Evaluation Of Edge Drains On Pennyrile Parkway Webster County, L. John Fleckenstein, David L. Allen
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
This report documents findings of the investigation of pipe edge drains and outlets on the Pennyrile Parkway from Milepost 60.476 to Milepost 65.305 in Webster County. The study was initiated due to concerns from District 2 personnel that possible failures in the edge drains were causing pavement distress along the right wheel path. Findings from this study indicated that approximately 40 percent of the 123 edge drain outlets were less than 50 to 60 percent open. The round perforated pipe edge drain appeared to be in excellent condition, including the integrity of the pipe and the filter material. The sand …

A Spatially-Distributed Hydrologic Model For A Small Arid Mountain Watershed, Thomas H. Jackson, David G. Tarboton, Keith R. Cooley
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
A distributed water balance model was developed as a part of an intensive-field study to simulate the snowmelt-driven hydrologic response of a small mountain watershed using measured values of solar radiation, wind speed, air temperature, relative humidity and precipitation as input.
Snowmelt and evapotranspiration were modeled with point energy balances, written in terms of the snow surface and soil surface temperatures, respectively, corrected for local topographic characteristics and snow drifting. Meltwater was routed to the basin outlet as topography-driven, saturated subsurface flow, with all flow in excess of local transmissivity taken as surface runoff.
The model was calibrated with 1985-6 …

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
This document contains the findings and recommendations of the Technical Review and Evaluation Team (TRET) for the plume containment project at the Massachusetts Military Reservation (MMR). The findings and recommendations are in response to the 60 Percent Plume Containment Design, submitted by Operational Technologies (OpTech) in January 1996. In short, the TRET recommends the MMR depart substantially from the strategy of simultaneous, 100 percent containment and treatment that was assigned to OpTech for design in accordance with the Record of Decision (ROD) for Interim Action. This strategy guided the course of the plume containment project over the past two years
Discharge Coefficient Scale Effects Analysis For Weirs, Michael Clyde Johnson
Discharge Coefficient Scale Effects Analysis For Weirs, Michael Clyde Johnson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Much work has been published regarding discharge coefficients for various weir structures. What has not been published to the same extent are the effects of model scale associated with the weirs being studied. If laboratory weirs are too small, scale effects can affect the magnitude of the discharge coefficient. These errors may be significant if the weir serves as a control structure for an emergency spillway. It is imperative that discharge be accurately predicted to enable safe design and operation.
Numerical and physical means were employed to analyze the effects of scale associated with Froude Modeling of weirs with sharp …
Organic Matter Characterization Of Virginia Rivers And Reservoirs, Susanne Margaret Lockhart
Organic Matter Characterization Of Virginia Rivers And Reservoirs, Susanne Margaret Lockhart
Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Research was conducted on characterizing the DOC characteristics and to discern whether spatial and temporal variations exist in these characteristics as impacted by seasonal, hydrologic or other factors. Data was cumulative of two studies: the State-Wide Survey in which water samples were taken in March and July 1995 from surface waters in four physiographic regions of Virginia and the James River Peninsula Survey concentrating on reservoirs and rivers on the James River Peninsula.
Results illustrate that the two largest fractions of DOC were the hydrophilic and hydrophobic acid fractions. An increase in DOC was observed between the mountains and the …
Determination Of Iron Colloid Size Distribution In The Presence Of Suspended Cells: Application To Iron Deposition Onto A Biofilm Surface, Waihung Lo, Yarrow M. Nelson, Leonard W. Lion, Michael L. Shuler, William C. Ghiorse
Determination Of Iron Colloid Size Distribution In The Presence Of Suspended Cells: Application To Iron Deposition Onto A Biofilm Surface, Waihung Lo, Yarrow M. Nelson, Leonard W. Lion, Michael L. Shuler, William C. Ghiorse
Civil and Environmental Engineering
Transport and deposition of colloidal Fe, Mn and Al oxides play key roles in the cycling of toxic transition metals in aquatic environments because these colloids strongly bind transition metals. Further, attachment of biological cells and biofilm growth on surfaces can indirectly affect toxic metal distribution by influencing the deposition of colloidal oxides to surfaces. To elucidate the mechanisms governing these processes, deposition of colloidal oxides onto surfaces must be evaluated in the presence of suspended and adherent bacterial cells. Both particle size and concentration are expected to influence deposition. An experimental protocol was developed to determine the size distribution …

A Nonparametric Wet/Dry Spell Model For Resampling Daily Precipitation, Upmanu L. Lall, Balaji Rajagopalan, David G. Tarboton
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
A nonparametric wet/dry spell model is developed for resampling daily precipitation at a site. The model considers alternating sequences of wet and dry days in a given season of the year. All marginal, joint, and conditional probability densities of interest (e.g., dry spell length, wet spell length, precipitation amount, and wet spell length given prior to dry spell length) are estimated nonparametrically using at-site data and kernel probability density estimators. Procedures for the disaggregation of wet spell precipitation into daily precipitation and for the generation of synthetic sequences are proffered. An application of the model for generating synthetic precipitation traces …
A Proposed Method Of Calibration And Correlation Of Weigh-In-Motion Systems, David L. Allen, Jerry G. Pigman
A Proposed Method Of Calibration And Correlation Of Weigh-In-Motion Systems, David L. Allen, Jerry G. Pigman
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
There are various types of weigh-in-motion systems currently in use by agencies that collect weight data. These include load cells, bending plate, capacitance pads, piezoelectric cables, and bridge WIM's. The response and behavior of these systems differs from one type to another. Most states calibrate these systems by one of two methods. The first is to calibrate by running a truck or trucks of known weights across the scales a number of times. The second is to use a sample of trucks from the traffic stream.
This report details a field calibration and correlation test site between a slow-speed WIM …

Testing Of Concrete Under Closed-Loop Control, Ravindra Gettu, Barzin Mobasher, Sergio Carmona, Daniel C. Jansen
Civil and Environmental Engineering
Closed-loop testing systems provide the ability to directly control the deformation of the loaded specimen. This considerably enhances the precision, stability, and scope of the experiments. Closed-loop machines can be used to determine the stable response of test specimen or structure by monitoring and controlling the physical quantities that are sensitive to its behavior. The importance of the various components of the closed-loop controlled system and the test configuration is reviewed in the paper. The most critical aspect of designing the test is the choice of the controlled variable. With appropriate controlled variables and good system performance, several interesting and …

Source Zones, Recurrence Rates, And Time Histories For Earthquakes Affecting Kentucky, Ron Street, Zhernning Wang, Issam E. Harik, David L. Allen, James J. Griffin
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
Time histories of hypothetical earthquakes, along with their peak-particle accelerations, and 0 and 5 percent damped response spectra are developed as guidelines for the seismic design of highway structures and bridges within Kentucky. The time histories are derived through the use of random vibration analyses, and take into consideration the probability of earthquakes from nearby seismic zones, the attenuation of ground motions with distance in the Central United States, and the possibility of a random event occurring outside of the generally recognized zones of seismicity in the area. Suggested peak-particle accelerations, time histories, and response spectra are intended for use …

Rockfall Mitigation Measures, Tommy C. Hopkins, Tony L. Beckham, William A. Puckett
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
Highways in Kentucky contain numerous rock slopes and rockfall from these slopes represent potential dangers to motorists. As these highway rock cut slopes age and deteriorate because of weathering, the potential for rockfall and rock slides increases. Some bodily injuries and traffic fatalities have been reported in past years. The general aims of this study were to establish a highway rock cut slope policy and devise a statewide system of dealing with this problem. This study represents the start of an effort by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet to develop a proactive stance and policy toward preventing, minimizing, or mitigating the …
Comparison Of Load Restriction Timings Determined Using Fhwa Guidelines And Frost Tubes, Nazli Yesiller, Craig H. Benson, Peter J. Bosscher
Comparison Of Load Restriction Timings Determined Using Fhwa Guidelines And Frost Tubes, Nazli Yesiller, Craig H. Benson, Peter J. Bosscher
Civil and Environmental Engineering
The Federal Highway Administration (FHwA) method and frost-tube measurements are used in Wisconsin to determine the timing and duration of spring load restrictions. In both methods, depth of freeze or thaw is used to determine when to apply load restrictions and to determine their duration. Average daily air temperatures are used in the FHwA method to predict the start and end of freeze and/or thaw. Frost tubes are used to directly determine depth of freeze and/or thaw. An analysis is conducted to compare these two methods using air-temperature data (for the FHwA method) and frost-tube data obtained in Wisconsin. The …
Effect Of Subsurface Heterogeneity On Free-Product Recovery From Unconfined Aquifers, Jagath J. Kaluarachchi
Effect Of Subsurface Heterogeneity On Free-Product Recovery From Unconfined Aquifers, Jagath J. Kaluarachchi
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
Free-product record system designs for light-hydrocarbon-contaminated sites were investigated to evaluate the effects of subsurface heterogeneity using a vertically integrated three-phase flow model. The input stochastic variable of the areal flow analysis was the log-intrinsic permeability and it was generated using the Turning Band method. The results of a series of hypothetical field-scale simulations showed that subsurface heterogeneity has a substantial effect on free-product recovery predictions. As the heterogeneity increased, the recoverable oil volume decreased and the residual trapped oil volume increased. As the subsurface anisotropy increased, these effects together with free- and total-oil contaminated areas were further enhanced. The …

Nonlinear Lateral Pile Deflection Prediction In Sands, Shamsher Prakash, Sanjeev Kumar
Nonlinear Lateral Pile Deflection Prediction In Sands, Shamsher Prakash, Sanjeev Kumar
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A method has been developed to predict the load-displacement relationship for single piles subjected to lateral load, embedded in sands, considering soil nonlinearity using subgrade reaction. This is the first systematic study to develop lateral load-deflection curves using modulus degradation with strain. Based on the analysis of 14 full-scale lateral pile-load tests, an empirical equation of modulus degradation with strain and a range of k hmax values, i.e., k h at 0.002 strain at 1 m (3.28 ft) depth, has also been proposed. An example problem is included to demonstrate its use. Based on this method, the computed load deflections …
