Passwords: A Survey On Usage And Policy, Kurt W. Martinson Mar 2005

Passwords: A Survey On Usage And Policy, Kurt W. Martinson

Theses and Dissertations

Computer password use is on the rise. Passwords have become one of the primary authentication methods used today. It is because of their high use that organizations have started to place parameters on passwords. Are password restrictions a nuisance? What are some of the consequences that result as organizations place the burden of their computer security on passwords? This thesis analyzes the results of a survey instrument that was used to determine if individuals are using similar techniques or patterns when choosing or remembering their passwords. It also looks at how individuals feel about using passwords. In addition, the authors …

The Feasibility Of The U.S. Air Force Mandating The Exclusive Use And Purchase Of Forest Stewardship Council Certified Wood And Paper Containing 100% Post Consumer Content, Silinda Johnson Mar 2005

The Feasibility Of The U.S. Air Force Mandating The Exclusive Use And Purchase Of Forest Stewardship Council Certified Wood And Paper Containing 100% Post Consumer Content, Silinda Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act required federal agencies to purchase products with the highest recovered content (or post-consumer content in the case of paper) as practicable. The Office of Federal Procurement Policy required all executive agencies to give preference in their procurement programs to products that conserve natural resources and protect the environment. These requirements necessitate that the Air Force consider purchasing 100% post-consumer content (PCC) paper and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified wood because of their environmentally preferable attributes. This study compared the availability, performance standards, and prices of 100% PCC paper to 30% PCC paper and FSC-certified …

Daytime Detection Of Space Objects, Alistair D. Funge Mar 2005

Daytime Detection Of Space Objects, Alistair D. Funge

Theses and Dissertations

Space Situational Awareness (SSA) requires repeated object updates for orbit accuracy. Detection of unknown objects is critical. A daytime model was developed that evaluated sun flares and assessed thermal emissions from space objects. Iridium satellites generate predictable sun glints. These were used as a model baseline for daytime detections. Flares and space object thermal emissions were examined for daytime detection. A variety of geometric, material and atmospheric characteristics affected this daytime detection capability. In a photon noise limited mode, simulated Iridium flares were detected. The peak Signal-to- Noise Ratios (SNR) were 6.05e18, 9.63e5, and 1.65e7 for the nighttime, daytime and …

Performance Based Service Acquisition: A Quantitative Evaluation Of Implementation Goals And Performance In The United States Air Force, Dylan D. Pope Mar 2005

Performance Based Service Acquisition: A Quantitative Evaluation Of Implementation Goals And Performance In The United States Air Force, Dylan D. Pope

Theses and Dissertations

In an attempt to maximize cost savings in the rapidly growing services sector, the DoD established a Performance Based Service Acquisition (PBSA) strategy that focuses on evaluating contractor performance based on their ability to meet desired outcomes rather than the means to which the outcomes are obtained. In April 2000, Dr. Gansler, then Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics, mandated that 50 percent of all eligible service acquisitions be awarded using PBSA methods by FY 2005. Since then very little research has been focused on USAF implementation of PBSA and the progress and attainment of the PBSA …

Enabling Intrusion Detection In Ipsec Protected Ipv6 Networks Through Secret-Key Sharing, Patrick J. Sweeney Mar 2005

Enabling Intrusion Detection In Ipsec Protected Ipv6 Networks Through Secret-Key Sharing, Patrick J. Sweeney

Theses and Dissertations

As the Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) implementation becomes more widespread, the IP Security (IPSec) features embedded into the next-generation protocol will become more accessible than ever. Though the network-layer encryption provided by IPSec is a boon to data security, its use renders standard network intrusion detection systems (NIDS) useless. The problem of performing intrusion detection on encrypted traffic has been addressed by differing means with each technique requiring one or more static secret keys to be shared with the NIDS beforehand. The problem with this approach is static keying is much less secure than dynamic key generation through the …

Performance Of A Spectrally Encoded Multi-Carrier Phase Shift Keying Communications System In A Frequency-Selective, Slowly-Fading Multipath Channel, Charles M. Gaona Mar 2005

Performance Of A Spectrally Encoded Multi-Carrier Phase Shift Keying Communications System In A Frequency-Selective, Slowly-Fading Multipath Channel, Charles M. Gaona

Theses and Dissertations

This research examines the performance of a spectrally encoded, multi-carrier, phase shift keying communications system in a frequency-selective, slowly-fading multipath channel. The specific communications system modeled is the transform domain communication system (TDCS) originally researched as an interference avoidance technique. Previous TDCS research assumed an additive white Gaussian noise channel, which is not representative of a realistic environment. This thesis presents overviews of previous TDCS research, the multipath fading channel, and the RAKE receiver. Analysis and Matlab simulations compare the performance of spectrally encoded and un-encoded signals through a multipath fading channel using an L-diversity TDCS RAKE receiver. Encoded signals …

Head Tracking For 3d Audio Using A Gps-Aided Mems Imu, Jacque M. Joffrion Mar 2005

Head Tracking For 3d Audio Using A Gps-Aided Mems Imu, Jacque M. Joffrion

Theses and Dissertations

Audio systems have been developed which use stereo headphones to project sound in three dimensions. When using these 3D audio systems, audio cues sound like they are originating from a particular direction. There is a desire to apply 3D audio to general aviation applications, such as projecting control tower transmissions in the direction of the tower or providing an audio orientation cue for VFR pilots who find themselves in emergency zero-visibility conditions. 3D audio systems, however, require real-time knowledge of the pilot's head orientation in order to be effective. This research describes the development and testing of a low-cost head …

Finite Difference Time Domain (Fdtd) Analysis Of A Leaky Traveling Wave Microstrip Antenna, Gregory M. Zelinski Mar 2005

Finite Difference Time Domain (Fdtd) Analysis Of A Leaky Traveling Wave Microstrip Antenna, Gregory M. Zelinski

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis provides the groundwork that will enable the development of a lightweight, inexpensive, aerodynamic, and broadband antenna. Whether for radar or communication, an antenna with these properties would be a force multiplier for the smaller, limited payload air vehicles the United States Air Force will pursue in the coming years. Several microstrip antennas using the first higher order mode were simulated with the Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method. The propagation constant of each antenna was extracted from the resulting field distribution for comparison with a transverse resonance approximation, measured far-field patterns, and other simulated antennas. Variations of the geometry were …

Doppler Aliasing Reduction In Wide-Angle Synthetic Aperture Radar Using A Linear Frequency Modulated Random Stepped-Frequency Waveform, Jason R. Mcmahon Mar 2005

Doppler Aliasing Reduction In Wide-Angle Synthetic Aperture Radar Using A Linear Frequency Modulated Random Stepped-Frequency Waveform, Jason R. Mcmahon

Theses and Dissertations

This research examines the theory, application, and results of using Random Stepped-Frequency (RSF) waveforms to mitigate Doppler aliasing in a wide-angle Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imaging scenario. Severe Doppler aliasing typically occurs in this scenario since range extent requirements force the pulse repetition frequency to a value violating the lower bound for Doppler aliasing. Building on previous research, this work expands upon RSF waveform analysis using a Linear Frequency Modulated RSF (LFM-RSF) waveform. The RSF waveform suppresses Doppler aliasing by positioning nulls at the aliased scatterer location. Applying LFM with RSF processing theoretically provides greater frequency coverage and aliased scatterer …

Engineering Tools For Variable Stiffness Vibration Suppression And Isolation, Michael F. Winthrop Jan 2005

Engineering Tools For Variable Stiffness Vibration Suppression And Isolation, Michael F. Winthrop

Theses and Dissertations

With the advent of smart materials, the concept of semi-active control or dynamic control of stiffness and/or damping for vibration control of structures has become practical and has seen limited use. Semi-active control has advantages over active and passive control methods, since it provides almost as much capability as active control while requiring much less power. Its main disadvantage is its inherent nonlinearity, greatly complicating engineering design. The purpose of this research is to extend semi-active control vibration isolation tools and methods considering space launch and on-orbit systems.

In particular, radar detection performance is characterized using a basic radar receiver model and operational parameters consistent with those of the ARSR-4 air route surveillance radar. Two modern wideband signals (interferers) are addressed in this work, including the GPS military signal (M-Code signal) and a direct sequence ultra wideband (DS-UWB) waveform meeting outdoor emission restrictions imposed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Interference effects are characterized for an unmodulated sinusoidal pulse as well as linear frequency modulated (LFM) …

Non-Cooperative Detection Of Ultra Wideband Signals, Brett D. Gronholz Dec 2004

Non-Cooperative Detection Of Ultra Wideband Signals, Brett D. Gronholz

Theses and Dissertations

Techniques for the non-cooperative (non-matched filter) detection of impulse-like ultra wideband signals using channelized receiver architectures are developed and evaluated. Each technique considered is modeled and simulations conducted to characterize detection performance, the results of which are compared with the detection performance of three receivers: the matched filter receiver, which provides optimum detection performance in AWGN; the radiometer, or energy detector; and the multi-aperture cross correlation receiver. It is shown that a channelized receiver (with no downconversion) can provide approximately 2.5 dB improvement over the radiometer when performing detection using the temporal-temporal matrix (TTM). The TTM processing technique provides the …

Effects Of Variable Contact Load On Fretting Fatigue Behavior Of Shot-Peened And Un-Peened Titanium Alloy, Chia-Hawa Lee Dec 2004

Effects Of Variable Contact Load On Fretting Fatigue Behavior Of Shot-Peened And Un-Peened Titanium Alloy, Chia-Hawa Lee

Theses and Dissertations

Fretting fatigue occurs between two components in contact under relative motion and reduces fatigue life when compared with plain fatigue. Shot-peening, on the other hand, is the most commonly used cold working process to improve material fatigue resistance in aeronautical industries. Nearly all work accomplished to date has assumed a constant contact load while investigating fretting fatigue. The primary goal of this study was to explore fretting fatigue behavior under constant and variable contact load configurations using both shot-peened and un-peened specimens made up of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Contact loads were applied with four different frequencies. Applied axial loads were also …

Consistency Results For The Roc Curves Of Fused Classifiers, Kristopher S. Bjerkaas Dec 2004

Consistency Results For The Roc Curves Of Fused Classifiers, Kristopher S. Bjerkaas

Theses and Dissertations

The U.S. Air Force is researching the fusion of multiple classifiers. Given a finite collection of classifiers to be fused, one seeks a new classifier with improved performance. An established performance quantifier is the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve, which allows one to view the probability of detection versus the probability of false alarm in one graph. Previous research shows that one does not have to perform tests to determine the ROC curve of this new fused classifier. If the ROC curve for each individual classifier has been determined, then formulas for the ROC curve of the fused classifier exist …

Trade Space Analysis Of Antenna Array Architecture Using System Modeling Tools, Eugene Johnson Dec 2004

Trade Space Analysis Of Antenna Array Architecture Using System Modeling Tools, Eugene Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

This trade study has two objectives. The first provides a trade space analysis of differing array architectures and associated radio frequency components using system-modeling tools. The second objective develops system modeling tools aiding similar analysis by other users. These objectives were accomplished by evaluating a selected group of output parameters to include overall system cost, mass, and power consumption, as well as the minimum detectable input level, system spurious free dynamic range, and selected beam spoilage parameters caused by the use of discrete phase shifters. A fixed number of designs were evaluated using simulation. The evaluation process examined input parameter …

Electrostatic Radio Frequency (Rf) Microelectromechanical Systems (Mems) Switches With Metal Alloy Electric Contacts, Ronald A. Coutu Jr. Sep 2004

Electrostatic Radio Frequency (Rf) Microelectromechanical Systems (Mems) Switches With Metal Alloy Electric Contacts, Ronald A. Coutu Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

RF MEMS switches are paramount in importance for improving current and enabling future USAF RF systems. Electrostatic micro-switches are ideal for RF applications because of their superior performance and low power consumption. The primary failure mechanisms for micro-switches with gold contacts are becoming stuck closed and increased contact resistance with increasing switch cycles. This dissertation reports on the design, fabrication, and testing of micro-switches with sputtered bi-metallic (i.e., gold (Au)-on-Au-(6.3at%)platinum (Pt)), binary alloy (i.e., Au-(3.7at%)palladium (Pd) and Au-(6.3at%)Pt), and ternary alloy (i.e., Au-(5at%)Pt-(0.5at%)copper (Cu)) contact metals. Performance was evaluated, in-part, using measured contact resistance and lifetime results. The micro-switches with …

Analytical Solution For Low-Thrust Minimum Time Control Of A Satellite Formation, John Sang-Pil Seo Sep 2004

Analytical Solution For Low-Thrust Minimum Time Control Of A Satellite Formation, John Sang-Pil Seo

Theses and Dissertations

Satellite formations or distributed satellite systems provide advantages not feasible with single satellites. Efficient operation of this platform requires the use of optimal control of the entire satellite formation. While the optimal control theory is well established, only a very simple dynamical system affords an analytical solution. Any practical optimal control problem solves the resulting two-point boundary value (TPBV) problem numerically. The relative satellite dynamics using Hill's coordinate system and approximations made by Clohessy and Wiltshire, combined with body-fixed thruster control, result in a linearized dynamic system. This dissertation provides the analysis for the minimum time satellite formation control by …

The Physical Understanding Of The Use Of Coatings To Mitigate Hypervelocity Gouging Considering Real Test Sled Dimensions, Andrew G. Szmerekovsky Sep 2004

The Physical Understanding Of The Use Of Coatings To Mitigate Hypervelocity Gouging Considering Real Test Sled Dimensions, Andrew G. Szmerekovsky

Theses and Dissertations

A dimensional analysis with accompanying numerical investigation is conducted. A simplified model of the real test sled is created that allows test sled dimensions to be converted to a numerical model for analysis. The dimensional analysis is used as a means of directly applying the numerical results to real test sled conditions. Similarity principles are studied and tested by comparing the results from scaled numerical models. Strain rate and other time dependent parameters are not scaled, but the effect of these parameters may be quantified and studied further. The dimensional analysis also provides a comprehensive approach to the test sled …

Role Of Plasticity On Fretting Fatigue Behavior Of Ti-6al-4v, Kisu Shin Sep 2004

Role Of Plasticity On Fretting Fatigue Behavior Of Ti-6al-4v, Kisu Shin

Theses and Dissertations

Fretting fatigue generally leads to the degradation of the fatigue strength of a material due to cyclic micro-slip between two contacting materials. Fretting fatigue is regarded as an important issue in designing aerospace structures. While many studies have evaluated fretting fatigue behavior under elastic deformation conditions, few studies have focused on fretting fatigue behavior under elastic-plastic deformation conditions. The primary goal of this study was to characterize the fretting fatigue crack initiation behavior in the presence of plasticity. Experimental tests were performed using pad configurations involving elastic-plastic deformations. In order to calculate stress distributions under elastic-plastic fretting fatigue conditions, FEA …

Quantifying Initial Condition And Parametric Uncertainties In A Nonlinear Aeroelastic System With An Efficient Stochastic Algorithm, Daniel R. Millman Sep 2004

Quantifying Initial Condition And Parametric Uncertainties In A Nonlinear Aeroelastic System With An Efficient Stochastic Algorithm, Daniel R. Millman

Theses and Dissertations

There is a growing interest in understanding how uncertainties in flight conditions and structural parameters affect the character of a limit cycle oscillation (LCO) response, leading to failure of an aeroelastic system. Uncertainty quantification of a stochastic system (parametric uncertainty) with stochastic inputs (initial condition uncertainty) has traditionally been analyzed with Monte Carlo simulations (MCS). Probability density functions (PDF) of the LCO response are obtained from the MCS to estimate the probability of failure. A candidate approach to efficiently estimate the PDF of an LCO response is the stochastic projection method. The objective of this research is to extend the …

Hybrid Stochastic Models For Remaining Lifetime Prognosis, Steven M. Cox Aug 2004

Hybrid Stochastic Models For Remaining Lifetime Prognosis, Steven M. Cox

Theses and Dissertations

The United States Air Force is developing its next generation aircraft and is seeking to reduce the risk of catastrophic failures, maintenance activities, and the logistics footprint while improving its sortie generation rate through a process called autonomic logistics. Vital to the successful implementation of this process is remaining lifetime prognosis of critical aircraft components. Complicating this problem is the absence of failure time information; however, sensors located on the aircraft are providing degradation measures. This research has provided a method to address at least a portion of this problem by uniting analytical lifetime distribution models with environment and/or degradation …
