Evaluation Of Raised Pavement Markers, Jerry G. Pigman, Kenneth R. Agent, Rolands L. Rizenbergs
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the operational applicability of raised pavement markers and to determine their effectiveness with respect to brightness and durability. Seven different types of markers were evaluated. The primary application of markers in this study was as a supplement to lane lines. They were also used as a traffic control measure at lane drops, as delineation for hazardous curves, and as directional arrows.
Luminosity and durability were monitored for approximately one year. It was found that raised pavement markers can be a very effective method of roadway delineation. Markers evaluated had varying levels of …

At-Grade Intersections Versus Grade-Separated Interchanges (An Economic Analysis Of Several Bypasses), Kenneth R. Agent
At-Grade Intersections Versus Grade-Separated Interchanges (An Economic Analysis Of Several Bypasses), Kenneth R. Agent
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
In an effort to reduce traffic in central business districts, bypasses have been built to provide through traffic a circumferential route and also to ease the burden of traffic in downtown areas. In many cases, though, bypasses have created a serious accident potential because they were built with at-grade intersections and no access control. This has led to commercial developments along the bypass and congestion at major intersections. When congestion increases at an intersection, traffic signals must be installed; this increases vehicle operating and time costs and creates a rear-end collision potential. In some cases, the bypass circumvents a relatively …

Engineering Data System For Bedrock Occurrences And Properties, D. J. Hagerty, Robert C. Deen, M. W. Palmer, C. D. Tockstein
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
The initial work plan included the development of a classification system based on index tests. An investigation of previous works in classification of rock on the basis of index tests showed that a variety of classification systems utilizing many different index tests had been developed. However, this survey showed that no generally applicable system had been developed and that little communication had been established between field investigators, facility designers, and those in charge of construction and maintenance of facilities. Therefore, the initial plan for work was modified to include the development of a comprehensive methodology for evaluation of rock. The …
Pedestrian Accidents In Kentucky: 1972-1973, Charles V. Zegeer
Pedestrian Accidents In Kentucky: 1972-1973, Charles V. Zegeer
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
Pedestrian accident data in Kentucky were analyzed for 1972 and 1973 on a rural, urban, and statewide basis. Results showed that about 1500 pedestrian accidents occur in Kentucky each year and cost over $11 million. About 30 percent of pedestrian accidents in rural areas and 4 percent in urban areas are fatal. Although about 78 percent of Kentucky's pedestrian accidents occur in urban areas, over 62 percent of the pedestrian fatalities occur in rural areas.
Specific characteristics of pedestrian accidents were identified and related to human, environmental, and time factors. Highway and street improvements and safety programs generally considered to …
Vehicle Noise Survey In Kentucky, Kenneth R. Agent, Rolands L. Rizenbergs
Vehicle Noise Survey In Kentucky, Kenneth R. Agent, Rolands L. Rizenbergs
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
Individual noise measurements were obtained on 10,500 motor vehicles operating on Kentucky highways. The roadways were selected to represent varied geometric and environmental conditions and posted speed limits. Percentages of automobiles and trucks exceeding a given level of noise were determined. As expected, noise levels of trucks were significantly higher than for automobiles, and larger trucks produced higher noise levels than smaller trucks. For any vehicle type, noise increased with an increase in speed limit.

Temperature Distributions In Asphaltic Concrete Pavements, Herbert F. Southgate, Robert C. Deen
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
The straight-line relationship between temperatures at a given depth and the surface temperatures combined with 5-day average air temperatures appears to be as valid for upper New York state and Arizona as for Maryland. The main differences were in the annual ranges and annual mean temperatures. The concept for estimating pavement temperature distributions appears to be valid and may be used with confidence for estimating pavement temperatures at all latitudes and longitudes.

Effect Of Pavement Texture On Traffic Noise, Kenneth R. Agent, Charles V. Zegeer
Effect Of Pavement Texture On Traffic Noise, Kenneth R. Agent, Charles V. Zegeer
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
Tire noise is one of the primary sources of highway noise, particularly at high speeds. Different types of road surfaces generate different noise levels. Noise data were collected on eight different surface types found in Kentucky. Noise measurements were made using a reference car, and noise recordings were obtained from the traffic stream. A reference truck was used for one test. It was found that portland cement concrete; Class I, Type A and A(Modified) bituminous concrete; chip seals; and open-graded, plant-mix seals were more or less "normal" surfaces in regard to generated noise. Sand-asphalt and Kentucky rock asphalt surfaces were …

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)
INTRODUCTION The results of the first phase of an experimental investigation are presented in this report. The objective of this investigation is to study the applicability of a theoretical approach developed at Cornell and implemented in a computer program developed by T. Pekoz for Diaphragm Braced Channel and Z-Section Purlins. In this phase of the experimental program three "full-scale" assemblies were tested under simulated wind-uplift loading. In addition, several supplementary tests were carried out to determine various physical parameters utilized in the analytical solution. The reported results are restricted to those tests that have direct bearing on correlating the test …
Deflection Behavior Of Asphaltic Concrete Pavements, Herbert F. Southgate, Robert C. Deen
Deflection Behavior Of Asphaltic Concrete Pavements, Herbert F. Southgate, Robert C. Deen
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
Deflection responses of a series of experimental test sections were obtained layer by layer during construction, upon completion of construction, and subsequent to construction. Deflections were obtained by use of Benkelman beams, the Road Rater, and the Dynaflect. Test results from one location within each test section were analyzed to determine which relationships were, or were not, meaningful. This was done as a pilot study and as a preliminary step toward final analysis of the data bank. The analyses are presented in this report.

A Field Technique Measuring Virus Decay And Potential Aerosol Hazard From Wastewater Sprinkler Irrigation, Michael F. Torpy, Robert A. Gearheart, J. Clifton Spendlove, Rex S. Spendlove
Reports
The increased use of domestic wastewater for irrigation purposes has stimulated a growing practice of sprinkler irrigating from oxidation ponds and other domestic wastewaters. Aerosols generated from these sprinkler irrigation systems may contain potentially hazardous pathogens. Subsequently, the aerosols can contain infective viruses which can be carried through the air to surrounding populations. Thus, a public health hazard can be created by sprinkler irrigating domestic wastewater. This study is an investigation of a means by which the virus decay rate of viruses in aerosols and the potentials hazard of sprinkler irrigation aerosol clouds may be examined. A means of injection …

Reports
Sixteen sediment-water microcosms designed to allow complete gas, liquid, and solid mass balances of gases, nutrients, and mercury were studies under dark conditions or varying light intensity for a period of 189 days. Results indicated that the microcosm technique is a very sensitive method of analyzing microbial dynamics in sediment water systems. Gas quantity and composition changes were easy to monitor and were especially sensitive to light and nutrient variations. Nitrogen fixation occurred in all lighted systems (blue-green algae nitrogen fixers, Anabaena, and others) and was adequate to insure that no nitrogen limitation occurred even though nitrogen limitation was imposed …
A Water-Land Use Management Model For The Sevier River Basin, V. A. Narasimhan, Eugene K. Israelsen
A Water-Land Use Management Model For The Sevier River Basin, V. A. Narasimhan, Eugene K. Israelsen
Reports
A hydrologic model for the Sevier River Basin above Sevier Bridge Reservoir was developed. The model considers large space increments on a monthly time increment. Additional data would improve the reliability of the model developed for some subbasins. A daily hydrologic model was also calibrated to the Circle Valley Subbasin. Data requirements for a daily model using small space increments seems to negate the possibility of the micro-model, for the present at least.

Modeling Phytoplankton Blooms In A Stratified Embayment, William J. Grenney
Modeling Phytoplankton Blooms In A Stratified Embayment, William J. Grenney
Reports
A mathematical model was developed to simulate the nitrogen limited growth dynamics of phytoplankton in a stratefied embayment. The representation of biological growth dynamics includes consideration of intracellular nutrient storage as well as the effects of temperature and light intensity. Several competing species can be represented simultaneously. Model hydrodynamics represent the effects of vertical mixing in the water column on the physical distribution of nutrients and phytoplankton. Sinking velocities of the cells are also included. The model was applied to Auke Bay, Alaska, and model responses are compared to data observed during the spring and summer of 1967.

Regional Development: An Econometric Study Of The Role Of Water Development In Effectuating Population And Income Changes, Herbert H. Fullerton, Chris W. Lewis, Jay C. Andersen, John E. Keith, Reed Willis
Reports
Twelve measures of regional economic growth, including populations and three measures of income were compared for areas with and without water investment in 246 counties and 42 water resources subareas in the states of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, and Nevada. Simple mean omparisons for these measures compiled for the decades of 1940-1950, 1950-1960, and 1960-1970 failed to support the hypothesis that economic growth of those counties and subareas receiving water investment was significantly highter than in those areas which did not, with the possible exception of the 1940-1950 decade. This result is obciously tempered by the fact …

Urban Storm Runoff Inlet Hydrograph Study Volume 3: Hydrologic Data For Two Urban Highway Watersheds In The Salt Lake City Area, Utah, Joel E. Fletcher, Cheng-Lung Chen
Reports
The main objective of this study is to develop an accurate design method for computing inlet hydrographs of surface runoff, with average recurrence intervals of 10, 25, and 50 years, from typical urban highway by flood routing technique. Hydrologic data such as the rainfall intensity, runoff flow rate, air temperature, wind velocity, and soil moisture content were collected during rainfall seasons in 1972 and 1973 on two urban highway watersheds in the Salt Lake City area, Utah. These data were used in the verification of a mathematical model simulating the surface runoff from such highway watersheds. The difficulties and inherent …
