Application Of Kalman Filtering To Real-Time Flight Regime Recognition Algorithms In A Helicopter Health And Usage Monitoring System, Rachel Elizabeth Rajnicek

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this study is the application of Kalman filters to real-time Flight Regime Recognition (FRR) algorithms to identify the regime flown and observe transitions between flight regimes. Rotor fault identification, a technique that is somewhat similar to flight regime recognition, successfully used Kalman filters to determine fault types and damage locations. Recently developed FRR algorithms successfully applied Hidden Markov Models, which are similar to Kalman filters. The selected regime set for this study derives from a study performed by Bell Helicopter Textron, Inc. The selected parameter set for this study is modified from the Schweizer 300 Flight Test …

Modeling, Analysis And Testing Of A Semi-Active Control System For Landing Gear Applications, David James Majko Jul 2008

Modeling, Analysis And Testing Of A Semi-Active Control System For Landing Gear Applications, David James Majko

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

There have been several recent studies on the potential benefits of controllable dampers. Controllable dampers can use a fluid with controllable properties, such as Magneto - Rheological fluid (MR fluid), or control the damping force by changing orifice size. For this project, controllable dampers were created using MR fluid. When exposed to a magnetic fluid, the viscosity of MR fluid can change significantly. By replacing the standard damper oil in an aircraft landing gear and exposing the system to an appropriate magnetic field, the damping coefficients of the system can be changed almost instantaneously to accommodate nearly any situation. This …

A New Contour Reconstruction Approach From Dexel Data In Virtual Sculpting, Kemal Yuksek, Weihan Zhang, Boryslaw Iwo Ridzalski, Ming-Chuan Leu

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a novel method of contour reconstruction from dexel data solving the shape anomalies for the complex geometry in virtual sculpting. Grouping and traversing processes are developed to find connectivity between dexels along every two adjacent rays. After traveling through all the rays on one slice, sub-boundaries are connected into full boundaries which are desired contours. The complexity of the new method has been investigated and determined as O(n). We also demonstrate the ability of the described method for viewing a sculpted model from different directions.

Multivariable Flight Control Design Tool Incorporating Gain And Phase Root Locus, Yong Ki Yoon Jul 2008

Multivariable Flight Control Design Tool Incorporating Gain And Phase Root Locus, Yong Ki Yoon

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A challenging problem in flight control system design for highly maneuverable aircraft is the coordinated control of the lateral-directional axes. Design goals are based on desired flying qualities giving an indication of whether the response to pilot inputs will be acceptable. Satisfying these closed-loop design objectives employing a computerized flight control system requires multiple feedback and crossfeed paths which operate in a well coordinated fashion. Contemporary control design tools, which close all loops simultaneously, have addressed this problem for several decades. Concerns associated with these strategies are the complicated mathematical relationships between the designer inputs and resulting closed-loop properties, and …

Image Processing Technique For Runway Segmentation Using Color Spaces, Naresh Reddy Reddy Jul 2008

Image Processing Technique For Runway Segmentation Using Color Spaces, Naresh Reddy Reddy

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Aircrafts of the future now face the challenge of growing demand for safety which will require a more significant level of pilot assistance than is available today. During an approach to the airport runway, an algorithm that continuously segments the runway from the rest of the background with very little human intervention is very useful for both enhancing the landing safety and reducing the pilot's work load. This thesis presents a novel method for segmenting airport runways on a clear day and in poor visibility conditions using the color space components. In this thesis, collages were formed for both runway …

A 6-Dof Force Transducer Design From An Existing Rocket Payload Attachment Fitting, Thomas H. Johnson Jul 2008

A 6-Dof Force Transducer Design From An Existing Rocket Payload Attachment Fitting, Thomas H. Johnson

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Lack of reliable in-flight data regarding the forces experienced by a spacecraft inside a Boeing Delta II rocket have led to the need for a simple and cost effective force measurement solution. This research investigates one solution that creates a direct reading force transducer to monitor the forces and moments experienced by the spacecraft rather than inferring forces from accelerometer readings as is currently practiced. In order to minimize costs, it is desired that the transducer is designed out of the existing structure that connects the spacecraft to the second stage. The existing structure is called a Payload Attachment Fitting …

Nonlinear Flutter Analysis Of Curved Panels Under Yawed Supersonic Flow And At Elevated Temperatures Using Finite Elements, Satyajit Sudhir Ghoman

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

There are large number of papers dedicated toward the investigation of flutter analysis of flat plates in supersonic flow regime, but very few papers address the problem of flutter of curved panels. Furthermore, many of the panel flutter investigations including thermal effects, have dealt with liat plates. Scarce literature exists regarding the flutter of curved panels with thermal effects. Hence, the objective of this thesis is to develop, for the first time in the literature, a consistent finite element formulation and an efficient solution procedure to investigate nonlinear flutter of curved panels at yawed supersonic flow at elevated temperatures.

Fuel Composition Analysis Of Endothermically Heated Jp-8 Fuel For Use In A Pulse Detonation Engine, Eric A. Nagley Jun 2008

Fuel Composition Analysis Of Endothermically Heated Jp-8 Fuel For Use In A Pulse Detonation Engine, Eric A. Nagley

Theses and Dissertations

Waste heat from a pulse detonation engine (PDE) was extracted via zeolite catalyst coated concentric tube-counter flow heat exchangers to produce supercritical pyrolytic conditions for JP-8 fuel. A sampling system and method were developed that enabled samples of reacted fuel to be extracted during steady state operation. Samples were taken over a range of heat exchanger exit temperatures from 820 K (1016° F) to 940 K (1232° F). Offline analysis of liquid and vapor fuel samples indicated fuel decomposition via typical pyrolytic reaction pathways. The liquid analysis showed conversion of parent fuel components with formation of unsaturates (aromatics and alkenes) …

Gaussian Process Metamodeling Applied To A Circulation Control Wing, Scott Turner, Tyler Ball, David D. Marshall Jun 2008

Gaussian Process Metamodeling Applied To A Circulation Control Wing, Scott Turner, Tyler Ball, David D. Marshall

Aerospace Engineering

Metamodeling fluid systems is an efficient way to do complex analysis on multivariate problems and can allow for time savings in an optimization setting. Gaussian process metamodels provide a flexibility in modeling that can be extended to both experimental and deterministic experiments. This paper specifically addresses such models applied to computational fluid dynamics analysis of a D circulation control wing. The framework for a generalized approach is first overviewed and then applied to the analysis of the aerodnamics. The Gaussian process regression was essential for both simplifying the calculations required for balanced field length computation and for analysis of complex …

Frequency Domain Analysis And Design Of Iterative Learning Control For Systems With Stochastic Disturbances, Douglas A. Bristow Jun 2008

Frequency Domain Analysis And Design Of Iterative Learning Control For Systems With Stochastic Disturbances, Douglas A. Bristow

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this work we examine the performance of iterative learning control (ILC) for systems with non-repeating disturbances and random noise. Single-input, single- output linear time-invariant systems and iteration-invariant learning filters are considered. We find that a tradeoff exists between the convergence rate and converged error spectrum. Optimal filter designs, which are dependant on the disturbance and noise spectra, are developed. We also present simple design guidelines for the case when explicit models of disturbance and noise spectra are not available. A numerical design example is presented.

Formation Control Of Car-Like Mobile Robots: A Lyapunov Function Based Approach, S. A. Panimadai Ramaswamy, S. N. Balakrishnan Jun 2008

Formation Control Of Car-Like Mobile Robots: A Lyapunov Function Based Approach, S. A. Panimadai Ramaswamy, S. N. Balakrishnan

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In literature leader - follower strategy has been used extensively for formation control of car-like mobile robots with the control law being derived from the kinematics. This paper takes it a step further and a nonlinear control law is derived using Lyapunov analysis for formation control of car-like mobile robots using robot dynamics. Controller is split into two parts. The first part is the development of a velocity controller for the follower from the error kinematics (linear and angular). The second part involves the use of the dynamics of the robot in the development of a torque controller for both …

Weighting Matrix Design For Robust Monotonic Convergence In Norm Optimal Iterative Learning Control, Douglas A. Bristow Jun 2008

Weighting Matrix Design For Robust Monotonic Convergence In Norm Optimal Iterative Learning Control, Douglas A. Bristow

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper we examine the robustness of norm optimal ILC with quadratic cost criterion for discrete-time, linear time-invariant, single-input single-output systems. A bounded multiplicative uncertainty model is used to describe the uncertain system and a sufficient condition for robust monotonic convergence is developed. We find that, for sufficiently large uncertainty, the performance weighting can not be selected arbitrarily large, and thus overall performance is limited. To maximize available performance, a time-frequency design methodology is presented to shape the weighting matrix based on the initial tracking error. The design is applied to a nanopositioning system and simulation results are presented.

Optimal Neuro-Controller Synthesis For Variable-Time Impulse Driven Systems, Xiaohua Wang, S. N. Balakrishnan Jun 2008

Optimal Neuro-Controller Synthesis For Variable-Time Impulse Driven Systems, Xiaohua Wang, S. N. Balakrishnan

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper develops a systematic scheme to solve for the optimal controls of variable time impulsive systems. First, the optimality conditions for variable time impulse driven systems are derived using the calculus of variation. After wards, a neural network based adaptive critic method is proposed to numerically solve the two-point boundary value problems formulated based on the optimality conditions derived. Finally, two examples - one linear and one nonlinear - are presented to illustrate the conditions derived and to show the power of the neural network based adaptive critic method proposed.

Optimal Control Of Electrodynamic Tethers, Robert E. Stevens Jun 2008

Optimal Control Of Electrodynamic Tethers, Robert E. Stevens

Theses and Dissertations

Low thrust propulsion systems such as electrodynamic tethers offer a fuel-efficient means to maneuver satellites to new orbits, however they can only perform such maneuvers when they are continuously operated for a long time. Such long-term maneuvers occur over many orbits often rendering short time scale trajectory optimization methods ineffective. An approach to multi-revolution, long time scale optimal control of an electrodynamic tether is investigated for a tethered satellite system in Low Earth Orbit with atmospheric drag. Control is assumed to be periodic over several orbits since under the assumptions of a nearly circular orbit, periodic control yields the only …

Creep-Rupture And Fatigue Behavior Of A Notched Oxide/Oxide Ceramic Matrix Composite At Elevated Temperature, Barth H. Boyer Jun 2008

Creep-Rupture And Fatigue Behavior Of A Notched Oxide/Oxide Ceramic Matrix Composite At Elevated Temperature, Barth H. Boyer

Theses and Dissertations

The inherent resistance to oxidation of oxide/oxide ceramic matrix composites makes them ideal for aerospace applications that require high temperature and long life under corrosive environments. The ceramic matrix composite (CMC) of interest in the study is the Nextel™720/Alumina (N720/A) which is comprised of an 8-harness satin weave of Nextel™ fibers embedded in an alumina matrix. One of the top applications for N720/A is in the combustion section of a turbine engine. This will require mounting and shaping the material with rivets and possibly sharp edges thereby introducing geometry based stress concentration factors. Sullivan’s research concentrated on the effects of …

Vibration Analysis Of Commercial Thermal Barrier Coatings, Lindell E. Pearson Jun 2008

Vibration Analysis Of Commercial Thermal Barrier Coatings, Lindell E. Pearson

Theses and Dissertations

Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are currently used in turbine engine components to protect substrate material from being exposed to high temperatures and corrosion. These coatings also have the potential to reduce stress in critical engine parts which could increase the life cycle of these parts. The fact that these coatings are already qualified for use in turbine engines makes it worth investigating their damping properties. The problem with TBCs is that they are difficult to characterize as they display nonlinear properties. This research utilizes an experimental and finite element procedure to characterize these coatings. A scanning electron microscope (SEM) was …

Design Of A Linear Time-Varying Cross-Coupled Iterative Learning Controller, K. L. Barton, Douglas A. Bristow, Andrew G. Alleyne Jun 2008

Design Of A Linear Time-Varying Cross-Coupled Iterative Learning Controller, K. L. Barton, Douglas A. Bristow, Andrew G. Alleyne

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In many manufacturing applications contour tracking is more important than individual axis tracking. Many control techniques, including iterative learning control (ILC), target individual axis error. Because individual axis error only indirectly relates to contour error, these approaches may not be very effective for contouring applications. Cross-coupled ILC (CCILC) is a variation on traditional ILC that targets the contour tracking directly. In contour trajectories with rapid changes, high frequency control is necessary in order to meet tracking requirements. This paper presents an improved CCILC that uses a linear time-varying (LTV) filter to provide high frequency control for short durations. The improved …

Optimal Controller Synthesis Of Variable-Time Impulsive Problems Using Single Network Adaptive Critics, Xiaohua Wang, S. N. Balakrishnan

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a systematic approach to solve for the optimal control of a variable-time impulsive system. First, optimality condition for a variable-time impulsive system is derived using the calculus of variations method. Next, a single network adaptive critic technique is proposed to numerically solve for the optimal control and the detailed algorithm is presented. Finally, two examples-one linear and one nonlinear-are solved applying the conditions derived and the algorithm proposed. Numerical results demonstrate the power of the neural network based adaptive critic method in solving this class of problems.

Adaptive Quaternion Control Of A Miniature Tailsitter Uav, Nathan B. Knoebel, Timothy W. Mclain

Faculty Publications

The miniature tailsitter is a unique aircraft with inherent advantages over typical unmanned aerial vehicles. With the capabilities of both hover and level flight, these small, portable systems can produce efficient maneuvers for enhanced surveillance and autonomy with little threat to surroundings and the system itself. Such vehicles create control challenges due to the two different flight regimes. These challenges are addressed with a computationally efficient adaptive quaternion control algorithm. A backstepping method for model cancellation and consistent tracking of reference model attitude dynamics is derived. This is used in conjunction with a regularized data-weighting recursive least-squares algorithm for the …

Mechanisms Of T Helper Cell Modulation In A Simulated Space Radiation Environment, Asma Rizvi

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Exposure to solar particle events (SPEs) poses the most serious threat to astronaut health. Due to this radiation environment, exploration of the solar system beyond Earth’s orbit entails many risks for the crew on these deep space missions. Depression or dysfunction of the immune system is a major concern due to its high radio-sensitivity; potential consequences include overwhelming infection, development of cancer, fibrosis, and poor wound healing. Astronauts are also exposed to low dose/low dose rate (LDR) radiation. A three month stay at the international space station exposes them to ~ 0.05 Gy of radiation.

C57BL/6 mice received LDR gamma-radiation …

Theses and Dissertations

The capability to rapidly deploy tactical satellites to meet a Joint Force Commander's immediate battlespace requirements is a well-documented joint capability need. Key U.S. strategic documentation cites the need for the capability to maintain persistent surveillance or an "unblinking eye" over battlespace and to rapidly reconstitute critical space capabilities to preserve situational awareness. The warfighter requires a tactical space-based deployment capability which employs a request to launch and operational deployment window of 90 to 120 days. This master's thesis executed two (2) major areas of work: apply, and reinforce the Operationally Responsive Space (ORS) mission tasks using the Joint Capabilities …

Evaluation Of Nanocomposites As Lightweight Electronic Enclosures For Satellites' Applications, Benjamin T. Harder Jun 2008

Evaluation Of Nanocomposites As Lightweight Electronic Enclosures For Satellites' Applications, Benjamin T. Harder

Theses and Dissertations

The United States military is exploring the use of nanocomposite materials for satellite structural applications. Current composite spacecraft structures are nonconductive and must have expensive shielding materials applied in order to protect the spacecraft from catastrophic damage that can be caused by electromagnetic interference (EMI) and/or electrostatic discharge (ESD) which are characteristics of the space environment. Conductive nanocomposites are being developed for spacecraft structures that will provide ESD and EMI shielding protection without the need for expensive secondary shielding materials. This thesis studied one such material consisting of M55J/RS-3 composite combined with nickel nanostrands™. Four different configurations were tested for …

Cfd As Applied To The Design Of Short Takeoff And Landing Vehicles Using Circulation Control, Tyler M. Ball Jun 2008

Cfd As Applied To The Design Of Short Takeoff And Landing Vehicles Using Circulation Control, Tyler M. Ball

Master's Theses

The ability to predict the distance required for an aircraft to takeoff is an essential component of aircraft design. It involves aspects related to each of the major aircraft systems: aerodynamics, propulsion, configuration, structures, and stability and control. For an aircraft designed for short takeoffs and landings (STOL), designing the aircraft to provide a short takeoff distance, or more precisely the balanced field length (BFL), often leads to the use of a powered lift technique such as circulation control (CC). Although CC has been around for many years, it has never been used on a production aircraft. This is in …
