Age Hardening Of Copper Antimony Alloys, William R. Stern

A large number of alloys of varying percentages of copper and antimony were prepared. These alloys were treated in various ways which might be expected to produce age hardening. The effect of cold working was studied in the range where the alloys were malleable.

An electrodeposition of an iron-manganese alloy was made from the same conditions determined by previous re­search. Various addition agents were experimented with in an attempt to produce better conditions for electro-deposition. It was found advantageous to add small a­mounts of sodium lauryl sulfate and ammonium sulfite to the electrolyte.

Recent demands for petroleum to carry on the war effort have resulted in widespread prospecting in the northern Great Plains. Nearly all oil wells now drilled are of a depth to penetrate the marine Jurassic formations. It is known that these strata differ in thickness from place to place, but information of distribution, thickness, and lithology has not yet been compiled.

"This thesis was written in consideration of problems arising in present day use of battery operated seadrome lights. The information contained has been compiled to explain the development of a radically new design in seadrome lighting. Use of a selected single lighted strip is the basis of the design. The seadrome light described is a submergible type and is essentially a modification and combination of the 100 watt beacon lights, used with the Type B-2 portable field lighting set; and the American Gas Accumulator Company Portable Lighting Set PAM-2. At the time of the last field work in November, 1940, the boring program for borrow areas and for foundation had been completed.

"Phosphorus first joined the ranks of large-tonnage industrial raw materials about ten years ago, with the development of the electric furnace method for its production from rock phosphate. For many years before the present era of large-scale production, phosphorus had been little more than a laboratory curiosity. I. SCOPE OF THIS REPORT (1) Twenty-six tension tests were carried out on specimens cut from the steel from which the beams of the present series were formed. (2) Two specimens of beam 6 - 3 - 16 were tested in the same manner as described in the preceding report. These are replacement specimens furnished by the manufacturer for two beams damaged in the original shipment. (3) The greater part of the evaluation of the results of all twenty-six beam tests was completed and the entire evaluation will be discussed in the next report.

I. SCOPE OF THIS REPORT 24 symmetrical I-beams were tested in bending. They represent 12 different types of beams, with two beams of each type. The beams are formed from two identical channels, furnished with lips on both flanges, joined by bolting in the web. These tests complete the entire series of such I-beams, except for one type (two specimens) which arrived in damaged condition and are now being replaced by the manufacturer.
