Blown Mulch For Roadside Erosion Control, Jason C. Taylor Oct 1954

Blown Mulch For Roadside Erosion Control, Jason C. Taylor

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

In May 1954, the Division of Construction brought to the attention of the Research Division the fact that an effort was being made (for the first time in Kentucky) to revise the conventional manner of applying straw mulch to a seeded right-of-way. This innovation was to be achieved with the use of a recently-invented machine known as the "Finn Mulch Spreader", which is capable of mixing a straw mulch with some adhesive substance and then blowing the mixture onto the seeded area. The intent was to achieve a reasonably homogeneous mat-like structure composed of pieces of straw attached to each …

Flexural Properties Of Corrugated Metal Roofing, Howard L. Wakeland Aug 1954

Flexural Properties Of Corrugated Metal Roofing, Howard L. Wakeland

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

Introduction Roofing materials that combine shelter, fire safety, durability, and strength have largely replaced such historic types of roofing covering as straw, leaves, tile, bark and various wooden coverings. Thus, we have such modern roof coverings as asphalt composition, cement-asbestos, and metal. Of these, metal roofing is used more than any other on farm service buildings. Approximately 40 per cent of present day farm service buildings in the United States are roofed with metal. This proportion continues to increase as more and more metal roofing materials are made available for rural construction. The wide use of metal roofing is due …

Geology Of The Ragged Point Oil Field Musselshell County, Montana, David M. Amos

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The Ragged Point oil field is located in Northwest Musselshell County, in the Lake Basin field of central Montana, and on the western border of the Great Plains region. The surface topography is that of a plain marked by erosion and moderate folding. The stratigraphy of central Montana shows periodic marine invasions from the Cordilleran trough, with normal marine limestones interbedded with sandstone sand shales. These sediments are over 12,000 feet thick, with the Cretaceous Eagle and Colorado formations exposed at the surface on the Ragged Point anticline. Undifferentiated Cambrian limestones and shales are the oldest rocks encountered in drilling.

Effectiveness Of Evaporation From Ground And Foliage In Reducing Soil Moisture Depletion, Val D. Wynn May 1954

Effectiveness Of Evaporation From Ground And Foliage In Reducing Soil Moisture Depletion, Val D. Wynn

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Field irrigation efficiency is the percentage of the water delivered to the field that becomes available to the crop as soil moisture. The so-called "evaporation losses" from wetted ground and foliage are rather difficult to measure, but are estimated by Christiansen (3) to be between 15 and 30 percent. No doubt part of this may be termed as a "loss," but the other part may be incorrectly termed as such. Many authorities claim that water must pass through the plant before being transpired into the atmosphere to be effectively used.

Evaluation Of Sprinkler Irrigation Systems In Northern Utah, Jay M. Bagley, Wayne D. Criddle

Reports

Summary and Conclusions: Sprinkler irrigation will continue to expand in Utah as well as in other irrigated areas of the world. This method of irrigation is suitable to all farm crops grown in the state and to most soils. It is particularly adapted to steep foothill areas where the water supply can be obtained at higher elevation and pumping is not necessary to develop pressure for the sprinkler systems. Also, much of the irrigated land of the state, particularly along the Wasatch front, is owned and operated by "part-time" farmers. Having the water under complete control and the irrigation schedule …

Horizontal Pressures On Retaining Walls Due To Line Surface Loads, John B. Heagler Jan 1954

Horizontal Pressures On Retaining Walls Due To Line Surface Loads, John B. Heagler

Masters Theses

"Among the oldest types of structures with which engineers have had to deal are those which serve to laterally restrain masses of earth, or to prevent earth embankments from assuming their natural angle of repose. This is necessary where space is limited or the natural slope would encroach upon other property. These structures, usually called retaining walls, are subjected to forces, both lateral and vertical due to the pressures exerted by the backfill material and any loads imposed on the backfill material. The first step in the design of the retaining wall is to determine the magnitude, position, and line …
