Investigating The Structure-Property Correlations Of Pyrolyzed Phenolic Resin As A Function Of Degree Of Carbonization, Ivan Gallegos, Vikas Varshney, Josh Kemppainen, Gregory Odegard

Michigan Tech Publications

Carbon-carbon (C/C) composites are attractive materials for high-speed flights and terrestrial atmospheric reentry applications due to their insulating thermal properties, thermal resistance, and high strength-to-weight ratio. It is important to understand the evolving structure-property correlations in these materials during pyrolysis, but the extreme laboratory conditions required to produce C/C composites make it difficult to quantify the properties in situ. This work presents an atomistic modeling methodology to pyrolyze a crosslinked phenolic resin network and track the evolving thermomechanical properties of the skeletal matrix during simulated pyrolysis. First, the crosslinked resin is pyrolyzed and the resulting char yield and mass density …

Validating Structural Predictions Of Conjugated Macromolecules In Espaloma-Enabled Reproducible Workflows, Madilyn E. Paul, Chris D. Jones, Eric Jankowski

Boise State University Publications and Presentations

We incorporated Espaloma forcefield parameterization into MoSDeF tools for performing molecular dynamics simulations of organic molecules with HOOMD-Blue. We compared equilibrium morphologies predicted for perylene and poly-3-hexylthiophene (P3HT) with the ESP-UA forcefield in the present work against prior work using the OPLS-UA forcefield. We found that, after resolving the chemical ambiguities in molecular topologies, ESP-UA is similar to GAFF. We observed the clustering/melting phase behavior to be similar between ESP-UA and OPLS-UA, but the base energy unit of OPLS-UA was found to better connect to experimentally measured transition temperatures. Short-range ordering measured by radial distribution functions was found to be …

Material Vulnerabilities In Aviation: A Comparative Study Of Hiduminium Rr58 In The Concorde, Siddhant Singh, Kuldeep Agarwal

Automotive and Manufacturing Engineering Technology Department Publications

The catastrophic crash of Air France Flight 4590 in the year 2000 disclosed huge flaws in the material used to manufacture the Concorde fuel tanks, Hiduminium RR58 (Aluminum 2618A). Although this alloy was selected due to its resistance to high-temperature, this research examines its thermal and mechanical vulnerabilities, especially in relation to Aluminum 7075-T3, a large-scale application of which in the Boeing 747 was widespread. By comparing tensile strength, thermal conductivity, fatigue life, and creep life, this research determines how Hiduminium RR58's over-aging susceptibility, thermal cycling degradation, and rupture due to impact were contributory causes to the disaster. The study …

Representing Structural Isomer Effects In A Coarse-Grain Model Of Poly(Ether Ketone Ketone), Chris D. Jones, Jenny W. Fothergill, Rainier Barrett, Lina N. Ghanbari, Nicholas R. Enos, Olivia Mcnair, Jeffrey Wiggins, Eric Jankowski

Boise State University Publications and Presentations

Carbon-fiber composites with thermoplastic matrices offer many processing and performance benefits in aerospace applications, but the long relaxation times of polymers make it difficult to predict how the structure of the matrix depends on its chemistry and how it was processed. Coarse-grained models of polymers can enable access to these long-time dynamics, but can have limited applicability outside the systems and state points that they are validated against. Here we develop and validate a minimal coarse-grained model of the aerospace thermoplastic poly(etherketoneketone) (PEKK). We use multistate iterative Boltzmann inversion to learn potentials with transferability across thermodynamic states relevant to PEKK …

Synthesis And Application Of Cu-Based Ultrasmall Nanoparticles For Targeted Glioblastoma Treatment, Ryan T. Hart Jan 2025

Synthesis And Application Of Cu-Based Ultrasmall Nanoparticles For Targeted Glioblastoma Treatment, Ryan T. Hart

Material Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Glioblastoma (GBM) is a highly malignant form of brain cancer with a bleak prognosis. Current maximal treatment involves surgical resection followed by chemo-or radiotherapy. Two critical barriers make treating GBM a formidable challenge. First, the tumor's tendril-like proliferation throughout healthy brain tissue often makes complete surgical removal and conventional radiation insufficient. Second, the blood-brain barrier (BBB), which protects the brain, unfortunately also shields GBM from life-saving anti-cancer drugs. Here, we develop a radioactive nanoparticle-based therapy that directly confronts these limitations, offering a new strategy for GBM treatment.

Prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) is a promising target for glioblastoma (GBM) treatment because …

Phase-Field Modeling Of A Protective Layer For The Suppression Of Dendrites In Metallic Anode-Based Rechargeable Batteries, Bharat R. Pant

Material Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Metallic anodes, such as Lithium (Li) and Zinc (Zn), offer promise for the development of high-capacity rechargeable batteries. However, metallic anode-based batteries suffer from severe dendrite growth during the plating process, which poses safety hazards and accelerates capacity degradation. Experimental studies suggest that using a protective coating on the anode surface could potentially mitigate dendrite growth and prolong the battery’s life. However, there are limited theoretical studies on the inhibition effect of a protective layer on dendrite growth. Herein, we developed a phase-field model to simulate the impact of a protective layer on the plating and stripping cycle for Li …

Fabrication Of Microscale Oxide Architectures On Silicon Via A Cmos-Compatible, Deposition-Last Process, Jamal A. Brown

Material Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

This work explores the feasibility of integrating complex oxide devices on silicon using a CMOS-compatible, deposition-last approach. While previous demonstrations of this method have succeeded at larger scales, this study focuses on extending the process to microscale features, with lateral dimensions as small as two microns. The fabrication sequence begins with photolithographic patterning and reactive ion etching of the silicon substrate, followed by the deposition of a silicon nitride mask to delineate device regions. We then epitaxially grew SrTiO3 and La-doped SrTiO3 layers on top of the nitride mask via molecular beam epitaxy. Electrical transport measurements of the La:STO layer …

Engineered Biomimetic Muscle Graft For Skeletal Muscle Regeneration, Julia O. Aguirre

Bioengineering Theses - Archive

This study aims to develop a synthetic muscle graft that closely mimics the architecture, viscoelastic properties, and bio-signaling characteristics of natural skeletal muscle. By analyzing the native skeletal muscle microstructure, biochemical, and mechanical properties, we establish design parameters for a biomimetic scaffold. The engineered graft integrates tunable mechanical compliance, aligned microarchitecture, and signaling cues to promote cell recruitment, adhesion, proliferation, and maturation. To further enhance biofunctionality, an electrically conductive polymer was incorporated to improve the electrical conductivity, and the graft was loaded with the bioactive lipid signaling mediator “Prostaglandin E2” (PGE2) to support myogenesis during muscle regeneration. The grafts were …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

Polymers have widespread usage in most industries, such as aerospace, automotive, telecommunications, and medicine, mainly because they have a positive lightweight nature and excellent mechanical properties. One significant advantage of polymeric materials is their ability to combine nano-fillers, greatly enhancing their mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties. In the category of polymer matrices, polypropylene (PP) is notable for its low cost, ease of processing, and balanced mechanical properties. However, its relatively lower modulus and strength limit their applications in high-performance engineering. This research explores the addition of graphene into polypropylene to improve its mechanical properties and establish a conductive network for …

Reducing Friction In Machine Oil Via Cesium-Hybridized Graphene Oxide Quantum Dot Additives, Islam Gomaa, Sherief Elsoudy, Maryam Galal, Ahmed Azim

Nanotechnology Research Centre

Friction and wear are among the most common causes of energy loss and component failure in mechanical systems, accounting for around 20–30% of total global energy consumption. Conventional lubricants fail to provide consistent performance in harsh conditions due to inadequate additive dispersion, agglomeration, and restricted surface reactivity. Recent advances in nanomaterial-based lubricants have shown promise, but it remains difficult to achieve significant friction and wear reduction at low additive concentrations while preserving stability. In this study, we synthesized and tested cesium-hybridized graphene oxide quantum dots (Cs-GOQDs) as novel lubricant additives. When incorporated into machine oil at 0.1 wt%, Cs-GOQDs reduced …

Multi-Scale Computational Mechanical Modeling Of Complex Multi-Phase Materials Systems, Naji Al-Mashrafi Jan 2025

Multi-Scale Computational Mechanical Modeling Of Complex Multi-Phase Materials Systems, Naji Al-Mashrafi

Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering

This thesis employs finite-element–based computational methods to investigate how microstructural features and material heterogeneity govern mechanical behavior across three distinct complex systems. First, the elastic response of open-cell metallic foams is analyzed using large ensembles of model RVEs generated with the Kentucky Random Structures Toolkit (KRaSTk); finite-element homogenization reveals that effective stiffness is not dictated by relative density alone, as the skewness of ligament-length distributions—captured by the second Pearson’s coefficient—exerts a strong and previously unrecognized influence, with structures enriched in short load-bearing ligaments exhibiting consistently higher stiffness even at fixed density and connectivity. The second study examines heterogeneous polycrystalline solids …

Selective Surface Activation And Flotation Of Pyrite For The Recovery Of Tellurium From Sulfide Tailings, Mulenga Mutema Chibesa

Masters Theses

Copper sulfide tailings from past and present mining operations are important secondary sources of critical elements such as tellurium (Te), a key component in cadmium–telluride photovoltaic solar cells. Characterization of tailing streams from copper porphyry (CP) ore flotation revealed that Te-bearing minerals are predominantly hosted in pyrite, which is usually depressed and discarded. Enhancing pyrite recovery is therefore a critical first step toward concentrating Te minerals for downstream extraction. However, pyrite flotation is often hindered by hydrophilic surface complexes formed during prior processing. This research investigated selective flotation of Te-bearing pyrite from CP tailings using micro flotation and bench-scale flotation, …

Phase-Field Modeling Of Rapid Solidification Processes, Nima Najafizadeh Jan 2025

Phase-Field Modeling Of Rapid Solidification Processes, Nima Najafizadeh

Doctoral Dissertations

"Many advanced manufacturing processes such as additive manufacturing utilize rapid solidification of alloys, as it enables the formation of exotic non-equilibrium microstructure and thus improved properties. However, the interrelationship between the processing parameters and the resulting microstructure in rapid solidification is yet to be fully understood. We aim to investigate the microstructure evolutions during the rapid solidifications using phase-field modeling. The phase-field method assumes a diffuse interface, which avoids tracking the moving interface and hence enables efficient numerical simulations for complex microstructure evolution. A phase-field model with coupled solute-thermal diffusion and solute trapping effect is developed to investigate the rapid …

A Fault-Tolerant Exchange-Coupled Spin-Ensemble Qubit At Elevated-Temperatures, Aniruddha Chakraborty

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis introduces a novel qubit architecture: the ferromagnetic exchange-coupled spin ensemble qubit (E-qubit), designed to address the noise-induced instability. In this work, the time evolution of the ensemble’s density matrix is studied using the Liouville–von Neumann equation. To benchmark against a single-spin qubit, the gate fidelity of an E-qubit is computed in the presence of thermal noise. Coherence time is also analyzed under identical thermal condition and a linear scaling is observed with qubit size . The results show that, at 6 K , the gate fidelity error (0.7 % ) of the seven- spin ensemble is an order …

This study explores additive manufacturing of carbon fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composites using the Composite-Based Additive Manufacturing (CBAM) process. Carbon/Nylon 12 and Carbon/PEEK composites were fabricated and evaluated through mechanical (compression, tensile, flexural, and impact) and thermal (DSC and TGA) tests. Carbon/PEEK exhibited superior mechanical performance, with 97.5% higher tensile strength, 79.8% higher elastic modulus, and 59.6% higher flexural strength compared to Carbon/Nylon 12. Thermal testing showed that Carbon/PEEK had higher thermal stability, beginning degradation at 350 °C versus 298 °C for Carbon/Nylon. These results indicate that CBAM-fabricated Carbon/PEEK composites are suitable for applications requiring high strength and temperature resistance.

Mitigating Out-Of-Plane Fiber Waviness In Afp Laminates With Tow-Gaps Via Selective Placement Of Thermoplastic Veils, Ahmadreza Ravangard, Kuthan Celebi, Sergii G. Kravchenko, Oleksandr G. Kravchenko

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Fiber tow-gaps and overlaps formed during the Automated Fiber Placement (AFP) process pose a significant challenge by introducing non-uniform composite morphologies, often characterized by resin-rich regions and fiber waviness. These defects occur as deposited fibers sink into the gap regions during consolidation, with gap geometry determined during path planning. Such morphological inconsistencies can compromise structural reliability by initiating premature failure, particularly through localized out-of-plane waviness and resin accumulation. This study investigates the integration of high melting temperature thermoplastic veils, specifically polyetherimide (PEI), into fiber tow-gaps as a method to prevent ply sinking and reduce fiber waviness on both internal and …
