Dynamic Rbi With Central Difference Method Approach In Calculation Of Uniform Corrosion Rate: A Casestudy On Gas Pipelines, M.Riefqi Dwi Alviansyah, Fernanda Hartoyo, Zahra Nadia Nurullia, Ari Kurniawan
Journal of Materials Exploration and Findings
The oil and gas industry generally uses a piping system to drain fluids. Even though the pipes used have been well designed, the use of pipes as a means of fluid transportation still provides the possibility of failure that can occur at any time, one of which is due to uniform corrosion. The use of standard Risk Based Inspection (RBI) according to the API RBI 581 document has been widely used to anticipate potential failures to pipe components. The use of standard RBI can reduce the risk of failure significantly. Because the standard RBI considers the component risk value to …

High Voltage Aqueous Electrolyte Based Structural Supercapacitors For Electric Vehicles, Deepak Pandey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
The current electric vehicles (EVs) face many challenges like limited charge capacity, low miles/charge, and long charging times. Herein, these issues are addressed by developing "energized composite," which is a multifunctional supercapacitor-based energy-storing carbon fiber reinforced polymer composite that can store supplemental electric energy and function as the body shell of EV's. This is achieved by developing a unique design, vertically aligning graphene sheets on carbon fiber electrodes and depositing metal oxides to obtain high energy density electrodes. A high-strength multilayer composite is fabricated using an alternate layer pattern configuration of epoxy and polyacrylamide gel electrolyte. The composite so developed …

Journal of Materials Exploration and Findings
Significant growth of gas demand as a source of power generation for domestic use and industries, mainly in the developed countries, has forced the effort to secure the gas supplies located thousands of miles away across the sea as an economical way of gas transportation instead of transporting by pipeline. LNG technology was created as the solution. Natural gas is refrigerated below its boiling point (-160oC to -162oC), known as cryogenic temperature or cryogenic service. Material of Construction (MOC) selection report showed that 304/304L and 316/316L Stainless Steel pipe could withstand and be suitable for this …

Ceria Defect Engineering Using Thin-Films/Ald And Biological Applications, Udit Kumar
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Ceria nanostructures have been utilized for various engineering applications due to their unique defect structure, enabling them to have regenerative redox properties. The ability to shuttle between Ce3+ and Ce4+ oxidation states extends to unique properties. Defect level in ceria is usually expressed in the Ce3+/Ce4+ ratio. It can be achieved by varying the size(0 to 3D), morphologies, dopants, hetero-nanostructures, and external stimuli. However, it is still a challenge to have precise control over defect structures in the ceria lattice. The current study aims to explore the thin film deposition techniques for cerium oxide using ALD (Atomic layer deposition) and …

A Constitutive Material Model For Simulating Texture Evolution And Anisotropy Effects In Cold Spray., Creston Michael Giles
Theses and Dissertations
Cold spray has seen rapid advancement since its inception and has shown significant potential as a method of additive manufacturing. However, the large plastic deformation and repeated heating/cooling cycles that the material undergoes during the cold spray process can result in gradients in material structure and large residual stresses. The purpose of this study is to extend the existing EMMI material model to include anisotropic material response through the use of orientation distribution functions to predict residual stresses and anisotropy resulting from cold spray and similar additive manufacturing processes. Through the use of a finite element simulation, yield surfaces for …

One of the most widely used metals on the periodic table is Platinum (Pt). The name is derived from the Spanish Platina, meaning “silver.” This malleable, ductile material is widely used in applications due to its unique chemical properties. A couple of these unique properties include a high melting point and good resistance to corrosion or chemical attack. Platinum materials have alloys that are indispensable in the chemical laboratory for electrodes. This allows for material applications in crucibles and dishes to withstand elevated temperatures. Platinum is used primarily in catalytic converters in vehicles converting emissions from the vehicle’s engine into …

ME 4133/6133 Mechanical Metallurgy
High-carbon steel can be processed through numerous methods. The method that will be focused on primarily is processing high-carbon steel through means of additive manufacturing. Additive manufacturing is the industrial production name for 3D printing, a computer-controlled process that creates three-dimensional objects by depositing materials, usually in layers. AM methods like wire laser additive manufacturing (WLAM) and electron beam melting (EBM) are all common methods for fabricating high carbon steel. The perks associated with these methods are that they improve some drawbacks of the natural properties of high-carbon steel. This paper discusses the uses of these additive manufacturing methods along …

ME 4133/6133 Mechanical Metallurgy
The first known use of carbon steel dates back to 500 A.D. when a blacksmith mistakenly used iron ore as a primary material for smithing. This material, as the name suggests, is made up of both carbon and iron. This material, as one of the most abundant at the time, was used most frequently in European and Asian countries. “Carbon steel first appeared around the year 500 AD in Damascus steel swords as well as Japanese swords. They were prized for their sharp edges and sturdiness compared to other weapons of the era. The composition of these swords was very …

Integration Of Hadfield Steel Into Modern Body Armor, Jason T. Fridlund
ME 4133/6133 Mechanical Metallurgy
The increased lethality of recently fielded projectiles mandates a proportional escalation in armor performance. Recent advancements in ceramic technologies have allowed designers to incorporate harder but more brittle materials into hard armor designs to defeat yet more capable penetrating projectiles. Ceramics suffer from the feature of shattering, however, even when impacted by threats below their design parameters. While this shattering mechanism is used effectively to dissipate energy from high-energy rifle projectiles, it is wasted on low-energy projectiles, and can result in easily damaged lifesaving gear, both of which are undesirable in combat. In contrast, steel body armor has been used …

Cold plasma (CP) is an effective strategy to alter the limitations of biopolymer materials for food packaging applications. Biopolymers such as polysaccharides and proteins are known to be sustainable materials with excellent film-forming properties. Bio-based films can be used as an alternative to traditional plastic packaging. There are limitations to biopolymer packaging materials such as hydrophobicity, poor barrier, and thermos-mechanical properties. For this reason, biopolymers must be modified to create a packaging material with the desired applicability. CP is an effective method to enhance the functionality and interfacial features of biopolymers. It etches the film surface allowing for better adhesion …

Two-dimensional (2D) layered materials offer unique properties that make them attractive for continued scaling in electronic and optoelectronic device applications. Successful integration of 2D materials into semiconductor manufacturing requires high-volume and high-precision processes for deposition and etching. Several promising large-scale deposition approaches have been reported for a range of 2D materials, but fewer studies have reported removal processes. Thermal atomic layer etching (ALE) is a scalable processing technique that offers precise control over isotropic material removal. In this work, we report a thermal ALE process for molybdenum disulfide (MoS2). We show that MoF6 can be used as …

Thermal Effect On Dislocation Interactions In Magnesium Alloy, Yuzhi Zhu, Yi Chen, Dewen Hou, Zidong Wang
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
In this work, dislocation interactions are directly observed and analyzed by using in-situ transmission electron microscope during heating processes in a pre-deformed Mg-3Al-1Zn magnesium alloy. Thermodynamic behaviors of two types of dislocations are investigated, i.e., individual dislocations and low-angle grain boundary arranged by dislocations. The results show that the low-angle grain boundary remains stable as the heating temperature increases to 673 K, while most of the individual dislocations disappear until the heating temperature reaches 473 K. Furthermore, the low-angle grain boundary tends to absorb individual dislocations nearby. The stability and the annihilation of both types of dislocations are discussed.
Physical Modeling Of Filament Growth And Resistive Switching In Metal Oxide-Based Rram, Kena Zhang
Physical Modeling Of Filament Growth And Resistive Switching In Metal Oxide-Based Rram, Kena Zhang
Material Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Metal oxide-based resistive random-access memories (RRAM) exhibit several excellent performances, such as nanosecond switching speed, large write-erase endurance, and long retention time, and can potentially replace the traditional circuit elements for use as the fundamental units in next-generation hardware deep-learning or neuromorphic systems. The functionality of a metal oxide-based RRAM is attributed to an oxygen vacancy (V_O^(..))-rich conductive filament (CF), which initially forms, and later dissolves or regrows inside the oxide layer during the resistive switching process. However, the complicated interplays among the coexisting chemical, electrical, mechanical, and thermal effects during the formation, growth, and rupture of the CFs make …

Sub-10k Cold-Electron Injection To Silicon At Room Temperature, Ojas Tushar Bhayde
Material Science and Engineering Theses - Archive
The Fermi-Dirac thermal excitation of electrons results in unwanted off-state leakage currents in metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs), leading to excessive power consumption in modern electronic devices. The electron thermal excitation results in a theoretical subthreshold slope limit of 60 mV/decade at room temperature, which forces the devices to use a high supply voltage leading to high power consumption. This study investigates a new architecture capable of suppressing electron thermal excitation by using a quantum well (QW) as an energy filter. The QW energy filter is composed of a tunneling barrier 1 (0.5 to 1 nm Al2O3 or 0.3-1 nm Si3N4 …

Wet Chemical Synthesis And Properties Of Argyrodite Sulfide Solid Electrolytes For Solid State Lithium Batteries., William Arnold
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The commercialization of the lithium-ion battery (LIB) in 1991 was responsible for the explosion in portable electronic technologies that has been seen over the past 30 years. With the advent of electric vehicles and other high-powered technologies, there is tremendous demand for LIBs with higher energy density and high safety. To achieve this, new electrode materials must be explored. The obvious choice of anode material would be pure metal lithium, which has a theoretical specific capacity of 3860 mAh g-1 . Unfortunately, metal lithium anodes have not been widely commercialized due to their tendency to react violently with the …

Design, Fabrication, And Characterization Of Conjugated Polymeric Electrochemical Memristors As Neuromorphic/Integrated Circuits, Benjamin Grant
All Dissertations
Organic materials are promising candidates for future electronic devices compared to the complementing inorganic materials due to their ease of processability, use, and disposal, low cost of fabrication, energy efficiency, and flexible nature toward implementation as flexible and non-conformal devices. With that in mind, electrochemical materials have been widely demonstrated with commercial use as sensors, displays, and a variety of other electronic devices. As Moore's law predicts the increase in the density of transistors on a chip, the requirement to create either smaller transistors or the replacement of the transistor device entirely is apparent. Memory resistors, coined ``memristor", are variable resistive …

Heteroepitaxy Of Gasb On Gaas (111)A For Electron Transport Studies, Madison Drake
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
III-V semiconductors grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) on (111) surfaces have some interesting electronic properties. For certain materials with a (111)-orientation, the Γ- and L-valleys are reasonably close in energy. This means that it may be possible to take advantage of electron conduction in the L- and Γ-valleys at the same time, allowing us to overcome the so-called “density-of-states bottleneck,” and enable transistors with large drive currents.1 We have investigated this phenomenon in GaSb- and InAs-based 2D electron gases for which the electron effective masses are low.
However, growth of materials with a (111) orientation is typically more …
