Regarding The Correlation Of Nuclear Spin Relaxation And Electrical Conductivity Relaxation In Ionic Glasses, David L. Sidebottom, Peter F. Green, Richard K. Brow

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Much attention has been focused recently on the apparent differences between ion dynamics in ion-containing glasses as probed by electrical conductivity relaxation (ECR) and by nuclear spin relaxation (NSR) techniques. In both relaxation processes, a power law frequency dependence is observed. Based upon fluctuation-dissipation arguments, the power law exponents should be equivalent. However, experimentally, it appears that the conductivity exponent is generally smaller than the NSR exponent. While an explanation for this discrepancy based upon fundamental differences in the correlation functions probed by the two techniques has been proffered, we show how this discrepancy may simply arise from differing analyses …

Microelectrode Studies On The Pitting Corrosion Process Of Stainless Steel, Changjian Lin, Lijian Chen, Ronggui Du, Zude Feng, Jianguang Tang, Hongping Dai

Journal of Electrochemistry

Differing with the scanning microelectrode techniques, which scan microelctrode closely to the interface of electrode/electrolyte and make electrochemical imaging in a lateral spatial resolution, the technique of microelectrode with a micron diameter is of very high time-resolution and ratio of signal/noise in electrochemical measurements. The microelectrode technique allows double-layer capacitance and background current for a microelectrode to be drastically reduced due to the exposed area of a microelectrode is usually 6~8 orders of magnetite lower than that of a conventional electrode with large-scale exposed area. Microelectrode was recently developed as a new powerful electrochemical technique and widely used in the …

Gold Electrodeposition On Microelectrodes, Lihua Xiong, Caihui Shi, Xiaoqin Li, Bingwei Mao Feb 1998

Gold Electrodeposition On Microelectrodes, Lihua Xiong, Caihui Shi, Xiaoqin Li, Bingwei Mao

Journal of Electrochemistry

The initial stage electrodeposition behaviors of gold onto glassy carbon and platinum microelectrodes are studied in an acid solution containing AuCl3 using cyclic voltammetry and potential step techniques. The results suggest that gold nucleation on microelectrodes requires a higher driving force with high probability. Within the range of the microelectrode dimension that have been used in the present work, large amount of gold nucleus could be formed at short time scale at overpotentials higher than a threshole value. The It curves from the platinum microelectrode are in consistence with the continuous nucleation model. It has been found that …

Journal of Electrochemistry

Two simple and efficient surface treatment methods for AB5 type hydrogen storage alloys were developed. The results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and cyclic voltammetric (CV) experiments showed that the hydrogen storage alloys treated by two different methods had Ni rich surface layer so that the performances of the electrodes were improved after treatment. The characterization of the oxide films which formed on the surface of electrodes through potentiodynamic oxidation with the help of photoelectrochemical microscopy (PEM) were done. The anodic photocurrent and the cathodic photocurrent related to the oxidation of hydrogen and the reduction of oxygen on the …

Electrochemical Impedance Of Molten Salts Induced Hot Corrosion, Chaoliu Zeng, Weitao Wu, Jianqing Zhang Feb 1998

Electrochemical Impedance Of Molten Salts Induced Hot Corrosion, Chaoliu Zeng, Weitao Wu, Jianqing Zhang

Journal of Electrochemistry

Electrochemical impedance technique was employed to study corrosion behaviors of Ni-3Al, IN100 and IN738 alloys in molten (Na, K, Li)2SO4 at 700 ℃. The Nyquist plots for Ni-3Al and IN100 alloys have the characteristics of diffusion controlled reaction. But, the corrosion reaction for IN738 alloy is not controlled by the diffusion of oxidants. The equivalent circuits were proposed, and the parameters in circuits were also calculated. Ni-3Al and IN100 alloys suffer from catastrophic corrosion due to the formation of a porous corrosion layer. IN738 alloy has excellent corrosion resistance because of the formation of a protective oxide …

Anchor Effect Of Iron And Cobalt To Platinum On Carbon Substrates, Zidong Wei, Hetong Guo, Zhiyuan Tan Feb 1998

Anchor Effect Of Iron And Cobalt To Platinum On Carbon Substrates, Zidong Wei, Hetong Guo, Zhiyuan Tan

Journal of Electrochemistry

The cathodic reduction of oxygen is studied on porous carbonbased electrodes carrying platinumiron and/or cobalt alloy catalysts. Electrodes using such electrocatalysts, particularly when used as cathodes in acidic electrolytes, remain stable for longer periods. The cathodic polarization of oxygen reduction on such electrodes is 20 mV to 40 mV lower than that on the conventional electrode on which only platinum alone is used as an electrocatalysts. An accelerated aging test (AAT) is used to evaluate the corrosion resistance and sintering resistance of each catalyst. The dissolution of the catalyst in the AAT filtrate is analysed and provides a measure of …

Study On Nano Electrode Material Of Lithium Ion Batteries, Jinkua You, Yong Yang, Dong Shu, Shenghui Wu, Yingchun Zhang, Zugeng Lin Feb 1998

Study On Nano Electrode Material Of Lithium Ion Batteries, Jinkua You, Yong Yang, Dong Shu, Shenghui Wu, Yingchun Zhang, Zugeng Lin

Journal of Electrochemistry

In this paper, the structure and morphology of the nano phase electrode materials have been characterized with XRD and TEM. The performances of electrochemical intercalation and deintercalation of lithium ions have been studied by using cyclic voltammograms and galvanostatic charge discharge techniques. The results show that the nano materials posses advantage of micro structure and Li+ ions intercalation performances. The observed high capacity and large charge discharge current density of the nano phase materials seem to have resulted from three kinds of effects: 1) an increase in the space for Li+ ions intercalation; 2) a decrease in the …

Two-Dimensional Ferroelectric Films, Alexander V. Bune, Vladimir M. Fridkin, Stephen Ducharme, Lev M. Blinov, Serguei P. Palto, Alexander V. Sorokin, S. G. Yudin, A. Zlatkin

Stephen Ducharme Publications

Ultrathin crystalline films offer the possibility of exploring phase transitions in the crossover region between two and three dimensions. Second- order ferromagnetic phase transitions have been observed in monolayer magnetic films [1,2], where surface anisotropy energy stabilizes the two-dimensional ferromagnetic state at finite temperature [3]. Similarly, a number of magnetic materials have magnetic surface layers that show a second-order ferromagnetic–paramagnetic phase transition with an increased Curie temperature [4]. Ferroelectricity is in many ways analogous to ferromagnetism, and bulk-like ferroelectricity and finite-size modifications of it have been seen in nanocrystals as small as 250 Å in diameter [5], in perovskite films …

Incommensurate Magnetic Fluctuations In Yba2⁢Cu3⁢O6.6, Pengcheng Dai, Herbert A. Mook, Fatih Dogan Feb 1998

Incommensurate Magnetic Fluctuations In Yba2⁢Cu3⁢O6.6, Pengcheng Dai, Herbert A. Mook, Fatih Dogan

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We use inelastic neutron scattering to demonstrate that the low-frequency magnetic fluctuations in YBa2Cu3O6.6 (Tc= 62.7 K) change from commensurate to incommensurate on cooling with the incommensurability first appearing at temperatures above Tc. For the energies studied, the susceptibility at incommensurate positions increases on cooling below Tc, accompanied by a suppression of the spin fluctuations at the commensurate points. These results suggest that incommensurate spin fluctuations may be a common feature for all cuprate superconductors.

Factors Affecting The Room-Temperature Mechanical Properties Of Ticr2-Base Laves Phase Alloys, Katherine C. Chen, Samuel M. Allen, James D. Livingston

Materials Engineering

Various effects on the room-temperature mechanical properties of TiCr2-base alloys have been assessed in efforts to improve the toughness of Laves phase intermetallics (AB2). Systematic studies were performed on: (i) single-phase stoichiometric and nonstoichiometric TiCr2, (ii) TiCr2-base ternary Laves phases, and (iii) two-phase binary alloys containing TiCr2. In order to make quantitative comparisons among the different alloys, Vickers indentation was used to obtain hardness and fracture toughness values. Within the single-phase field, constitutional defects accounted for the compositional dependencies of properties, and may aid the synchroshear deformation process. Ternary Laves …

Three-Dimensional Dynamic Analysis Of Wheelchair Propulsion, Mary M. Rodgers, Srinivas Tummarakota, Junghsen Lieh Feb 1998

Three-Dimensional Dynamic Analysis Of Wheelchair Propulsion, Mary M. Rodgers, Srinivas Tummarakota, Junghsen Lieh

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

A three-dimensional (3-D) inverse dynamic model of wheelchair propulsion was developed using the Newton-Euler method based on body coordinate systems. With this model, the arm was assumed to be three rigid segments (hand, forearm, and upper arm) connected by the wrist, elbow, and shoulder joints. A symbolic method was adopted to generate the equations of motion. The model was used to compute the joint forces and moments based on the inputs obtained from a 3-D motion analysis system, which included an instrumented wheelchair, video cameras, and a data acquisition system. The linear displacements of markers placed on the joints were …

The In0.75ga0.25as/In0.52al0.48as/Inp Hall Effect Magnetic Field Sensor, Oleg Mitrofanov

Theses

The magnetic field sensor is produced from III-V group semiconductor materials. The structure is designed for molecular beam epitaxy growth technique (MBE) on the semiinsulating InP substrate. The sensitive element is the In0.75Ga0.25As/In0.52Al0.48As heterostructure. The sensor uses the classic Hall effect in two-dimension electron gas (2DEG) formed at pseudomorphic strained epilayer of In0.75Ga0.25As. Properties of the 2DEG are preferential for the Hall effect sensor performance. Comparatively to bulk, electron mobility is higher. The device combines high magnetic field sensitivity and temperature stability. The sensor is designed for operation …

Low Pressure Chemical Vapor Deposition Of Boron Nitride Thin Films From Triethylamine Borane Complex And Ammonia, Narahari Ramanuja

Theses

Boron nitride thin films were synthesized on Silicon and quartz substrates by low pressure chemical vapor deposition using triethylamine-borane complex and ammonia as precursors. The films were processed at 550°C, 575°C and 600°C at a constant pressure of 0.05 Torr at different precursor flow rates and flow ratios.

Several analytical methods such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, x- ray photo-electron spectroscopy, ultra-violet/visible spectrophotornetry, ellipsometry, surface profilometry and scanning electron microscopy were used to study the deposited films. The films deposited were uniform, amorphous and the composition of the films varied with deposition temperature and precursor flow ratios. The stresses in …

Melt Hydroperoxidation Polypropylene With Potential Application In Pollution Control, Zeena Cherian

Theses

The primary objective of this study is to introduce tertiary hydroperoxide functional groups into polypropylene (PP) melt by injecting air. This was done first by mixing additive free polypropylene powder with air in a batch mixer. The influence of air flow rate, temperature, mixing time and rotor RPM on the concentration of hydroperoxide groups were studied. Iodometric analysis and fourier transform infrared spectroscopic analysis were the techniques used to detect and quantify the concentration of hydroperoxide groups. In the second phase of the study, hydroperoxide groups were introduced in polypropylene through reactive processing in a single screw extruder. It was …

Lateral Resistance Of Ring-Shank Nail Connections In Southern Pine Lumber, R D. Theilen, D A. Bender, David Pollock, S G. Winistorfer

Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering

Ring-shank nails are used in engineered structures with lateral connection design values based on theoretically derived equations which were validated only for common nails. The goal of this study was to quantify the input parameters and lateral connection strength of several types of ring-shank nails in Southern Pine lumber and critically evaluate the applicability of the theoretical equations for ring-shank nails.

Two sizes of galvanized and ungalvanized, hardened steel ring-shank nails from two manufacturers were studied. The hardened, ring-shank nails carried significantly higher loads than the common wire nails studied. Because the current method of determining yield load does not …

Dynamic Analysis Of Unidirectional Pressure Infiltration Of Porous Preforms By Pure Metals, Dhiman K. Biswas, Jorge E. Gatica, Surendra N. Tewari Jan 1998

Dynamic Analysis Of Unidirectional Pressure Infiltration Of Porous Preforms By Pure Metals, Dhiman K. Biswas, Jorge E. Gatica, Surendra N. Tewari

Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Unidirectional pressure infiltration of porous preforms by molten metals is investigated numerically. A phenomenological model to describe fluid flow and transport phenomena during infiltration of fibrous preforms by a metal is formulated. The model describes the dynamics of the infiltration process, the temperature distribution, and solid fraction distribution. The numerical results are compared against classical asymptotic analyses and experimental results. This comparison shows that end effects may become important and render asymptotic results unreliable for realistic samples. Fiber volume fraction and initial temperature appear as the factors most strongly influencing infiltration. Metal superheating affects not only the length of the …

Electrochemical Characterization Of Copper Deposited On Plasma And Thermally Modified Titanium Surfaces, K. S. Teng, J. L. Delplancke, Jiangfan Zhang, T. J. O'Keefe

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Thin oxide films were grown at temperatures from 373 to 1073 K in plasma and in air on commercially pure titanium substrates. It was determined that the color, thickness, composition, phase, and polarization behavior in a copper electrolyte varied with operating conditions: temperature, oxygen partial pressure, and plasma composition. High-temperature and high oxygen partial pressure plasma produced a thick oxide film. The surface film structure transformed from TiO2 (anatase) to TiO2 (rutile) at a temperature of 600 °C. A lower oxide of the form TinO2n-1, such as Ti2O3 (which may be porous) or possibly Ti3O5, was formed on a thermally …

Electrodeposition Of Copper On Thermally Oxidized 316 L Stainless Steel Substrates, Z. Zhou, Thomas J. O'Keefe

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The effect of thermal oxidation of 316 L stainless steel cathode blanks used in copper electrodeposition was studied. Current and potential step experiments were performed to evaluate electrochemical changes caused by the oxidation treatments. SEM and AES were used to characterize the stainless-steel substrates and the deposited copper films. Particular emphasis was given to the initial stages of copper nucleation and growth. The copper electro crystallization process was strongly influenced by the temperature employed in oxidizing the stainless steel. Dense, uniform and fine copper nuclei were obtained on the stainless-steel substrate oxidized in air at 200°C and 300°C for 3 …
