A three-dimensional subgridding algorithm for the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method is proposed in this paper. The method is based on interpolation of electric and magnetic current densities. The coarse-fine mesh ratio can be either 1:2 or 1:3. Results of a test model utilizing a lossless cavity excited with a dipole show no tendency of instability after 500000 time steps. The reflection in time domain at the subgridding interface was calculated to test the accuracy of the subgridding algorithm.

Time-domain simulation algorithms are widely used in the anaylsis and design of electromagnetic systems. Many of them are characterized by high Q's. Thus, the simulations have to employ many time steps in order to achieve a complete characterization of these systems. This time-consuming computational effort can be avoided if the late instants of time are extrapolated by applying a parametric estimation algorithm. An optimized implementation of a time-domain extrapolation method and a stop criterion are discussed in this paper. A dual-step MTL / FDTD strategy is proposed for anticipating full-vehicle level EMI. In the first step, the current distribution along a cable bundle connecting to electronic modules an an automotive platform is calculated using multi-conductor transmission-line (MTL) models. In order to account for common-mode discontinuities on the vehicle chassis, e.g., slots, 3D full-wave modeling (FDTD) is used to determine radiation impedances, which are thereafter incorporated in the MTL models for compensating the radiation power loss. Plated through-hole (PTH) vias are commonly used in printed circuit boards. They usually leave open stubs if the signal(s) does not transition the entire depth of the board. These open stubs can have a negative impact on signal transmission. This summary reports the investigation of the impact of the open via stubs in a typical backpanel design.

A simple method of approximating frequency characteristics of composites in a form convenient for time-domain numerical modeling is proposed. The frequency characteristics can be obtained from experiment or calculations based on the Maxwell Garnett mixing formalism. The resultant frequency characteristic might be of a complex shape corresponding to a combination of a number of absorption peaks. The approximation is made by a series of Debye-like terms using a genetic algorithm (GA). This leads to the necessity of taking a number of terms in the approximating series. A coupled transmission line model for narrow slot structures in DC power planes is proposed. This approach, combined with SPICE-based cavity models and a segmentation method, provides an easy and fast way to model relatively complex structures of power planes with narrow slots often used for isolation purposes. This approach is used to achieve isolation using gapping. The cavity model formulations for rectangular and isosceles right triangular segments are reviewed. A time domain approach to investigate and predict impedances and scattering parameters of a DC power bus is proposed. This approach is based on a cavity model and is achieved using a circuit simulation tool - SPICE. A SPICE-based circuit model for triangular power plane segments is described, verified and applied to simulate both the frequency and time domain characteristics of an irregularly shaped two-layer PCB board. Furthermore, the current draw from a surface mount technology (SMT) decoupling capacitor is simulated and estimated using this approach. EMC engineers often use current probes to detect common mode currents. It is necessary to characterize the probes up to Giga Hertz frequencies. Existing calibration methods for current clamps suffer from the problem of not directly measuring the current within the current clamp. Instead they either reconstruct the current from measurements at other locations or they use assumptions regarding the geometry which allows them to use a current that is measured at a different location without applying a mathematical correction. Power system stabilizers are widely used to generate supplementary control signals for the excitation system in order to damp out the low frequency oscillations. This paper proposes a stable neural network (NN) controller for the stabilization of a single machine infinite bus power system. Direct inference of heart-surface potentials from body-surface potentials has been the goal of most recent work on electrocardiographic inverse solutions. We developed and tested indirect methods for inferring heart-surface potentials based on estimation of regularized multipole sources. Regularization was done using Tikhonov, constrained-least-squares, and multipole-truncation techniques. These multipole-equivalent methods (MEMs) were compared to the conventional mixed boundary-value method (BVM) in a realistic torso model with up to 20% noise added to body-surface potentials and ±1 cm error in heart position and size. Most existing power supplies for induction heating equipment produce voltage at a single (adjustable) frequency. Recently, however, induction heating power supplies that produce voltage at two (adjustable) frequencies have been researched and even commercialized. Dual-frequency power supplies are a significant development for heat-treating workpieces with uneven geometries, such as gears, since different portions of such workpieces are heated dissimilarly at a single frequency and so require a two step process using a single-frequency power supply. A scale model of a tractor-trailer truck was developed as a testbed for control algorithms. The truck operates in autonomous or semi-autonomous modes. An on-board Pentium computer with a PC104 bus performs the computations and data collection. Various sensors and a wireless transceiver are on-board the truck. Our research focus has been in the autonomous control of vehicles using intelligent systems. Pulse Regulation control scheme is presented and applied to BIFRED converter operating in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM). In contrast to the conventional control techniques, the principal idea of Pulse Regulation is to regulate the output voltage using a series of high and low power pulses generated by the current of the input inductor. In this paper, analysis of BIFRED converter operating in DCM is presented. The basic idea of Pulse Regulation as well as the estimation of the output voltage ripple is introduced. Experimental results on a prototype converter are also demonstrated.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting synovial joints of the body, especially the hands and feet, spine, knees and hips. For many patients, the cervical spine is associated with rheumatoid arthritis. Subluxation is the abnormal movement of one of the bones that comprise a joint. In this research, image analysis techniques have been investigated for the recognition of cervical spine x-ray images with one or more instances of subaxial subluxation. Receiver operating characteristic curve results are presented, showing potential for subaxial subluxation discrimination on an image-by-image basis.

We present an approach for fault detection in layered interconnection networks (LINs). An LIN is a generalized multistage interconnection network commonly used in reconfigurable systems; the nets (links) are arranged in sets (referred to as layers) of different size. Switching elements (made of simple switches such as transmission-gate-like devices) are arranged in a cascade to connect pairs of layers. The switching elements of an LIN have the same number of switches, but the switching patterns may not be uniform. This paper addresses boost converter circuits that are built for very low input voltages, i.e. less than 1 V. Such circuits can be useful for single-cell solar and fuel cell power supplies. Important issues are physical size, high conversion ratio, efficiency, and startup. Several experimental studies show the impact of these issues. A startup technique is proposed that works for arbitrarily low input voltages.

In the power system stability problems the primary actors in the mathematical system model are the differential equations defining the dynamic state variables of generation and load. These differential equations are coupled together by load flow equations. Mathematically the load flow equations are nonlinear algebraic equations. This paper describes the evaluation of the susceptibility of a cavity with an aperture using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method and experimentally. To reduce the computing time, the FDTD method is used for the radiation from the cavity and the susceptibility is obtained by using the reciprocity theorem. The cavity used here is modeled after a full-tower desktop enclosure with a 3.5-in bay. The susceptibility characteristics are evaluated by measuring outputs of a monopole antenna and transmission lines installed in the cavity. A new type of multilevel inverter is introduced which is created by cascading two three-phase three-level inverters using the load connection, but requires only one dc voltage source. This new inverter can operate as a seven-level inverter and naturally splits the power conversion into a higher-voltage lower-frequency inverter and a lower-voltage higher-frequency inverter. This type of system presents particular advantages to Naval ship propulsion systems which rely on high power quality, survivable drives. Evaluation of thickness and material properties of coatings and dielectric slabs is an important practical issue. Microwave nondestructive testing techniques, using open-ended rectangular waveguide and coaxial probes have shown great potential for this purpose. However, to evaluate one parameter requires that the other be known a priori. This paper discusses the use of a relatively efficient method for evaluating both parameters simultaneously from measurements of the reflection coefficient of a test material. Results of two cases as well as a brief discussion of the limitations of the technique are provided in this paper.

SoCs are in general built with embedded IP cores, each of which is procured from different IP providers with no prior information on known-good-yield (KGY). In practice, partial testing is a practical choice for assuring the yield of the product under the stringent time-to-market requirements. Therefore, a proper sampling technique is a key to high confidence testing and cost effectiveness. A real-world laboratory exercise is presented for image processing and related curricula. The exercise is a traffic-monitoring problem in which a truck must be tracked as it moves across a bridge and its velocity measured. Sequential images are taken from a dedicated Web camera that views the Smart Composite Bridge on the University of Missouri-Rolla campus. The prototype bridge is a field laboratory for several interdisciplinary courses, including a Machine Vision elective. As the design and fabrication complexities for the instrumentation-on-silicon systems intensify, optimization of combined Built-In Self-Test (BIST) and Automated Test Equipment (ATE) testing becomes more desirable to meet the required fault-coverage while maintaining acceptable cost overhead. The cost associated with combined BIST/ATE testing of such systems mainly consists of the following; (1) the cost induced by the BIST area overhead and (2) the cost induced by the overall testing time. Electromagnetic interference (EMI) issues are expected to be crucial for next-generation system-on-package (SOP) integrated high-performance digital LSIs and for radio frequency (RF) and analog circuits. Ordinarily in SOPs, high-performance digital LSIs are sources of EMI, while RF and analog circuits are affected by EMI (victims). This paper describes the following aspects of EMI in SOPs: 1) die/package-level EMI; 2) substrate-level EMI; 3) electromagnetic modeling and simulation; and 4) near electromagnetic field measurement. Corrosion pitting defection is a critical issue in the maintenance of aircraft. Near-field microwave nondestructive techniques have been successfully used for defection of corrosion under paint. In this paper a comparison between several different millimeter wave probes is made for the detection and evaluation of corrosion precursor pitting under paint at Ka-band and V-band. Since the pittings investigated here are very small in size, spatial resolution and sensitivity of the probes are critical issues. Evaluation of water distribution and its temporal movement in cement-based materials is important for assessing cement hydration, curing, and long-term performance. From a practical standpoint, it is also important to obtain this information nondestructively. Near-field microwave nondestructive evaluation methods have proven effective for evaluation of cement-based materials for their various mixture properties, including the detection of salt added to the mixing water and chloride ions entering these materials through exposure to salt water solutions.
