Mixed Integer Programming Models For Water Resources Management, Brad A. Finney, William J. Grenney, A. Bruce Bishop, Trevor C. Hughes Jan 1977

Mixed Integer Programming Models For Water Resources Management, Brad A. Finney, William J. Grenney, A. Bruce Bishop, Trevor C. Hughes

Reports

A regional water quality control model is developed by linking a steady-state water quality simulation model with an optimization model. The water quality simulation model can be applied to complex river systems with both point and nonpoint loads using multiple interdependent pollution parameters described by either linear or nonlinear equations. Twelve water quality parameters can be modeled simultaneously: four non conservative constituents (or conservative constituents if the decay rate is set equal to zero); coliform bacteria (MPN); phosphorus; biochemical oxygen demand (BOD); ammonia (NH3); nitrate (NO3); dissolved oxygen (DO); temperature (°C); and algae. The water quality model is used to …

Effects Of Soil Heterogeneity On One-Dimensional Infiltration, Charles Courette, Roland W. Jeppson Jan 1977

Effects Of Soil Heterogeneity On One-Dimensional Infiltration, Charles Courette, Roland W. Jeppson

Reports

A parameter study for heterogeneous infiltration was performed employing a one-dimensional computer program. Soil heterogeneity was defined by linear variations of soil parameters. From the solutions obtained, the instantaneous and accumulative infiltration rates were correlated versus the rate in which the parameters varied in the soil profile. The end result being coaxial graphs from which a relative infiltration rate may be obtained by inputting time and the rates of change of various soil parameters.

Estimation Theory Applied To River Water Quality Modeling, David S. Bowles, William J. Grenney, J. Paul Riley Jan 1977

Estimation Theory Applied To River Water Quality Modeling, David S. Bowles, William J. Grenney, J. Paul Riley

Reports

The extended Kalman filter (EKF) is used to represent BOD, DO, and nitrogen cycling in a 36.4 miles (58.6 km) stretch in the Jordan River, Utah, under the assumption of steady-state conditions. Approximate minimum variance estimates of the water quality parameters are provided by the EKF filter. These estimates are obtained through a combination of two independent estimates of the state of the river water quality system: (1) predictions of the system state from a "phenomenologically meaningful" process model of the biochemical and stream transport processes; and (2) measurements of the water quality parameters. These two estimates are combined by …

Upgrading Aerated Lagoon Effluent With Intermittent Sand Filtration, Richard P. Bishop, James H. Reynolds, Daniel S. Filip, E. Joe Middlebrooks Jan 1977

Upgrading Aerated Lagoon Effluent With Intermittent Sand Filtration, Richard P. Bishop, James H. Reynolds, Daniel S. Filip, E. Joe Middlebrooks

Reports

Intermittent sand filtration was evaluated as a means of upgrading the quality of aerated lagoon effluents to satisfy the requirements of PL 92-500. The aerated lagoon in question treats the wastes from a milk and cheese factory located in northern Utah. The treatment system consists of two diffused air aeration ponds followed by a facultative settling pond, were applied to pilot scale intermittent sand filters with 0.17 mm and 0.40 mm effective size sands. The filters were loaded hydraulically from 0.25 million gallons per acre per day to 1.0 million gallons per acre per day. It was found that sand …

Environmental Quality Management In A Region With External Development Pressures, A. Bruce Bishop, Rangesan Narayanan, Lloyd E. Peterson, Roger D. Hansen, Matthew B. Conover

Reports

The objective of this study was to examine the problems of managing residuals and environmental quality in a region facing potentially rapid growth as a consequence of externally made development decisions. The research adapted and applied the residuals environmental management concept which recognizes the need for an integration of physical methods, implementation incentives and institutional arrangements in controlling air, water and solid residuals. The area selected for study, the Uintah Basin in Southeastern utah, has the potential for extensive energy resource and mineral development and could experience a large population influx and accelerated economic growth as a result. in the …

Stiffness Of Solid-Liquid Mixtures: Theoretical Considerations, David L. Allen Jan 1977

Stiffness Of Solid-Liquid Mixtures: Theoretical Considerations, David L. Allen

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

A rational approach to the solution of the stiffness of solid-liquid mixtures is presented. The stiffness of such mixtures is dependent on the stiffness of the viscous medium and the volume concentration and elastic modulus of the solid portion. Finally, the general solution is applied, in particular, to bitumen-aggregate mixtures; and the results are compared to experimental data.

Surface Dynamics Profilometer And Quarter-Car Simulator: Description, Evaluation, And Adaptation, James L. Burchett, Rolands L. Rizenbergs, Thomas A. Moore

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

A Surface Dynamics Profilometer was acquired in December 1968. The SD Profilometer was designed to rapidly and accurately measure the profile of the surface over which it is driven. A Quarter-Car Simulator was obtained in 1970. The simulator, a special purpose analog computer, was designed to process road profiles measured with the SD Profilometer. This processing involves analog simulation of a simplified vehicle. Factors and variables associated with the devices and calibration and test procedures were investigated and standardized. The Automatic Roughness-Measuring System using an automobile (Kentucky interim standard method of test for roughness) was correlated with the SD Profllometer …

Dynamic Pullout Resistance Of Anchors Buried In Dry Sand, Chris John Veesaert Jan 1977

Dynamic Pullout Resistance Of Anchors Buried In Dry Sand, Chris John Veesaert

Masters Theses

"The vertical pullout resistance of buried anchors subjected to dynamic loading was investigated by means of a laboratory model study. A dry uniformly graded sand, compacted by vibration to 92% of its relative density, was used as the test medium. Tests were performed in a 24-inch square tank using 3.0 and 5.0-inch diameter half and full-anchors. The anchors were tested at depths ranging from 5.0 to 21.0 inches.

It was assumed that the dynamic failure mechanism of earth anchors was the same as the static failure mode, and not distinct behavior. Thus static tests, i.e., tests using a constant strain …

Removal Of Organic Chemical Contaminants By Granular Activated Carbon., Garry Reinhold Aronberg Jan 1977

Removal Of Organic Chemical Contaminants By Granular Activated Carbon., Garry Reinhold Aronberg

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the effectiveness of GAC* filtration in removing organic chemical contaminants from drinking water, and to determine whether the T.O. No. of the treated water could aid in the routine monitoring of the GAC filters.

Two pilot filters containing 18-in. (45.7-cm) deep GAC beds were installed at water treatment plants in Jefferson City and St. Louis County, MO; both plants treated Missouri River water. A bituminous coal-base (large surface area, small pore volume) and 2 lignite coal-base (small surface area, large pore volume) carbons were tested at 2 and 5 gpm/sq ft (81.4 …

Design Standards For Farm Surface Water Supplies, J L. Frith Jan 1977

Design Standards For Farm Surface Water Supplies, J L. Frith

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Design is usually concerned with getting adequate return from limited recources. Farm dams which dry up represent dam failure. Less seriously, so too do dams which, although not drying out, never fill; they waste a recource.

Thermal Response Of A Composite Bridge Structure, David John Wisch Jan 1977

Thermal Response Of A Composite Bridge Structure, David John Wisch

Masters Theses

"This experimental investigation was conducted as an intermediate study to verify and substantiate a prior theoretical study for possible utilization toward development of rational bridge design criteria. The objectives of the study were to construct and instrument a 15 ft - 15 ft (4.6 m- 4.6 m) two-span, composite design, laboratory structure, to subject the structure to thermal loading, and to correlate the experimental temperature distributions, strain distributions, and deflections with those obtained from the theoretical study. Infrared heat lamps were used to obtain steady-state thermal loading.

Three theoretical cases were considered for strain calculations: a) both the slab and …
