Streamlining Case Studies For Education, Peter Scharle Aug 2008

Streamlining Case Studies For Education, Peter Scharle

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Recent results of cognitive psychology seem to confirm that post secondary education in civil engineering can be conceived as introduction to the world of models, and to the model selection and application skills. From this perspective, case study analysis turns to be one of the most efficient approaches used worldwide by educators teaching geotechnics. BSc and MSc levels of knowledge and competency are easy to distinguish and characterize plausibly in this conceptual framework. Significance of the MSc level thinking in geotechnics proves to be a consequence. Plenty of case studies, in principle, can be selected to meet the educational purposes, …

Qinghai-Tibet Railway, China And The Solutions To Its Major Geotechnical Problems For Construction, Lanmin Wang, Zhijian Wu, Junjie Sun, Luxin Zhang

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The Qinghai-Tibet Railway (QTR) is the highest-elevation one for passenger trains in the world and the first railway to connect central China to Tibet. Construction of this railway starting in 2001 had to contend with major geotechnical challenges, such as permafrost, environmental protection and seismic hazards. Its completion in 2006 is a remarkable feat in the world’s railway construction history and crystallization of wisdom of human beings. In this paper, the planning and preparing history and the construction project of QTR are introduced. The major three thorny problems, permafrost, lack of oxygen and environmental frangibility for the construction and their …

Distributed Fiber Optics Strain Measurements For Monitoring Geotechnical Structures, Kenichi Soga, Hisham Mohamad, Peter J. Bennett

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Recent advances in strain measurement using optical fibers provide new opportunities for monitoring the performance of geotechnical structures during and after construction. Brillouin optical time-domain reflectometry (BOTDR) is an innovative technique that allows measurement of full strain profiles using standard optical fibers. In this paper, two case studies illustrating the application of the distributed optical fiber strain sensors are presented. One is monitoring of an old masonry tunnel when a new tunnel was constructed nearby and the other is monitoring the behavior of secant piled walls for basement construction. Both sites are located in London. The advantages and limitations of …

A New International Database On Case Histories Of Monitored Construction Of Tunnels And Deep Excavations, Fabrice Emeriault, Richard Kastner, Rodolphe Louis-Sidney, Elöd Egyed-Zsigmond

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The prototype of a new database for case histories of monitored construction of tunnels and deep excavations is presented in this paper. The basic requirements for this database have been established by the members of the Technical Committee TC28 of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering. It is based on the Content Management System (CMS) Typo3. The resulting structure is flexible, the data being mirrored on sites managed by each participant providing data. It uses a web interface where the user can navigate and access to the data via an indexed search engine. Some very basic and …

Geobrain: Dutch Feasibility Database For Installing Sheet Pile Walls, A. R. (André) Koelewijn, A. M. J. (Annemieke) Mens

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

In this paper it is shown how the knowledge embedded in case histories can be used to explicate some of the uncertainties contributing to the gap between theory and practice. With the help of computational intelligence techniques, collections of case histories in data-bases, as a type of collective memory of the geotechnical profession may be explored to turn this memory into collective brains in geo-technics: a GeoBrain. Regarding the scarcity of soil investigation data and the translation of the available data into a model, the ‘schematization factor’ has been introduced as a partial safety factor to account for the influence …

Use Of Case Histories To Enhance Practical Geotechnical Engineering, K. S. Babu Narayan, B. M. Sunil Aug 2008

Use Of Case Histories To Enhance Practical Geotechnical Engineering, K. S. Babu Narayan, B. M. Sunil

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Mathematical models are constructed to describe the behavior of engineering systems in quantitative terms. During conceptualization stage of modelling several valid assumptions have to be made so as to make the model predict the behavior of the system as accurately as possible. Refinement of mathematical models need feed back from practice. Many practical cases are of interest in updating and enhancing quantitative judgment of geo-technical systems behavior. This paper envisages to present a few interesting cases where the situation forced true synthesis of theory and practice for innovation and advancement of practical geo-technical engineering.

Recent Experience On Design, Construction And Performance Of Cfrd Dams, Camilo Marulanda Escobar, Alberto Marulanda Posada Aug 2008

Recent Experience On Design, Construction And Performance Of Cfrd Dams, Camilo Marulanda Escobar, Alberto Marulanda Posada

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The inherent features of concrete face rockfill dams and the trend of building higher dams have been recently questioned by three recent incidents where major dams have experienced significant cracking in the central portion of the dam after the first filling. The incidents include the dams of Mohale in South Africa, and Barra Grande and Campos Novos in Brazil, the last one being the highest dam of its type built in the world. The design and development of CFRD dams, have been based primarily on precedent and empiricism, however, these recent incidents have shown that the extrapolation of precedent with …

Using Experience And Case History Data To Enhance The Design Of Piled Foundations And Predict Behaviour Characteristics, David J. Baxter, Neil Dixon, Paul R. Fleming, Ken A. Cromwell Aug 2008

Using Experience And Case History Data To Enhance The Design Of Piled Foundations And Predict Behaviour Characteristics, David J. Baxter, Neil Dixon, Paul R. Fleming, Ken A. Cromwell

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

This paper explores the process of piled foundation design and how it can benefit from the inclusion of previous test data and case histories from nearby or geologically similar sites. The interaction between the soil and the structure is critical to the behaviour of a pile and is a function of both the ground conditions and the method of pile construction. An accurate model of the ground conditions is required for the design, as is a detailed knowledge of the method of pile installation and its subsequent interaction with the soil. Where case histories are available they can be utilised …

Ground Vibrations Induced By Impact Pile Driving, K. Rainer Massarsch, Bengt H. Fellenius Aug 2008

Ground Vibrations Induced By Impact Pile Driving, K. Rainer Massarsch, Bengt H. Fellenius

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The importance of vibration problems induced by pile driving is addressed and guidelines for establishing limiting vibration levels with respect to buildings with different foundation conditions are presented. Basic concepts of pile dynamics and stress-wave measurements, which were developed for the determination of driving resistance and bearing capacity of impact-driven piles, provide important information about ground vibration induced by pile penetration. Dynamic hammer properties and geometry as well as the driving process are important for ground vibration emission from the pile. It is shown that the energy-based, empirical approach, which is still widely used by practicing engineers, is too crude …

Recent Geotechnical Developments In Geospatial Information Systems Technology, Ronaldo Luna, J. David Rogers Aug 2008

Recent Geotechnical Developments In Geospatial Information Systems Technology, Ronaldo Luna, J. David Rogers

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Geotechnical engineering projects in current research and practice are increasingly undergoing geospatial analysis based on geologic and geotechnical data collected. The explosion of spatial data that is available for surface features, particularly from the raster based products, heavily used by commercial and available to the public, present only one dimension of site characterization. Geotechnical engineers are more interested in data with depth immediately below their project site retrieve from drilled and imaged subsurface surveys. The ability to optimize the use of new and existing subsurface data continues to be undermined by the lack of a common and agreed data format …

Risk Analysis In Geotechnical And Earthquake Engineering: State-Of-The-Art And Practice For Embankment Dams, D. N. D. Hartford

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The nature of risk analysis as applied to earthfill dams for the purpose of safety assessment is examined with particular reference to the matter of demonstrating the scientific validity of risk constructs used to inform important dam safety decisions. The qualities and attributes of what would be considered to be transparent, credible and defensible risk analyses for dam safety decision-making are outlined. A conceptual approach to addressing the problem of quantifying internal erosion risk that combines critical state soil mechanics theory and dynamic event tree analysis is proposed. Finally, an experiment aimed at assessing contemporary capability to detect the “changes …

The Indispensable Role Of Case Histories In Landfill Engineering, Edward Kavazanjian Jr. Aug 2008

The Indispensable Role Of Case Histories In Landfill Engineering, Edward Kavazanjian Jr.

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Documented case histories are perhaps even more essential to the practice of landfill engineering than to other aspects of geotechnical practice. Case histories are particularly important to landfill engineering because of difficulties in sampling and testing representative materials and the non-homogeneous nature of many landfills. Case histories play an essential role in the evaluation of static and dynamic properties of waste, in identifying potential performance problems and failure mechanisms, and in demonstrating that laboratory interface shear testing can be relied upon to predict field behavior of liner and cover systems. Case histories have proven to be essential in establishing appropriate …

Evaluation Of The Experiences In Underwater Dam Construction On Soft Soils, W. F. Van Impe Aug 2008

Evaluation Of The Experiences In Underwater Dam Construction On Soft Soils, W. F. Van Impe

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The present paper illustrates the outcome of the monitoring of the consolidation behavior of a soft foundation soil under a large submerged sand embankment. Measurements of settlements and excess pore water pressures showed a good agreement with predictions evaluated using the large strain consolidation theory. Soft soil improvement by means of deep mixing has been optimized. Moreover, the principles and developments of underwater geosynthetics applications are discussed.

Design And Performance Of Deep Excavations In Soft Clays, Kjell Karlsrud, Lars Andresen Aug 2008

Design And Performance Of Deep Excavations In Soft Clays, Kjell Karlsrud, Lars Andresen

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The paper discusses major design aspects related to deep excavations in soft clays including; bottom heave stability; deformations and loads on the supporting structure; methods to improve stability and limit displacements; lessons learned from failures; and fi-nally design principles and safety aspects. The various issues are illustrated by both parametric finite element studies and experiences gained from specific case histories. The results show a strong correlation between bottom heave stability, loads and dis-placements, and significant arching effects when the bottom heave safety factor is low. 2 and 3D FEM analyses confirm the applicability of traditional limit equilibrium bottom heave stability …

Case Histories Of Foundations On Top Of A Rupturing Normal Fault During The Kocaeli 1999 Earthquake, G. Gazetas, I. Anastasopoulos

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Although the Kocaeli (Turkey) earthquake was triggered by reactivation of the North Anatolian strike-slip Fault, normal faulting also occurred within the pull-apart basin of Gölcük. Its effect on overlying structures is summarized in this paper. The normal rupture caused maximum vertical displacements of up to 2.5m. Several structures were crossed by the rupture. As expected, many of them either collapsed or were severely damaged. Surprisingly, several structures survived the dislocation with no damage, while in some cases the rupture deviated, “avoiding” the structures. The foundations of the involved structures comprised a variety of types, ranging from simple separate footings to …

Chacao Channel Bridge – The Design Challenges, Kostis Syngros, Ricardo Dobry, George E. Leventis Aug 2008

Chacao Channel Bridge – The Design Challenges, Kostis Syngros, Ricardo Dobry, George E. Leventis

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The Chacao Channel bridge, a planned privatized/concession bridge project, is to link the island of Chiloé with continental Chile through the Chacao Channel. When completed, it will be the longest suspension bridge in South America (2,365 m) with two approximately equal spans linking three pylons. The location of the bridge presents a combination of unprecedented challenges in the design and construction making it very unique, including: extreme seismicity with the largest earthquake recorded to date anywhere in the world having occurred very close to the envisioned bridge location (the 1960 Valdivia Earthquake with a moment magnitude of 9.5!); extremely strong …
