Per- And Polyfluoroalkyl Substance (Pfas) Degradation In Water And Soil Using Cold Atmospheric Plasma (Cap): A Review, Victor Somtochukwu Mbanugo, Boluwatife Stephen Ojo, Ta Chun Lin, Yue-Wern Huang, Marek Locmelis, Daoru Han

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are persistent organic chemicals found in numerous industrial applications and everyday products. The excessive amounts of PFASs in water and soil, together with their link to severe health issues, have prompted substantial public concerns, making their removal from the environment a necessity. Existing degradation techniques are frequently lacking due to their low efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and potential for secondary contamination. Cold Atmospheric Plasma (CAP) technology has emerged as a promising alternative, utilizing energized reactive species to break down PFASs under ambient conditions. Therefore, this review examines the efficacy and effectiveness of CAP in degrading PFASs by …

Development, Optimization, And Validation Of A High-Sensitivity Capillary Zone Electrophoresis System For Bioanalytical Applications, Aaron I. Mena

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) is a powerful analytical technique widely used for biomolecular separation due to its high resolution, efficiency, and sensitivity. This report presents the development and validation of a novel CZE system designed to improve modularity, reproducibility, and operational efficiency. The system integrates a laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) detection method with a 488 nm laser, enhanced fluid control through a negative pressure system, and a user-friendly GUI for automated operation and data acquisition. Performance verification included pressure stability tests, fluorescence accuracy assessments, and electrophoretic reproducibility studies. Comparative analysis with a previous CZE iteration confirmed improved baseline stability, peak resolution, …

Advancing Tka Biomechanics: From Joint Simulator To Boundary Condition Development, Yashar Ali Behnam Mar 2025

Advancing Tka Biomechanics: From Joint Simulator To Boundary Condition Development, Yashar Ali Behnam

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation addresses four specific aims that collectively attempted to advance the experimental and computational analysis of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) components. The first study focused on the development of a novel whole knee joint simulator capable of simultaneous tibiofemoral and patellofemoral knee loading. This simulator employs custom fixturing to facilitate dynamic, unconstrained, muscle-driven PF articulation alongside controlled TF contact mechanics. Validation against experimental measurements showed strong agreement, demonstrating the simulator's potential as a valuable tool for future TKA design and surgical technique investigations.

The second study verified implant-specific physiological boundary conditions which accurately simulate activities of daily living using …

Multi-Channel Features Combined With Gray Features For Remote Sensing Image Classification, Khaled Hasan, Hussien Harb, Lamiaa A. Elrefaei, Hala M. Abdel-Kader Mar 2025

Multi-Channel Features Combined With Gray Features For Remote Sensing Image Classification, Khaled Hasan, Hussien Harb, Lamiaa A. Elrefaei, Hala M. Abdel-Kader

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Image classification in remote sensing is crucial for various applications like deforestation monitoring and Land Use/Land Cover (LULC) mapping. While grayscale images offer simplicity, recent advancements have enhanced classification by integrating spatial and relative data. However, relying solely on grayscale images overlooks valuable color information from different channels. To overcome this, researchers have explored two strategies: combining diverse features and utilizing multi-channel features. These methods merge spatial information and exploit shared features across channels. Despite their improved performance compared to grayscale, they face increased dimensionality, necessitating dimensionality reduction techniques. In our study, we propose a novel approach that integrates spatial …

Using Thermal Camera Drones In Beef Cattle Roundup, Justin Wyatt Clawson, Eric Galloway, Shalyn Drake, Shawn Barstow, Ross Israelsen, Michael Pate

All Current Publications

Using drones with thermal sensors can be an effective tool in finding and collecting livestock from summer mountain ranges in the West. Drones can complete searches in much less time than required on horseback in demonstrated areas. Using drones reduces the workload of the rider and horse, saving time and energy and reducing the risk of injury. With proper training and certification, livestock producers can use drones to locate cattle and perform many other cost-cutting operations.

An Experimental And Numerical Investigation On The Flexural Behavior Of Two-Way Slabs Reinforced By Hybrid Reinforcement Schemes, Mahmoud A. Zidan, Mohamed H. Makhlouf, A. S. Debaiky, Gamal I. K.

Mansoura Engineering Journal

This study examines the Characteristics of flexural behavior in a two-way slab reinforced with a hybrid combination of Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer. (GFRP) and steel reinforcement. It determines the effectiveness of hybrid reinforcement and fiber addition in enhancing the flexural resistance of two-way reinforced concrete slabs. Researchers tested twelve reinforced concrete slabs and divided them into four groups. There were two control specimens: one steel-reinforced and one glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP)-reinforced, for comparison with the hybrid specimens. The remaining specimens were reinforced using a combination of steel bars and GFRP bars, The study focused on three-parameter categories: reinforcement type (steel …

Physical And Biological Effects On Moths’ Navigation Performance, Yiftach Golov, Roi Gurka, Alexander Liberzon, Ally Harari

Physics and Engineering Science

In a chemosensing system, the local olfactory environment experienced by a foraging organism is defined as an odorscape. Using the nocturnal pink bollworm moth (Pectinophora gossypiella), we tested the combined effect of three biophysical aspects in its immediate odorscape to shed light on the coupling effects of biotic and abiotic factors on navigation performances of a nocturnal forager: i) the quality of the pheromone source, ii) the pheromone availability, and iii) the airflow characteristics. The navigation performance of the males was investigated using a wind tunnel assay equipped with 3D infrared high-speed cameras. The navigation performance of the males was …

Impact Of Crack Location, Crack Initial Length, And Crosshead Speed On Fracture Toughness Of Polypropylene And Glass Fiber-Reinforced Polypropylene Pipes, R. Singer, A. Koriem, A. M. Ollick, M. Elhadary Mar 2025

Impact Of Crack Location, Crack Initial Length, And Crosshead Speed On Fracture Toughness Of Polypropylene And Glass Fiber-Reinforced Polypropylene Pipes, R. Singer, A. Koriem, A. M. Ollick, M. Elhadary

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Fracture toughness (KIC) is a critical parameter for evaluating the performance of materials, particularly in engineering applications where structural integrity is crucial. The objective of this study is to investigate the fracture toughness characteristics of polypropylene (PP) and glass fiber-reinforced polypropylene (GFPP) pipes. Specifically, evaluating the influence of crosshead speed, crack location, and initial crack length on the KIC of these materials under both tensile loading (Mode I fracture) and bending conditions. Tensile tests were conducted on both materials using two specimen configurations and varied notch lengths to simulate Mode I fracture conditions. Additionally, three-point bending tests …
