Civil Engineering Applications Of Acoustic Emission, Theodore Hopwood Ii Feb 1987

Civil Engineering Applications Of Acoustic Emission, Theodore Hopwood Ii

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

In 1939, a suspension bridge at Portsmouth, Ohio, experienced stress-corrosion cracking of the main-cable wires at anchorage points located at each end of the bridge. Watchmen were placed in the anchor chambers where the fractures had been detected. Subsequently, they reported hearing the sounds of further wire breakage on quiet nights. When this was reported, a decision was made to recable the bridge (1). That was one of the earliest documented instances of the use of the acoustic emission phenomena in a structural application.

Also, in the late 1930's, L. Obert and W. I. Duval at the U. S. Bureau …

Steady-State Operation Of Bench-Scale Activated Sludge Process Using Phenol And 2-Chlorophenol As Substrates, Jeffrey Richard Caputi Jan 1987

Steady-State Operation Of Bench-Scale Activated Sludge Process Using Phenol And 2-Chlorophenol As Substrates, Jeffrey Richard Caputi

Theses

Experiments were conducted to determine whether a continuous process similar to the common activated sludge process could be operated at a relative steady state with phenol and 2-chlorophenol as the sole carbon sources. After a number of unsuccessful trials, process conditions were developed which allowed for operation at a relative steady state with respect to the concentration of microorganisms in the reactor and the concentration of phenol and 2-chlorophenol in the effluent.

Phenol and 2-chlorophenol were removed at better than 99 percent efficiency on a continuous basis. The mixed liquor grown under the conditions of the experiment was highly filamentous …

Bioconcentration Of Heavy Metals (Cu, Cr, Pb, And Zn) In The Missouri River Near Sioux City, Iowa, Robert Conklin, Suzie Galles, Edward Shane, Rod Tondreau Jan 1987

Bioconcentration Of Heavy Metals (Cu, Cr, Pb, And Zn) In The Missouri River Near Sioux City, Iowa, Robert Conklin, Suzie Galles, Edward Shane, Rod Tondreau

United States Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District

The concentrations of the heavy metals- copper, chromium, lead, zinc- in the biota of the Missouri River were measured at a control site upstream of Sioux City and at a site downstream of the city. Bioconcentration factors for each of the metals were calculated for fish, periphyton, and invertebrates, and the concentrations of metals in the river sediments were measured.

Concentrations of the same metals were measured in the sediment, water, periphyton, invertebrates, zooplankton, and fish of Snyder's Bend Lake. Bioconcentration factors were calculated for each of the biological communities and were found to be very similar to those found …

Seepage Interceptor Drains And Topsoil Salinity, T R. Negus Jan 1987

Seepage Interceptor Drains And Topsoil Salinity, T R. Negus

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The Department of Agriculture established 121 trials in its Narrogin advisory district starting in 1972 to measure the effect of bulldozer and grader built seepage interceptor banks and drains on the topsoil salinity of the land downslope of them.

After 14 years of moniterin, there was no evidence that seepage interceptor drains and banks reduced the top soil salinity on 10 of the 11 sites in the Pingelly, Brookton and Wickepin Shires.

Mogumber Drainage Works Succeed, L K. Lenane Jan 1987

Mogumber Drainage Works Succeed, L K. Lenane

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The loss of arable farmland from soil erosion, waterlogging and salinity is a severe problem on some Western Australian farms.

When the arable land comprises only 40 per cent of the total area within the Mogumber Soil Conservation District, this loss is a real cause for concern. So too is the resulting damage to roads, siltation of railway culverts, and deaths of roadside trees from rising saline watertables.

However, drainage, contour and other works undertaken by the Mogumber Soil Conservation District have halted this degredation. Badly eroded areas that were fenced off now have a satisfactory ground cover. A wheat …

A 24-Hour Rainfall Distribution And Peak Rate Factors For Use In Southwest Florida, Geoffrey S. Dendy Jan 1987

A 24-Hour Rainfall Distribution And Peak Rate Factors For Use In Southwest Florida, Geoffrey S. Dendy

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The objectives of this research were to derive a design 24-hour duration rainfall distribution for use in southwest Florida, and peak rate factors for use in the Soil Conservation Service (SCS) unit hydrograph method for two watersheds, also in the southwest Florida area. The rainfall distribution is derived by applying a least squares polynomial curve fitting technique to National Weather Service hourly rainfall data collected in the study area. The screening criteria for data included in the curve fitting procedure are: storm duration of 18 to 26 hours, at least three inches of rainfall volume, and peak intensity period falling …

Bridge Decks And Overlays, James H. Havens, Theodore Hopwood Ii, Edgar E. Courtney Jan 1987

Bridge Decks And Overlays, James H. Havens, Theodore Hopwood Ii, Edgar E. Courtney

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The report presents a historical perspective of the Transportation Cabinet's bridge deck construction and maintenance efforts directed toward increasing bridge deck durability.

Bridge decks crack in specific patterns that primarily depend upon bridge designs. Normal deck cracking is due to load-induced and thermal effects. Each type of cracking has a distinct pattern.

One-hundred and nineteen experimental bridge deck overlays were inspected. Included were 9 membrane bridges, 87 latex concrete overlays and 23 low-slump overlays. The overlays had been placed originally on both new and existing bridge decks on various routes throughout the state. Most of the overlays were rated in …

Automated Data Acquisition For Low-Volume Road Inventory And Management, Theodore Hopwood Ii, Gary W. Sharpe, John W. Hutchinson, Robert C. Deen Jan 1987

Automated Data Acquisition For Low-Volume Road Inventory And Management, Theodore Hopwood Ii, Gary W. Sharpe, John W. Hutchinson, Robert C. Deen

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Local governments need suitable inventories and condition surveys to accurately determine and prioritize their funding needs. An efficient method of performing an inventory of the roads and subsequently determining the condition of major system components is to use an automated data-acquisition system to measure and record essential data. The data may be collected and processed by a central inventory management group. The inventory should include pavement characteristics, roadway geometries, and roadside features. Pavement condition may include structural integrity, road roughness, and skid resistance. Roadway geometries include horizontal curvature, length, width, superelevation, and grade. Roadside features include signing, intersections, guardrails, and …

Evaluation Of 1985 Aashto Flexible Pavement Design Equations And Nomographs, Herbert F. Southgate, Gary W. Sharpe, Robert C. Deen

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The 1985 AASHTO nomograph and equations for flexible pavements were reviewed and analyzed to determine requirements for input data, sensitivity of designs based on the additional variables for percent reliability, standard deviation, and resilient modulus of subgrade material. Design thicknesses using the 1985 AASHTO Guide were compared to thicknesses using the 1981 Kentucky thickness design method for flexible pavements.

Optimization Of Richardson's Shale Durability Rating System, John Dell Long

Masters Theses

"The two-cycle sieved slake durability test, performed on specimens initially oven-dried prior to testing, was determined to be the optimum slake durability testing procedure based on 12 variations of the test performed on 12 different shale types. The effects of changing slake durability testing variables was also studied.

Standard Proctor moisture-density and compaction-degradation tests were performed on 11 shales.

A modified version of the ultrasonic cavitation disaggregation test was developed and performed on 14 shales.

Richardson's shale durability rating equation was modified to include or reflect a data base of 14 shales, the results of the 20-min. ultrasonic cavitation disaggregation …
