International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Geotechnical engineers frequently use information about subsurface conditions from other projects in the area to design new projects in the vicinity. However, this information is used more in a surfacial manner rather than an integral part of project design. This session on application of case histories in education and practice has been introduced for the first time in this conference to initiate formalization of the use case histories in engineering design and training of civil engineering students. This report summarizes the papers submitted by various civil engineering educators and professional practitioners. The readers are encouraged to review the complete papers …

A Field Test Study On Instrumented Soil Nail Installed In Cut Slope, A. K. L. Kwong, C. F. Lee
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Soil nailing is a technique routinely used in Hong Kong whereby closely spaced steel bars are installed into a slope so that its stability conditions can be improved. A full-scale field test has been carried out by The Department of Civil Engineering of The University of Hong Kong to study the development of passive load along the full length of soil nails when subjected to induced rise in groundwater table. The cut slope was formed to a very steep angle of 55° and 10 m high in completely decomposed volcanic material. Grouted curtain was also formed behind, at the bottom …

The study presents the results of case histories on failure of embankments in Bangladesh based on the field visits to the embankments sites, collected data and information on failure of embankments necessary data related to embankments construction practice obtained from available publications and soil conditions of the breached embankments in Bangladesh. Efforts have been made to discuss briefly the causes of embankment failure and its possible remedial measures. Two recent failures of embankments that occurred in the year 2007 are taken into consideration for a detailed study. For each case, embankment failure mechanism, construction method used for the embankments, soil …
Evaluation Of The Taum Sauk Upper Reservoir Failure, Quentin Gehring, Ronaldo Luna
Evaluation Of The Taum Sauk Upper Reservoir Failure, Quentin Gehring, Ronaldo Luna
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The Taum Sauk Upper Reservoir was built in the early 1960’s as a water storage reservoir for hydro-electric energy production. The reservoir was created by blasting rock from the top of Proffit Mountain. The rock debris generated was then used to construct a kidney shaped earthen embankment atop the mountain. The reservoir is located in Reynolds County near the town of Lesterville, Missouri. The Upper Reservoir was approximately 95 feet in depth and covered a surface area of roughly 55 acres. The reservoir had the capacity to hold nearly 1.5 billion gallons of water. The Upper reservoir underwent a catastrophic …

Evaluation Of Dispersive Properties Of Clays To Be Used In Embankment Of Arsuz - Gönençay Dam, Ayşe Aydin, Eray Özgüler
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Dispersive clays can easily be eroded when they contact with water having high percent dissolved sodium ion in pores. Colloidal clay minerals in these types of soil produce suspension even in stagnant water by dispersion and decomposition. Use of dispersive clays as an impervious material in embankments and dams can cause serious problems of internal erosion (piping) and failure induced by these problems. In this paper, impervious material areas of Arsuz Gönençay dam are discussed as an example of evaluation of usability of dispersive clays in dam fills. The dam type was selected as zoned earth fill at the stage …

Controlled Wetting Test Of A Soil Nailed Loose Fill Slope: Case Study, Y. D. Zhou, L. G. Tham, J. Li, E. C. Y. To, C. F. Lee
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
For an in-depth understanding of the failure mechanism of loose fill slopes and the strengthening effect by soil nails, a comprehensive field study program has been carried out at a specially built slope. The test slope was constructed by end-tipping of completely decomposed granitic soils almost without any compaction. The controlled failure test program was mainly composed of surcharge at the crest, wetting with surcharge, and wetting without surcharge. This paper is aimed at a case study of the coupled hydro-mechanical response of the test slope during the recharge process with surcharge. Through a comprehensive instrumentation system, abundant monitoring data …

Initial Filling Of Tehri Reservoir — Analysis Of Seepage Data, R. S. T. Sai, S. K. Shukla, G. M. Prasad, R. K. Vishnoi, Sandeep Singhal
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Initial Filling of reservoirs in dams, particularly the embankment type, is a very important phase as unusual behaviour / accidents of many dams have been reported during this period. A regular observation / analysis of quantum of seepage vis-à-vis the reservoir level is a significant activity so that any serious development inside the body of dam and foundation / abutments rocks are revealed in advance and remedial measures are taken up timely to prevent catastrophic failures. At Tehri, a 260.5m high earth & rockfill dam has been constructed across river Bhagirathi, a tributary of mighty river Ganga in India. Seepage …

Overview Of The Taum Sauk Pumped Storage Power Plant Upper Reservoir Failure, Reynolds County, Mo, J. David Rogers, Conor M. Watkins
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The Taum Sauk Pumped Storage Powerplant was constructed between 1960-63 to store water for generation during peak daytime power demands. The plant consists of a lower reservoir, which is sited along the East Fork of the Black River, and an upper reservoir, formed by a kidney-shaped rockfill dike approximately 70 to 90 ft high, capped by a 10 ft concrete parapet wall. The upper reservoir held 1.5 billion gallons (~4,600 acre-feet) when filled. A variety of design/construction flaws, instrumentation error, and human errors contributed to a catastrophic failure of the upper reservoir on Dec 14, 2005. Malfunctioning and improperly programmed/placed …
Locating Slide Surface And Pre-Slide Topography Using Site Investigation Data, Case Study: Maskun Landslide, Vahid Maazallahi, Ali Saiedi
Locating Slide Surface And Pre-Slide Topography Using Site Investigation Data, Case Study: Maskun Landslide, Vahid Maazallahi, Ali Saiedi
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The geometric shape of the slide surface and the topography of before and after the failure are the essential factors for analysis of a landslide and for design of remedial works. Since determination of the slide surface profile is difficult and costly using traditional methods and often the pre-slide topography is not accessible, this paper is going to present two techniques to determine these factors. The presented technique to locate 3dimensional geometric shape of the slide surface is based upon determining slide surface in 2dimensional vertical sections. The outcrop and other signs of slide surface are implemented factors for this …
Pit Slope Failure Problems In Goan Iron Ore Mines, Goa, India, A. Santha Ram, S. P. Goyal
Pit Slope Failure Problems In Goan Iron Ore Mines, Goa, India, A. Santha Ram, S. P. Goyal
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The problem of open pit slope stability is a matter of concern when the mining operations go deeper followed by weak strata conditions. In Goa iron ore mines the problem of slope instability has been faced by several mines, after the on-set of monsoon. A review of case studies available on the subject demonstrates that the ground displacement, stress redistribution, effect of ground water, low strength characteristics of the slope forming materials played significant role for the cause of slope failures. Slope monitoring studies indicated that the mechanism of slope failures could be complex and dependent on failure pathways, where …

Prevention, Mitigation And Engineering Response For Geohazard In Thailand, Adichat Surinkum, Worawoot Tantiwanit, Jarin Tulyatid
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Thailand is situated in SE Asia where most of the area has been under the influence of monsoonal type of weather. Geological settings of the country is believed to be the result of the collision between Indian and Eurasian plates. The collision has great influences on the topographic, weather and tectonic activities of the area for a long time. These factors are closely related to a number of serious geohazards of the area. Such geohazards include landslide and tsunami caused by a large distant earthquake along the Indian – Eurasian subduction zone. Important geohazard cases in Thailand have been discussed …

Probabilistic Finite Elements With Dynamic Limit Bounds; A Case Study: 17th Street Flood Wall, New Orleans, Mohammadreza Rajabalinejad, P. H. A. J. M. Van Gelder, J. K. Vrijling
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The probabilistic approach provides a better understanding of failure mechanisms and occurrence probabilities as well as consequences of failure. Besides, main advantages of the probabilistic design in comparison with the deterministic design are: a more careful, more cost effective, and more reliable design of infrastructures. In the present study a new probabilistic approach is applied to the 17th Street Flood Wall, and its probability of failure under hurricane hazard, considering multiple failure mechanisms is assessed. The Monte Carlo (MC) simulation technique coupled with dynamic limit bounds (DLB) integrated with finite element approach is used. The performance of DLB and MC …

Seepage Through Different Concrete Cut Off Wall Connection Systems Case Study: Karkheh Storage Dam, Zakaria Zoorasna, Amir Hamidi, Ali Ghanbari
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Seepage and water flow is one of the most important factors in design of embankment dams. The seepage through the foundation of earth dams can be controlled using the concrete cut off walls. The hydraulic head reduces in connection zone of the cut off wall and core of the dam that results to high hydraulic gradients. As a result, erosion and water leakage may occur. In this regard, the design of concrete cut off wall connection to the clayey core of earth dam is important. In this research, the total flow and the hydraulic gradient are considered to study the …

Stability Analysis Of A Tailings Dam: Existing State And Planned Heightening, Anton D. Tzenkov
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
This paper presents the studies carried out to determine the stability of a tailings dam for its existing state and for a planned heightening. The dam is made of rockfill; it is about 3 500 m long and its maximum height is presently 38 m. The tailings are heterogeneous; they originate from three industrial enterprises in the region and are transported mixed with water, through supply pipelines. The facility is built on foundation made up of clays, underlain by marl. The present study consists of seepage analysis; consolidation analysis to assess the stress states at different stages during the building …

Stress-Strain Analysis Of Different Concrete Cut Off Wall Connection Systems Case Study: Karkheh Storage Dam, Zakaria Zoorasna, Amir Hamidi, Ali Ghanbari
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The concrete cut off wall is usually used to control the seepage through the foundation of earth dams. It is usually made of plastic concrete. It can be connected to the core of the earth dam using different connection systems. The difference between cut off wall and core material results stress concentration in the connection zone. In fact the main cause is the large difference between stiffness of the cut off wall concrete and clayey core of the dam. This makes the stress-strain behavior complex in the connection zone. In the present study, six different details for the connection system …

Vanyar dam is located near Tabriz city, North West of Iran. The side channel overflow spillway of this dam is located on the left side of dam body with discharge capacity of 1330 m3/sec. To construct this spillway a soil-rock slope with height of maximum 140m is excavated. After about three years, some surface cracks and slides started to develop. This research tries to study the reasons of these instabilities and some approaches are presented to stabilize the slope. This slope is located on too weathered and crushed igneous rocks and weak sandstones. The field studies indicated that …
Back Analysis Of The Malakassa Landslide Using The Multi-Block Model, Constantine A. Stamatopoulos, Stavros G. Aneroussis
Back Analysis Of The Malakassa Landslide Using The Multi-Block Model, Constantine A. Stamatopoulos, Stavros G. Aneroussis
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
During the early hours of 18-02-1995 a landslide occurred at Malakasa, on the 36th kilometer of the highway joining Greece's main cities, Athens and Thessaloniki. The computed deformed geometry using this model agrees reasonably well with that measured. The back-estimated soil strength of 16o is in the range of the measured values (8-19o). Finally, state-of-the-art stability analyses, using the back-estimated residual soil strength, illustrated that the location of the slip surface can be predicted if it is assumed that only the saturated soil below the water table loses its strength.
Analysis Of Dam Behaviour After Eighty Years Of Service, Paolo Croce, Giuseppe Modoni
Analysis Of Dam Behaviour After Eighty Years Of Service, Paolo Croce, Giuseppe Modoni
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The paper reports on the behaviour of a masonry dam built in the Italian Alps in the early twenties of the last century and still in operation for electric power supply. The dam is 31 m high and its waterproofing is ensured by a multi-layered impervious facing, a concrete cut-off and a grout curtain protruding into the foundation soils. The geological location of the dam is rather complex, because its left abutment is located on a rock formation while the right one rests on a thick moraine deposit. Since its first impounding, large downstream water flows and significant movements of …
Averted Piping Failure—Earth Dam On Permeable Foundation, Scott Newhouse
Averted Piping Failure—Earth Dam On Permeable Foundation, Scott Newhouse
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
“The dam builder has substantial control over the properties of the structure he builds, but he must take the foundation as it is furnished by nature.” (Cedergren, 1989) This paper presents the case of an earth dam built on a permeable foundation where seepage problems nearly caused failure of the dam. Early during first filling, before the lake was even half full, the dam showed significant seepage. Seepage boils appeared at the dam’s toe, indicating the onset of piping failure through the foundation. Although seepage boils indicating a failure mechanism appeared, dam failure was averted. The paper describes the events …
Analysis And Stabilization Of A Failed Cut Slope In Schist, S. B. Manolopoulou, T. T. Papaliangas, T. C. Dimopoulos
Analysis And Stabilization Of A Failed Cut Slope In Schist, S. B. Manolopoulou, T. T. Papaliangas, T. C. Dimopoulos
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
This paper focuses on the description, analysis and stabilization of a failed cut slope in schist. The slope is located near the top of a hill and was cut for the needs of a new industrial building. A few weeks after the excavation, a slide occurred along the schistosity plane of the slope. The slide was attributed to the effect of water which flooded the slope following an overflow of a water tank located a few meters above the slope crest. For the analysis both the deterministic and probabilistic approaches were carried out, with the input parameters determined from simple …

Results of investigation of pile many row landslide protection structures are shown. Experimental investigations of the behaviour of many row landslide protection structures are carried out on models in trays with the sandy soil under the action of the lateral landslide soil pressure. Based on results of the experimental investigations, the design scheme is improved and the method of calculation of many row pile landslide protection structures is worked out.
A Review Of Foundation Failures On Plastic Clays, Following The Yield Shear Strength Concept Of A Plastic Solid In This Kind Of Soil, Jaime Graterol M.
A Review Of Foundation Failures On Plastic Clays, Following The Yield Shear Strength Concept Of A Plastic Solid In This Kind Of Soil, Jaime Graterol M.
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Several Foundations Failures are analyze and a comparative study is made, of the bearing capacity of foundations using the undrained shear strength cu, φu = 0 vs. using the yield shear strength, Sc for saturated normally and over consolidated plastic clays. I bring up the yield shear strength concept in this kind of soil, following the criteria that cohesive clay is a plastic solid and could be expected to exhibit the basic properties of such a material. Finally a criteria is formulated for determination of the bearing capacity of foundations based on the yield shear strength in this kind …
Case Histories Of Settlement Performance Comparisons On Ground Improvement Using Soil Stiffness, J. D. Redgers, A. L. Moxhay, G. S. Ghataora, I. Jefferson
Case Histories Of Settlement Performance Comparisons On Ground Improvement Using Soil Stiffness, J. D. Redgers, A. L. Moxhay, G. S. Ghataora, I. Jefferson
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Ground improvements often aim to reduce settlement risks for foundations and this requires reliable methods of prediction. Current approaches are based on empirical procedures and methods developed over 30 years ago. This has resulted historically in designs and installations of unnecessarily sophisticated foundations. In addition many developments now encountered by ground improvement contractors involve previously developed or ‘brownfield’ sites made up of heterogeneous and variable made ground. Methods to predict settlements traditionally use destructive and invasive approaches such as SPT or CPT that can be insensitive to time dependent changes, which often occur when brownfield sites are improved. By comparison …
The Importance Of Mineralogy And Grain Compressibility In Understanding Field Behavior Of Failures, Abouzar Sadrekarimi, Scott M. Olson
The Importance Of Mineralogy And Grain Compressibility In Understanding Field Behavior Of Failures, Abouzar Sadrekarimi, Scott M. Olson
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
In this paper, we examine the role of grain mineralogy and compressibility, sample preparation, and shear strain/displacement levels on the shearing behavior of sands using undrained triaxial and constant volume ring shear tests in an attempt to explain some discrepancies observed between field and laboratory behavior. As expected, preparation by moist tamping can produce specimens that are contractive throughout shear, while counterparts prepared using pluviation exhibit dilative behavior at intermediate shear strain/displacement levels (i.e., after initial yield). However, both triaxial and ring shear tests illustrate that some sands consisting of more compressible minerals can exhibit entirely contractive behavior regardless of …

Case Study Of Failure Of A R.C.C. Counterfort Retaining Wall, R. D. Padhye, P. B. Ullagaddi
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
It is a fact that the retaining wall failures have occurred in the distant past as also in recent times and will recur inevitably in future. The reasons of failure are ultimately the errors of judgment to which no humans including the greatest of engineers are immune. Free flow of information on failure incidents is greatly inhibited in most of the cases by the natural tendency to avoid publicizing our mistakes although all human are prone to them. The present study through light on a failure of a recently constructed R.C.C. counter fort Retaining wall. The wall is located near …

Case Study Of Landslide In Nh –13 At Kethikal Near Mangalore – India, K. Arunkumar Bhat, R. Shivashankar, Ramakrishna Yaji
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The disastrous slope failure occurred at the Kethikal hill, in the outskirts of Mangalore city in NH 13, India, during the month of June 1998 soon after the heavy and continuous monsoon rains. Many closely built dwelling houses at the top of hill are damaged and the traffic along the road is also diverted for some duration. Typical stratified slope with three layers is considered for the stability analysis and the general computer program is developed in C language for optimization of factor of safety. The factor of safety is calculated using Janbu’s generalized procedure of slices and Davidon-Fletcher-Powel (DFP) …
Elasto-Plastic Soil-Structure Interaction Analysis Of Building Frame-Soil System, Manjeet Hora
Elasto-Plastic Soil-Structure Interaction Analysis Of Building Frame-Soil System, Manjeet Hora
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The conventional building frame analysis is carried out assuming unyielding supports and ignoring the interactive response of supporting soil media. In fact, the building frame and its foundation along with the soil mass on which it rests together constitute a single integral compatible structural unit to resist the loads. A proper idealization of the building frame-foundation-soil system is thus needed for accessing the realistic and more accurate analysis. The interaction system analyzed in this way yields a rational structural behavior as the shear forces and bending moments get significantly altered due to the resulting differential settlements of soil mass. In …
