Plasma Levels Of Polychlorinated Biphenyls, Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, And Causation, Michael D. Freeman, Sean S. Kohles

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are synthetic chlorinated hydrocarbons that have extensively polluted the environment and bioaccumulated in the food chain. PCBs have been deemed to be probable carcinogens by the Environmental Protection Agency, and exposure to high levels of PCBs has been consistently linked to increased risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). In the present article we present a forensic epidemiologic evaluation of the causal relationship between NHL and elevated PCB levels via application of the Bradford-Hill criteria. Included in the evaluation is a meta-analysis of the results of previously published case-control studies in order to assess the strength of association between …

Ultrasonic Wave Propagation Assessment Of Native Cartilage Explants And Hydrogel Scaffolds For Tissue Engineering, Sean S. Kohles, Shelley S. Mason, Anya P. Adams, Robert J. Berg, Jessica Blank, Fay Gibson, Johnathan Righetti, Lesha S. Washington, Asit K. Saha

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Non-destructive techniques characterising the mechanical properties of cells, tissues, and biomaterials provide baseline metrics for tissue engineering design. Ultrasonic wave propagation and attenuation has previously demonstrated the dynamics of extracellular matrix synthesis in chondrocyte-seeded hydrogel constructs. In this paper, we describe an ultrasonic method to analyse two of the construct elements used to engineer articular cartilage in real-time, native cartilage explants and an agarose biomaterial. Results indicated a similarity in wave propagation velocity ranges for both longitudinal (1500-1745 m/s) and transverse (350-950 m/s) waveforms. Future work will apply an acoustoelastic analysis to distinguish between the fluid and solid properties including …

Technical Feasibility Of Storage On Large Dish Stirling Systems, Charles E. Andraka, K Scott Rawlinson, Nathan P. Siegel Jan 2012

Technical Feasibility Of Storage On Large Dish Stirling Systems, Charles E. Andraka, K Scott Rawlinson, Nathan P. Siegel

Faculty Journal Articles

Dish-Stirling systems have been demonstrated to provide high-efficiency solar-only electrical generation, holding the world record at 31.25%. This high efficiency results in a system with a high possibility of meeting the DOE SunShot goal of $0.06/kWh. Current dish-Stirling systems do not incorporate thermal storage. For the next generation of non-intermittent and cost-competitive solar power plants, we propose a thermal energy storage system that combines latent (phase-change) energy transport and latent energy storage in order to match the isothermal input requirements of Stirling engines while also maximizing the exergetic efficiency of the entire system. This report takes an initial look at …

Surface integrity of manufactured components has a critical impact on their functional performance. Magnesium alloys are lightweight materials used in the transportation industry and are also emerging as a potential material for biodegradable medical implants. However, the unsatisfactory corrosion performance of Mg alloys limits their application to a great extent. Surface integrity factors, such as grain size, crystallographic orientation and residual stress, have been proved to remarkably influence the functional performance of magnesium alloys, including corrosion resistance, wear resistance and fatigue life.

In this dissertation, the influence of machining conditions, including dry and cryogenic cooling (liquid nitrogen was sprayed to …

Structure And Properties Of Polymer-Derived Sibcn Ceramics, Yaohan Chen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Polymer-derived ceramics (PDCs) are a unique class of multifunctional materials synthesized by thermal decomposition of polymeric precursors. Due to their unique and excellent properties and flexible manufacturing capability, PDC is a promising technology to prepare ceramic fibers, coatings, composites and micro-sensors for high-temperature applications. However, the structure-property relationships of PDCs have not been well understood. The lack of such understandings drastically limited the further developments and applications of the materials. In this dissertation, the structure and properties of amorphous polymer-derived silicon carbonitride (SiCN) and silicoboron carbonitride (SiBCN) have been studied. The SiCN was obtained using commercially available polysilazane as pre-ceramic …

Optimization Of Process Parameters For Faster Deposition Of Cuin1-Xgaxs2 And Cuin1-Xgaxse2-Ysy Thin Film Solar Cells, Ashwani Kaul

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Thin film solar cells have the potential to be an important contributor to the world energy demand in the 21st century. Among all the thin film technologies, CuInGaSe2 (CIGS) thin film solar cells have achieved the highest efficiency. However, the high price of photovoltaic (PV) modules has been a major factor impeding their growth for terrestrial applications. Reduction in cost of PV modules can be realized by several ways including choosing scalable processes amenable to large area deposition, reduction in the materials consumption of active layers, and attaining faster deposition rates suitable for in-line processing. Selenization-sulfurization of sputtered metallic Cu-In-Ga …

Effects Of Allotropic Transformations On Interdiffusion Behavior In Binary Systems, Ashley Elizabeth Ewh Jan 2012

Effects Of Allotropic Transformations On Interdiffusion Behavior In Binary Systems, Ashley Elizabeth Ewh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Diffusion plays a significant role in most materials systems by controlling microstructural development. Consequently, the overall properties of a material can be largely dependent upon diffusion. This study investigated the interdiffusion behavior of three binary systems, namely, Mo-Zr, Fe-Mo, and Fe-Zr. The main interest in these particular metals is for application in nuclear fuel assemblies. Nuclear fuel plates generally consist of two main components which are the fuel and the cladding. Due to diffusional interactions that can occur between these two components, a third is sometimes added between the fuel and cladding to serve as a diffusion barrier layer. Fe, …

Thermally Annealled Plasmonic Nanostructures, Chaoming Wang Jan 2012

Thermally Annealled Plasmonic Nanostructures, Chaoming Wang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) is induced in metal nanoparticles by resonance between incident photons and conduction electrons in nanoparticles. For noble metal nanoparticles, LSPR can lead to strong absorbance of ultraviolet-violet light. Although it is well known that LSPR depends on the size and shape of nanoparticles, the inter-particle spacing, the dielectric properties of metal and the surrounding medium, the temperature dependence of LSPR is not well understood. By thermally annealing gold nanoparticle arrays formed by nanosphere lithography, a shift of LSPR peak upon heating has been shown. The thermal characteristics of the plasmonic nanoparticles have been further used …

Effect Of Additive Morphology & Chemistry On Wear & Friction Of Greases Under Spectrum Loading, Sujay Dilip Bagi Jan 2012

Effect Of Additive Morphology & Chemistry On Wear & Friction Of Greases Under Spectrum Loading, Sujay Dilip Bagi

Material Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

The primary focus of grease development is to minimize friction and improve on wear and load bearing capacity. Traditional method to evaluate wear behavior of grease is based on ASTM D2266 which evaluates the performance of grease at 75°C, 40Kg and 1200 rpm for 1 hour. However, actual applications may require bearings to be subjected to spectrum loading conditions where-in rotations per minute (rpm), load and duration of test are variables. A series of six tests were conducted for all the grease blends; load was treated as the variable in four of the tests while maintaining the frequency constant and …

Capillary-Mediated Dendritic Branching, Martin E. Glicksman Jan 2012

Capillary-Mediated Dendritic Branching, Martin E. Glicksman

Mechanical and Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

We consider the Gibbs-Thomson temperature distribution as an active interface energy field with gradients and fluxes. Capillarity in conventional dendritic growth theories acts only as a passive boundary condition on the transport field that conducts latent heat into the melt to drive the solidification. Instead, we find the vector divergence of capillary-mediated interface fluxes autonomously releases or withdraws energy along a curved solid-liquid interface. Local energy conservation (a Stefan balance) shows that capillary-mediated energy slightly retards, or enhances, the local freezing rate. At special points near the tip where the capillary-mediated energy release changes sign, the surface Laplacian of the …

Cerium-Based Conversion Coatings On Cast Aluminum 380 And 413 Alloys, Ci Lin

Masters Theses

"This investigation focused on the deposition and characterization of cerium-based conversion coatings (CeCCs) on cast aluminum alloys. Previous research has shown that CeCCs are viable alternatives to chromate conversion on high strength alloys such as 2024-T3 and 7075-T6. For the casting alloys such as 380 and 413, the presence of Si affects the composition and stability of the native oxide, which means that pretreatment plays an important role for the coating deposition. This thesis consists of two papers that describe the results of the study.

The first paper reports the effect of the final rinsing temperature before coating deposition on …

The Quantification Of The Fly Ash Adsorption Capacity For The Purpose Of Characterization And Use In Concrete, Zeyad Tareq Ahmed Jan 2012

The Quantification Of The Fly Ash Adsorption Capacity For The Purpose Of Characterization And Use In Concrete, Zeyad Tareq Ahmed

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Fly ash has been shown to be an effective replacement for portland cement in concrete mixtures. However, many fly ash materials contain unburned carbon from the combustion process. Unburned carbon in fly ash adsorbs air entraining admixtures (AEAs) reducing their effectiveness in providing a specified air void system in concrete materials. Measurement tools and methods for characterization of the adsorption properties of fly ash materials are necessary for beneficial use of fly ash materials in concrete. In this research, two methods were developed to measure and quantify the adsorption capacity AEAs on fly ash materials. The first method is the …

Extreme Strain Localization And Sliding Friction In Physically Associating Polymer Gels, Kendra Erk, Jeffrey D. Martin, Y. Thomas Hu, Kenneth R. Shull Jan 2012

Extreme Strain Localization And Sliding Friction In Physically Associating Polymer Gels, Kendra Erk, Jeffrey D. Martin, Y. Thomas Hu, Kenneth R. Shull

School of Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Model physically associating gels deformed in shear over a wide range of reduced rates displayed evidence of strain localization. The non-linear stress responses and inhomogeneous velocity profiles observed during shear rheometry coupled with particle tracking velocimetry were associated with the occurrence of rate-dependent, banding and fracture-like responses in the gel. Scaling law analysis from traditional sliding friction studies suggests that at the molecular level, deformation is confined to a shear zone with thickness comparable to the gel’s mesh size, the smallest structurally relevant length scale in the gel.

Shear And Dilational Interfacial Rheology Of Surfactant-Stabilized Droplets, Kendra Erk, Jeffrey D. Martin, Jonathan T. Schwalbe, Frederick R. Phelan Jr., Steven D. Hudson Jan 2012

Shear And Dilational Interfacial Rheology Of Surfactant-Stabilized Droplets, Kendra Erk, Jeffrey D. Martin, Jonathan T. Schwalbe, Frederick R. Phelan Jr., Steven D. Hudson

School of Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

A new measurement method is suggested that is capable of probing the shear and dilational interfacial rheological responses of small droplets, those of size comparable to real emulsion applications. Freely suspended aqueous droplets containing surfactant and non-surface-active tracer particles are transported through a rectangular microchannel by the plane Poiseuille flow of the continuous oil phase. Optical microscopy and high-speed imaging record the shape and internal circulation dynamics of the droplets. Measured circulation velocities are coupled with theoretical descriptions of the droplet dynamics in order to determine the viscous (Boussinesq) and elastic (Marangoni) interfacial effects. A new Marangoni-induced stagnation point is …

Ferroelectric Control Of Magnetocrystalline Anisotropy At Cobalt/Poly(Vinylidene Fluoride) Interfaces, Pavel Lukashev, Tula R. Paudel, Juan M. López-Encarnación, Shireen Adenwalla, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal, Julian P. Velev Jan 2012

Ferroelectric Control Of Magnetocrystalline Anisotropy At Cobalt/Poly(Vinylidene Fluoride) Interfaces, Pavel Lukashev, Tula R. Paudel, Juan M. López-Encarnación, Shireen Adenwalla, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal, Julian P. Velev

Shireen Adenwalla Papers

Electric field control of magnetization is one of the promising avenues for achieving high-density energy-efficient magnetic data storage. Ferroelectric materials can be especially useful for that purpose as a source of very large switchable electric fields when interfaced with a ferromagnet. Organic ferroelectrics, such as poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), have an additional advantage of being weakly bonded to the ferromagnet, thus minimizing undesirable effects such as interface chemical modification and/or strain coupling. In this work we use first-principles density functional calculations of Co/PVDF heterostructures to demonstrate the effect of ferroelectric polarization of PVDF on the interface magnetocrystalline anisotropy that controls the …

Novel Design Of Functionalized Carbon Nanotube Electrodes And Membranes For Fuel Cells And Energy Storage, Xin Su Jan 2012

Novel Design Of Functionalized Carbon Nanotube Electrodes And Membranes For Fuel Cells And Energy Storage, Xin Su

Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering

A novel electrochemical method to generate nm-scale bubbles at the tips of CNTs can temporarily block the membrane. A 92% blocking efficiency is achieved when the bubbles are stabilized in 30-60 nm diameter „wells‟ at the tips of CNTs. This well is formed by the electrochemical oxidation of the conductive CNTs partially into the polymer matrix of the membrane. Meanwhile, the nanoscale bubbles can be removed with 0.004 atm pressure to recover the transport through the CNT membrane. The CNT membrane with nanoscale bubble valve system was used to demonstrate electrochemical energy storage.

Uniform ultrathin Pt films were electrodeposited onto …

Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering

Study on nanoparticle additives in multiphase systems (liquid, polymer) are of immense interest in developing new product applications. Critical challenges for nanoparticle additives include their synthesis, formulation and characterization. These challenges are addressed in three application areas: nanofluids for engine lubrication, ultrathin nanocomposites for optical devices, and nanoparticle size distribution characterization.

Nanoparticle additives in oligomer mixtures can be used to develop extended temperature range motor oils. A model system includes poly(α-olefin) based oligomers with a modest fraction of poly(dimethylsiloxane) oligomers along with graphite as nanoparticle additive. Partition coefficients of each oligomer are determined since the oligomer mixture phase separated at …

Understanding Degradation And Lithium Diffusion In Lithium Ion Battery Electrodes, Juchuan Li Jan 2012

Understanding Degradation And Lithium Diffusion In Lithium Ion Battery Electrodes, Juchuan Li

Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering

Lithium-ion batteries with higher capacity and longer cycle life than that available today are required as secondary energy sources for a wide range of emerging applications. In particular, the cycling performance of several candidate materials for lithium-ion battery electrodes is insufficient because of the fast capacity fading and short cycle life, which is mainly a result of mechanical degradation.

This dissertation mainly focuses on the issue of mechanical degradation in advanced lithium-ion battery electrodes. Thin films of tin electrodes were studied where we observed whisker growth as a result of electrochemical cycling. These whiskers bring safety concerns because they may …

Finite Element Analysis Of The Contact Deformation Of Piezoelectric Materials, Ming Liu

Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering

Piezoelectric materials in the forms of both bulk and thin-film have been widely used as actuators and sensors due to their electromechanical coupling. The characterization of piezoelectric materials plays an important role in determining device performance and reliability. Instrumented indentation is a promising method for probing mechanical as well as electrical properties of piezoelectric materials.

The use of instrumented indentation to characterize the properties of piezoelectric materials requires analytical relations. Finite element methods are used to analyze the indentation of piezoelectric materials under different mechanical and electrical boundary conditions.

For indentation of a piezoelectric half space, a three-dimensional finite element …

High Pressure Synchrotron X-Ray Diffraction Studies Of Superprotonic Transitions In Phosphate Based Solid Acids, Juan Daniel Hermosillo

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Certain phosphate based solid acids, such as CsH2PO4 and RbH2PO4, have been shown to exhibit an abrupt, several-order-of-magnitude increase in their proton conductivity when heated above a temperature threshold. This so called superprotonic behavior allows the above-mentioned materials to function as fuel cell electrolytes at temperatures between 150C and 300C, a remarkable application that attracted significant interest especially from the automobile industry. Yet, the microscopic structures and dynamic mechanisms responsible for this behavior are not fully understood. In fact, until very recently, the very nature of the superprotonic behavior has been debate, with some groups attributing the steep proton enhancement …

Thin Film Growths Of Znte And Cdte On Various Substrates Using A Novel Close Space Sublimation Reactor Css4, Damian Marrufo

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Thin films of CdTe have been grown on CdS in a variety of methods for use in thin film photovoltaic systems. Limits to the efficiency of CdTe/CdS solar cells have been attributed to defects in the lattice that occur between the interface of CdS and CdTe due to a lattice mismatch. A close space sublimation (CSS) reactor known as the CSS4 was designed and fabricated in UTEP to deposit complex layers of CdTe and ZnTe on top of a CdS film that is grown via chemical bath deposition in order to obtain a CdTe photovoltaic. Unfortunately, the original design and …

Oxidation Of Borides And Carbides With Y2o3 And Ta Additions, Salvador Manuel Rodriguez Jan 2012

Oxidation Of Borides And Carbides With Y2o3 And Ta Additions, Salvador Manuel Rodriguez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The study presented here describes an investigation of an oxidation scale of a fully-sintered Y2O3-ZrB2-TiC composite exposed in air at 1173K. Upon oxidation of the boride/carbide, a ZrO2-TiO2 was expected to form similar to the ZrO2-SiO2 dual scale of an oxidized ZrB2-SiC. The 47wt% Y2O3-38wt%ZrB2-16wt%TiC composite formed a dual scale consisting primarily of an Y2O3-ZrO2-TiC inner scale with an outer scale of ZrO2-TiO2-Y2O3.

The samples oxidized with a parabolic layer growth allowing the calculation of the effective diffusion coefficient indicating that the oxidation was controlled by oxygen ingress through primarily the ZrO2-Y2O3 phase. The oxygen potential between the inner layer …

The Effects Of Uncommon Silicides On The Oxidation Of Alloys From The Nb-Cr-Si System, Daniel Brendan Voglewede Jan 2012

The Effects Of Uncommon Silicides On The Oxidation Of Alloys From The Nb-Cr-Si System, Daniel Brendan Voglewede

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Niobium based alloys are being tapped as potential successors to current nickel base superalloys in high temperature applications. In the aerospace industry, high temperature materials are constantly being pushed to higher temperature regimes in order to improve engine efficiency however current superalloys cannot be pushed further due to melting temperature limitations. Niobium, being a refractory metal, can withstand much higher temperatures than nickel however its oxidation properties are woefully inadequate.

The purpose of this study is to ascertain whether increased silicon additions can improve niobium oxidation properties by: forming ternary silicides with better oxidation properties and by preventing the formation …
