Modern aircraft — both piloted fly-by-wire commercial aircraft as well as UAVs — more and more depend on highly complex safety critical software systems with many sensors and computer-controlled actuators. Despite careful design and V&V of the software, severe incidents have happened due to malfunctioning software.

In this paper, we discuss the use of Bayesian networks to monitor the health of the on-board software and sensor system, and to perform advanced on-board diagnostic reasoning. Partial reconfiguration (PR) is the process of configuring a subset of resources on a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) while the remainder of the device continues to operate. PR extends the usability of FPGAs and makes it possible to perform design bootstrapping. Just like bootstrapping in PCs, bootstrapping in FPGAs consists of using a small application to initialize basic services and load a larger, more complex application to the device. Bayesian networks, which may be compiled to arithmetic circuits in the interest of speed and predictability, provide a probabilistic method for system fault diagnosis. Currently, there is a limitation in arithmetic circuits in that they can only represent discrete random variables, while important fault types such as drift and offset faults are continuous and induce continuous sensor data. A design methodology for synthesizing power-optimized decimation filters for wideband Delta Sigma (ΔΣ) analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) for next-generation wireless standards is presented. The decimation filter is designed to filter the out-of-band quantization noise from a fifth-order continuous-time ΔΣ modulator, with 20 MHz signal bandwidth and 14-bits resolution. The modulator employs an oversampling ratio (OSR) of 16 with a clock rate of 640 MHz. Retiming, pipelining, Canonical Signed Digits (CSD) encoding has been utilized along with an optimized halfband filter to realize the power savings in the overall decimation filter. This thesis is focused on modeling, control, stability, and power management of electronically-interfaced distributed energy resource (DER) units for microgrids. Voltage amplitude and frequency regulation in an islanded microgrid is one of the main control requirements. To that end, first a mathematical model is developed for an islanded DER system and then, based on the developed model, amplitude and frequency control schemes are proposed for (i) balanced and linear loads and (ii) unbalanced and nonlinear loads. The overall success of a brain computer interface (BCI) is largely dependent on the features used to make decisions. Noise in the electroencephalography (EEG) increases the difficulty of acquiring meaningful features. Previous literature suggests teaching subjects meditation and relaxation techniques may improve features relevant to BCI operation. The purpose of this study was to investigate performance on several cognitive protocols for both individuals who use meditation techniques and those who do not use these techniques. Resources are presented for fostering paper-based election technology. They comprise a diverse collection of real and simulated ballot and survey images, and software tools for ballot synthesis, registration, segmentation, and ground-truthing. The grids underlying the designated location of voter marks are extracted from 13,315 degraded ballot images. The actual skew angles of sample ballots, recorded as part of complete ballot descriptions compiled with the interactive ground-truthing tool, are compared with their automatically extracted parameters. The average error is 0.1 degrees. These results provide a baseline for the application of digital image analysis to the scrutiny of electoral ballots.

Vote counting accuracy has become a well-known issue in the vote collection process. Digital image processing techniques can be incorporated in the analysis of printed election ballots. Current image processing techniques in the vote collection process are heavily dependent on the anticipated, geometric positioning of the vote. This paper proposes a parallel energy-sharing control for fuel cell hybrid vehicles (FCHVs) application. The hybrid source consists of fuel cells (FCs) stack, battery packs and Ultracapacitor (UC) modules. In the proposed parallel energy sharing control, each source is connected to a DC bus via power electronics converters. As microbolometer pixel dimensions for infrared imagers continue to decrease, the need for full-wave analysis in the design process is enhanced. Using reflectance as the validation point, an electromagnetic model of a dual-layer microbolometer pixel design was created for a 25 μm pixel design, and an in-depth study of the design was performed. With this model validated, further explorations were completed with a reduced size pixel. The first problem involves the development of an estimation scheme which can accurately recover the orientation, or angular position, of the aircraft. With the introduction of GPS technology, came the ability to produce maps of plant cover and health over large areas. By correlating the reflectance values of a plant with its respective GPS coordinates, we can form a bird’s eye view of relative plant health using different colors. The commercialization of high precision GPS receivers has allowed researchers to plot these maps with increased accuracy, limiting error to less than 1 inch.

The crop circle spectrometer represents a breakthrough in unbiased sensor data. Unlike traditional passive sensors, it pulses light at a speed of 20,000 times per second. With this comes the ability of these filters to discern reflectance measurements from that of natural sunlight, allowing it to be used in environments of sun, shade, and even darkness. The propagation of a free space optical communication signal through atmospheric turbulence experiences random fluctuations in intensity, including signal fades which negatively impact the communications link performance. This research develops an analytical probability density function (PDF) to model the best case scenario of using multiple independent beams to reduce the intensity fluctuations. The PDF was further developed to account for partially correlated beams, such as would be experienced by beams having finite separation. In this dissertation, feature extraction algorithms have been developed for extraction of characteristic features from harmonic signals. The common theme for all developed algorithms is the simplicity in generating a significant set of features directly from the time domain harmonic signal. The features are a time domain representation of the composite, yet sparse, harmonic signature in the spectral domain.The algorithms are adequate for low-power unattended sensors which perform sensing, feature extraction, and classification in a stand-alone scenario. The macro-dataflow model of execution has been used in scheduling heuristics for directed acyclic graphs. Since this model was developed for the scheduling of parallel applications on distributed computing systems, it is inadequate when applied to the multicore shared-memory computers prevalent in the market today. Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) have gained a great deal of interest, due to their potential for high efficiency power generation and ability to utilize hydrogen fuel, as well as various hydrocarbon-based fuels. This paper investigates the performance of synchronous generators to grid voltage unbalance and grid faults. A Model of a synchronous generator with a full converter is implemented in the SimPowerSystems toolbox in Matlab/Simulink. Methods to modify the converter control schemes to improve the synchronous generator systems response to grid voltage unbalance and grid faults are investigated. Grid faults including grid voltage unbalance, and line-to-ground faults are introduced into the model at specific times to analyse the performance of the wind generation system. This work addresses the design of stochastically resilient or non-fragile continuous-time Luenberger observers for systems with incrementally conic nonlinearities. Such designs maintain the convergence and/or performance when the observer gain is erroneously implemented due possibly to computational errors i.e. round off errors in computing the observer gain or changes in the observer parameters during operation. The error in the observer gain is modeled as a random process and a common linear matrix inequality formulation is presented to address the stochastically resilient observer design problem for a variety of performance criteria. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the theoretical results.

Clock generation and distribution are getting difficult due to increased die size and increased number of cores in a microprocessor. Clock frequencies of microprocessors have been increased and expected to trend 4GHz in near future. This increased clock frequency requires to limit the clock skew and jitter to 5~10% of clock frequency, which is 12.5~25ps. On top of this, non-ideal power supply behavior (supply droops) is worsening available timing margin to the critical paths.
