline structure; this is particularly true for metals. It is very important to understand the crystal structure of materials in order to predict their properties such as the electric conductivity, heat transfer, and more. Particularly, students and scholars in the field of material science need a way to visualize the different crystal structures. Atomic structures of elements are not visible to the naked eye. In that context, a computer based tool can be used to simulate and to visualize the crystal structures of …

Toward An Optogenetic Autonomous Nerve Control (Oanc) System, Malika S. Datta, Matthew Ward, Steven Lee, Kevin Seburn, Pedro Irazoqui

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Optogenetics is a developing field in neuroscience, where nerves are stimulated through optical instead of electrical signals, allowing for a more selective action of nerve populations [Aravanis et al, 2007]. In the context of electrical stimulation, the autonomous nerve control (ANC) system has been used successfully, first to map the response of different nerve fibers to create a Nerve Activation Profile, and then to use this profile in recruiting specific nerve fibers in a controlled way [MP Ward et al, unpublished manuscript in preparation]. The objective of the present project is to apply the ANC system to optical stimulation thus …

Thread Based Battery For Low Power E-Textile Applications, Pranav Laxmanan, Girish Chitnis, Rahim Rahimi, Babak Ziaie

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Textile electronic systems, or e-textiles, are on the rise but their utility is limited by its power demand. Potential applications include point-of-care diagnostic systems that would enable medical monitoring at the site of care. A small, inexpensive, and easy to use battery would enhance the capabilities of e-textile. Here we propose a thread based battery that attempts to satisfy these requirements. The thread based battery uses chemistry similar to an alkaline battery. The fabrication process involves patterning of current collector (silver epoxy or carbon ink) followed by zinc electroplating and manganese dioxide deposition. Thread present in between these two electrodes …

Biomarkers For Vincristine-Induced Neuropathy, Danni Li, Jayachandran Devaraj, Doraiswami Ramkrishna Oct 2013

Biomarkers For Vincristine-Induced Neuropathy, Danni Li, Jayachandran Devaraj, Doraiswami Ramkrishna

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Vincristine is a vinca alkaloid, a commonly used chemotherapy drug for treating leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma and some pediatric cancers. Its major dose-limiting side effect is peripheral neuropathy. The current dosing of “standard-dose-for-all” ignores the genetic and phenotypic variations among different patients, and causes severe neuropathy in some patients while ineffectively treats the others. In the present study, we aim to discover novel biomarkers involved in vincristine-induced neuropathy and identify patients with varied metabolic characteristics. Thus treatment can be tailored accordingly to improve outcomes of vincristine treatment. Pre-dose and post-dose serum samples were collected from two groups of patients (low …

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Large-scale industries involved with a great amount of sensor measurements in their work are facing many challenges in data collection. Sensors are not on the same network; therefore each measurement has to be managed separately. Gathering all the measurement data to one terminal could be difficult. Once a measurement is obtained, it takes significant amount of time to process the data. The approaches our group takes here is to build a giant ANT wireless network that holds all the sensors’ measurements. To be more specific, every sensor has an ANT chip set up on its side. Each ANT chip is as …

Inkjet Printing Of Polarized Yeast Cells, Xiuyuan Yang, Kari Clase

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

The motivation is to applying engineering knowledge to develop 3D bio-printing in inkjet printer (first stage--monolayer). To achieve the goal, there are three problems to solve. First, we have to figure out regulation of growth of target cells; inability to regulate the location and pattern of growing cells make us even unable to build 3D printer in the direct way. Second problem is how to protect of yeast cells from high temperature and viscous force when printing. The third issue is how to modify the inkjet printer especially the feeding system in order to implement printing on other materials rather …

The goal of the project is to develop a RAPPTURE tool on nanoHUB.org. The AS tool will help us to create a series of case studies which will illustrate how to analyze admittance spectroscopy data, supply users with a more efficient way to do AS analysis, and provide an easy solution to perform AS analysis with their own experimental data. For one of the case studies, we simulated an N …

Real-Time-Hybrid-Simulation Of Multi-Degree-Of-Freedom Systems With Multiple Time Steps, Lanxi Liu, Arun Prakash Oct 2013

Real-Time-Hybrid-Simulation Of Multi-Degree-Of-Freedom Systems With Multiple Time Steps, Lanxi Liu, Arun Prakash

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Computational simulation and physical experiments are both widely used in testing the response of a structure under earthquake loadings, but physical experiments can be expensive for large problems and numerical may result in the loss of important structural behavior caused by a large amount of assumptions. Real-time hybrid simulation (RTHS) is a combination of these two approaches, which uses both a numerical and physical substructures that interact in real time to simulate structural behavior. The numerical and physical substructures are connected using a transfer system that enforces compatibility between them. The physical substructure needs to be run at a very …
