This report reviews activities on this project since the Progress Report, Part IV, June 1961.

The summer of 1961 has been one of the driest on record for Ogden Bay and Howard Slough Refuge. The extreme shortage of irrigation water has resulted in very little flow in the Howard Slough which originates from return flow. The available water from the Weber River for the Ogden Bay Refuge was also the lowest on record. The scarcity of water at these two refuges has resulted in increased salinity.

Most of the routine work on the project during the summer was done by …

It has been known for some time that some Western Kentucky bank gravels perform rather poorly as base or shoulder material. In the fall of 1956, the Division of Research participated in the experimental design and evaluation of a group of ten rural highway base stabilization projects. Two of these projects, one in Ballard County and one in Marshall County involved the stabilization of Western Kentucky bank gravels with a bituminous material; AE-200, a mixing-type emulsion, was used.

Studies of fossil and Recent otoliths (sagittae) supply an important line of evidence, bearing on classification of teleost fishes, supplementary to that of anatomy, osteology, and "phylogenetic" paleoichthyology.

Squirrelfishes ( " Holocentridae" of authors) are generalized forms in which evolutionary divergence of some mag nitude is reflected in unpreservable details of anatomy, inconspicuous skeletal structures, and striking differentiation of the sagittae. Otoliths show the holocentroid complex to consist of one homogeneous unit (l\fyripristidae, elevated) and another more heterogeneous group (Holocentridae, restricted). These lineages have been separate. at least since the middle Eocene.

More and more in highway construction, the engineer is faced with the problem of locating satisfactory materials to be used in the construction of highways. This problem has become very critical in the selection of a satisfactory aggregate to be used in many phases of the construction. In large metropolitan areas and in other regions of the United States unblessed with an abundance of this aggregate, it was found that where once there was no shortage of suitable material, the supplies have now been practically exhausted.

In co-operation with the Bureau of Public Roads, a number of reinforced pipe culvert installations in a number of states have been selected to evaluate the effectiveness of the design and construction criteria. One particular pipe has been chosen for this special study because of its installation conditions. This pipe is located on I 75-6 (5) 123 in Scott County at Station 37 + 50, US460, SW Ramp, and has been constructed using both type beddings that are specified in the 1956 edition of the Kentucky Department of Highways Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction and amendments thereto. The major considerations in the evaluation of a slab's condition, where surface defects exist, are the number of defects, their type and size. It is possible for a slab to contain a large number of surface intrusions without being appreciably damaged, if the impairments are all very small. On the other hand, only a few very large defects would be very damaging. Certainly, the most satisfactory condition would be the complete absence of blemishes.

Early in 1960 a study was undertaken by the author to become acquainted with the use and application of digital computers in the structural and civil engineering fields. After several months study and attendance, during the summer of 1960, at a National Science Foundation Institute on the use of digital computers in engineering, it was felt that the study could be expanded and presented in thesis form. The principal benefit from the study, other than the author's, will possibly be the integration into the civil engineering curricula of the material contained in the thesis.

The scope of this thesis encompasses the investigation of the feasibilities of using a locally and/or readily available heavy aggregate for high density concrete. Such an aggregate was found to be available in Socorro, New Mexico. The Socorro Manganese Corporation has a stockpile of over 7,000 tons of high-grade manganese ore (specific gravity = 4.5) potentially suitable as a heavy aggregate, and some of which was used for this research. Along with the manganese ore was used ferrophosphorous, a very heavy aggregate manufacture by the Victor Chemical Works (specific gravity = 6.5), to obtain a range of densities that would …

Tests were made on three different soils, using controlled amounts of Portland cement and water. All tests were made using a standard liquid limit device or a six-inch mold. The variables were amounts of Portland cement, degree and thoroughness of mixing, moisture content, curing and compaction of samples. The recommended procedures for performing the Plastic Limits Test, Liquid Limits Test and the California Bearing Ratio Test were followed with very few exceptions. All values obtained from testing are entered in the report and no retesting was done.

Compressive strengths of pumice-aggregate concrete were examined by introducing controlled variables into the mix proportions. A mix design method is presented, and this method was analyzed for consistency and feasibility.

Experimental Determination Of Dynamic Stress Concentration Factors In Rectangular Steel Bars, Jerome E. Ligocki

Stress concentration factors obtained from impact tests indicate substantial agreement with experimentally derived static stress concentration factors. Testing was limited to one 3/8 diameter centrally located hole in a long rectangular bar 2 inches wide. The hole was located at a bar cross section where a plane wave was found to exist. Stress pulse lengths as short as 50 microseconds duration was used in the experiments.

The experimental results confirm the ability of the resistance strength gage to accurately measure stress pulses. The proper amplitude response of the gage is proven by comparison with dynamic and static test results. The …

The use of water-reducing admixtures in concrete has grown continuously since their introduction over 25 years ago, with a present estimated usage in the production of 25 million cubic yards of concrete annually in the United States alone. Opposition to anything added to concrete, other than cement, aggregates, and water, is gradually disappearing, and considerable recognition is being given to the value of using other ingredients.

Forecasting the annual water supply in an arid area by using the water content of snow on watersheds on some particular date, such as April 1, has become a very useful practice. Although these forecasts have given results of great practical value, they have sometimes been considerably in error. Seeking to minimize error, forecasters have incorporated various additional data such as temperature and antecedent rain to improve the relation between snow measurement and measured runoff.
