Meeting Real World Demands Of The Global Economy: An Employer's Perspective, Doreen Mcgunagle, Laura Zizka

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

Educational programs prepare students theoretically for the workplace, but many programs are still lacking in the real-world skills that the workplace requires. This is especially evident in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education where today’s graduates hold a fundamental role in advancing science, medicine, sustainability, national security, and the economy, yet the programs to prepare them are falling short of employer expectations. At present, there is a lack of information on the necessary skills for workplace success that is specific to Airline, Aerospace, Defense (A&D) and related Industries’ STEM graduates. This paper attempts to fill this gap by offering …

A Monolithic Internal Strain-Gage Balance Design Based On Design For Manufacturability, Thomas Ladson Webb Iii Jan 2018

A Monolithic Internal Strain-Gage Balance Design Based On Design For Manufacturability, Thomas Ladson Webb Iii

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This paper proposes an alternative approach to internal strain-gage balance design driven by Design for Manufacturability (DFM) principles. The objective of this research was a reduction in fabrication time and, subsequently, cost of a balance by simplifying its design while maintaining basic stiffness and sensitivity. Traditionally, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Langley Research Center (LaRC) balance designs have relied on Electro-Discharge Machining (EDM), which is a precise but slow and, therefore, expensive process. EDM is chosen due to several factors, including material hardness, surface finish, and complex geometry, including blind cuts. The new balance design objectives require no …

Evaluating The Effect Of Turbulence On Aircraft During Landing And Take-Off Phases, Anthony O'Connor, Derek Kearney

Articles

— Low level wind shear and turbulence present a serious safety risk to aircraft during the approach, landing and take-off phases. Low level wind shear has been identified as one of the primary factors for aircraft go-arounds and aborted landings. During any given year, wind shear occurs thousands of times at airports around the world, affecting the arrival and departure of aircraft. This paper has quantified the direct cost of flight Go-arounds. This paper will show the potential savings to the aviation industry. This paper will argue that a solution to the problem of forecasting low level wind shear and …

The Separation Of Shear-Driven Liquid Films From A Sharp Corner, Zahra Sadeghizadeh Jan 2018

The Separation Of Shear-Driven Liquid Films From A Sharp Corner, Zahra Sadeghizadeh

Doctoral Dissertations

"The separation of shear-driven liquid films occurs in many engineering applications such as port fuel injected engines, demisters, and gas transfer lines. Despite the importance of this problem, the details of the interaction between operating parameters such as liquid flow rate, gas velocities and liquid film properties on the forces at the expanding corner are still not clear. To enhance the insight on the complicated interaction between the gas and liquid phases, the shear-driven liquid flow around a corner has been studied both experimentally and analytically in this work. The effect of the complex liquid film structure on liquid mass …

Multitarget Tracking And Terrain-Aided Navigation Using Square-Root Consider Filters, James Samuel Mccabe Jan 2018

Multitarget Tracking And Terrain-Aided Navigation Using Square-Root Consider Filters, James Samuel Mccabe

Doctoral Dissertations

"Filtering is a term used to describe methods that estimate the values of partially observed states, such as the position, velocity, and attitude of a vehicle, using current observations that are corrupted due to various sources, such as measurement noise, transmission dropouts, and spurious information. The study of filtering has been an active focus of research for decades, and the resulting filters have been the cornerstone of many of humankind's greatest technological achievements. However, these achievements are enabled principally by the use of specialized techniques that seek to, in some way, combat the negative impacts that processor roundoff and truncation …

Characterization Of Ionic Liquid Monopropellants For A Multi-Mode Propulsion System, Alex J. Mundahl

Masters Theses

"Multi-mode micropropulsion is a potential game-changing technology enabling rapidly composable small satellites with unprecedented mission flexibility. Maximum mission flexibility requires one shared propellant between the chemical and electric systems. A deep eutectic 1:2 molar ratio mixture of choline-nitrate and glycerol ([Cho][NO3] - glycerol) is investigated as a fuel component in a binary mixture propellant for such a multi-mode micropropulsion. Specifically, binary mixtures of the novel ionic liquid fuel with hydroxyl-ammonium nitrate (HAN) and ammonium nitrate (AN) are considered and compared against the previously investigated propellant [Emim][EtSO4]-HAN. Chemical rocket performance simulations predict this new propellant to have …

Electric solid propellants are advanced solid chemical rocket propellant that can be controlled (ignited, throttled and extinguished) with electric current. Work reported here focuses on application of electric solid propellant in a pulsed electric thruster similar to a pulsed plasma thruster. In the future it may be possible to develop a dual-mode electric solid propellant thruster that is switchable between steady applied electric current chemical mode and pulsed alternating electric current electric mode. Results presented here use a laboratory test thruster to create an arc discharge of 5-20 J per pulse in a cylindrical cavity of propellant. Results for Teflon …

Set-Theoretic Model Reference Adaptive Control Of A Generic Transport Model, Ehsan Arabi, Tansel Yucelen, Nhan T. Nguyen Jan 2018

Set-Theoretic Model Reference Adaptive Control Of A Generic Transport Model, Ehsan Arabi, Tansel Yucelen, Nhan T. Nguyen

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper illustrates an application of a recently developed set-theoretic model reference adaptive control architecture on a generic transport model developed by NASA. The set- theoretic model reference adaptive control allows the system error bound between the state of an uncertain dynamical system and the state of a given reference model to be less than a-priori, user-defined worst-case performance bound. Thus, it has the capability to enforce strict performance guarantees to the adaptively controlled uncertain dynamical systems. specifically, after designing set-theoretic adaptive controllers for both longitudinal and lateral-directional dynamics here, the efficacy of this architecture is illustrated on the NASA …

Application Of Improved Fast Dynamic Allan Variance For The Characterization Of Mems Gyroscope On Uav, Qian Zhang, Xueyun Wang, Shiqian Wang, Chaoying Pei

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) are core components in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). The precision of MEMS sensors is very important when the GPS signal is invalid. However, the precision and performance of MEMS sensors will be degraded by the changing of environment. Therefore, estimation and identification of the various noise terms existing in MEMS sensors are deemed to be necessary. The Allan variance is a common and standard method to analyze MEMS sensors, but it cannot be used to analyze the dynamic characteristics. The dynamic Allan variance (DAVAR) is a sliding version of the Allan variance. It is a practical tool …

Synthetic Jet Actuator-Based Aircraft Tracking Using A Continuous Robust Nonlinear Control Strategy, N. Ramos-Pedroza, W. Mackunis, M. Reyhanoglu

Publications

A robust nonlinear control law that achieves trajectory tracking control for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with synthetic jet actuators (SJAs) is presented in this paper. A key challenge in the control design is that the dynamic characteristics of SJAs are nonlinear and contain parametric uncertainty. The challenge resulting from the uncertain SJA actuator parameters is mitigated via innovative algebraic manipulation in the tracking error system derivation along with a robust nonlinear control law employing constant SJA parameter estimates. A key contribution of the paper is a rigorous analysis of the range of SJA actuator parameter uncertainty within which asymptotic …

Flight Dynamics: Flying Qualities Of Handling Factors Are Engineered Into The Aircraft Design, Nihad E. Daidzic Dec 2017

Flight Dynamics: Flying Qualities Of Handling Factors Are Engineered Into The Aircraft Design, Nihad E. Daidzic

Aviation Department Publications

Flight dynamics is an aerospace engineering discupline that addresses aircraft stability and controllability. It is also mathematically very intensive and is traditionally the most difficult in the pilot training curriculum. Ultimately, it does not matter how good steady-state performance of an aircraft design is if its flying (handling) qualities are deficient. Paradoxically, the first airplane Wright Flyer, was statically and dynamically unstable, had large control authority, and was difficult to fly. We've come a long way since those early days, but stability is still vitally important in aircraft design and flight ops. The focus of this article will be airplane …

Air foil bearings (AFBs) are introduced as promising bearings for oil-free turbomachinery applications. Air foil bearing (AFB) technology has made substantial advancement during the past decades and found its applications in various small turbomachinery. AFBs provide reliable operation at high speed and high temperature with negligible power loss. However, rotordynamic instability, friction and drag during the start/stop, and thermal management are still challenges for further application of the technology. Hybrid Air Foil Bearing (HAFB) technology utilizes the radial injection of externally pressurized air into the traditional hydrodynamic AFB’s film thickness through orifices attached to the top foil. HAFB is one …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive

An efficient methodology for design of aircraft composite wing structures is presented. The developed approach provides a flexible and integrated strategy to leverage advantages of composite material tow steering to achieve more effective wing designs. This is accomplished by including the coupling between OML geometry, aerodynamics and structural response. Structural and aerodynamic analyses are derived from parametric aircraft geometry and assembled into a framework for aero-structural wing sizing. A Ritz equivalent plate solution is extended to model composite materials with variable fiber path geometry. The structural modeling approach is implemented to automate creation of both Ritz and finite element analyses. …

A Micromechnics Approach To Predicting The Onset Yielding Envelope Of Particulate Composite Materials, Behrooz Karimi Dec 2017

A Micromechnics Approach To Predicting The Onset Yielding Envelope Of Particulate Composite Materials, Behrooz Karimi

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Composite materials fail for various reasons and extensive research has been conducted both experimentally and theoretically. However, theoretical prediction of composite failure by yielding seems scarce. Adding reinforcing elements to matrix significantly affects the structural behavior of composite materials. The inserted particles on one hand obstruct the progress of cracks and on the other hand cause stress concentration on the interface of the particle-matrix and eventually influence the ultimate strength of the material. In this research, we study the interface stresses and strength in particulate reinforced composites under uniform mechanical and thermal loading. We theoretically obtain failure envelopes for particulate …

Numerical Study Of Droplet Evaporation, Ritul Gandhi

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

Droplet evaporation plays a vital role in various engineering fields such as air/fuel premixing, inkjet printing and many more. The high rate of power dissipation from the integrated circuits and chips of electronic devices creates a need for cooling it to achieve their optimal functionality. The high rate of cooling can be achieved by thin film evaporation of water by phase change as compared to the air cooling methods. Therefore, the study of droplet evaporation is necessary to understand the underlying physics and effects of different parameters on cooling performance. Numerical study of droplet evaporation has been done by using …

Space Launch Vehicle Design: Conceptual Design Of Rocket Powered, Vertical Takeoff, Fully Expendable And First Stage Boostback Space Launch Vehicles, David Michael Woodward

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

Engineering design can be broken down into three phases: conceptual design, preliminary design, and detailed design. During the conceptual design phase, several potential configurations are studied towards the identification of the baseline vehicle. Although the least amount of detail is known about the design during the early conceptual design phase, the decisions made during this phase lock in major features effecting life-cycle cost and overall product success. As the next big space race begins, it is critically important to have a readily available tool for launch vehicle designers that is intuitive to use, easy to modify, cost effective, and provides …
