Intermetalic Growth Rate In Transient Liquid Phase Sintering Of Pb-Free Solder Interconnects, Shuqing Zhang, John Blendell

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Following the electron devices are widely used in daily life, Pb-free solder alloy, as the replacement of Pb solder joint material, needs extensive researches to observe the properties for using and simulation purpose. Solder are used as the joint to connect two work pieces in printed wiring board of electronics. Most lead-free solders comprise tin (Sn) as the majority component, and nominally pure b-Sn is the majority phase in the microstructure of these solders. The most important thing for solder joint that researchers care about is its life cycle. Due to the incomplete of the mechanical profile of Pb-free solder …

Design Of A Novel Actuation System For Variable Displacement Gear Machine, Mark W. Mahuren, Andrea Vacca Oct 2013

Design Of A Novel Actuation System For Variable Displacement Gear Machine, Mark W. Mahuren, Andrea Vacca

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

External spur gear pumps are exceedingly useful components in common hydraulic systems. The main issue with external gear pumps is that all current models are limited to only fixed-displacement. This means that for every revolution of the gears inside the pump, a set amount of fluid will always be displaced. Consequently, external gear pumps are limited in their use because they can only operate at full throttle causing inefficiencies when reduced displacement is needed. The successful procurement of a variable displacement gear pump will allow a more efficient use of hydraulic systems, such as in the displacement controlled systems used …

Effect Of Compression On The Transmission Loss Of Porous Material, Yingchao Yang, J Stuart Bolton Oct 2013

Effect Of Compression On The Transmission Loss Of Porous Material, Yingchao Yang, J Stuart Bolton

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Porous materials are commonly applied in sound absorption in different places. Transmission loss, one of the vital parameters determining the performance of the material, will change when the material is compressed. Usually the compression that might affect the properties to the greatest extent are normal compression and the deformation can be simplified as 1D compression model. In order to verify the prediction, some formulas taking several parameters (porosity, tortuosity, flow resistivity and characteristic lengths) into account are applied and also the Johnson et al’s model of limp structure. Dynamic density of limp model and bulk modulus are thus obtained and …

Bicistronic Design For Precise And Reliable Gene Expression, Nidhi N. Menon, Jenna Rickus Oct 2013

Bicistronic Design For Precise And Reliable Gene Expression, Nidhi N. Menon, Jenna Rickus

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Despite having progressed extensively in the field of synthetic biology in terms of DNA synthesis, analysis and transplanting, we still cannot reliably, quantitatively measure expression of new genetic constructs. We engineered a biobrick compatible expression cassette to control transcription and translation initiation which can be reused in new genetic contexts. Previous research has shown that the Bicistronic design have much lesser variations in expression with varying genes of interest as compared to the regular monocistronic design.(Mutalik, Endy, Guimaraes, Cambray, Lam, Juul, Tran & Paull, 2013) The Bicistronic design(BCD) consists of two Shine-Dalgarno sequences in its translation element which when combined …

Synthesizing Bismuth Telluride Nanowires In A Large Scale And Investigating The Energy Filtering Effect By Blending Bismuth Telluride Nanowires And Silver Nanoparticle In Thermoelectrics, Henka Darsono, Haiyu Fang, Yue Wu

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

More than 50% of the energy sources becomes “waste” energy generally dissipated to the atmosphere in the form of heat. Thermoelectric effect is a conversion of temperature difference to electric voltage and can be used to convert the wasted heat to useful work. Nanomaterials have great potentials in the field of thermoelectric effect since they have properties that can allow higher efficiency in converting this wasted heat to electricity as compared to bulk materials. The purpose of this project is to develop a method to synthesize bismuth telluride (Bi2Te3) nanowires on a large scale and incorporate …

Tokamaks for fusion research are extremely complex and are still limited by inherent instabilities such as material erosion from plasma instabilities. Due to the lack of data and high demand of resources, simulations to portray Tokamaks are essential. A Particle-In-Cell (PIC) simulation for plasma erosion on materials within the Tokamak is to be benchmarked using the experimental data obtained in these experiments. The effects of an axial magnetic field (magnetic field lines are along the plasma propagation direction) on an expanding laser produced plasma plume are investigated. A Continuum Surelite Nd:YAG laser system at 1064 nm wavelength and 6 ns …

Characterization Of Lead-Free Piezo-Ceramics, Hanhan Zhou, John Blendell

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Lead zirconate titanate (PZT) has been the most commonly used piezoelectric material due to its high piezoelectric performance under varied operating conditions. However, it has been noticed that the lead component is toxic, causing some environmental issues and a lead free substitute material was introduced. The substituted environmental friendly piezoelectric material, Ba(Zr0.2Ti0.8)O3–x(Ba0.7Ca0.3)TiO3 (BZT-xBCT) system that can fulfill the need of high piezoelectricity has been developed. The research was conducted to characterize the BZT-xBCT system with five different compositions (x=0.06, 0.08, 0.1, 0.12 and 0.14).. XRD was applied to examine the crystal structure of the samples before and after poling and …

High-Order Shock Capturing For Computational Aeroacoustics, Samuel Otto, Gregory Blaisdell Oct 2013

High-Order Shock Capturing For Computational Aeroacoustics, Samuel Otto, Gregory Blaisdell

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Jet noise is not only an annoyance to passengers and communities near airports, it is a major contributor to hearing loss in veterans who served on aircraft carriers, as well as a significant limiting factor for the growth of commercial airlines. High-fidelity large eddy simulation (LES) is an important tool for analyzing and predicting jet noise; however the utilized non-dissipative high order finite difference schemes produce instabilities at shock waves. Schemes for capturing shock waves, however, are more dissipative and do a poor job preserving turbulent structures and acoustic waves. To maximize the strengths of both approaches, hybrid methods utilize …

Characterization Of Hardness And Elastic Modulus Of A Pharmaceutical Material For Multiple Crystal Orientations, Alexis L. Mertz, David F. Bahr

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Nanoindentation has made it possible to test material properties of extremely brittle molecular crystals, which include many pharmaceuticals. An antifungal, griseofulvin, is tested to determine differences in hardness and elastic modulus for different crystal orientations. Hardness and elastic modulus are determined by nanoindentation on single crystals that are rotated in 15° intervals. There are differences in hardness at rotation degrees of 45°, 60°, and 75° from the 0° orientation and differences in elastic modulus at rotation degrees of 15°, 60°, and 75° from the 0° orientation. It is also found that the elastic modulus and hardness values of the 75° …

Interfacial Rheological Mechanics Of A Non-Ionic, Tri-Block Copolymer At Water/Hexadecane Interface, Jerome J. Nash, Kendra Erk

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Growing interest on the stability of foams and emulsions has lead to concentrated research of interfacial rheology. The response of an interfacial layer to mechanical deformation in size and shape is dependent on its composition. [Miller 2010] This research analysis focused on the adsorption and rheological mechanics of the non-ionic, tri-block copolymer, Pluronic 17R4 at the water/hexadecane interface. The adsorption and viscoelastic properties of the interface were measured via methods of pendant drop tensiometry and dynamic oscillation with drop shape analysis software. Interfacial tension measurements were taken to study the surface pressures of Pluronic 17R4 solutions with concentrations ranging from …

In Vivo Flow Measurements Of Murine Renal Arteries And Veins With High Frequency Ultrasound, Amy E. Bogucki, Hilary D. Schroeder, Alexa A. Yrineo, Craig J. Goergen

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

The number of glomeruli in the kidneys has been shown to have an effect on the decline in renal function over time (Brenner, Garcia, Anderson 1988). Furthermore, flow in the renal arteries and veins may depend on the number of glomeruli in the kidney. Consistent in vivo measurements of volumetric flow in the renal arteries and veins are difficult to obtain. Thus, the purpose of this study was to develop non-invasive imaging techniques capable of estimating arterial and venous flow to kidneys. A high-frequency small animal ultrasound system was chosen based upon its excellent spatial and temporal resolution when imaging …

Semi-Active Structural Control Of A 2-Story Shear Building, Alana K. Wilbee, Shirley Dyke

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

With continuing urban development across the world, it is becoming ever more important to provide increased structural safety against events such as earthquakes and strong winds. The field of structural control has recently been growing to meet these challenges through the use of semi-active control methods, such as the Magnetorheological (MR) Damper. However, due to the non-linearity of the device, the knowledge base surrounding the MR Damper and its various control algorithms still needs to be strengthened before large-scale implementation of this control method can occur. To address these issues, this study will examine a two story benchmark structure using …

Stanford Stratified Structure Solver (S4) Simulation Tool, Chang Liu, Xufeng Wang, Peter Bermel

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

The Stanford Stratified Structure Solver (S4) developed in 2012 allows for fast, accurate prediction of optical propagation through complex 3D structures. However, there have been two key challenges preventing wider use to date: the use of a specialized control language, and the difficulty of incorporating realistic materials parameters. In this project, both concerns have been addressed. We have constructed a graphical user interface as an alternative, using the open-source Rappture platform on nanoHUB. This has been combined with a comprehensive materials database known as PhotonicsDB, which incorporates materials optical data drawn from carefully vetted sources. An Octave script file was …

Selection of the debug unit’s correct feature set and architecture are critical to the success of the design. Debugging systems that exist have different architectures and are closely coupled to their host SoCs. As a consequence they are resource intensive to improve on due to the different nature of each SoC designs. Moreover, the bus protocols that allow the debug unit to interact with the SoC design are often …

Artificial Yeast Polarization Controlled By Chemical Gradient, James K. Nolan, Bernard Tao Oct 2013

Artificial Yeast Polarization Controlled By Chemical Gradient, James K. Nolan, Bernard Tao

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Engineering synthetic multicellular systems will lead to new synthetic biology technological platforms, inform developmental biology through recapitulation of natural systems and possibly unveil novel morphologies with practical applications not before reached throughout natural history (Maharbiz, 2012). Creating an exogenous molecular circuit that will polarize unicellular cells into “apical” and “basal” domains relative to a substrate plane would fulfill a missing component towards fully multicellular synthetic cellular communities (Maharbiz, 2012). To this end, a PIP3 polarization network previously designed by Chau and associates (Chau, Walter, Gerardin, Tang, Lim 2012) was coupled to the specific activation by niacin of a recombinant …

Designing Meaningful Molecular Dynamics (Md) Simulations: The Lithiation Of Silicon, María Camila Rincon, Alejandro Strachan, Hojin Kim, David Guzman, Mathew Cherukara

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Molecular dynamics (MD) is used to understand the properties of materials by following the time evolution of the system and exploring the interactions between its constituent atoms. MD simulation allows making reliable predictions of various properties of materials; however, designing useful computer experiments is a complex task that requires the appropriate selection of interatomic interactions (force fields) and other conditions. In this work we discuss some aspects of molecular dynamics that would help the inexperienced users design reliable simulations. The simulation of the lithiation process of silicon is taken as an example for better understanding.

The Efficacy And Optimization Of Somatosensory Intracortical Microstimulation In Rats, Sean P. Mcdowell, Ryan S. Verner, Kevin J. Otto Dr.

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Demand exists for brain-machine interfaces that offer a wide range of sensory feedback along with volitional motor control to individuals with limited control of natural sensory or motor function. As these sensorimotor devices are developed, it is necessary to improve the interaction between the prostheses and higher-level cortical structures. Optimizing these somatosensory stimulation parameters will require the use of a high-throughput experimental design. To address this, one Sprague-Dawley rat was trained to respond to auditory stimuli during a conditioned-avoidance behavior task and then implanted with a penetrating microelectrode array in the part of the somatosensory cortex corresponding to the left …

Assessing The Mvs Model For Nanotransistors, Siyang Liu, Xingshu Sun, Mark S. Lundstrom

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

A simple semi-empirical compact MOSFET model has been developed, which is called MIT virtual source (MVS) model. Compare to other model used in industry, MVS model requires only a few parameters, most of which can be directly obtained from experiment, and produce accurate results. One aim of this paper is to test the applicability of the MVS model to transistor made from MoS2 rather than silicon. Another target is to determine the sustainability of the MVS model under different transistor tests. To achieve these goals, the MVS model will be used to fit the experimental data on MoS2 …

Non-Mass Transfer Limited Crystal Growth, Ryan J. Smyth, Caitlin Schram, Stephen P. Beaudoin

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

There are many different active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) that have been discovered in research labs all around the world that can be used to treat and cure patients with a variety of different ailments. The challenge with these APIs in treatments is that they are not soluble in water, thus they low absorption into the blood stream (bio-availability). The key to making these APIs more bio-available is to understand how they grow as crystals and drop out of the aqueous solutions. One of the ways these APIs were made more bio-available is to render them amorphous and suspend them in …

Ion sputtering is the removal of surface atoms or molecules in a solid under energetic ion irradiation. This technique is promising for its applications in material modification and characterization. Sputtering yield, the average number of atoms removed from a sample per incident ion, is a crucial parameter in material modification. In the present study, a quartz crystal microbalance was used within an ultra-high vacuum chamber (10E-8 torr) to measure the sputtering yield of gold. An NTI-1401 ion gun was used to bombard argon and helium ions onto a gold sample. The argon and helium ions used ranged in energy from …

Interaction Model Of Functions In The National Airspace System, Nathan F. Koerschner, Steven J. Landry Oct 2013

Interaction Model Of Functions In The National Airspace System, Nathan F. Koerschner, Steven J. Landry

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

The National Airspace System (NAS) is comprehensively described by five functions derived from big-picture goals: (1) conflict detection and resolution, (2) controlling aircraft states, (3) traffic flow management, (4) controlling passenger states, and (5) controlling company resources. It can be reasonably assumed that these functions interact in some way; this interaction is currently unknown. A model of the entire NAS would be helpful in discovering these interactions, yet no such comprehensive model exists. To address this problem an agent-based state-based model was created in MATLAB. To date, only functions (1) and (2) were implemented. Running the model shows that there …

Image Skeletal Muscle Progenitors In Situ To Investigate How The Ecm Composition Regulates Musculoskeletal Assembly, Andrew L. Schilb, Sarah Calve

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Regenerative medicine has difficulty with the human body’s inability to functionally repair tissues lost as a result of disease or serious accident. Through tissue engineering, there has been development of various scaffolding with the purpose of enhancing skeletal muscle regrowth and functionality. The scaffolds are typically constructed from artificial polymers or decellularized extracellular matrix (ECM) that mimics adult tissue. These standardized scaffolds are hindered though by the host since tissue engineers have not taken into account of how the composition musculoskeletal ECM during tissue repair is dramatically different than that of a homeostatic adult. Now green fluorescent protein positive (GFP+) …

Polymer-based thermoelectric materials, which can have readily-tuned properties through simple control of their chemistry, offer the promise of providing flexible, lightweight, and low-cost modules for the environmentally-friendly conversion of waste heat to electricity without the need for moving parts. As such, they have started to be explored in applications ranging from improved building efficiency to increased mileage in automobiles. However, widespread implementation of these materials is limited due to their low performance relative to their mechanically-rigid, heavy inorganic material-based counterparts. Therefore, a critical need exists to design polymer-nanoparticle composite materials to increase the energy conversion of thin film thermoelectric devices. …

Multi-Factorial Stability Study Of Metabolites, Ruijun Zheng, John A. Morgan

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Previous research done on metabolites has found that high energy compounds like adenosine triphosphate(ATP), nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate reduced (NADPH) or nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide reduced (NADH) are unstable in cell extracts at relatively high temperature and acidic condition. The multifactorial stability study of metabolites enables us to verify the best condition of storage for these energy compounds and sugar phosphates, as well as to strengthen the understanding of metabolism in biological study. As the most solvents for high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) are acidic and unfavorable for these energy compounds, it is necessary to perform a detailed study about …

Tobacco Mosaic Virus Implemented As An Interfacial Layer In Organic Photovoltaic Cells, Monica D. Del Real, Bryan Boudouris Oct 2013

Tobacco Mosaic Virus Implemented As An Interfacial Layer In Organic Photovoltaic Cells, Monica D. Del Real, Bryan Boudouris

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Organic photovoltaics (OPVs) are flexible, light weight, and economical to produce due to low processing temperatures, solution processing, and print fabrication. This makes them optimal for a wide range of applications. However, the efficiencies of OPVs are currently not high enough for them to be viable in the market or to be able to compete with inorganic photovoltaics. Therefore the integration of new materials and methods into OPVs in order to increase their efficiency is a vital field. One way to increase the efficiency of OPVs is to increase the surface area in-between layers to allow for enhanced electron transport. …
