Aircraft In Agriculture, N. E. Shafer, J. D. Furrer, J. W. Lomax

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

Airplanes were first used in agriculture shortly after the close of World War I. They proved valuable for locating mosquito breeding areas, for forest fire patrol work, as an aid in locating outlaw cotton fields in the campaign against pink bollworm, and for surveying damage caused in large forested areas by the spruce budworm.

Leaflet No 1000 - Rate Of Milking With Machines - Further Results From Western Australian Herds, R. A. Bettenay Jan 1950

Leaflet No 1000 - Rate Of Milking With Machines - Further Results From Western Australian Herds, R. A. Bettenay

Bulletins 1 - 2999

IN an earlier article by this Department (Vol. XXVI No. 2 PP. 99-104) some introductory remarks were made on a study being conducted on the rate of milking by machine, and preliminary findings were recorded. The conclusion was reached that the rate of milking on most farms was too slow, it being considered that in the vicinity of five minutes per cow should be sufficient under machine milking and that, if the teat cups were left on for a longer period than this, damage to the udder was likely to follow.

Plan Of Development For Valley Gravity Project, Julius A. Krug, Michael W. Straus, Wesley R. Nelson May 1947

Plan Of Development For Valley Gravity Project, Julius A. Krug, Michael W. Straus, Wesley R. Nelson

Lower Rio Grande Valley Curated Material

"The Valley Gravity Project Plan has been formulated to furnish an adequate and dependable irrigation water supply for fertile and productive area in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, Texas, It would also provide drainage works, which would remove the threat of destruction of the economy of the area due to effects of a high water table and salt accumulations. The project works would permit generation of the maximum practicable amount of electrical energy which otherwise would be required to operate irrigation pumping plants. Other incidental benefits include fish and wildlife conservation, recreation and flood control."

Fifty Years Of Achievement In Agricultural Investigation, R. T. Prescott Mar 1939

Fifty Years Of Achievement In Agricultural Investigation, R. T. Prescott

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

In Nebraska, a hustling frontier state in 1887, the legislature hesitated not at all in taking advantage of the provisions of the Hatch Act, and now that fifty years have elapsed since the Station was founded, seventy-five years since the Land Grant College Act was passed and the U. S. Department of Agriculture established, and almost twenty-five years since the Agricultural Extension Service was added, it seems worth while to present a general summary of achievement within the state. The main object will be to show some of the important things that have been learned through the investigations of the …

The Accuracy Of Pressure Gauges Used On Household Steam Pressure Cookers, Arnold E. Baragar May 1938

The Accuracy Of Pressure Gauges Used On Household Steam Pressure Cookers, Arnold E. Baragar

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

In the pressure cooker, high temperature is obtained by using steam under pressure. Since the pressure gauge is used as the indicator of temperature it is essential that the gauge register the correct pressure. Hence, this paper deals mainly with a study of the accuracy of both new and old pressure gauges used on steam pressure cookers. At the same time, four other phases were investigated: (1) the proper functioning of safety valves, (2) the various methods of sealing the lid to the cooker, (3) the proper evacuation of air from the cooker, and (4) the use of a thermometer …

The Use Of A Small Electric Motor In Silo Filling, E. E. Brackett, E. B. Lewis Aug 1930

The Use Of A Small Electric Motor In Silo Filling, E. E. Brackett, E. B. Lewis

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

Filling a silo 30 feet or more in height with a motor as small as five horsepower has been looked upon in general by Nebraska farmers as an impractical, if not impossible, procedure. The practice is not unheard of in other states, and certainly the possibility of avoiding the large tractor-driven cutters and the large crews will be welcomed by those who have available service from power lines.

Hog Houses For Nebraska, O. W. Sjogren, I. D. Wood Apr 1924

Rammed Earth Walls For Buildings, U.S. Department Of Agriculture Aug 1923

Rammed Earth Walls For Buildings, U.S. Department Of Agriculture

Rammed Earth Collection (1923 - 1959)

Earth has been used for building dwellings from time immemorial. One method of use, superior to others, and which was known to the Romans has been preserved by tradition .t o modern times. This method consists of ramming slightly moist, specially selected earth, without the addition of straw or other material, between movable forms, and is known by itsFrench name, " pise de terre," which means "rammed earth." Pise de terre is a reliable building material when properly handled and is admirably adapted to structures on farms distant from transport routes. Little information has been published on rammed earth in …

The Nebraska Tractor Law And Rules For Official Tractor Tests, O. W. Sjogren, E. E. Brackett, C. W. Smith, F. R. Nohavec

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

The Nebraska Tractor Law, which became effective July 15, 1919, was enacted to encourage the manufacture and sale of improved types of tractors and to contribute to a more successful use of the tractor for farming. It was thought that the best method of accomplishing these objects would be to require a tractor of each model sold in the State to be tested at the State University and to have the results of these tests made public.

It was thought that the best method of accomplishing these objects would be to require a tractor of each model sold in the State to be tested at the State University and to have the results of these tests made public. These tests will give reliable information on the power, capacity and fuel consumption of each tractor and also some information on endurance. The …

Measuring Silage And Capacity Of Silos, L. W. Chase Jun 1917

Measuring Silage And Capacity Of Silos, L. W. Chase

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

The condition of the corn at filling time, the rate of filling, and the length of time settling has taken place before measuring the depth of the silage, all tend to cause variations in the weight per cubic foot of the silage and in the tonnage that can be placed in a silo. The greatest variation comes when very green corn or very ripe corn is used, and because of this it is possible that a cubic foot of green silage, which may weigh fifty pounds, holds no more dry matter than a cubic foot of overripe silage which weighs …
