A Comparison Of A-C And D-C Lead Compensation From D-C Prototype Networks, Piyush Parikh Jan 1962

A Comparison Of A-C And D-C Lead Compensation From D-C Prototype Networks, Piyush Parikh

Masters Theses

"The object of this thesis is to study the difference in transient and frequency response characteristics between a prototype d-c phase lead compensating network and an equivalent a-c phase lead compensating network.

A second order servo is selected to be compensated and five d-c prototype and equivalent a-c phase lead compensating networks are designed. The frequency characteristics of the a-c networks are obtained experimentally and these of the d-c networks are obtained analytically. The characteristics of both networks are compared and their differences are studied. The transient characteristics of the d-c and a-c compensated closed-loop systems to a step input …

A Model Study Of The Induction Log Applied To The Detection Of Asymmetrically Located Orebodies, Robert Walter Piekarz Jan 1962

A Model Study Of The Induction Log Applied To The Detection Of Asymmetrically Located Orebodies, Robert Walter Piekarz

Masters Theses

"This research project was undertaken to determine the possibility of using an induction log of the type applied in petroleum exploration, for the detection of conductive ore- bodies asymmetrically located with respect to a borehole. Since a mathematical analysis would be extremely complex, a model study was conducted, using graphite bodies of various shapes to simulate different modes of mineral occurence.

The investigation showed that these bodies were readily detectable, and were capable of yielding anomalous curves characteristic of their geometry. The values of apparent conductivity decreased rapidly with lateral displacement, from the logging tool, as expected, due to the …

A Correlation Of Heat Transfer Coefficients Using An Induction Heater, Charles Maurice Martin Jan 1962

A Correlation Of Heat Transfer Coefficients Using An Induction Heater, Charles Maurice Martin

Masters Theses

"This thesis represents a study of the following problems. (1) Determination of techniques and equipment which would give satisfactory correlation of experimental heat transfer coefficients with those obtained from acceptable heat transfer equations when using an induction heater as the heat source. (2) Determination of depth of energy deposition in a thick-walled tube due to induction heating.

Techniques were developed that gave a correlation between experimental and calculated coefficients that were within -5% for minimum flow and +8% for maximum flow.

Because of difficulties in positioning thermocouples, the depth of energy deposition could not be accurately determined. However, two surface …

A Comparison Of The Load Carrying Characteristics Of Hydrostatic Thrust Bearing Using Monatomic, Diatomic, And Triatomic Gases, Joseph C. Pigott Jan 1962

A Comparison Of The Load Carrying Characteristics Of Hydrostatic Thrust Bearing Using Monatomic, Diatomic, And Triatomic Gases, Joseph C. Pigott

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation is to compare the load carrying characteristics of gases with different ratios of specific heat. The design, construction, and operation of an apparatus for testing and comparing the load carrying characteristics of gases are described. Several monatomic, diatomic, and triatomic gases were tested and the results evaluated and compared. The data are tabulated and displayed in a series of curves.

It was found that the monatomic gases exhibit a greater clearance for a given load and a greater total load carrying capacity than the diatomic gases which in turn have a greater clearance and total …

A Comparison Of Backwater Profile Computation, Alwin Chang Hsin Young Jan 1962

A Comparison Of Backwater Profile Computation, Alwin Chang Hsin Young

Masters Theses

"Bakhmeteff's, Von Seggern's, and the Standard Step methods were chosen for a comparative study of backwater profile determinations made with the assistance of a digital computer. This study concentrated on the M-l type of curves for different kind of prismatic channels; i.e. rectangular, trapezoidal, and parabolic channels. From the results obtained by each method for different channels, the consistency between the several methods and their applicability to all shapes of channel had been studied. Also the effect of the number of reaches used in flow profile determinations, the effect of the use of an average value of (1-ß), hydraulic exponents …

An Investigation Of The Deformation Textures Of Cobalt, Roy Carl Wilcox Jan 1962

An Investigation Of The Deformation Textures Of Cobalt, Roy Carl Wilcox

Doctoral Dissertations

"Deformation textures of various cobalt structures as a result of cold rolling together with some annealing textures were studied. The textures of cobalt were determined using a modification of the Schulz-Decker Geiger counter technique. Pole figures of the (1011), (0001) and (1010) planes were constructed. Also, a study of the microhardness of cobalt was made.

Microhardness tests were performed on various cobalt structures, in both the cold rolled and unworked conditions. The microhardness was found to vary with the source of the cobalt, the crystal orientation, and the amount of deformation and twinning. Deformation lines about the hardness impressions diffused …

Detection Of Rust Formed Under Paint Films, James Larry Inglis Jan 1962

Detection Of Rust Formed Under Paint Films, James Larry Inglis

Masters Theses

"Corrosion is an evil that has plagued man since before the iron age. Three ways of controlling corrosion are: 1. alloy the metal to make it chemically inert to corrosion, .2. change the surroundings to a noncorrosive atmosphere, and 3. isolate the metal from the corrosive atmosphere, as for instance by the application of a number of coats of paint that has been found to be the most economical method.

At present, there is no reliable method of testing the effectiveness of a paint film that does not require the corrosion products to destroy the paint film and show themselves …

Development Of A Simple Bar Method Thermal Conductivity Test, V. J. Flanigan Jan 1962

Development Of A Simple Bar Method Thermal Conductivity Test, V. J. Flanigan

Masters Theses

"A linear flow bar method type apparatus was set up for finding thermal conductivities by comparison techniques. Comparison technique consist of using a standard specimen where the thermal conductivity is known and comparing it to the unknown specimens to find their conductivity. Apparatus of this type usually uses thermocouples for the required temperature measurements, but thermistors were used in this experiment. The thermistors used required calibration to measure accurate temperatures and this was accomplished by using the known temperatures of the changes of state of some common materials. Five alloys were used to evaluate the method: SAE 1020 steel, gray …

The Effect Of The Rolling Load On The Micro-Structure Of Low Carbon Sheet Steel, Jerry Lee Cadden Jan 1962

The Effect Of The Rolling Load On The Micro-Structure Of Low Carbon Sheet Steel, Jerry Lee Cadden

Masters Theses

"A Stanat 315, two high-four high, combination rolling mill is used to cold roll annealed, low carbon steel strips. A method of measuring the rolling load was presented. The method consisted of constructing a load cell using SR-4 strain gages attached to a steel column. The load cell was placed under the hold down screw of the rolling mill and a known load was applied. The stresses from this load were transferred to the mill housing where another SR-4 strain gage was located. The strain in the mill housing was recorded at the corresponding applied load. During rolling, the strain …

A Weight Loss Technique For The Determination Of Phase Boundaries, Robert Lee Benner Jan 1962

A Weight Loss Technique For The Determination Of Phase Boundaries, Robert Lee Benner

Masters Theses

"An apparatus has been designed and constructed that would continuously record the weight loss of a sample in a flowing inert atmosphere, at a constant temperature.

A technique has been developed to determine the phase boundaries of a binary phase diagram.

Alloys of the magnesium-nickel, cadmium-antimony, copper-cadmium, copper-zinc, and magnesium-zirconium systems were subjected to investigation to verify the operation and resolve a number of limitations of the equipment.

These investigations disclosed that the apparatus gave the best results with alloys having vapor pressures in the range between 1 and 35 millimeters of mercury"--Abstract, page 2.
