Contextualized Mobile Support For Learning By Doing In The Real World, Ray Bareiss, Natalie Linnell, Martin Griss Dec 2010

Contextualized Mobile Support For Learning By Doing In The Real World, Ray Bareiss, Natalie Linnell, Martin Griss

Ray Bareiss

This research addresses the use of mobile devices with both embedded and external sensors to provide contextualized help, advice, and remediation to learners engaged in real-world learn-by-doing tasks. This work is situated within the context of learning a complex procedure, in particular emergency responders learning to conduct urban search and rescue operations. Research issues include the design and delivery of contextualized performance support and the inferring of learner actions and intentions from sensor data to ensure that the right support is delivered just in time, as it is relevant to what the learner is doing.

Voltage Impulse Induced Bistable Magnetization Switching In Multiferroic Heterostructures, Tianxiang Nan Dec 2010

Voltage Impulse Induced Bistable Magnetization Switching In Multiferroic Heterostructures, Tianxiang Nan

Tianxiang Nan

We report on voltage impulse induced reversible bistable magnetization switching in FeGaB/lead zirconate titanate (PZT) multiferroic heterostructures at room temperature. This was realized through strain-mediated magnetoelectric coupling between ferroelectric PZT and ferromagnetic FeGaB layer. Two reversible and stable voltage-impulse induced mechanical strain states were obtained in the PZT by applying an electric field impulse with its amplitude smaller than the electric coercive field, which led to reversible voltage impulse induced bistable magnetization switching. These voltage impulse induced bistable magnetization switching in multiferroic heterostructures provides a promising approach to power efficient bistable magnetization switching that is crucial for information storage.

Fpga Implementation Of Pipeline Digit-Slicing Multiplier-Less Radix 2 2 Dif Sdf Butterfly For Fast Fourier Transform Structure, Yazan Samir, Rozita Teymourzadeh, Masuri Othman, Shabiul Islam Dec 2010

Fpga Implementation Of Pipeline Digit-Slicing Multiplier-Less Radix 2 2 Dif Sdf Butterfly For Fast Fourier Transform Structure, Yazan Samir, Rozita Teymourzadeh, Masuri Othman, Shabiul Islam

Dr. Rozita Teymourzadeh, CEng.

The need for wireless communication has driven the communication systems to high performance. However, the main bottleneck that affects the communication capability is the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), which is the core of most modulators. This paper presents FPGA implementation of pipeline digit-slicing multiplier-less radix 22 DIF (Decimation In Frequency) SDF (single path delay feedback) butterfly for FFT structure. The approach taken; in order to reduce computation complexity in butterfly multiplier, digit-slicing multiplier-less technique was utilized in the critical path of pipeline Radix-22 DIF SDF FFT structure. The proposed design focused on the trade-off between the speed and active silicon …

Optimised Toolbox For The Design Of Rotary Reluctance Motors, Grace I, Rozita Teymourzadeh, Bright S, Aravind Cv Dec 2010

Optimised Toolbox For The Design Of Rotary Reluctance Motors, Grace I, Rozita Teymourzadeh, Bright S, Aravind Cv

Dr. Rozita Teymourzadeh, CEng.

Operation of the rotary reluctance machine is highly affected due to the sequential attraction-repulsion principle of the adjacent phase excitation. The problem has been identified and addressed by various researchers in the past decades. Effective magnetic design is one way of minimizing the effect. However it is tedious and time consuming as the design procedure involve higher analytical derivation and calculations. This paper presents a simpler graphical user interface toolbox to use for the design of reluctance motors. The developed interface calculates the analytical values of the aligned, unaligned and intermediate inductance values so that the user can interpret the …

Finding An Optimal Path: Highways Versus Local Roads, Gabriel Leiner Dec 2010

Finding An Optimal Path: Highways Versus Local Roads, Gabriel Leiner

Gabriel Leiner

Commuters across the United States are often presented with the dilemma of whether to wait at an onramp to get on a highway or look for short-cuts on local roads. An answer to this question may lie in the use of Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC) wireless technology. With the touch of a button, connected vehicle technology could allow drivers to access real time information about the sizes and speeds of queues at highway onramps, as well as the signal phases of traffic lights on local roads. In the future, drivers could rely on this information to make valid judgments …

Performance Of Polarization Diversity In A Linear Array Antenna, Amean S. Al_Safi Dec 2010

Performance Of Polarization Diversity In A Linear Array Antenna, Amean S. Al_Safi

Amean S Al_Safi

Multiple antennas systems require a separation distance between these antennas greater than or equal half wavelength. In this paper, we study the ability to reduce these separation distance by virtue of polarization diversity, i.e each two adjacent antenna replaced by one dual polarized antenna .The obtained results show that the use of polarization will reduce the required separation distance between antennas and the performance will be best, and these improvement will be more useful at the systems with greater number of antennas, increasing the correlation between antennas due to the separation angle will reduce the channel capacity. The results also …

Link Scheduling In Multi-Transmit-Receive Wireless Networks, Hong-Ning Dai, Soung Chang Liew, Liqun Fu Dec 2010

Link Scheduling In Multi-Transmit-Receive Wireless Networks, Hong-Ning Dai, Soung Chang Liew, Liqun Fu

Hong-Ning Dai

This paper investigates the problem of link scheduling to meet traffic demands with minimum airtime in a multitransmit-receive (MTR) wireless network. MTR networks are a new class of networks, in which each node can simultaneously transmit to a number of other nodes, or simultaneously receive from a number of other nodes. The MTR capability can be enabled by the use of multiple directional antennas or multiple channels. Potentially, MTR can boost the network capacity significantly. However, link scheduling that makes full use of the MTR capability must be in place before this can happen. We show that optimal link scheduling …

Exploring Security Improvement Of Wireless Networks With Directional Antennas, Hong-Ning Dai, Dong Li, Raymond Chi-Wing Wong

Hong-Ning Dai

There are a number of studies on using directional antennas in wireless networks. Many of them concentrate on analyzing the theoretical capacity improvement by using directional antennas. Other studies focus on designing proper Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols to improve the practical network throughput. There are few works on the security improvement using directional antennas. In this paper, we explore the benefits of directional antennas in security improvements on both singlehop and multi-hop wireless networks. In particular, we found that using directional antennas in wireless networks can significantly reduce the eavesdropping probabilities of both single-hop transmissions as well as multi-hop …
