Theses and Dissertations

The United States Air Force is increasingly facing more diverse threat situations while existing force structure levels are being reduced and proposed compositions are being severely scrutinized for relevance, affordability, and effectiveness. Military planners are struggling with the question of how to generate a single force structure that can adequately respond to a multitude of threat scenarios in an uncertain future while at the same time being tasked to prove just how effective their choice will be. In the past, modeling has been effective in showing how a force can respond to a single threat scenario but a new modeling …

Investigation Of Ge2Te2Sb5 Chalcogenide Thin Film For Use As An Analog Memory, Travis F. Blake Mar 2000

Investigation Of Ge2Te2Sb5 Chalcogenide Thin Film For Use As An Analog Memory, Travis F. Blake

Theses and Dissertations

This work investigates the feasibility of using Ge2Te2Sb5 chalcogenide films for analog memory. Thick film chalcogenide memory devices provided by Ovonyx, Inc. are characterized to determine how well the devices meet the repeatability, stability and predictability criteria needed to accurately store analog data values. Chalcogenide memory devices take advantage of the phase-shifting nature of chalcogenide materials to store the analog data as a resistance level. An automated test system was developed to characterize the material and the prototype devices with the goal to determine the 1) non-destructive readability of the device at different resistance values; …

Finite Element Analysis Of A Composite Cylindrical Shell With A Cutout Under A Fatigue Load, Joshua T. Boatwright Mar 2000

Finite Element Analysis Of A Composite Cylindrical Shell With A Cutout Under A Fatigue Load, Joshua T. Boatwright

Theses and Dissertations

A higher-order shell theory is used to analyze compressive and tensile loads on a graphite/epoxy laminated cylinder containing a square cutout. The Hashin failure criterion is used to determine failure in the fiber, matrix, or lamination. Once failure occurs, the appropriate stiffness terms are reduced. This failure causes a redistribution of stress, leading to further failure. In order to account for the loss of residual strength due to cyclic loading, the stiffness matrix is further reduced at each new increment of load or displacement. The objective is not to determine the S-N curve for the material, but rather to determine …

A Tabu Search For Scheduling And Rescheduling Combat Aircraft, Kevin M. Calhoun Mar 2000

A Tabu Search For Scheduling And Rescheduling Combat Aircraft, Kevin M. Calhoun

Theses and Dissertations

Scheduling an air campaign is time and labor intensive. Exacerbating the problem, combat planners use manual methods to accomplish much of this daunting but critical task. While some work has been done to automate the process, the approaches used generate schedules that must undergo major modifications before they are "flyable." Planners, therefore, distrust the results and use the automated features of the software sparingly. Additional problems arise due to the lag time between the publication of the Air Tasking Order (ATO) and the start of the ATO day. During this time, conditions change in the dynamic battlespace (aircraft break, runways …

The Distributor’S Three-Dimensional Pallet-Packing Problem: A Mathematical Formulation And Heuristic Solution Approach, Brian P. Ballew Mar 2000

The Distributor’S Three-Dimensional Pallet-Packing Problem: A Mathematical Formulation And Heuristic Solution Approach, Brian P. Ballew

Theses and Dissertations

It is through practice and experience Air Force loadmasters are able to pack the Air Force standard HCU-6/E (463L) pallets efficiently. Although the loadmasters perform their jobs exceptionally well, the Air Force is in search of a model that will more efficiently pack the pallets. We have developed a mathematical formulation of the three-dimensional pallet-packing problem which minimizes the amount of unused space on a pallet. The formulation ensures each box is packed with the correct volume and dimensions, and ensures the volume of all the boxes packed is less than the available pallet volume. Additionally, the formulation ensures that …

With the initiation of the navigation accuracy prediction algorithm used to estimate the amount of GPS solution (location and time) error for receivers, the capability to accurately predict solution errors due to the major GPS error sources is growing. Although some sources of error within the GPS solution have been previously analyzed, modeled, and/or accounted for within various modeling efforts, a formal evaluation of the seven major error sources that distort GPS activity has not been officially conducted up until this point. This research offers a logical assessment of all the major GPS error sources and their definitive impact on …

An Incentive Model For International Telecommunications, Jeffrey R. Del Vecchio Mar 2000

An Incentive Model For International Telecommunications, Jeffrey R. Del Vecchio

Theses and Dissertations

This study developed a new defensive model for global voice communications. It uses a n-person, zero-sum, cooperative and non-cooperative game to optimize the coalitions revenue after the possibility of a network service provider being tampered by an adversary. This research optimized two measures of effectiveness (coalition revenue and network provider revenue) of international telecommunications coalitions by hardening network service providers and improving their respective revenue with incentives. A multi-criteria optimization problem was developed to establish the strategic competition between the coalition defender and attacker. Irrespective of the amount of incentives, a applicable hardening and tampering strategy can be obtained. All …

Realtime Color Stereovision Processing, Byron P. Formwalt Mar 2000

Realtime Color Stereovision Processing, Byron P. Formwalt

Theses and Dissertations

Recent developments in aviation have made micro air vehicles (MAVs) a reality. These featherweight palm-sized radio-controlled flying saucers embody the future of air-to-ground combat. No one has ever successfully implemented an autonomous control system for MAVs. Because MAVs are physically small with limited energy supplies, video signals offer superiority over radar for navigational applications. This research takes a step forward in real time machine vision processing. It investigates techniques for implementing a real time stereovision processing system using two miniature color cameras. The effects of poor-quality optics are overcome by a robust algorithm, which operates in real time and achieves …

Linking Engineer Career Orientation And Human Resource Management Practices: Does Fit Affect Retention?, Cynthia M. Davis Mar 2000

Linking Engineer Career Orientation And Human Resource Management Practices: Does Fit Affect Retention?, Cynthia M. Davis

Theses and Dissertations

Turnover of the Air Force civil engineering (CE) officers is becoming increasingly important, as levels of CE Captains consistently decreases. Allen and Katz (1986) identified three career orientations of engineers based on their job preference-project, professional, and management engineers. Shepard (1958) suggested a dual-ladder promotion system to meet the cancer desires of technical and management workers. Additional research has proposed "desired" Human Resource Management (HRM) practices to facilitate the retention of each type of career-based engineer (Lee and Maurer, 1997). In an effort to determine if these career orientations, along with Air Force HRM practices, were linked to declining retention, …

Feature Selection For Predicting Pilot Mental Workload, Julia A. East Mar 2000

Feature Selection For Predicting Pilot Mental Workload, Julia A. East

Theses and Dissertations

Advances in technology have the cockpits of the aircraft in the Air Force inventory increasingly complex. Consequently, mental demands on the pilot have risen. In some cases, mental demands were so overwhelming that pilots have forgotten basic flying techniques, such as G-straining maneuvers. The results have been fatal. Recent research in this area has involved collecting psychophysiological features, such as electroencephalography (EEG), heart, eye and respiration measures, in an attempt to identify pilot mental workload. This thesis focuses on feature selection and reduction of the psycophysiological features and subsequent classification of pilot mental workload on multiple subjects over multiple days. …

A Combined Inventory And Delivery Model For Repairable Items, Bahtiyar Eren Mar 2000

A Combined Inventory And Delivery Model For Repairable Items, Bahtiyar Eren

Theses and Dissertations

Traditionally, logistics analysts have treated the delivery problem separate from the inventory and repair problems. In other words, each of these three problems-delivery, inventory, and repair-are treated individually. We combine the vehicle routing problems and inventory allocation problems in a single formulation. Furthermore, lateral re-supply is considered, in that supplies are not only available from the main depot, but also from other bases. After we get the lateral re-supply information, we set a delivery allocation plan out of the main depot. Such allocations are then delivered via vehicles stationed at the main depot. There is a repair capability for each …

In Situ Treatment Of Chlorinated Ethene-Contaminated Groundwater Using Horizontal Flow Treatment Wells, Derek R. Ferland

Theses and Dissertations

The limitations of conventional containment technologies for groundwater contaminated with chlorinated solvents have motivated development of innovative technologies to achieve national groundwater remediation objectives. One inn9vative technology that is currently under development involves metal reductants or catalysts to chemically destroy the dissolved chlorinated solvent. Models are important tools that can be used to help transition this technology to the field. Model studies can be used to gain understanding about the technology, help determine when the prospective technology might work for a given site, and design full-scale field applications.

The Department of Defense has identified launch vibration isolation as a major research interest. Reducing the loads a satellite experiences during launch will greatly enhance its reliability and lifetime, and reduce payload structural mass. DoD space programs stand to benefit significantly from advances in vibration isolation technology. This study explores potential hybrid vibration isolation using active and adaptive control with a passive vibration isolator. The active control methods are Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) control and a skyhook damper. Lyapunov analysis is used to develop the structural adaptive control scheme. Simulink and Matlab simulations investigate these control methodologies on a lumped mass dynamic …

Toxicity Of Tolyltriazole To Gram-Positive Coccus Microorganisms, Heather L. Mitchell Mar 2000

Toxicity Of Tolyltriazole To Gram-Positive Coccus Microorganisms, Heather L. Mitchell

Theses and Dissertations

Maintaining safe flight operations, military and civilian, in cold weather requires the use of de-icing fluids. Glycols, the primary component of de-icers, have been extensively studied. Water and additives such as corrosion inhibitors and other performance enhancing chemicals make up the remaining portion of de-icing fluids. Little research has been conducted on the additives, but several are suspected toxins to microorganisms, therefore the EPA regulates the disposal of spent de-icing fluids. Tolyltriazole, a corrosion inhibitor found in de-icing fluids, is a suspected human carcinogen. It is also known to be moderately toxic to microorganisms based on Microtox results. The purpose …

This thesis provides a method to reduce physical resource requirements along with cost reduction in Space Based Radar (SBR) platforms, and provides a rule of thumb for randomization effects on arrays. A trend analysis is performed on 4, 8, 12, and 16 square meter arrays. Three aperiodic thinning approaches are examined. They are an equal current density element distribution, a random periodic grid of elements, and random element distribution based a peak sidelobe indicator. According to the metrics used, the statistical and deterministic array thinning approaches performed best for these small arrays. However, the statistical arrays have a scan angle …

Investigation Of Conformal High-Impedance Ground Planes, Michael A. Saville Mar 2000

Investigation Of Conformal High-Impedance Ground Planes, Michael A. Saville

Theses and Dissertations

Applique antennas are a long range vision for military vehicles because they are lighter, quicker to replace, less expensive, and can have better performance than conventional antennas. Two newly reported high-impedance ground planes have potential to begin the realization of the applique antenna vision and each is investigated for use with thin conformal antenna structures. Bistatic reflection measurements completely characterize the high-impedance region of planar, thumbtack high-impedance ground planes, and periodic moment method models validate the measurement results. Rigorous planar and conformal surface wave coupling measurements clarity the reported photonic band gap behavior of the thumbtack high-impedance ground plane, and …

Post-Processing Resolution Enhancement Of Open Skies Photographic Imagery, Daniel E. Sperl Mar 2000

Post-Processing Resolution Enhancement Of Open Skies Photographic Imagery, Daniel E. Sperl

Theses and Dissertations

The Treaty on Opens Skies allows any signatory nation to fly a specifically equipped reconnaissance aircraft anywhere over the territory of any other signatory nation. For photographic images, this treaty allows for a maximum ground resolution of 30 cm. The National Air Intelligence Center (NAIC), which manages implementation of the Open Skies Treaty for the US Air Force, wants to determine if post-processing of the photographic images can improve spatial resolution beyond 30 cm, and if so, determine the improvement achievable. Results presented in this thesis show that standard linear filters (edge and sharpening) do not improve resolution significantly and …

Mission Route Planning With Multiple Aircraft & Targets Using Parallel A* Algorithm, Ergin Sezer Mar 2000

Mission Route Planning With Multiple Aircraft & Targets Using Parallel A* Algorithm, Ergin Sezer

Theses and Dissertations

The general Mission Route Planning (MRP) Problem is the process of selecting an aircraft flight path in order to fly from a starting point through defended terrain to target(s), and return to a safe destination. MRP is a three-dimensional, multi-criteria path search. Planning of aircraft routes involves an elaborate search through numerous possibilities, which can severely task the resources of the system being used to compute the routes. Operational systems can take up to a day to arrive at a solution due to the combinatorial nature of the problem, which is not acceptable, because time is critical in aviation. Also, …
