Benzene Losses From Aqueous Solutions During Geotechnical Laboratory Testing, Konstadinos Vogiatzis May 1987

Benzene Losses From Aqueous Solutions During Geotechnical Laboratory Testing, Konstadinos Vogiatzis

Theses

This study addressed the problem of using volatile organics in geotechnical laboratory tests. Previous experiments with volatile organics such as benzene and trichloroethylene with soils had shown significant concentration losses during the tests. The purpose of the study was to identify the sources of loss and to quantify the magnitude of loss.

Vapor - liquid equilibrium was used to predict theoretical evaporation losses of benzene from aqueous solutions. Calculations were made for both an infinite volume of air and for a finite volume. Experiments were then performed to verify the theoretical predictions.

Other losses considered were those during solution preparation, …

Groundwater Contamination Studies At A Sanitary Landfill In New Jersey, Yau-Chorng Chien May 1987

Groundwater Contamination Studies At A Sanitary Landfill In New Jersey, Yau-Chorng Chien

Theses

Edgeboro Landfill, a site used for the disposal of municipal and industrial refuse, is one of the largest landfills in New Jersey. The landfill has been in operation since 1954, serving the solid waste disposal needs of local townships and a major portion of Middlessex and the surrounding counties. The landfill was not equipped with a liner and a leachate collection system at the time of start up. The leachate collection line around the landfill, on-site leachate treatment by three stabilization ponds and subsurface cut-off wall were provided to minimize the discharge of leachate into adjacent waters in 1979. Groundwater …

Evaluation And Application Of Roadway Marking Materials, Kenneth R. Agent, Jerry G. Pigman May 1987

Evaluation And Application Of Roadway Marking Materials, Kenneth R. Agent, Jerry G. Pigman

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Three different areas of roadway delineation were included in this study. These areas were:

  1. Lane delineation materials,
  2. crosswalk delineation materials, and
  3. snowplowable markers.

Evaluation of lane delineation materials revealed that expanded use was warranted for polyester paint and extruded thermoplastic. The alkyd-resin extruded thermoplastic material was determined to be the most cost-effective material for crosswalk and stop bar installations. Durability and reflectivity results show that Stimsonite 96 markers have performed effectively as snowplowable markers while the recessed markers have performed effectively except on certain interstate locations.

Construction of the Nicholasville Bypass (US 27) was completed in 1986. At the north end of the bypass is a raised, paved traffic median (Figures 1 and 2). The median was constructed with a lip curb and gutter. The roadway at that location is in a superelevated section. A raised, paved traffic median also is located at the southern end of the bypass, Figures 3 through 5 are photographs of that median. The median is located on a tangent section therefore, the roadway has a normal crown. The section of roadway at the southern end is located on a slight …

Performance And Design Of Labyrinth Spillway, Nosratollah Amanian May 1987

Performance And Design Of Labyrinth Spillway, Nosratollah Amanian

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In recent years, the general interest in the safety of dams and reservoirs has grown appreciably. This research describes the application and design of labyrinth weirs to improve the performance of existing reservoirs and also to be used for the construction of new dams. The parameters that can affect the performance of labyrinth weirs are discussed. Tests were conducted on normal linear weirs with four different crest shapes to determine the rate of change of discharge coefficient when each type of weir is used. It is found that weirs with rounded-crest shape can pass more flow than other types of …

An Application Of The Finite Element Method And Two Equation (K And E) Turbulence Model To Two And Three Dimensional Fluid Flow Problems Governed By The Navier-Stokes Equations, John I. Finnie May 1987

An Application Of The Finite Element Method And Two Equation (K And E) Turbulence Model To Two And Three Dimensional Fluid Flow Problems Governed By The Navier-Stokes Equations, John I. Finnie

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Finite Element computer codes in two and three dimensions were written that solve both laminar and turbulent flow. These codes use the two equation (k and E) turbulence model to evaluate turbulent viscosity. They were tested with 29 different flow problems. The largest two dimensional turbulent problem solved is flow under a sluice gate. A three dimensional vortex flow problem was attempted but was not feasible due to the size of the available computer. The Harwell sparse matrix subroutines of the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority were used to solve the set of simultaneous equations. The performance of these subroutines …

Finite Element Analysis Of Water Flow In Variably Saturated Soils, Jagath J. Kaluarachchi, J. C. Parker Apr 1987

Finite Element Analysis Of Water Flow In Variably Saturated Soils, Jagath J. Kaluarachchi, J. C. Parker

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

A two-dimensional Galerkin finite element model for water flow in variably saturated soil is presented. A fourth-order Runge-Kutta time integration method is employed which allows use of time steps at least 2 times greater than for a traditional finite difference approximation of time derivatives. For short total simulation times computer execution costs for the Runge-Kutta method are greater than for the finite difference approximation due to the start up cost of the Runge-Kutta method, but for longer simulation times the Runge-Kutta method requires considerably less computational effort even when automatic time-step adjustment is used with the finite difference procedure. A …

Acoustic Emission Monitoring Of Bascule Bridge Components, Theodore Hopwood Ii Mar 1987

Acoustic Emission Monitoring Of Bascule Bridge Components, Theodore Hopwood Ii

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

During September 4-16, 1986, Kentucky Transportation Research Program (KTRP) personnel conducted a two-week inspection of welding operations on bascule bridge components for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT). Welding was performed by the Phoenix Steel Company at Eau Clair, Wisconsin. The inspection was conducted using acoustic emission (AE) monitoring on in-process welds.

KTRP investigative experience with AE weld monitoring and testing of bridges began in 1973. Since that date, KTRP has performed nine series of laboratory and fabrication shop weld monitoring tests and conducted 20 field tests of bridges using a series of increasingly sophisticated AE devices. Over the past …

Minimum thicknesses were determined on the basis of performance and review of literature.

Traffic Control And Accidents At Rural, High-Speed Intersections, Kenneth R. Agent Mar 1987

Traffic Control And Accidents At Rural, High-Speed Intersections, Kenneth R. Agent

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The site characteristics, traffic control used, and accidents occurring at 65 rural, high-speed intersections were summarized. The differences resulting when the right of way is controlled by stop signs versus a traffic signal are discussed. The factors contributing to the accidents as well as the characteristics of the accidents were analyzed. The data obtained at each intersection were summarized and recommendations, which could be used as a guide for implementing changes at other similar intersections, were made for the study locations. The accident analysis shows that providing the driver adequate warning of the intersection is of primary importance for this …

Summary Of Experimental Bridge Features, Theodore Hopwood Ii, James H. Havens, Edgar E. Courtney Mar 1987

Summary Of Experimental Bridge Features, Theodore Hopwood Ii, James H. Havens, Edgar E. Courtney

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Experimental bridge features and service problems investigated during this study are reviewed. Those were epoxy-coated reinforcing steel, stay-in-place forms, experimental deck features (rotary compaction and broomed deck finishing), precast segmental bridges, steel-corrosion control methods (weathering steel and hot-dipped galvanizing), microsilica concrete, failures of masonry coatings, and failures of aluminum guardrail-retaining nuts.

Several features including latex and low-slump overlays, epoxycoated reinforcing steel, and broomed deck finishes (for state-built bridges), are now in common use. Most of the other experimental bridge features were performing satisfactorily. A corrosion problem was observed on one weathering steel bridge. Analyses of failures of masonry coatings and …
