Modulation Of Electrostatic Microelectromechanical Mirrors Using A Cmos Controller, Paul C. Rounsavall Mar 1999

Modulation Of Electrostatic Microelectromechanical Mirrors Using A Cmos Controller, Paul C. Rounsavall

Theses and Dissertations

Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) is a rapidly growing technology that lends itself particularly well to optical applications. An example of an optical MEMS device is the piston-action mirror that modulates the phase of reflected light. The phase of reflected light can be varied using thermal or electrostatic actuation to control the position of the mirror. In previous research, a modulation method to control thermally actuated mirrors was developed. This thesis presents the development, implementation, fabrication, and testing of a complimentary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) controller capable of directly interfacing between a digital system, such as a computer, and an electrostatically actuated …

Antenna Gain Enhancement Using A Photonic Band Gap Reflector, Karl C. Schloer Mar 1999

Antenna Gain Enhancement Using A Photonic Band Gap Reflector, Karl C. Schloer

Theses and Dissertations

Scientists have long known that periodic structures can filter electromagnetic (EM) waves. In the last decade, extension of one- and two-dimensionally periodic structures into a third periodic dimension has produced photonic band gap (PBG) structures. A PBG structure is characterized by its omnidirectional stop band at a set of frequencies determined by the structure's periodicity and permittivity. In the present research, we investigate such a structure as an antenna reflector. We aim to develop a modeling approach that provides accurate computations of PBG behavior without relying on massively parallel processing. We also construct and measure the bulk reflection and transmission …

Application Of The Finite Element Method To The Scattering Of A Two-Dimensional, Semi-Infinite Periodic Structure, Perry N. Villanueva Mar 1999

Application Of The Finite Element Method To The Scattering Of A Two-Dimensional, Semi-Infinite Periodic Structure, Perry N. Villanueva

Theses and Dissertations

Infinite periodic structures have been studied heavily because of their efficient filtering capabilities. They generally exhibit sharp frequency roll-offs at the frequency band of interest. In the RF region of the electromagnetic spectrum, periodic structures find applications such as radomes and photonic bandgap materials. Most studies have been done with infinitely periodic arrays because it is convenient to collapse an infinite array into one representative period using Floquet Analysis. Truncating an infinite array introduces an edge and invalidates Floquet analysis over the entire array. This thesis formulates a Finite Element Method (FEM) solution of a semi-infinite periodic array consisting of …

An Integrated Synthetic Aperture Radar/Global Positioning System/Inertial Navigation System For Target Geolocation Improvement, Brian J. Young Mar 1999

An Integrated Synthetic Aperture Radar/Global Positioning System/Inertial Navigation System For Target Geolocation Improvement, Brian J. Young

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores a potential integration technique to fuse information from an inertial navigation system (INS) and global positioning system (GPS) with synthetic aperture radar target measurements. Using Kalman filtering techniques, an INSIGPS/SAR integrated system was simulated in a single Kalman filter to analyze the SAR target geolocation accuracy benefits. Three different GPS receiver models were used in the integrated system: stand-alone (SGPS), differential (DGPS), and carrier-phase differential GPS (CPGPS). Each of these GPS models were integrated with a common INSISAR combination to determine the target geolocation accuarcy improvements due only to GPS receiver type. Thesis results show that SAR …

Loop Gain Estimation For Adaptive Control, Jamey P. Sillence Mar 1999

Loop Gain Estimation For Adaptive Control, Jamey P. Sillence

Theses and Dissertations

The identification of a linear discrete-time control system's loop gain is addressed. The classical Kalman filter theory for state estimation in linear control systems is extended, and the control system's loop gain and state are jointly estimated. A rigorous analysis of the measurement situation under consideration yields explicit formulae for the loop gain's unbiased estimate and estimation error's covariance.

Trade-Off Analysis Of Communications Capabilities Of Inter-Satellite Links, Andrew J. Feltman Mar 1999

Trade-Off Analysis Of Communications Capabilities Of Inter-Satellite Links, Andrew J. Feltman

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis designs, develops, and uses software Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs) to analyze the communications capabilities of Radio Frequency (RF) Inter-Satellite Links (ISLs). The GUIs are geared towards analyzing the proposed ISLs of the Discoverer II program, but are general enough to permit analysis of any free-space RF ISLs. Discoverer II is a demonstration program of low-earth orbiting satellites and is primarily focused on satellite-based sensor technology. This thesis shows RF ISLs can meet the program requirement to broadcast the sensor data back to CONUS in near-real-time. The GUIs operate in real-time and explore trade-offs in the communications capability by …

The Effect Of Registration Errors On Tracking In A Networked Radar System, Bradley J. Mortenson Mar 1999

The Effect Of Registration Errors On Tracking In A Networked Radar System, Bradley J. Mortenson

Theses and Dissertations

To successfully combine information from distributed radar sensors, it is essential that each sensor be correctly referenced in a global coordinate system. If there are biases in the reported position of these sensors, the reported target position will also be biased and the ensuing global estimate of the target position will be degraded. Furthermore, any biases in range or azimuth measurements of these sensors will likewise be reflected in the degradation of global estimate of target position. Registration is the process of ensuring that these errors do not result in the creation of an additional redundant target when only a …

Low Grazing Angle Terrain Backscattering Coefficient Generator, William N. O'Connor Mar 1999

Low Grazing Angle Terrain Backscattering Coefficient Generator, William N. O'Connor

Theses and Dissertations

A near-horizon probabilistic terrain backscatter coefficient generator is introduced, combining modified sea-state curves with Weibull-type probability density functions. A total of nine terrain type classifications (soils & rocks, trees, grasses, shrubs, short vegetation, roads, urban areas, dry snow, and wet snow) are supported, for seven radar bands (L, S, C, X, Ku, Ka, and W), and both linear (HH, VV) and cross (HV, VH) polarizations. The Weibull functions are based on measured sigma and match the published data. The functions also provide a probabilistic nature to the generator. Modified sea state curves are used in place of the Weibull functions …

A Climatology-Based Model For Long-Term Prediction Of Radar Beam Refraction, Todd S. Pittman Mar 1999

A Climatology-Based Model For Long-Term Prediction Of Radar Beam Refraction, Todd S. Pittman

Theses and Dissertations

The National Air Intelligence Center, WPAFB, OH, needs more accurate predictions of radar beam refraction. A new mode was developed for this thesis replacing the standard atmosphere approach with raytracing and climatology. Usually a microwave radio beam bends towards the earth with a radius of curvature greater than the earth's surface. However, seasonal and climatic variations influence the bending, and at times create temperature or moisture inversions that redirect the energy along the earth's surface leaving radio holes where there is no coverage. This model uses iterative raytracing to determine the most direct path from radar to target through the …

Ultra-Wideband Tem Horns, Transient Arrays And Exponential Curves: A Fdtd Look, Troy S. Utton Mar 1999

Ultra-Wideband Tem Horns, Transient Arrays And Exponential Curves: A Fdtd Look, Troy S. Utton

Theses and Dissertations

This research investigates the possibility of applying exponentially curved conducting plates to single-element Transverse Electromagnetic (TEM) horns and their transient arrays to enhance the UWB characteristics already experienced by these radiators. The first part of this study demonstrates the Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method's ability to duplicate experimental data, and establishes the baseline models used throughout the remainder of the research. The baseline models consist of the typical flat-triangle shaped conducting plates. The exponential taper models incorporate the exponential curves in the height, the width, and both the height and width directions. One, two- and four-element baseline configurations are compared to …

A Novel Readout Method For Focal Plane Array Imaging In The Presence Of Large Dark Current, Changqing Qiu Jan 1999

A Novel Readout Method For Focal Plane Array Imaging In The Presence Of Large Dark Current, Changqing Qiu

Dissertations

This research was an investigation of a novel readout method for focal plane array (FPA) optical imaging, especially for very sensitive detectors with large dark current. The readout method is based on periodically blocking the optical input enabling the removal of the dark current integration from the output. The research demonstrated that it is feasible to modulate the optical input with the designed readout circuit and thus achieve longer signal integration time to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio.

Study of a proposed circuit model showed that in theory the correlated readout method could increase the output voltage swing and reduce the …

An Interactive System For The Estimation Of Emissivity Of A Wafer In A Rapid Thermal Processing Chamber, Maurizio Fulco Jan 1999

An Interactive System For The Estimation Of Emissivity Of A Wafer In A Rapid Thermal Processing Chamber, Maurizio Fulco

Theses

Rapid thermal processing (RTP) is a method of thermally processing wafers for the manufacture of integrated circuits. During the thermal processing of wafers, it is essential that the wafer temperature follow a pre-specified temperature trajectory and that the temperature across the wafer be uniform especially at high temperatures. To ensure that the above objectives of RTP temperature control be met at any time during the process, the estimation of some parameters of the process is of fundamental importance in the design of the control system.

This thesis demonstrates the implementation of an interactive software system in which the emissivity of …

Direct Current High-Pressure Glow Discharges, Robert H. Stark, Karl H. Schoenbach Jan 1999

Direct Current High-Pressure Glow Discharges, Robert H. Stark, Karl H. Schoenbach

Bioelectrics Publications

Stabilization and control of a high-pressure glow discharge by means of a microhollow cathode discharge has been demonstrated. The microhollow cathode discharge, which is sustained between two closely spaced electrodes with openings of approximately 100 μm diam, serves as plasma cathode for the high-pressure glow. Small variations in the microhollow cathode discharge voltage generate large variations in the microhollow cathode discharge current and consequently in the glow discharge current. In this mode of operation the electrical characteristic of this system of coupled discharges resembles that of a vacuum triode. Using the microhollow cathode discharge as plasma cathode it was possible …

Direct Current Glow Discharges In Atmospheric Air, Robert H. Stark, Karl H. Schoenbach Jan 1999

Direct Current Glow Discharges In Atmospheric Air, Robert H. Stark, Karl H. Schoenbach

Bioelectrics Publications

Direct current glow discharges have been operated in atmospheric air by using 100 μm microhollow cathode discharges as plasma cathodes. The glow discharges were operated at currents of up to 22 mA, corresponding to current densities of 3.8 A/cm2 and at average electric fields of 1.2 kV/cm. Electron densities in the glow are in the range from 1012 to 1013  cm−3. Varying the current of the microhollow cathode discharge allows us to control the current in the atmospheric pressure glow discharge. Large volume atmospheric pressure air plasmas can be generated by operating microhollow cathode discharges …

Implementation And Performance Study Of Image Data Hiding/Watermarking Schemes, Arkadiusz Edward Komenda Jan 1999

Implementation And Performance Study Of Image Data Hiding/Watermarking Schemes, Arkadiusz Edward Komenda

Theses

Two data hiding / watermarking techniques for grayscale and color images are presented. One of them is DCT based, another uses DFT to embed data. Both methods were implemented in software utilizing C/C++. The complete listings of these programs are included. A comprehensive reliability analysis was performed on both schemes, subjecting watermarked images to JPEG, SPIRT and MPEG-2 compressions. In addition, the pictures were examined by exposing them to common signal processing operations such as image resizing, rotation, histogram equalization and stretching, random, uniform and Gaussian noise addition, brightness and contrast variations, gamma correction, image sharpening and softening, edge enhancement, …

Self-Enhancement Of Dynamic Gratings In Photogalvanic Crystals, Nickolai Kukhtarev, Sergei F. Lyuksyutov, Preben Buchhave, Tatiana Kukhtareva, K. Sayano, Partha P. Banerjee Nov 1998

Self-Enhancement Of Dynamic Gratings In Photogalvanic Crystals, Nickolai Kukhtarev, Sergei F. Lyuksyutov, Preben Buchhave, Tatiana Kukhtareva, K. Sayano, Partha P. Banerjee

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

We have developed a compact closed-form solution of the band transport model for high-contrast gratings in photogalvanic crystals. Our solution predicts the effect of the photoconductivity and the electric field grating enhancement due to the photogalvanic effect. We predict a pronounced dependence of the steady-state photogalvanic current on the contrast of the interference pattern and an increase of holographic storage time due to the enhancement of the photoconductivity grating contrast. In the high contrast limit and a large photogalvanic effect the refractive index grating will be shifted from the position of the intensity modulation pattern, contrary to the usually adopted …

Two Dimensional, Time Dependent Modeling And Simulation Of Semi-Insulating Gaas High-Power Photoconductive Switches, Prakasit Kayasit Oct 1998

Two Dimensional, Time Dependent Modeling And Simulation Of Semi-Insulating Gaas High-Power Photoconductive Switches, Prakasit Kayasit

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The current-voltage (I-V) characteristics and photoconductive behavior of semi-insulating GaAs (SI GaAs) high-power switches have been investigated by using a two-dimensional, time dependent, drift diffusion transport model. The dc current-voltage behavior as predicted by the results of this model was compared with available experimental data to evaluate the accuracy and validity of the model. The results show very good agreement, Next, research was carried out to investigate the behavior of the switches under high-field operation.

Simulations at high voltages emphasize on the two following processes: (a) The mechanism of impact ionization and the effect of this mechanism on device stability …

Automatic Analysis Of Electronic Drawings Using Neural Network, Yi Shi Aug 1998

Automatic Analysis Of Electronic Drawings Using Neural Network, Yi Shi

Dissertations

Neural network technique has been found to be a powerful tool in pattern recognition. It captures associations or discovers regularities with a set of patterns, where the types, number of variables or diversity of the data are very great, the relationships between variables are vaguely understood, or the relationships are difficult to describe adequately with conventional approaches.

In this dissertation, which is related to the research and the system design aiming at recognizing the digital gate symbols and characters in electronic drawings, we have proposed: (1) A modified Kohonen neural network with a shift-invariant capability in pattern recognition; (2) An …

Adaptive Bootstrap Signal Separators For Bpsk/Qam-Modulated Wireless Cdma Systems In A Multipath Environment, Nico J.M. Van Waes Aug 1998

Adaptive Bootstrap Signal Separators For Bpsk/Qam-Modulated Wireless Cdma Systems In A Multipath Environment, Nico J.M. Van Waes

Dissertations

CDMA is an attractive multiple-access scheme, because of its potential capacity increase and its anti-multipath fading capability. For satisfactory performance, however, the effect of the "near-far" problem has to be resolved. This problem can be combated by using power-control, which, however, results in an overall reduction in communication ranges, and thus in a loss of capacity. Among other methods for mitigating the near-far problem is the use of decorrelating receivers, both of fixed type, which directly utilizes the cross-correlation of the users codes, and of adaptive type, which uses recursive algorithms that leads to signal decorrelation. Not to lessen the …

Telephone-Accessed Controller Using Cebus For Device Control Over Power Line, Gerald Aska Aug 1998

Telephone-Accessed Controller Using Cebus For Device Control Over Power Line, Gerald Aska

Theses

The CEBus standard has made it possible for devices developed by different manufacturers to communicate over the power line. Further, the standard allows analog adjustments of devices besides transmitting and receiving binary information. This Controller extends the distance from which these devices can be controlled.

To extend the distance of communication with a device, a telephone line interface was developed that allows the user to communicate with a CEBus device via the Controller. The Controller responses [sic] to Central Office signaling and opens its communication channel to allow the user to provide it with the commands by using the telephone …

High Pressure Radio-Frequency Microhollow Cathode Discharges, Anja Annett Muller Jul 1998

High Pressure Radio-Frequency Microhollow Cathode Discharges, Anja Annett Muller

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A new field of microhollow cathode discharges is represented by the RF microhollow cathode discharge. So far, the behavior and related physical processes of the RF microhollow cathode discharge are not well investigated.

RF microhollow discharges in air at high pressures were investigated under different experimental conditions. The geometry was changed by reducing the cathode hole diameter and the dielectric spacer thickness. By adding a noble gas to air, the influence of additive gases was explored. Additionally, the parallel operation of RF microhollow discharges was investigated.

It was shown that stable RF microhollow cathode discharges could only be sustained up …

Electrical Characteristics And Parallel Operation Of Microhollow Cathode Discharges, Wenhui Shi Jul 1998

Electrical Characteristics And Parallel Operation Of Microhollow Cathode Discharges, Wenhui Shi

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This thesis describes the electrical properties of microhollow cathode discharges with argon as filling gas. The appearance and current-voltage characteristics of microhollow cathode discharges have been recorded. Three kinds of discharge modes (predischarge, hollow cathode discharge and abnormal discharge) have been observed. The range of operation of the hollow cathode discharge has been found to be 0.5 < pD & 5 Torr cm in argon. By reducing the hole diameter to 100 pm, we were able to operate the discharge to atmospheric pressure in a dc mode. The possibility of dc parallel operation of microhollow cathode discharges was explored. Parallel operation could be obtained without individual ballast for discharges with a positive I-V slope greater than 10 V/mA over a voltage range of more than 5 % of the sustaining voltage. For parallel operation outside the range the ballasting is required. This model was explored by using a segmented anode model. The result of the simple calculation coincides well with the experiment result, where a semi-insulator silicon was used as distributed ballast.

Experimental Investigations Of Wavelength And Angular Errors In Holographic Gratings With Non-Bragg-Matched Read Beams, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee, Vivek Ray Jul 1998

Experimental Investigations Of Wavelength And Angular Errors In Holographic Gratings With Non-Bragg-Matched Read Beams, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee, Vivek Ray

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Perfect Bragg matching is generally desirable for accurate optical interconnections with holographic gratings. In reality, however, gratings may be illuminated by READ beams with non-Bragg-matched angles, or wavelengths, or both. In such cases, the scattered beams are generally misdirected, and may suffer loss of efficiency and possibly more serious errors such as crosstalk noise or missed connections. A conventional wave-vector triad method of analyzing the scattered beam errors leads readily to near-Bragg estimates of the output angular misalignment. However, the READ wave-vector triads appear to indicate a possible wavelength shift in the output beam even with a Bragg-matched READ wavelength, …

Coupled Electrodynamic-Monte Carlo Simulations Of Nanoscale Gaas Terahertz Optical Mixers, Jiang Li Jul 1998

Coupled Electrodynamic-Monte Carlo Simulations Of Nanoscale Gaas Terahertz Optical Mixers, Jiang Li

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The concept of mixing or heterodyning has traditionally been used for microwaves and for radio frequency communications. However, the concept can easily be extended into the optical frequency regime. By doing so, the photomixing process can serve as a very versatile tool for both the generation of ultrahigh frequency (terahertz) and the detection of weak optical signals.

The aim of this thesis is to perform a theoretical study of the photomixing process inside GaAs devices as the non-linear elements. A coupled approach which combines the Monte Carlo simulation scheme for the carrier transport, with Maxwell's equation for the electrodynamics, has …

Reactions Of Oxygen And Nitric Oxide In A Microhollow Electrode Discharge, Joseph L. Desormeaux Jr. Jul 1998

Reactions Of Oxygen And Nitric Oxide In A Microhollow Electrode Discharge, Joseph L. Desormeaux Jr.

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Microhollow electrode discharges have been developed and researched in the Physical Electronics Research Institute Laboratories. This discharge typically operates in direct current mode. Microhollow electrode discharges are non-thermal discharges that produce electrons with energies greater than 10 electron volts. Passing gas mixtures through non-equilibrium discharges invokes excitation or dissociation of gas molecules.

The scope of my research was to study the effect of the discharge on the chemistry of two gases, oxygen and nitric oxide in nitrogen mixture. Initial experiments were performed in an effort to produce ozone near atmospheric pressure. This seemed possible since the discharge has a high-energy …

Space-Time Reduced Rank Methods And Cfar Signal Detection Algorithms With Applications To Hprf Radar, Tareq F. Ayoub May 1998

Space-Time Reduced Rank Methods And Cfar Signal Detection Algorithms With Applications To Hprf Radar, Tareq F. Ayoub

Dissertations

In radar applications, the statistical properties (covariance matrix) of the interference are typically unknown a priori and are estimated from a dataset with limited sample support. Often, the limited sample support leads to numerically ill-conditioned radar detectors. Under such circumstances, classical interference cancellation methods such as sample matrix inversion (SMI) do not perform satisfactorily. In these cases, innovative reduced-rank space-time adaptive processing (STAP) techniques outperform full-rank techniques. The high pulse repetition frequency (HPRF) radar problem is analyzed and it is shown that it is in the class of adaptive radar with limited sample support. Reduced-rank methods are studied for the …

A Low-Cost High-Speed Twin-Prefetching Dsp-Based Shared-Memory System For Real-Time Image Processing Applications, Charalambos Stephanou Christou May 1998

A Low-Cost High-Speed Twin-Prefetching Dsp-Based Shared-Memory System For Real-Time Image Processing Applications, Charalambos Stephanou Christou

Dissertations

This dissertation introduces, investigates, and evaluates a low-cost high-speed twin-prefetching DSP-based bus-interconnected shared-memory system for real-time image processing applications. The proposed architecture can effectively support 32 DSPs in contrast to a maximum of 4 DSPs supported by existing DSP-based bus- interconnected systems. This significant enhancement is achieved by introducing two small programmable fast memories (Twins) between the processor and the shared bus interconnect. While one memory is transferring data from/to the shared memory, the other is supplying the core processor with data. The elimination of the traditional direct linkage of the shared bus and processor data bus makes feasible the …

Performance Improvements In Wireless Cdma Communications Utilizing Adaptive Antenna Arrays, Weichen Ye May 1998

Performance Improvements In Wireless Cdma Communications Utilizing Adaptive Antenna Arrays, Weichen Ye

Dissertations

This dissertation studies applications of adaptive antenna arrays and space-time adaptive processing (STAP) in wireless code-division multiple-access (CDMA) communications. The work addresses three aspects of the CDMA communications problems: (I) near-far resistance, (2) reverse link, (3) forward link. In each case, adaptive arrays are applied and their performance is investigated.

The near-far effect is a well known problem which affects the reverse link of CDMA communication systems. The near-far resistance of STAP is analyzed for two processing methods: maximal ratio combining and optimum combining. It. is shown that while maximal ratio combining is not near-far resistant, optimum combining is near-far …

Investigation Of Pathophysiologic Trends In Caucasian And Afro-American Hypertensives By Means Of Heart Rate Variability Recording During Upright Tilt-Table Testing, Jose F. Torrealba May 1998

Investigation Of Pathophysiologic Trends In Caucasian And Afro-American Hypertensives By Means Of Heart Rate Variability Recording During Upright Tilt-Table Testing, Jose F. Torrealba

Theses

The incidence of hypertension is more prevalent among the Afro-American population than the Caucasians and there is not a satisfactory explanation for this discrepancy.

Heart Rate Variability (HRV) has been demonstrated to reflect the relative activities of the sympathetic (SMP) and parasympathetic (PSMP) divisions of the autonomic nervous system (ANS).

This study consisted in comparing the HRV, as well as the blood pressure (BP) of four different groups during up-right tilt table testing. The subjects were grouped by age, gender, race and health condition. Analysis in time and frequency domain was applied to the data. In the frequency domain, the …
