Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: In the process of multi-robot path planning (MRPP), the unavoidable key conflicts between the optimal paths have a significant impact on the efficiency of path solving. To address this issue, an MRPP method based on variable suboptimal factors of prioritizing conflicts (PC) was proposed. Path search was performed at the lower layer of the explicit estimation conflict-based search (EECBS) algorithm; in the upper layer of the EECBS algorithm framework, the PC was determined, and the suboptimal factor of the robot with key conflicts was adaptively increased; by analyzing the distribution of obstacles in the surrounding neighborhoods of key conflicts, …

Slam Dynamic Algorithm Based On Improved Feature Description, Qiang Fu, Xianyun Teng, Yuanfa Ji, Fenghua Ren
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: The original ORB descriptor algorithm has a low matching accuracy and long matching time, the positioning accuracy and robustness of the SLAM(simultaneous localization and mapping) system are severely disturbed by moving objects in dynamic scenes, and the ORB-SLAM3 system is incapable of constructing dense maps. To address the above problems, this paper proposes an improved ORB-SLAM3 based on the BEBLID descriptor and object detection. A lightweight YOLOv5s dynamic object detection network and dynamic feature removal module are fused with the tracking thread to improve the system's positioning accuracy. Replacing the original feature description algorithm, an improved local image descriptor …

Improvement Of A* Algorithm In Path Planning Of Mobile Robot, Dexin Yao, Hongjun San, Yaru Wang, Haijie Sun, Jiupeng Chen, Xiaoyuan Yang
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: To solve the problems of excessively redundant nodes, low search efficiency, and excessive path turning angle in the path search of the traditional A* algorithm, an improved A* algorithm is proposed to plan the optimal path. First, the amount of search neighborhood of the A* algorithm is increased to 24 to obtain a more accurate and comprehensive search field. Second, the angle search algorithm is introduced, eliminating the unnecessary nodes in the path search and making the search more target-oriented. Third, the heuristic function is weighted by the exponential attenuation through the relative position of the current point and …

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Underrepresented minority (URM) faculty face challenges in many domains of academia, from university admissions to grant applications. We examine whether this translates to promotion and tenure (P&T) decisions. Data from five US universities on 1,571 faculty members' P&T decisions show that URM faculty received 7% more negative votes and were 44% less likely to receive unanimous votes from P&T committees. A double standard in how scholarly productivity is rewarded is also observed, with below-average h-indexes being judged more harshly for URM faculty than for non-URM faculty. This relationship is amplified for faculty with intersectional backgrounds, especially URM women. The differential …

Multi-Step Ahead Water Level Forecasting Using Deep Neural Networks, Fahimeh Sharafkhani, Steven Corns, Robert Holmes
Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Stream gauge height (water level) is a significant indicator for forecasting future floods. Flooding occurs when the water level exceeds the flood stage. Predicting imminent floods can save lives, protect infrastructure, and improve road traffic management and transportation. Deep neural networks have been increasingly used in this domain due to their predictive capabilities in capturing complex features and interdependencies. This study employs four distinct models—Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), transformer, and LSTNet—with MLP serving as the baseline model to forecast water levels. The models are trained using data from 20 distinct river gages across the state of Missouri …

Public health practitioners often have the goal of monitoring patients and maximizing patients’ time spent in “favorable” or healthy states while being constrained to using limited resources. Restless multi-armed bandits (RMAB) are an effective model to solve this problem as they are helpful to allocate limited resources among many agents under resource constraints, where patients behave differently depending on whether they are intervened on or not. However, RMABs assume the reward function is known. This is unrealistic in many public health settings because patients face unique challenges and it is impossible for a human to know who is most deserving …
