Upper Cretaceous Sediment In Montana, Frank J. Frankovich

Cretaceous sediments in Montana record events during a period of unusual geologic interest. After a long period of extensive submergence of the area during Jurassic time, came a period of varying continental and marine deposition with consequent variations in the types of sediments laid down. A study of these variations, their extent, and their cause has been the primary object of this thesis.

The intensive postwar search for new petroleum horizons has resulted in widespread prospecting in the northern Great Plains. No commercial production has as yet been derived from Ordovician or Devonian rocks in Montana, but the relat­ively few tests that have penetrated to critical depths have disclosed encouraging conditions which merit further consider­ation, especially in Devonian strata.

Sometime prior to 1870, a group of prospectors made what was believed to be a "rich strike' on one of the tributaries of Prickly Pear Creek in Jefferson County, Montana. Instead of striking it rich, they had uncovered a native copper deposit, worthless to them because of its limited extent and remote location, but now of much interest to the geologist, and to the mining engineer because of its possible commercial value.

Iron was electro-deposited from a ferrous chloride bath. Studies were made of deposits formed when current density was varied, and fin­ally when both current density and temperature were changed. An attempt was made to lay the ground work for a long range study of the chloride bath, and to determine the most simple conditions possible for obtaining a smooth, even, and thick deposit.

The five counties discussed in this paper compose the northernmost and westernmost counties in Montana. On the eastern boundary are Glacier National Park and the Continental Divide; on the southern boundary are Missoula and Powell counties; Idaho lies on the southwestern and western side; and the Canadian border lies along the northern edge. The region is on the Pacific Ocean side of the Rocky Mountains. Three major rivers, the Clark Fork, the Flathead, and the Kootenai drain this area into the Columbia River.

The purpose of this investigation is to determine the relationship between the pumping of rigid pavements and the modified California Bearing Ratio of the subgrade soil beneath the pavement. Ultimately, the objective is to combine data from this research with those from other related studies and provide a design criteria for eliminating or minimizing, in the most economical way, pumping of rigid pavements, particularly when soils of uncertain quality are encountered.

Early in 1945 a request was made by the Bridge Division of the Kentucky Department of Highways that bond characteristics of certain reinforcing bars be analyzed by the Department's Materials Research Laboratory. Nothing extensive was contemplated, it being the intent of the Bridge Division to determine whether reinforcing steel commonly used on bridge projects at the time should develop bond stresses reasonably close to those that could be developed by the specially prepared bars; and if not, whether the special bars produced benefits commensurate with increased costs.

This research with combined coarse aggregates in cement concrete was initiated at the request of the Director of Design as a direct result of the condition study made by the Division of Design in 1945. In the report on this study it was shown that on the basis of averages pertaining to 80 projects with crushed limestone totalling about 395 miles in length, and 70 projects with Ohio River Gravel totalling approximately 410 miles in length, the service record for pavements with the river gravel was far inferior to that of pavements containing limestone coarse aggregate.

Until the late 1930's, the accepted practice for the construction of drainage installation included the use of a large, approximately No. 2 size, aggregate as porous backfill. However, a lage number of drains ceased to function as result of clogging or "silting"*, and many highway departments practically eliminated sub-surface and intercepting drainage.
