An Uncooled Mid-Wave Infrared Detector Based On Optical Response Of Laser-Doped Silicon Carbide., Geunsik Lim
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on an uncooled Mid-Wave Infra-Red (MWIR) detector was developed by doping an n-type 4H-SiC with Ga using the laser doping technique. 4H-SiC is one of the polytypes of crystalline silicon carbide, a wide bandgap semiconductor. The dopant creates an energy level of 0.30 eV, which was confirmed by optical spectroscopy of the doped sample. This energy level corresponds to the MWIR wavelength of 4.21 µm. The detection mechanism is based on the photoexcitation of electrons by the photons of this wavelength absorbed in the semiconductor. This process modifies the electron density, which changes the refraction index and, …
Using Acoustic Emission Monitoring For Energy-Based Fatigue Life Prediction, Sepehr Nesaei
Using Acoustic Emission Monitoring For Energy-Based Fatigue Life Prediction, Sepehr Nesaei
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The study of fatigue and fracture mechanics is crucial to the health monitoring and overall safety of aerospace and civil structures. The materials used to manufacture these industry parts have inherent anomalies that eventually grow under cyclic loadings during regular operation. The ASTM and/or military testing guidelines used to analyze and qualify structures and materials for use are costly and time consuming. Therefore, any additional methods or knowledge that can be used to reduce the number of tests will be useful to the industry to avoid unnecessary costs. Acoustic emission (AE) monitoring is currently used in many applications to assess …

Optical Properties Of Carbon Microcoils, Muneaki Hikita, Li Cao, Khalid Lafdi
Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications
Carbon microcoils (CMCs) have emerged as versatile material artifacts for a variety of applications due to their helical and spiral structures. Embedded in matrix, CMCs have already been demonstrated for their potential tactile/proximity sensor application. In this study, CMCs were prepared using a conventional chemical vapor deposition method, and then were functionalized with octadecylamine.
Upon photoexcitation, the functionalized CMCs exhibited photoluminescence in the visible region, which has never been found before. Similar to carbon based nanoparticles, the photoluminescence of CMCs was attributed to electron-hole radiative recombination after surface passivation. The results suggested that this kind of fluorescent functionalized CMCs might …

Influence Of Dissolved Hydrogen On The Fatigue Crack Growth Behaviour Of Aisi 4140 Steel, Varun Ramasagara Nagarajan
Wayne State University Dissertations
Many metallic structural components come into contact with hydrogen during manufacturing processes or forming operations such as hot stamping of auto body frames and while in service. This interaction of metallic parts with hydrogen can occur due to various reasons such as water molecule dissociation during plating operations, interaction with atmospheric hydrogen due to the moisture present in air during stamping operations or due to prevailing conditions in service (e.g.: acidic or marine environments). Hydrogen, being much smaller in size compared to other metallic elements such as Iron in steels, can enter the material and become dissolved in the matrix. …

Fatigue Life Prediction Of Magnetorheological Elastomers Subjected To Dynamic Equi-Biaxial Cyclic Loadin, Yanfen Zhou, Stephen Jerrams, Tony Betts, Lin Chen
Articles
Prediction of fatigue life is of great significance in ensuring that dynamically loaded rubber components exhibit safety and reliability in service. In this text, the dynamic equi-biaxial fatigue behaviour of magnetorheological elastomer (MREs) using a bubble inflation method is described. Wöhler (S-N) curves for both isotropic and anisotropic MREs were produced by subjecting the compounds to cycling over a range of stress amplitudes (σa) between 0.75 MPa and 1.4 MPa. Changes in physical properties, including variation in stress-strain relations and complex modulus (E*) during the fatigue process were analysed. It was found that the complex modulus of MRE …

Investigating Quantum Oscillations In The Thermal Coefficient Of Resistivity Of Ultra-Thin Ag Capping Layers On Cu For Ic Interconnect Applications, Elroy Tatem
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
As the semiconductor industry continues to scale feature sizes, scattering from phonons, surfaces, and grain boundaries result in an increase of metal interconnect resistivity in state-of-the-art integrated circuits (ICs). The interconnect chapter of the 2011 International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors (ITRS) stated that there are currently no manufacturable solutions in the near term for suitable Cu replacements. Previous studies of thin Ag films deposited on Cu demonstrated oscillations in the electron-phonon interactions within the bilayer system. This thesis investigates oscillations in the resistive properties of the Ag/Cu bilayer system and discusses the applicability of these oscillations to the resistivity challenges …

Nanostructured Tiox As A Catalyst Support Material For Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells, Richard Phillips
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Recent interest in the development of new catalyst support materials for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) has stimulated research into the viability of TiO2-based support structures. Specifically, substoichiometric TiO2 (TiOx) has been reported to exhibit a combination of high conductivity, stability, and corrosion resistance. These properties make TiOx-based support materials a promising prospect when considering the inferior corrosion resistance of traditional carbon-based supports. This document presents an investigation into the formation of conductive and stable TiOx thin films employing atomic layer deposition (ALD) and a post deposition oxygen reducing anneal (PDORA). …

Metal Oxide Growth, Spin Precession Measurements And Raman Spectroscopy Of Cvd Graphene, Akitomo Matsubayashi
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The focus of this dissertation is to explore the possibility of wafer scale graphene-based spintronics. Graphene is a single atomic layer of sp2 bonded carbon atoms that has attracted much attention as a new type of electronic material due to its high carrier mobilities, superior mechanical properties and extremely high thermal conductivity. In addition, it has become an attractive material for use in spintronic devices owing to its long electron spin relaxation time at room temperature. This arises in part from its low spin-orbit coupling and negligible nuclear hyperfine interaction. In order to realize wafer scale graphene spintronics, utilization of …

Growth And Characterization Of Graphene On Cuni Substrates, Parul Tyagi
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Graphene is a single layer of sp2 bonded carbon atoms that crystallizes in the honeycomb structure. Because of its true two-dimensional structure, it has very unique electrical properties, including a very high carrier mobility that is symmetric for holes and electrons. To realize these unique properties, it is important to develop a method for growing graphene films with uniform thickness and low defect density. One of the most popular methods of growth is by chemical vapor deposition on Cu substrates, because it is self-limited. However many applications require the growth of graphene films that are more than one atomic layer …

Oxide Defect Engineering Methods For Valence Change (Vcm) Resistive Random Access Memories, Jihan Ocampo Capulong
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Electrical switching requirements for resistive random access memory (ReRAM) devices are multifaceted, based on device application. Thus, it is important to obtain an understanding of these switching properties and how they relate to the oxygen vacancy concentration and oxygen vacancy defects. Oxygen vacancy defects in the switching oxide of valence-change-based ReRAM (VCM ReRAM) play a significant role in device switching properties. Oxygen vacancies facilitate resistive switching as they form the conductive filament that changes the resistance state of the device. This dissertation will present two methods of modulating the defect concentration in VCM ReRAM composed of Pt/HfOx/Ti stack: …
The Influence Of Impurities And Metallic Capping Layers On The Microstructure Of Copper Interconnects, Michael Rizzolo
The Influence Of Impurities And Metallic Capping Layers On The Microstructure Of Copper Interconnects, Michael Rizzolo
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
As copper interconnects have scaled to ever smaller dimensions on semiconductor devices, the microstructure has become increasingly detrimental for performance and reliability. Small grains persist in interconnects despite annealing at high temperatures, leading to higher line resistance and more frequent electromigration-induced failures. Conventionally, it was believed that impurities from the electrodeposition pinned grain growth, but limitations in analytical techniques meant the effect was inferred rather than observed.

Experimental And Simulation Studies Of Printability Of Buried Euv Mask Defects And Study Of Euv Reflectivity Loss Mechanisms Due To Standard Euv Mask Cleaning Processes, Mihirkant Upadhyaya
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
There's a big push for development and commercialization of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography for high-volume semiconductor manufacturing of 14 nm half-pitch patterning and beyond. One of the primary concerns for making this a reality has been the ability to achieve defect-free masks. My study is focused on two aspects related to the performance degradation of the EUV masks namely EUV mask cleaning induced reflectivity loss mechanisms, and the buried multilayer phase defects in EUV masks.

The phase diagram of a quantum paraelectric antiferromagnet EuTiO33 under an external electric field is calculated using Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire theory. The application of an electric field E in the absence of strain leads to the appearance of a ferromagnetic (FM) phase due to the magnetoelectric (ME) coupling. At an electric field greater than a critical field, Ecr, the antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase disappears for all considered temperatures, and FM becomes the only stable magnetic phase. The calculated value of the critical field is close to the values reported recently by Ryan et al. [Nat. Commun. 4, 1334 (2013)10.1038/ncomms2329] …

We present the results of repeated relaxation tests using nanoindentation to derive the activation volume of the dislocation velocity and the ratios of the dislocation density and dislocation velocity. An experimental technique, based on classical uniaxial relaxation experiments, was developed to establish a constant strain during repeated load relaxation transients and then to calculate the stiffness of unloading, and therefore the hardness, across the transients with acceptable results. We found that the activation volume of the dislocation velocity from our nanoindentation methodology was in good agreement when compared to the same reported for uniaxial experiments. © 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

Physical vapor deposited two-dimensional (2D) materials span larger areas compared to exfoliated flakes, but suffer from very small grain or domain sizes. In this letter, we fabricate freestanding molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) and amorphous boron nitride (BN) specimens to expose both surfaces. We performed in situ heating in a transmission electron microscope to observe the domain restructuring in real time. The freestanding MoS2 specimens showed up to 100× increase in domain size, while the amorphous BN transformed in to polycrystalline hexagonal BN (h-BN) at temperatures around 600 °C much lower than the 850–1000 °C range cited in the literature.

In the electroplating process, dissolved metal cations are reduced by electrical current to a form a coherent metal coating on an electrode. Therefore, electroplating is primarily applied to modify the surface properties of an object (e.g. abrasion and wear resistance, corrosion protection, lubricity, aesthetic qualities, etc.), but also be applied to build up high aspect ratio structures on undersized parts or to form devices by electroforming. Compared with other common MEMS (microelectromechanical systems) metal device fabrication techniques, such as vapor depositions, electroplating has several outstanding advantages. First, the fabrication process is cost-efficient because electroplating process can be set up easily …
