Quantum-Based First-Principles Study Of Gas Molecules (O2 , Co2 , No2 ) Interaction On Monolayer Germanene, Arief Hermanto, Harmon Prayogi, Ari Dwi Nugraheni, Juliasih Partini, Sholihun Sholihun

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

We perform calculations of the adsorption energy of O2, CO2, and NO2 molecules on germanene by using the density functional theory (DFT). We find two favorable configurations for O2, the U-site and V-site configurations with similar adsorption energies of -4.10 and -4.32 eV. As for NO2, we find two favorable configurations, the T-site and DB-site configurations. The T-site configuration is 0.98 eV more stable than the IB-site one, and both configurations are chemically adsorbed by germanene. On the contrary for CO2, we find a T-site configuration with adsorption energy of 0.42 eV and the configuration physically adsorbed by germanene.

Molybdenum Disulfide-Zirconium Dioxide Composite With Enhance Supercapacitance Performance, Razan Nadhim Shaker, Sami Mohammed, Yousra Ali Abdulsayed

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

As a supercapacitor active material, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) layer offers good conductivity, large surface area, and electrochemical stability. In practice, however, its capacitance is low in comparison to other materials. This work synthesized MoS2-zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) composite in a simple, high-throughput way to test it as a supercapacitor active layer. During the tests, the composite shows a gravimetric capacitance of 500.0 F⸳g-1, while MoS2 and ZrO2 have capacitances of 265.12 and 152.43, respectively. The increase in capacitance of composite stems from the synergistic effect between ZrO2's pseudocapacitor behavior and MoS2's electric double layer capacitance (EDLC). Moreover, the composite has a …

A Partial Discharge Inception Voltage Modeling Approach, Shilpi Mukherjee, Tristan Mark Evans, David Huitink, H. Alan Mantooth

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

A partial discharge inception voltage modeling approach promoting design-for-reliability considerations in advanced power modules is presented. As power modules are being operated at higher voltages and become more compact to meet power density demands, there is an increased risk of partial discharge, the silent precursor to electrical breakdown that degrades insulation material. The trade-off between voltage class and module compaction must be quantified. This work presents a methodology to model the tradeoff for any substrate and encapsulant material. A surface charge density-based partial discharge inception voltage (PDIV) model was developed to overcome the challenges in electric field-based models. The model …

Synthesis Of Quasi-Freestanding Graphene Films Using Radical Species Formed In Cold Plasmas, Michael A. Mathews Jr.

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

For over a decade, the Stinespring laboratory has investigated scalable, plasma assisted synthesis (PAS) methods for the growth of graphene films on silicon carbide (SiC). These typically utilized CF4-based inductively coupled plasma (ICP) with reactive ion etching (RIE) to selectively etch silicon from the SiC lattice. This yielded a halogenated carbon-rich surface layer which was then annealed to produce the graphene layers. The thickness of the films was controlled by the plasma parameters, and overall, the process was readily scalable to the diameter of the SiC wafer.

The PAS process reproducibly yielded two- to three-layer thick graphene films …

Preparation Of Highly-Cyclized Sulfurized Polyacrylonitrile For Lithium-Sulfur Batteries, Xuan Ji, Jia-Yu Wang, An-Bang Wang, Wei-Kun Wang, Ming Yao, Ya-Qin Huang

Journal of Electrochemistry

Sulfurized polyacrylonitrile (SPAN) is regarded as an attractive cathode candidate of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries for its non-dissolution mechanism and effective alleviation of polysulfides shuttling issue in Li-S batteries, displaying high utilization of cathode active material, outstanding cycle stability and structural stability. However, the relation between cyclization degree and cycle stability of SPAN is still unveiled. In this work, SPAN-C-V composites were synthesized by co-introduction of CuSO4 and zinc n-ethyl-n-phenyldithiocarbamate (ZDB) in the co-heating of sulfur and polyacrylonitrile. The co-introduction of CuSO4 and ZDB reduced the cyclization reaction onset temperature of PAN while increased the C—C/C=C within SPAN-C-V, thus …

Elucidating The Synergic Effect In Nanoscale Mos2/Tio2 Heterointerface For Na-Ion Storage, Chunrong Ma, Dewen Hou, Jiali Jiang, Yanchen Fan, Xiang Li, Tianyi Li, Zifeng Ma, Haoxi Ben, Hui Xiong

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Interface engineering in electrode materials is an attractive strategy for enhancing charge storage, enabling fast kinetics, and improving cycling stability for energy storage systems. Nevertheless, the performance improvement is usually ambiguously ascribed to the “synergetic effect”, the fundamental understanding toward the effect of the interface at molecular level in composite materials remains elusive. In this work, a well-defined nanoscale MoS2/TiO2 interface is rationally designed by immobilizing TiO2 nanocrystals on MoS2 nanosheets. The role of heterostructure interface between TiO2 and MoS2 by operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction (sXRD), solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance, and density functional …

Engineering Order-Disorder Transitions For High-Performance Thermoelectric Fe2val Heusler Alloys, Cory T. Cline

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Fe2VAl shows great promise as an eco-friendly and low-cost replacement to conventional low-temperature (250-500 K) thermoelectric materials. Current thermoelectric materials use toxic and expensive elements like Te and Sb, whereas Fe2VAl offers a larger power factor at a lower cost and a reduced risk of environmental pollution. The key issue with Fe2VAl is the alloy’s relatively large thermal conductivity compared to its semiconductor competitors. This thesis aims to investigate a hierarchical approach to reduce lattice thermal conductivity through a preliminary exploration of heavy element substitutions and mechanical deformation, then through probing order-disorder transitions for …

Void-Semiconductor Gaas Photonic Crystal Surface-Emitting Lasers By Epitaxial Regrowth And Single-Epitaxy Methods, Kevin James Reilly Dec 2022

Void-Semiconductor Gaas Photonic Crystal Surface-Emitting Lasers By Epitaxial Regrowth And Single-Epitaxy Methods, Kevin James Reilly

Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs

Monolithic semiconductor lasers including edge-emitting lasers (EELs) and vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) fail to realize simultaneous achievement of both high-power high-quality beams due to intrinsic limitations of their resonant cavity. Photonic crystal surface emitting lasers (PCSELs) address these structural limitations through employment of a two-dimensional photonic crystal (PC) cavity that creates feedback at a single wavelength for laterally scalable devices. This function of the PC allows PCSELs to power scale with area while maintaining single-mode emission required for diffraction-limited beams. In this way, PCSELs fulfill an industry demand for high-power high-quality lasing from a single chip.

Early PCSELs were fabricated …
