An Optimal Dynamic Inversion Approach For Controlling A Class Of One-Dimensional Nonlinear Distributed Parameter Systems, Radhakant Padhi, S. N. Balakrishnan
An Optimal Dynamic Inversion Approach For Controlling A Class Of One-Dimensional Nonlinear Distributed Parameter Systems, Radhakant Padhi, S. N. Balakrishnan
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Combining the principles of dynamic inversion and optimization theory, a new approach is presented for stable control of a class of one-dimensional nonlinear distributed parameter systems, assuming the availability a continuous actuator in the spatial domain. Unlike the existing approximate-then-design and design-then-approximate techniques, here there is no need of any approximation either of the system dynamics or of the resulting controller. Rather, the control synthesis approach is fairly straight-forward and simple. The controller formulation has more elegance because we can prove the convergence of the controller to its steady state value. To demonstrate the potential of the proposed technique, a …

Magnetically Filtered Faraday Probe For Measuring The Ion Current Density Profile Of A Hall Thruster., Joshua L. Rovey, Mitchell L. R. Walker, Alec D. Gallimore, Peter Y. Peterson
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The ability of a magnetically filtered Faraday probe (MFFP) to obtain the ion current density profile of a Hall thruster is investigated. The MFFP is designed to eliminate the collection of low-energy, charge-exchange (CEX) ions by using a variable magnetic field as an ion filter. In this study, a MFFP, Faraday probe with a reduced acceptance angle (BFP), and nude Faraday probe are used to measure the ion current density profile of a 5 kW Hall thruster operating over the range of 300-500 V and 5-10 mg/s. The probes are evaluated on a xenon propellant Hall thruster in the University …

An approximate dynamic programming (ADP) based neurocontroller is developed for a heat transfer application. Heat transfer problem for a fin in a car''s electronic module is modeled as a nonlinear distributed parameter (infinite-dimensional) system by taking into account heat loss and generation due to conduction, convection and radiation. A low-order, finite-dimensional lumped parameter model for this problem is obtained by using Galerkin projection and basis functions designed through the `Proper Orthogonal Decomposition'' technique (POD) and the `snap-shot'' solutions. A suboptimal neurocontroller is obtained with a single-network-adaptivecritic (SNAC). Further contribution of this paper is to develop an online robust controller to …

Optimal Management Of Beaver Population Using A Reduced-Order Distributed Parameter Model And Single Network Adaptive Critics, Radhakant Padhi, S. N. Balakrishnan
Optimal Management Of Beaver Population Using A Reduced-Order Distributed Parameter Model And Single Network Adaptive Critics, Radhakant Padhi, S. N. Balakrishnan
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Beavers are often found to be in conflict with human interests by creating nuisances like building dams on flowing water (leading to flooding), blocking irrigation canals, cutting down timbers, etc. At the same time they contribute to raising water tables, increased vegetation, etc. Consequently, maintaining an optimal beaver population is beneficial. Because of their diffusion externality (due to migratory nature), strategies based on lumped parameter models are often ineffective. Using a distributed parameter model for beaver population that accounts for their spatial and temporal behavior, an optimal control (trapping) strategy is presented in this paper that leads to a desired …

The Galileo mission to Jupiter was formally approved by the United States Congress in 1977, several years before the space shuttle Columbia made its maiden flight into Earth orbit. The mission was a cooperative project involving scientists and engineers from the United States, Germany, Canada, Great Britain, France, Sweden, Spain, and Australia. Even though the Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 spacecraft had performed flybys of planet Jupiter and its sixteen moons in 1979, the Galileo mission was envisioned to initiate several novel observations of Jupiter, the most massive gas planet of the solar system, and its principal moons, and conduct …

Force Protection Using Composite Sandwich Structures, R. L. Sierakowski, M. L. Hughes
United States Air Force: Publications
In the recent past, advances have been made in the attempt to utilize composite materials as components in protective structures such as those employed by the Air Force to secure critical military assets. In such applications, where lightweight materials that exhibit large levels of energy absorption and high strength/stiffness characteristics are desirable, composite sandwich constructions offer an attractive solution.
In an attempt to evaluate the suitability of certain sandwich structures for use in force protection applications, several sandwich constructions with somewhat novel core materials were identified. A group of thermoplastic core materials have been developed that possess features of both …

Over a century ago, America crossed the threshold of powered flight and gave wings to the world. Soon military leaders realized the implications of this development, and warfare was changed forever. America was fortunate to have "Great Captains" with the vision to imagine the possibilities of air and space power - Airmen like Billy Mitchell, Frank Andrews, Hap Arnold, Ira Eaker, Jimmy Doolittle, Bennie Schriever. They have given us a proud heritage of courage, excellence and innovation. In so doing, they also give us a sense of perspective and a way to understand the Air Force's future.
Development Of A Nonlinear Estimator-Based Model Of Pilot Performance During Brownout Conditions, Karl Ulrich Schultz
Development Of A Nonlinear Estimator-Based Model Of Pilot Performance During Brownout Conditions, Karl Ulrich Schultz
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
During conditions of visual occlusion, pilots are forced to rapidly adapt their scan to accommodate the new observable states via instruments rather than the visual environment. During this transition, the provision of aircraft state information via other than visual modalities improves pilot performance presumably through the increase in situational awareness provided immediately following the visual occlusion event.
The Tactile Situational Awareness System (TSAS) was developed to provide continuous position information to the pilot via tactile rather than visual means. However, as a low-resolution display, significant preprocessing of information is required to maximize utility of this new technology.

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Electromagnetic suspension of Magnetic Levitation Vehicles (Maglev) has been studied for many years as an alternative to wheel-on rail transportation systems. In this work, design and implementation of control systems for a Maglev laboratory experiment and a Maglev vehicle under development at Old Dominion University are described. Both plants are modeled and simulated with consideration of issues associated with system non-linearity, structural flexibility and electromagnetic force modeling. Discussion concerning different control strategies, namely centralized and decentralized approaches are compared and contrasted in this work. Different types of electromagnetic non-linearities are considered and described to establish a convenient method for modeling …

Force Measurements On A Flapping And Pitching Wing At Low Reynolds Numbers, Kakkattukuzhy M. Isaac, Anthony Colozza, Jessica Rolwes
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Force measurements from experiments conducted in water on a flapping-and-pitching thin flat plate wing of semi-elliptic planform at low Reynolds numbers are reported. Time varying force data, measured using a force transducer, provide a means to understand the mechanisms that lead to enhanced performance observed in insect flight compared to fixed wing aerodynamics. Experimental uncertainties associated with low level (∼1N) fluid dynamic force measurements on flapping-and-pitching wings are addressed. a previously proposed pitching mode in which the leading edge and trailing edge switch roles to allow using cambered airfoils has been shown to be viable and may have advantages over …

During vehicle accidents, occupant's head impacting on windshield or side window is commonly observed. Any attempt to design glazing that minimizes injury to and death of occupants during a vehicle accident requires a thorough understanding of the mechanical behavior of automotive glazing subjected to head impact loads. A continuum damage mechanics (CDM) based constitutive model is developed and implemented into an axisymmetric finite element model to study the failure and impact resistance of laminated automotive glazing subjected to simulated head impact. An anisotropic elastic damage tensor with a linear damage evolution law is chosen to model the failure of the …

Dynamic Re-Optimization Of A Spacecraft Attitude Controller In The Presence Of Uncertainties, Nishant Unnikrishnan, S. N. Balakrishnan, Radhakant Padhi
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Online trained neural networks have become popular in recent years in the design of robust and adaptive controllers for dynamic systems with uncertainties due to their universal function approximation capabilities. This paper discusses a technique that dynamically reoptimizes a Single Network Adaptive Critic (SNAC) based optimal controller in the presence of unmodeled plant uncertainties. The SNAC based optimal controller designed for the nominal plant model no more retains optimality in the presence of uncertainties/unmodeled dynamics that may creep up in the system equations during operation. This calls for a strategy to re-optimize the existing SNAC controller with respect to the …

Experimental Simulation Of Lightning Optical Emissions In Clouds, Anil Ogale, Kunal Mitra, Arindam Banerjee
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The objective of the study is to experimentally determine the information content of lightning optical emissions through clouds. Clouds affect the amplitude of lightning signals and the apparent dimensions of the optical source. Multiple scattering from the cloud media also alters the shape of the temporal profile of the lightning signal. The goal is to provide accurate estimates of the arrival time delay and temporal pulse width broadening of output signals emitted from clouds for different cloud and lightning parameters. Experiments conducted in the laboratory yield a temporally broadened pulse with an overall decrease in the peak and a delay …

Optimal Impulse Control Of Systems With Control Constraints And Application To Hiv Treatment, Vivek Yadav, S. N. Balakrishnan
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, conditions for optimal impulse control of an impulsive system with constraints on control are derived. These hold for a system whose states can be changed instantaneously at discrete times with impulses while a continuous control is being applied between those times. The conditions derived are applied to the problem of optimal HIV treatment. Simulation results are presented to show the treatment procedure. The results obtained show that the intervention method developed leads to good results.
Effect Of Operator Control Configuration On Unmanned Aerial System Trainability, John Neumann
Effect Of Operator Control Configuration On Unmanned Aerial System Trainability, John Neumann
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Unmanned aerial systems (UAS) carry no pilot on board, yet they still require live operators to handle critical functions such as mission planning and execution. Humans also interpret the sensor information provided by these platforms. This applies to all classes of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV's), including the smaller portable systems used for gathering real-time reconnaissance during military operations in urban terrain. The need to quickly and reliably train soldiers to control small UAS operations demands that the human-system interface be intuitive and easy to master. In this study, participants completed a series of tests of spatial ability and were then …
Reduction Of Vortex-Driven Oscillations In A Solid Rocket Motor Cold Flow Simulation Through Active Control, Jami Ward
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Control of vortex-driven instabilities was demonstrated via a scaled-down, cold-flow simulation that modeled closed-end acoustics. When vortex shedding frequencies couple with the natural acoustic modes of a choked chamber, potentially damaging low-frequency instabilities may arise. Although passive solutions can be effective, an active control solution is preferable. An experiment was performed to demonstrate an active control scheme for the reduction of vortex-driven oscillations. A non-reacting experiment using a primary flow of air, where both the duct exit and inlet are choked, simulated the closed-end acoustics. Two plates, separated by 1.27 cm, produced the vortex shedding phenomenon at the chamber's first …

This study researched the history of Space Shuttle Reusable Surface Insulation which was designed and developed for use on the United States Orbiter fleet to protect from the high heating experienced during reentry through Earth's atmosphere. Specifically the tile system which is attached to the structure by the means of an RTV adhesive has experienced situations where the bonds are identified as subnominal. The history of these subnominal conditions is presented along with a recent identification of a subnominal bond between the Strain Isolation Pad and the tile substrate itself. Tests were run to identify the cause of these subnominal …
Variational Approach To The Volume Viscosity Of Fluids, Allan J. Zuckerwar, Robert L. Ash
Variational Approach To The Volume Viscosity Of Fluids, Allan J. Zuckerwar, Robert L. Ash
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
The variational principle of Hamilton is applied to develop an analytical formulation to describe the volume viscosity in fluids. The procedure described here differs from those used in the past in that a dissipative process is represented by the chemical affinity and progress variable (sometimes called "order parameter") of a reacting species. These state variables appear in the variational integral in two places: first, in the expression for the internal energy, and second, in a subsidiary condition accounting for the conservation of the reacting species. As a result of the variational procedure, two dissipative terms appear in the Navier-Stokes equation. …
Plasma Modeling For Ultrashort Laser Ablation Of Dielectrics, Lan Jiang, Hai-Lung Tsai
Plasma Modeling For Ultrashort Laser Ablation Of Dielectrics, Lan Jiang, Hai-Lung Tsai
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In ultrashort pulse (<10 ps) laser ablation of dielectrics, affected materials are first transformed into absorbing plasma with metallic properties and, then, the subsequent laser-plasma interaction causes material removals. For ultrashort-pulse laser ablation of dielectrics, this study proposes a model using the Fokker-Planck equation for electron density distribution, a plasma model for the optical properties of ionized dielectrics, and quantum treatments for electron heating and relaxation time. The free electron density distribution of the plasma within the pulse duration is then used to determine the ablation crater shape. The predicted threshold fluences and ablation depths for barium aluminum borosilicate and fused silica are in agreement with published experimental data. It is found that the significantly varying optical properties in time and space are the key factors determining the ablation crater shape. The effects of fluence and pulse duration are also studied.

There is little doubt that one of the most interesting and revolutionary, but also complicated and challenging space projects of today is Galileo, Europe’s own full-fledged second-generation navigation satellite system. Developed jointly by the European Union through the Commission and the European Space Agency, Galileo should by the end of the decade have thirty operational satellites in middle-earth-orbits providing timing, positioning and navigation signals across the globe.
From the very beginning Galileo was envisaged in particular by the Commission as a public-private-partnership (PPP). On the one hand, a private concessionaire should operate the system as of full operational capability (originally …

Modern product design is a very complicated process which involves groups of designers, manufacturers, suppliers, and customer representatives. Conflicts are unavoidable in collaboration among multiple stakeholders, who have different objectives, requirements, and priorities. Unfortunately, current web-based collaborative engineering design systems do not support collaborative conflict resolution. In this paper, we will develop an intelligent computational argumentation model to enable management of a large scale argumentation network, and resolution of conflicts based on argumentation from many participants. A web-based intelligent argumentation tool is developed as a part of a web-based collaborative engineering design system based on the above model to resolve …

Dynamic Aeroelastic Analysis Of Wing/Store Configurations, Gregory H. Parker
Dynamic Aeroelastic Analysis Of Wing/Store Configurations, Gregory H. Parker
Theses and Dissertations
Limit-cycle oscillation, or LCO, is an aeroelastic phenomenon characterized by limited amplitude, self-sustaining oscillations produced by fluid-structure interactions. In order to study this phenomenon, code was developed to interface a modal structural model with a commercial computational fluid dynamics program. LCO was simulated for a rectangular wing, referred to as the Goland+ wing. It was determined that the aerodynamic nonlinearity responsible for LCO in the Goland+ wing was the combination of strong trailing-edge and lambda shocks which periodically appear and disappear. This mechanism limited the flow of energy into the structure which quenched the growth of the flutter, resulting …

Numerical Study Of Chemically Reacting Viscous Flow Relevant To Pulsed Detonation Engines, Tae-Hyeong Yi
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive
A computational fluid dynamics code for two-dimensional, multi-species, laminar Navier-Stokes equations is developed to simulate a recently proposed engine concept for a pulsed detonation based propulsion system and to investigate the feasibility of the engine of the concept. The governing equations that include transport phenomena such as viscosity, thermal conduction and diffusion are coupled with chemical reactions. The gas is assumed to be thermally perfect and in chemically non-equilibrium. The stiffness due to coupling the fluid dynamics and the chemical kinetics is properly taken care of by using a time-operator splitting method and a variable coefficient ordinary differential equation solver.
