Major deposits of natural, bituminous, quartz sandstone (Kentucky Rock Asphalt) occur in six counties of western Kentucky and a few minor deposits occur in eastern Kentucky. Crushed rock asphalt has been used extensively in Kentucky and elsewhere for over 50 years for surfacing roads.* The most productive area was in Edmonson County where the Caseyville and Bee Springs formations were quarried and mined. These deposits have been described as oil-pools which are now defunct and from which only the asphaltic residue remains. The bitumen content of the rock varies locally in a quarry or mine; and, because of this, enormous …

The purpose of this research was to investigate the causes of and determine possible remedies for the rising number of county road accidents in Indiana. County road accidents were defined for the purpose of this study as all traffic accidents occurring on roads which are administered by the County Commissioners in Indiana except accidents occurring at intersections of county roads with state highways. These latter accidents are normally charged to state highways. The information used in this research was obtained from accident records. As requested in your memorandum of September 12, we have conducted an extensive series of tests on the natural sand produced by Kapco Construction Company in Logan County. There was some question regarding the classification of the sand -- whether it would be termed a manufactured, a crushed conglomerate, or a natural sand. I had Mr. George R. On September 19, 1962, a sample of sand produced by the Kapco Construction Company was received by the Research Division. This material was sampled at the quarry in Logan County and forwarded to the Research Division by personnel from District No. 3 of the Bowling Green Office. The sample was submitted for laboratory evaluation in regard to possible use of the material as fine aggregate in Class A concrete.

Patching pot-holes and resurfacing small areas of pavement entail certain compaction-equipment difficulties for the maintenance crews. Areas in need of repair are often small but may be widely scattered. Large steel-wheeled rollers are difficult to transport from one location to another and tend to bridge across small, deep pot-holes. The bridging effect can be reduced by use of small rollers or pneumatictired rollers, which conform better to the area to be patched. The efficiency of a patching crew depends greatly upon its mobility. The compaction equipment, therefore, should be portable, should conform to the area to be repaired, and should …

This paint is considered to be compatible with undercoat paints currently covered by Special Specification No. 14-56b and may be substituted for the green finish-coat, Para. IV, therein, when so indicated by appropriate notations on the plans, proposals, invitations, etc. This paint may be used for either new or re-paint work on bridges, guard rails, and other steel structures as may be designated. It is the objective of this thesis to investigate the feasibility of a multistoried structural concept in which the principal structural elements are hollow girders and chambered hollow columns. The scope will be directed towards the general conceptions, assumptions and design procedures for the system. Only such specific design of a particular example will be accomplished as is necessary to provide correlation and justification for the general assumptions. A detailed investigation and design is not intended since this thesis is oriented towards establishing a general concept not merely a particular example.

Attached are three copies each of two laboratory reports covering tests on a 50 lb. sample of processed Kentucky rock asphalt forwarded to our laboratory by Mr. C. H. McKinney. The sample arrived June 6. These reports include results of laboratory analysis and evaluation tests - and small scale road tests - to determine the proper amount of tar to be added to the processed material to produce a satisfactory road surfacing mixture.

The Research Division assisted the District Construction personnel with structural repairs of five areas of cement concrete pavement that had been adjudged unsatisfactory. I had an opportunity to observe the repaired areas on July 19, 1962, and they all appear to be performing. adequately. The color of the epoxy patching material does not completely match the adjacent concrete but with normal weathering the two materials should approach a better match.

Preliminary findings of a study of sediment transport in streams with high concentrations of suspended fine sediment indicate that for Rio Puerco near Bernardo, New Mexico the velocity varies logarithmically with depth, and the concentration distribution for several size classes of sand may be described by a conventional distribution equation if the fall velocity of the sand is corrected for the influence of the fine sediment. A corrected fall velocity, empirically defined for a temperature of 24°C and for concentrations up to about 150,000 ppm, is given.

All single crystals have a particular habit or morphology. The crystal habit refers to the relative degree of development of crystallographic planes into surfaces which make up the external appearance of the single crystal.

In this paper, NaClO3 is used as a parent crystal. Its simple cubic habit is modified to tetrahedral by the use of impurities of SO4=, S2O3=, Cr2O7=, and NO3-. The degree of habit change is studied as a function of impurity concentration and temperature. The problem and phenomena are explained in terms of surface chemistry and thermodynamics.

Following a review of sixteenth century metallurgical literature and a discussion of Gibbs free energy, this thesis discusses thermodynamic considerations of galena (PbS) reduction by iron from a lead assay of this period. The importance of fluxes in this assay is emphasized. The discussion covers both equilibrium and non-equilibrium conditions at 1100 degrees Celsius. Possible substitutes for iron are also covered.

Information from twenty-one small controlled lead assays is correlated with the thermodynamic discussion to determine the purpose of each constituent in the assay.
