Solar energy utilization and desalination are both critical needs for large portions of the world facing energy and water challenges. Direct contact membrane distillation is an attractive thermally driven desalination technique that can easily be integrated with solar energy. Here we propose and experimentally demonstrate for the first time a hybrid direct contact membrane desalination plus photovoltaic device. The system utilizes partially transparent photovoltaic cells to produce electricity and pass thermal energy to the nanoparticle doped membrane to produce thermal energy at the membrane surface. A custom lab-scale direct contact membrane distillation setup characterizes the membranes fabricated off-sun and on-sun. …

Spatial Transformation Of A Layer-To-Layer Control Model For Selective Laser Melting, Xin Wang, Robert G. Landers, Douglas A. Bristow

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Selective Laser Melting (SLM) is an Additive Manufacturing (AM) technique with challenges in its complexity of process parameters and lack of control schemes. Traditionally, people tried time-domain or frequency-domain control methods, but the complexity of the process goes beyond these methods. In this paper, a novel spatial transformation of SLM models is proposed, which transforms the time-domain process into a spatial domain model and, thus, allows for state-space layer-to-layer control methods. In a space domain, this also provides the convenience of modelling laser path changes. Finally, a layer-to-layer Iterative Learning Control (ILC) method is designed and demonstrates the methodology of …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Modularized designs have been widely used in today's consumer electronic devices and flexible RF springs are used for electrical connections between the modules. In the meantime, aluminum alloy material becomes a common chassis option. It is well known that the oxidized chassis surface introduces a certain level of nonlinearity when contacted by the springs, as known as passive intermodulation (PIM). PIM is one of the well-known root causes of the RF desensitization (desense). This paper is focused on investigating the relationship between PIM and contact conditions of the springs, especially contact area. The PIM level behavior is explained mathematically by …

Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper presents the opportunity gap for comics in engineering education, through reflections from a team redesigning a mechanical engineering syllabi using illustrations. To increase a sense of belonging among diverse students, the authors of this paper propose a graphic narrative focused on the curriculum of the mechanical engineering department at a large public university in Western United States. We hope that this paper addresses the underutilized and largely missed opportunity to add engagement, better conceptual understanding, and improve inclusion in engineering classrooms through incorporating visual illustrations.

Integrating Temperature Dependence Into A Microstructure-Sensitive Fatigue Model For Titanium Alloys, Jared Michael Darius Jan 2022

Integrating Temperature Dependence Into A Microstructure-Sensitive Fatigue Model For Titanium Alloys, Jared Michael Darius

Masters Theses

This work seeks to integrate temperature dependence into a microstructure-sensitive fatigue model for titanium alloys produced by both extrusion and electron beam melting (EBM) additive manufacturing, revising and enhancing the MultiStage Fatigue (MSF) model as the foundational model framework. Traditional fatigue modeling has required design engineers to conservatively use a lower-bound estimate of fatigue life predictions given a statistically significant spread of experimental data that can span up to two or sometimes three orders of magnitude for a given test condition. This variation in fatigue data has since been accounted for with the advent of the MSF model, linking individual …

Magneto-Exothermic Catalytic Chemical Reaction Along A Curved Surface, Muhammad Ashraf, Uzma Ahmad, Saqib Zia, Rama S. R. Gorla, Amnah S. Al-Johani, Ilyas Khan, Mulugeta Andualem

Faculty Publications

In the current study, the physical behavior of the boundary layer flows along a curved surface owing exothermic catalytic chemical reaction, and the magnetic field is investigated. The mathematical model comprised of a part of momentum, energy, and mass equations, which are solved using a finite difference method along with primitive variable formulation. Numerical solutions, using the method of quantitative differentiation, are made with the appropriate choice of dimensionless parameters. Analysis of the results obtained shows that the field temperature and flow of fluids are strongly influenced by the combined effects of catalytic chemical reactions and the magnetic field. The …

Experimental Study Of Wall Bounded Harbor Seal Whisker Inspired Pin Geometries, Anish Prasad, Mark Ricklick

Publications

Conventional cylindrical/elliptical pins are one of the most widely used geometries in convection cooling systems and are used in the internal cooling of gas turbine blades and other applications, as they promote better heat transfer at the expense of large pressure losses and unsteadiness in the flow. The need to reduce pressure drop and maintain the heat transfer rates are a pressing requirement for a variety of industries to improve their cooling efficiency. One such prominent field of research is conducted in optimizing the design of pin geometries. In this study, a harbor seal whisker inspired geometry is being studied …

About 40 million tons of lubricants are used every year for various industry purposes and applications, where most of them are petroleum based oils. These oils are difficult and expensive to dispose of, have low biodegradability and are contamination risks. Recent efforts have been focused on reducing the environmental impact of petroleum based lubricants through the use of vegetable oils since they are biodegradable and have good lubricity. A drawback of vegetable oils is their poor thermal stability and oxidation, which causes them to decrease their properties at higher loads. Nanoparticle (NP) additives have been explored for improving the tribological …

A Physics-Based Model For Frost Buildup Under Turbulent Flow Using Direct Numerical Simulations, ‪Nadim Zgheib, N. Farzaneh, S. Balachandar, S. A. Sherif

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

We present a new model for frost buildup under turbulent (and laminar) flow using direct numerical simulations. The physical model consists of two layers, the air and the frost. The air layer is fully resolved and consists of solving for the velocity, temperature, and vapor mass fraction fields. The frost layer thickness is resolved using conservation of mass and energy. Both phases are dynamically coupled using the immersed boundary method. Three-dimensional simulations are conducted in an open-channel configuration. A number of challenges need to be overcome to make these simulations feasible. First, to enforce far-field conditions of zero …

Assembly Of Alumina Particles In Aqueous Suspensions Induced By High‐Frequency Ac Electric Field, James E. John, Shizhi Qian, Dipankar Ghosh

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

The role of high-frequency alternating current (AC) electric field in the assembly of alumina particles in aqueous media was investigated. Field–particle interactions were in situ investigated for coarse and fine powder particles in very dilute suspensions. For both coarse and fine particles, AC field-induced assembly led to the formation of chains of particles within a minute, which were aligned in the field direction. However, a much finer network of particle chains evolved in fine particle suspensions. Threshold field strength for chain formation was also lower for fine particles (28 V/mm) than for coarse particles (50 V/mm), suggesting stronger interactions for …

Solute Concentration Effects On Microstructure And The Compressive Strength Of Ice-Templated Sintered Lithium Titanate, Rohan Parai, Ziyang Nie, Raina Hempley, Gary M. Koenig Jr., Dipankar Ghosh

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

This work investigated the role of sucrose and cationic dispersant (1‐hexadecyl)trimethylammonium bromide concentration on ice‐templated sintered lithium titanate microstructure and compressive strength, to enable a comprehensive understanding of composition selection and elucidate processing–microstructure–mechanical property relationships. Sucrose and dispersant concentrations were varied to change total solute concentration in suspensions and viscosity. Dispersant was more effective in reducing viscosity than sucrose; however, their combination had an even greater impact on reducing viscosity. Based on viscosity measurements, a total of 12 suspension compositions were developed, and materials were fabricated at two different freezing front velocity (FFV) regimes. Solute concentration greatly influenced ice‐templated microstructure …

Graphene has generated substantial interest as a filler due to its exceptional strength, flexibility, and conductivity but faces obstacles in supply and implementation. A renewable, plant-based graphene nanoparticle (pGNP) presents a more accessible filler with the same properties as mineral graphenes. In this study, we examine the effects of pGNP, which was sprayed on a carbon fiber/epoxy prepreg at loadings from 1.1 to 4.2 g/m2. The study considered the mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties of pGNP-composite. An even particle dispersion was achieved using a spray application of pGNP in a water/alcohol suspension with the addition of surfactants and …

We experimentally and theoretically investigate the thermal conductivity and mechanical properties of polycrystalline HKUST-1 metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) infiltrated with three guest molecules: tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ), 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (F4-TCNQ), and (cyclohexane-1,4-diylidene)dimalononitrile (H4-TCNQ). This allows for modification of the interaction strength between the guest and host, presenting an opportunity to study the fundamental atomic scale mechanisms of how guest molecules impact the thermal conductivity of large unit cell porous crystals. The thermal conductivities of the guest@MOF systems decrease significantly, by on average a factor of 4, for all infiltrated samples as compared to the uninfiltrated, pristine HKUST-1. This reduction in thermal conductivity goes in …
