Wrinkling Of Functionally Graded Sandwich Structures Subject To Biaxial And In-Plane Shear Loads, Harold Costa Jan 2017

Wrinkling Of Functionally Graded Sandwich Structures Subject To Biaxial And In-Plane Shear Loads, Harold Costa

Masters Theses

"Benefits of a functionally graded core increasing wrinkling stability of sandwich panels have been demonstrated in a recent paper [1] where a several-fold increase in the wrinkling stress was observed, without a significant weight penalty, using a stiffer core adjacent to the facings. In the present paper wrinkling is analyzed in case where the facings are subject to biaxial compression and/or in-plane shear loading and the core is arbitrary graded through-the-thickness. Two issues addressed are the effect of biaxial or in-plane shear loads on wrinkling stability of panels with both graded and ungraded core and the verification that functional grading …

Plume Characterization Of Electric Solid Propellant Pulsed Microthrusters, Matthew S. Glascock, Joshua L. Rovey, Shae Williams, Jason Thrasher

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Electric solid propellants are an attractive option for propulsion because they are ignited only by an applied electric current. This leads to capabilities such as on-demand throttling and reignition in chemical combustion operation, and it lends itself to application in electric propulsion. In this work, the plasma plume created by electric solid propellant pulsed micro thrusters is investigated using a nude Faraday probe, a triple Langmuir probe, and residual gas analysis. The thrusters are tested at a vacuum level of 2 x 10-5torr. Results indicate an average plume electron temperature of 1.7 eV and a density of 1011 to 1014cm-3. …

Resilient Control Of Active-Passive Networked Multiagent Systems In The Presence Of Persistent Disturbances, Dzung Tran, Tansel Yucelen, John Daniel Peterson

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An active-passive networked multiagent system consists of agents subject to inputs (active agents) and agents without any inputs (passive agents). Specifically, this class of networked multiagent systems utilizes a novel form of dynamic consensus filters, where the states of all agents converge to the average of the exogenous inputs applied only to the active agents, and it has broad practical applications including, for example, real-time situational awareness and data gathering using sensor networks and distributed control of multirobot systems. In this paper, we focus on active-passive networked multiagent systems that are subject to constant and/or harmonic exogenous disturbances. In particular, …

Robust Airfoil Design Optimization Using Stochastic Expansions And Utility Theory, Xiaosong Du, Leifur Leifsson, Slawomir Koziel

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Efficient and effective robust airfoil design optimization is proposed by integrating stochastic expansions and utility theory. In this work, the stochastic expansions are generated efficiently using non-intrusive polynomial chaos (NIPC) expansions. The robust design problem is formulated using utility functions which transfer a targeted response using a prescribed mathematical function to represent the designers' risk preferences. The proposed approach is demonstrated using examples of lift-constrained airfoil drag minimization in transonic viscous flow using the Mach number as an uncertain variable in the range of 0.70 to 0.75. The results are compared with the common problem formulation for robust design of …

This thesis focuses on the development of a flexible, physics-based life prediction approach for steels under complex conditions. Low alloy steels continue to be the materials of choice for large turbomachinery structures experiencing high temperatures for long durations. There has been significant advancement in the research of modern alloys; furthermore, these materials are continue to be utilized in boilers, heat exchanger tubes, and throttle valve bodies in both turbomachinery and pressure-vessel/piping applications. The material 2.25Cr-1Mo is studied in the present work. The resistance of this alloy to deformation and damage under creep and/or fatigue at elevated temperatures make it appropriate …

Combustion Of 1,3-Butadiene Behind Reflected Shocks, Joseph Lopez Jan 2017

Combustion Of 1,3-Butadiene Behind Reflected Shocks, Joseph Lopez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The chemical kinetics of 1,3-butadiene (1,3-C4H6) are important because 1,3-butadiene is a major intermediate during the combustion of real fuels. However, there is only limited information on the chemical kinetics of 1,3-butadiene combustion, which has applications in several combustion schemes that are currently being developed, including spark-assisted homogeneous charge compression ignition and fuel reformate exhaust gas recirculation. In the present work, the ignition delay times of 1,3-butadiene mixtures has been investigated using pressure data. Oxidation of 1,3-butadiene/oxygen mixtures diluted in argon or nitrogen at equivalence ratios (Φ) of 0.3 behind reflected shock waves has been studied at temperatures ranging from …

Simultaneous Imaging Of The Diatomic Carbon And Methylidyne Species Radicals For The Quantification Of The Fuel To Air Ratio From Low To High Pressure Combustion, Jonathan Reyes Jan 2017

Simultaneous Imaging Of The Diatomic Carbon And Methylidyne Species Radicals For The Quantification Of The Fuel To Air Ratio From Low To High Pressure Combustion, Jonathan Reyes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The radical intensity ratio of the diatomic carbon to methylidyne was characterized at initial pressures up to 10 bar using certified gasoline of 93% octane. This gasoline was selected due to its availability as a common fuel. The characterization of the radical intensity ratio of gasoline at elevated pressures enabled the creation of a calibration map of the equivalence ratio at engine relevant conditions. The proposed calibration map acts as a feedback loop for a combustor. It allows for the location of local rich and lean zones. The local information acquired can be used as an optimization parameter for injection …

Atmospheric Entry, Dillon A. Martin Jan 2017

Atmospheric Entry, Dillon A. Martin

Honors Undergraduate Theses

The development of atmospheric entry guidance methods is crucial to achieving the requirements for future missions to Mars; however, many missions implement a unique controller which are spacecraft specific. Here we look at the implementation of neural networks as a baseline controller that will work for a variety of different spacecraft. To accomplish this, a simulation is developed and validated with the Apollo controller. A feedforward neural network controller is then analyzed and compared to the Apollo case.

Timoshenko Beam Viscous Damping Model For Spacecraft Cabling Dynamics, Brandi Mcpherson Jan 2017

Timoshenko Beam Viscous Damping Model For Spacecraft Cabling Dynamics, Brandi Mcpherson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With the increasing data handling and power requirements of today's spacecraft, accurately modeling the effects of cabling on spacecraft structural dynamics has become an increasingly important part of the design process. During testing, spacecraft cabling produces a damping effect on the system dynamics; however, current models often overpredict this response in higher frequency modes and produce unrealistic damping values. Previous models incorporated structural and viscous damping terms into Euler-Bernoulli and shear beams; this thesis presents a viscous damping model for Timoshenko beams that can accurately capture the effects of both spacecraft wiring and harnesses during the design phase. Damping in …

Analytical Strip Method For Thin Cylindrical Shells, John T. Perkins Jan 2017

Analytical Strip Method For Thin Cylindrical Shells, John T. Perkins

Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering

The Analytical Strip Method (ASM) for the analysis of thin cylindrical shells is presented in this dissertation. The system of three governing differential equations for the cylindrical shell are reduced to a single eighth order partial differential equation (PDE) in terms of a potential function. The PDE is solved as a single series form of the potential function, from which the displacement and force quantities are determined. The solution is applicable to isotropic, generally orthotropic, and laminated shells. Cylinders may have simply supported edges, clamped edges, free edges, or edges supported by isotropic beams. The cylindrical shell can be stiffened …

Data-Driven Adaptive Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes K - Ω Models For Turbulent Flow-Field Simulations, Zhiyong Li Jan 2017

Data-Driven Adaptive Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes K - Ω Models For Turbulent Flow-Field Simulations, Zhiyong Li

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

The data-driven adaptive algorithms are explored as a means of increasing the accuracy of Reynolds-averaged turbulence models. This dissertation presents two new data-driven adaptive computational models for simulating turbulent flow, where partial-but-incomplete measurement data is available. These models automatically adjust (i.e., adapts) the closure coefficients of the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) k-ω turbulence equations to improve agreement between the simulated flow and a set of prescribed measurement data.

The first approach is the data-driven adaptive RANS k-ω (D-DARK) model. It is validated with three canonical flow geometries: pipe flow, the backward-facing step, and flow around an airfoil. For all 3 test …

Autonomous Quadrotor Collision Avoidance And Destination Seeking In A Gps-Denied Environment, Thomas C. Kirven Jan 2017

Autonomous Quadrotor Collision Avoidance And Destination Seeking In A Gps-Denied Environment, Thomas C. Kirven

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

This thesis presents a real-time autonomous guidance and control method for a quadrotor in a GPS-denied environment. The quadrotor autonomously seeks a destination while it avoids obstacles whose shape and position are initially unknown. We implement the obstacle avoidance and destination seeking methods using off-the-shelf sensors, including a vision-sensing camera. The vision-sensing camera detects the positions of points on the surface of obstacles. We use this obstacle position data and a potential-field method to generate velocity commands. We present a backstepping controller that uses the velocity commands to generate the quadrotor's control inputs. In indoor experiments, we demonstrate that the …

Characterization Of Mechanical Properties In Nanoparticle Reinforced Hybrid Carbon Fiber Composites Using Photoluminescence Piezospectroscopy, Sanjida Jahan Jan 2017

Characterization Of Mechanical Properties In Nanoparticle Reinforced Hybrid Carbon Fiber Composites Using Photoluminescence Piezospectroscopy, Sanjida Jahan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Carbon fiber composites have become popular in aerospace structures and applications due to their light weight, high strength, and high performance. Hybrid carbon fiber reinforced polymer (HCFRP) composites with alumina nanoparticles reinforcement display improved material properties such as fracture toughness, resistance to crack propagation and improved fatigue life. However, homogeneous dispersion of nanoscale materials in the matrix is important for even distribution of the improved properties. Implementing silane coupling agents (SCAs) improves dispersion by acting as a bridge between organic and inorganic materials, which increases interfacial strength and decreases sedimentation by bonding the particulate filler to the fiber reinforcement. This …

Development And Implementation Of A Streamlined Process For The Creation And Mechanization Of Negative Poisson's Ratio Meso-Scale Patterns, Matthew Shuler Jan 2017

Development And Implementation Of A Streamlined Process For The Creation And Mechanization Of Negative Poisson's Ratio Meso-Scale Patterns, Matthew Shuler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis focuses on the development a streamlined process used to create novel meso-scale pattern used to induce negative Poisson's ratio (NPR) behavior at the bulk scale. This process includes, the development, optimization, and implementation of a candidate pattern. Currently, the majority of NPR structures are too porous to be utilized in conventional applications. For others, manufacturing methods have yet to realize the meso-scale pattern. Consequently, new NPR meta-materials must be developed in order to confer transformative thermomechanical responses to structures where transverse expansion is more desirable than contraction. For example, materials at high temperature. Additionally, patterns that take into …

Long And Short-Range Air Navigation On Spherical Earth, Nihad E. Daidzic Jan 2017

Long And Short-Range Air Navigation On Spherical Earth, Nihad E. Daidzic

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

Global range air navigation implies non-stop flight between any two airports on Earth. Such effort would require airplanes with the operational air range of at least 12,500 NM which is about 40-60% longer than anything existing in commercial air transport today. Air transportation economy requires flying shortest distance, which in the case of spherical Earth are Orthodrome arcs. Rhumb-line navigation has little practical use in long-range flights, but has been presented for historical reasons and for comparison. Database of about 50 major international airports from every corner of the world has been designed and used in testing and route validation. …

Investigation Of Rope Formation In Gas–Solid Flows Through A 90° Pipe Bend Using High-Speed Video And Cfd Simulations, Sai S. Guda, Steven L. Rowan, Tao Yang

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

A study of rope formation in gas–solid flows through abrupt turns has been conducted. Experiments in which high-speed video was recorded and analyzed for solid concentration profiles were compared to CFD simulations utilizing both RANS and large eddy simulation turbulence models. In both simulations and experiments, particle-laden flows of air and ground flaxseed, with solid loadings of 35, 42, and 51% were considered. The results of the study demonstrate that both RANS and large eddy simulation can accurately predict particle roping. Furthermore, simulations show that the roping phenomenon is strongly dependent upon selection of an appropriate value for the coefficient …

Design And Construction Of An Optimum Method To Present Uncertainty Of Convective Weather Forecasts To Air Traffic Personnel, Anna K. Selchow, Austin Wright

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The purpose of this design project was to develop a new weather display for air traffic controllers to utilize that shows the probabilistic hazard information for convective weather forecasts. Multiple iterations of maps were generated and evaluated for overall effectiveness in conveying uncertainty information for convective weather observations and forecasts with the final maps being tested through interviews with retired air traffic personnel. The goal of these maps was to improve upon current convective weather displays to more accurately show uncertainty and probabilistic hazard information to aid the air traffic controllers (ATCs) in providing guidance for aircraft pilots.
