Effects Of Elevated Temperature On The Physical Aging Of A High Temperature Thermoplastic Resin And Composite, Mark Feldman Jul 1996

Effects Of Elevated Temperature On The Physical Aging Of A High Temperature Thermoplastic Resin And Composite, Mark Feldman

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Development of a High Speed Civil Transport is considered by the commercial aviation industry to be one of the next big challenges for our national aircraft industry. Critical to the success of this aircraft is the development of advanced polymeric composites for both the primary and secondary structures and the predictive methodology necessary for assessment of long term durability. While polymeric composites offer an excellent strength to weight ratio a key disadvantage is the time dependent properties exhibited by the polymer matrix which can age and ultimately effect the resultant stiffness of a laminate.

Experimental studies were performed to determine …

Purple membrane (PM, λ" role="presentation">λmax" role="presentation">max 570 nm) of H. halobium on treatment with sulphuric acid changes its colour to blue (λ" role="presentation">λmax" role="presentation">max 608 nm). The purple chromophore can be regenerated from the blue chromophore by exogeneous addition of anions such as CI−" role="presentation">− and HPO42−" role="presentation">2−4. Chloride ion is found to be more effective than the dibasic phosphate ion in regenerating the purple chromophore. Nevertheless, one thing common to the anion regeneration is that both CI−" role="presentation">− and HPO42−" role="presentation">2−4 show marked pH effect. At pH 1.0 the efficiency of …

Design Of Gradient Index Optical Thin Films, Jeffrey J. Druessel Jun 1996

Design Of Gradient Index Optical Thin Films, Jeffrey J. Druessel

Theses and Dissertations

Gradient index thin films provide greater flexibility for the design of optical coatings than the more conventional 'layer' films. In addition, gradient index films have higher damage thresholds and better adhesion properties. This dissertation presents an enhancement to the existing inverse Fourier transform gradient index design method, and develops a new optimal design method for gradient index films using a generalized Fourier series approach. The inverse Fourier transform method is modified to include use of the phase of the index profile as a variable in rugate filter design. Use of an optimal phase function in Fourier-based filter designs reduces the …

In Situ Studies Of Copper Electrodepostion On Hopg By Using Ecstm, Zhaoxiong Xie, Bingwei Mao, Xiangdong Zhuo, Jiqian Mu, Zhaowu Tian

Journal of Electrochemistry

In this paper, copper electrodepostion on HOPG had been in situ studied by using a homebuilt electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy (ECSTM). Three dimensional nucleation and subsequent growth of copper crystals were found as the initial stage of copper deposition on HOPG. In the case of lower overpotential or lower concentration of Cu2+ , the bulk deposited copper layer tended to form smooth terraces, and grow at the edge of steps. The terraces were stable to some extent, which made it possible to be observed with atomic resolution. At a higher overpotential, the crystal size of copper were somehow smaller. …

Macrosegregation During Dendritic Arrayed Growth Of Hypoeutectic Pb-Sn Alloys: Influence Of Primary Arm Spacing And Mushy Zone Length, Surendra N. Tewari, Rajesh Shah May 1996

Macrosegregation During Dendritic Arrayed Growth Of Hypoeutectic Pb-Sn Alloys: Influence Of Primary Arm Spacing And Mushy Zone Length, Surendra N. Tewari, Rajesh Shah

Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Thermosolutal convection in the dendritic mushy zone occurs during directional solidification of hypoeutectic lead tin alloys in a positive thermal gradient, with the melt on the top and the solid below. This results in macrosegregation along the length of the solidified samples. The extent of macrosegregation increases with increasing primary dendrite spacings for constant mushy zone length. For constant primary spacings, the macrosegregation increases with decreasing mushy zone length. Presence of convection reduces the primary dendrite spacings. However, convection in the interdendritic melt has significantly more influence on the spacings as compared with that in the overlying melt, which is …

Convection During Thermally Unstable Solidification Of Pb-Sn In A Magnetic Field, Hui Song, Surendra N. Tewari, H. C. Degroh Iii

Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Convection and macrosegregation in directionally solidified hypoeutectic Pb-38 wt pct Sn and hypereutectic Pb-64.5 wt pct Sn have been examined during upward and downward growth. Temperature fluctuations are observed along the length of the melt column during downward growth. With increasing Rayleigh number, these fluctuations change from none, to cyclic, to time periodic having multiple harmonics, and finally to random. At the higher convective driving force of 350 K temperature inversion, the transverse magnetic field decreased convective levels, strong random temperature fluctuations (flows) becoming smaller and periodic. The maximum field of 0.45 T was unable to completely eliminate convection. For …

Time Dependence Of Tip Morphology During Cellular Dendritic Arrayed Growth, Hui Song, Surendra N. Tewari Apr 1996

Time Dependence Of Tip Morphology During Cellular Dendritic Arrayed Growth, Hui Song, Surendra N. Tewari

Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Succinonitrile-1.9 wt pct acetone has been directionally solidified in 0.7 X 0.7-cm-square cross section pyrex ampoules in order to observe the cell/dendrite tip morphologies, not influenced by the ''wall effects,'' which are present during growth in the generally used thin (about 200 mu m) crucibles. The tips do not maintain a steady-state shape, as is generally assumed. Instead, they fluctuate within a shape envelope. The extent of fluctuation increases with decreasing growth speed, as the micro structure changes from the dendritic to cellular. The influence of natural convection has been examined by comparing these morphologies with those grown, without convection, …

Structural Damage Identification From Limited Measurement Data, Richard G. Cobb Mar 1996

Structural Damage Identification From Limited Measurement Data, Richard G. Cobb

Theses and Dissertations

The research focused on the development of a new method to identify damaged structural elements from a large flexible space structure on-orbit, using limited measured modal data. Limited measured modal data is loosely defined as measured data containing only a few modal frequencies and less than 10% of the total structural degrees-of-freedom. This effort was decomposed into four specific tasks. The first is the identification of partial modal properties from measured data of the nominal space structure. Second, the finite element model must be adjusted to match the measured nominal partial data. The third task is an analysis of the …

Electrochemical Ploymerization Of Aniline In The Alkaline Solution And Properties Of Polymer, Shaolin Mu, Jinqing Kan, Aiguang Zhang

Journal of Electrochemistry

A deep yellow polyaniline was formed at the anodic electrode during electrochemical oxidation of aniline in the alkaline solution. The peak of oxidation potential for aniline in the alkaline solution was 0.7 V (vs.Ag/AgCl with a saturated KCl solution), which is about 0.3V less than that in the acidic solution. The results from rotating ring-disk electrode experiment show that two soluble intermediates were generated during electrochemical oxidation of aniline. The colour of the polymer in the alkaline solution is independent of applied potential and pH values. An adsorption peak was observed in the UV region at 500 nm for the …

Journal of Electrochemistry

In this work a combination method of A.C. Impedance and chronoamperometry was used to determine the lithium ion transport number of LiClO4·(PEO)20·(PC)12·(EC)12 polymer electrolyte. It is known that lithium is thermodynamically unstable in non-aqueous or polymer electrolytes, leading to the formtion of a film on lithium surface, called as solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). The presence of SEI layer will greatly influence the experimental result of lithium ion transport number. The new method avoid the effect of SEI layer, and can give correct transport number of lithium ion in the electrolyte of DCIO4 …
