Diffusion Coefficient From Hydrogen Ion Exchange Studies, Michael Maxwell Kahn, Norman A. Martin Jun 1959

Diffusion Coefficient From Hydrogen Ion Exchange Studies, Michael Maxwell Kahn, Norman A. Martin

Theses

The study of monovalent and bivalent ion diffusion coefficients was undertaken to determine the practicability of using the Reichen berg equation to calculate a film thickness from a single diffusion coefficient and through the use of this film thickness to predict the diffusion coefficient of any monovalent or bivalent ion.

Experimentation employed the use of a mixing vessel with a two bladed propellor into which a solution of known ion concentration was kept at a constant temperature and mixing speed. Dowex 50 x -8 hydrogen ion type resin was added to the solution and by means of a pH meter …

The Electrolytic Reduction Of Ethyl Paranitrobenzoate, Matthew Felix Lipworth Jun 1959

The Electrolytic Reduction Of Ethyl Paranitrobenzoate, Matthew Felix Lipworth

Theses

The factors governing the electrolytic reduction of ethyl para-nitrobenzoate have been investigated, and conditions established for the optimum yield of the end-product benzocaine. The formation of intermediate compounds was studied, and a mechanism for the reduction favoring the mono-molecular route has been suggested. The material costs of the electrolytic reduction have been shown to compare favorably with the material costs of a chemical reduction, such as the Bechamp process.

Collection Of Germanium From Acid Etch Waste By Ion Exchange, Robert Welsh Meyler Jun 1959

Collection Of Germanium From Acid Etch Waste By Ion Exchange, Robert Welsh Meyler

Theses

This report is an investigation of the use of ion exchange resins to recover germanium from acid etch wastes encountered in transistor manufacture.

Most of the experiments were performed with acid etch waste of unknown germanium content. The object was to determine if the ion exchange technique were applicable, and to select the most practical operating procedure.

When a satisfactory procedure had been established, later experimental runs were made with an acid etch solution of known germanium concentration to determine the yields of recovered germanium.

Yields of 60 per cent to 75 per cent recovery of germanium from the etch …

Salt Effects On Distribution Of Fatty Acids, John Henry Sivori Jun 1959

Salt Effects On Distribution Of Fatty Acids, John Henry Sivori

Theses

Data are reported on the extraction of formic, acetic, propionic, and butyric acids from water with methyl isobutyl ketone. Prime consideration is given to the effect of an added inorganic salt, calcium chloride, and also to the effect of the presence of a common ion on the distribution of the acids in the solvent-water system. Extraction into the solvent phase is increased by the addition of calcium chloride, but only slightly affected by the addition of a common ion.

Batch Heating And Cooling Nomographs, Stephen Zakanycz Jun 1959

Batch Heating And Cooling Nomographs, Stephen Zakanycz

Theses

Heat transfer problems associated with batch heating and cooling processes are relatively complex since conditions of unsteady state prevail. Complex mathematical equations are available which relate the time required to heat or cool a quantity of material in a specific piece of equipment or to design heat exchangers to transfer the desired amount of heat in a specified time. By the use of alignment charts, these equations are solved graphically with speed and accuracy. Nomographs are presented for equations dealing with heating and cooling agitated batches, counterflow and nonisothermal medium for two cases: coil-in-tank or jacketed vessel and external heat …

A Reactor Transfer Function Analyzer, Earl O. Swickard Jr Jun 1959

A Reactor Transfer Function Analyzer, Earl O. Swickard Jr

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

This thesis describes the design of a device for determining the transfer function of a nuclear reactor. A number of different methods have been successfully employed for this purpose but were, in some cases, tedious or required the use of delicately balanced components. The equipment described computes values which are simply related to the values of the transfer function and is operable over a frequency range of about 1000:1. The time required to obtain data for one frequency point is two minutes or less. No precise adjustment is necessary during operation.

A Study Of The Application Of Digital Computers For Controlling Vehicle Traffic At A Signalized Intersection, John V. Wait Jun 1959

A Study Of The Application Of Digital Computers For Controlling Vehicle Traffic At A Signalized Intersection, John V. Wait

Civil Engineering ETDs

This study outlines a method whereby a small, specialized "on-line" digital computer could be used to control urban vehicle traffic at a signalized intersection. In the basic system proposed, the computer uses as input data a "history" of the instantaneous vehicle flow, in terms of number of cars arriving and arrival time. The data are stored for a period of 240 seconds in a magnetic drum memory. Once each 1/2 second, the computer examines the arrival pattern of cars and compares the delay being imposed on the waiting cars versus the delay which would be imposed on the cars on …

Identification Of Inclusions In Armco Ingot Iron By The Use Of Polarized Light, Carl A. Plate Jun 1959

Identification Of Inclusions In Armco Ingot Iron By The Use Of Polarized Light, Carl A. Plate

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

It is the author's hope that by systematically investigating the inclusions in ingot iron and comparing their specific properties with the properties of substances known to exist as inclusions, a rapid and accurate method may be found to identify them using a polarizing microscope. Where possible photomicrographs will be used to illustrate the results obtained so that the reader may obtain a better picture of the effects produced by polarized light.

An Investigation Of The Fundamental Factors Affecting The Green Ball Characteristics In Pellet Formation, Thomas J. Wright Jun 1959

An Investigation Of The Fundamental Factors Affecting The Green Ball Characteristics In Pellet Formation, Thomas J. Wright

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The purpose of this investigation is to determine the relative effects on the quality and characteristics of the pellets. Once the major factors effecting agglomerating materials are understood, formerly poor and nonagglomerating materials may be affected so that they will produce good quality agglomerates. Should the factors prove difficult to vary or impossible at least they may be identified and understood, thus serving as a guide for further attack or judgment in overall process design.

The Effect Of Thermal Treatment On The Engineering Properties Of Clays, George R. Laughlin Jun 1959

The Effect Of Thermal Treatment On The Engineering Properties Of Clays, George R. Laughlin

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Of the cohesive soils the property of plasticity is usually of the most concern to the engineer. The clay minerals rather than the clay size material present in a soil determine the degree and magnitude of plastic properties. In turn, the plasticity of the clay minerals varies according to their mineralogy and particle size. Of the various types of clay minerals present in a soil, only kaolinite, illite and montmorillonite occur in sufficient abundance to be of general engineering significance.

Much prior work has been performed to alter these plastic properties of clay soils. This has been accomplished in some …

Lean Concretes Using Kentucky's Dense Graded Aggregate (Portland Cement And Ss-1 Emulsified Asphalt), James H. Havens, Milton Evans Jr. Jun 1959

Lean Concretes Using Kentucky's Dense Graded Aggregate (Portland Cement And Ss-1 Emulsified Asphalt), James H. Havens, Milton Evans Jr.

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Since the development of dense-graded aggregate base in Kentucky about 1952, there have been various conjectures about "auto-cementations" or "setting" of these materials when compacted and cured. In some cases, particularly when the material was limestone, they have developed rather surprising strengths, in the field as well as in the laboratory. Such displays of strength seem to be directly associated with curing (slow drying) and the possibility of re-deposition of small amounts of dissolved calcium carbonate as cement. If this is so, it might be surmised that bases which have not been "fixed" by curing and drying before surfacing may …

The Plastic Design Of Steel Cofferdam, Robert O. Disque May 1959

The Plastic Design Of Steel Cofferdam, Robert O. Disque

Theses

The fundamental purpose of this thesis is to employ the plastic theory in the design of a hypothetical steel sheet pile cofferdarm. Prior to undertaking this work, the author had had no previous experience with the plastic theory. Therefore, a portion of this thesis is devoted to the development of the fundamentals necessary for the actual design computations.

The theory of plastic analysis has been used as far back as the 1920's in Hungary for the structural design of apartment buildings. It is, however, only in recent years that the theory has been utilized to a significant degree in this …

Heat Transfer By Natural Convection In Horizontal Fluid Layers : A Statistical Correlation Of Experimental Data, John Lawrence O'Toole May 1959

Heat Transfer By Natural Convection In Horizontal Fluid Layers : A Statistical Correlation Of Experimental Data, John Lawrence O'Toole

Theses

The rate of heat transfer due to natural convection in confined, horizontal, fluid layers can be expressed by equations involving the dimensionless parameters Nusselt No., Rayleigh No., and Prandtl No., where Rayleigh No. equals the product of Grashof and Prandtl Nos.

Statistical correlation by stepwise multiple regression of experimental data obtained from four different investigators, on both gases and liquids, yields three separate equations corresponding to three distinct regimes of convection. The total range spanned by the data is from the onset of convection to Rayleigh = 109.

The equations are Regime Ra Range Equation Std. Error of Estimate Initial …

The Volumetric Analysis Of Nitrocompounds Using Chromous Chloride, Charles Caslin Jamison May 1959

The Volumetric Analysis Of Nitrocompounds Using Chromous Chloride, Charles Caslin Jamison

Theses

Chromous chloride has been shown to be more efficient than titanous chloride in the reduction of refractory nitro and nitramine groups in both aromatic and aliphatic compounds.

It was found that concentrated hydrochloric acid increases the efficiency of chromous chloride to a point where it would reduce the most difficult to deduce nitro-campounds.

The compounds studied were p-Nitromethylaniline, 2,4-Dinitrotoluene, 2,4-Dinitroaniline, 2,4,6-Trinitrotoluene, Nitroguanidine, I,9-Di4cetoxy-2,4,6,8-penta-methylenetetranitramine, Sym-Cyclotrimethylenetrinitrimine, and Sym-Cyclotetramethylenetetranitramine.

An Investigation Of The Effectiveness Of Certain Organic Compounds In The Flotation Of Manganese Oxide Minerals, Johannes P. Dreyer May 1959

An Investigation Of The Effectiveness Of Certain Organic Compounds In The Flotation Of Manganese Oxide Minerals, Johannes P. Dreyer

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

This thesis has to do with the selective flotation of the manganese oxide minerals in an ore from Charco Redondo Mine, Oriente Province, Cuba. Since a sound knowledge of the nature of the emulsion-induced flotation process of these minerals does not exist, experimental research constitutes the most valuable resource for determining the extent to which different reagents influence the process. Moreover, a correlation of experimental results with the chemical and physical properties of the minerals and reagents can lead to the improvement of existing theories regarding the mechanism of a process.

Separation And Concentration Of Stibiconite, William Howard Painter May 1959

Separation And Concentration Of Stibiconite, William Howard Painter

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Primarily, the purpose of this study is to separate stibiconite from associated gangue minerals. The ore containing antimony, as an oxide stibiconite, occurs in Mexico and its benefication would be an advantage to the mineral resources of that country. While the deposit from which this ore is derived is American owned, the resource is presently non-economic. A concentrate must be derived of suitable grade for its use in a smelting operation and from which metallic antimony would be produced.

Electrical Methods Of Mineral Concentration, Gordon F. Ziesing May 1959

Electrical Methods Of Mineral Concentration, Gordon F. Ziesing

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The evaluation of a mineral-dressing method cannot be carried out successfully without an initial understanding of the basic fundamentals and concepts governing the operation of the method. Experimentation, governed by the understanding of the basic concepts, together with intelligent conclusions based on the experimental data, complete the evaluation of the dressing method.

Electrical concentration, being the given dressing method, will be evaluated as discussed above. As they are thoroughly covered by Mora (13), the fundamental concepts will not be given a lengthy discussion.

Shear Strength Of Simply Supported Prestressed Concrete Beams Having Web Enforcement, Randolph E. Holt May 1959

Shear Strength Of Simply Supported Prestressed Concrete Beams Having Web Enforcement, Randolph E. Holt

Civil Engineering ETDs

The problem of shear strength in pre-stressed concrete beams is analogous to that in ordinary reinforced concrete, since there is very little difference between reinforced concrete and pre-stressed concrete beams in the cracked condition. Until very recently, the knowledge of the shear strength of reinforced concrete members and pre-stressed concrete members was wholly statistical. Developments in the last few years have advanced it to the semi-empirical level, 5,6,7 but our knowledge of the effect that shear has on the ultimate strength of reinforced and pre-stressed concrete members is still far from complete.
