A study of the drying of Buna-S in crumb form (designated as GR-S) is presented in which investigations of vacuum and air drying are made. The drying characteristics are presented and the effect of drying on the quality is evaluated. Vacuum drying is investigated using a shelf and a rotary type unit. The individual effects of temperature, vacuum, thickness of crumb layer, and size of crumb particles are studied. Data are correlated by means of drying rate curves. Comparisons of the effects of the variables are made using these curves. Air drying is studied by the use of a shelf …

The Development Of Ethyl Cellulose Lacquers For Automotive Use : An Ethyl Cellulose Lacquer For Coating Plastics., Robert Carlton Krueger

There have been developed various colored ethyl cellulose lacquers that compare favorably with standard nitrocellulose lacquers in physical tests. Ultra violet light caused rather pronounced darkening of the lighter colors such as white and light yellow, probably because of the use of high amounts of phenolic resin. Also because of the presence of relatively large amounts of phenolic resin, the cost was somewhat higher than a comparable nitrocellulose lacquer. Suggestions for further work and improvement are included. An ethyl cellulose lacquer has also been developed to be applied by spray or brush to ethyl cellulose plastics with a minimum amount …

This thesis is an attempt to establish the applicability of a statistical method of quality control to several problems involving maintenance of fuel quality standards. Although the technique has found increasingly important applications in mass production industries, its use in analysis of fuel characteristics has been given little, if any, study if current catalogues of the literature are authoritative. Analyses of data drawn from publications of the Bureau of Vines have been used to test the limitations of the method. Original data collected by the author shows statistical control to exist over sufficient samples to assure the soundness of conclusions …

I. SCOPE OF THIS REPORT In the Twenty-fifth Progress Report a series of twenty-three tests was reported on web crippling under concentrated loads. On the basis of these tests the design requirements of section 4.9 of the Tentative Specifications (April 1944 edition) were written. The scope of these tests, however, was not broad enough to insure safe design stipulations for all important cases for the following reasons: (a) Of the twenty-three tests six were conducted with roller loading (zero bearing length), and therefore are not represetative of acutal conditions. I. SCOPE OF THIS REPORT This report contains the complete evaluation of test results of the I-beam tests reported on in the 33rd and 34th Beam Reports. In considering the results of this evaluation, two factors should be kept in mind which adversely affect the accuracy of results: (l) These beams were designed primarily to serve as control specimens for future channel tests. Their usefulness in verifying the equivalent width approach is somewhat impaired by the fact that the compression flanges represent only a rather small part of the total cross-sectional area. The original objective of this project was to determine the effect of varying current intensity and electrode coating composition upon the spatter losses and porosity of arc welds made by alternating current. This subject was suggested by the Welding Research Council of the Engineering Foundation, which is a clearing house for welding research in order to avoid du­plication of work.
