Multiple companies are exploring the use of autonomous flight for intra-city travel with air taxi services and package delivery vehicles. Other companies are exploring the use of autonomous vehicles for military applications, such as Sikorsky with a next generation Black Hawk helicopter to ensure the safety of soldiers in high threat or altogether dangerous scenarios. In this thesis model predictive control (MPC) algorithms are developed to enable a quadcopter to operate and land autonomously in challenging environments. Specifically, MPC …
Dynamic Estimation Of Large-Scale Flow Events In Open Cavity Flows, Alexandre Mota
Dynamic Estimation Of Large-Scale Flow Events In Open Cavity Flows, Alexandre Mota
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Flow over an open cavity has a dynamically complex flowfield, generating pressure fluctuations that can amplify shear stress and cause structural damage to the stores within it and the aircraft as a whole. These pressure loads are linked to large-scale resonant shear layer phenomena. Consequently, it is crucial to establish this link by characterizing the large-scale flow events conditional upon pressure measurements to improve the prediction and control of the detrimental pressure fluctuations. In this study, a link between the pressure measurements (to control) and large-scale shear layer events (to actuate) will be established using a combination of two data-driven …

Suppression Of Dynamic Aeroelastic Response Of A Semispan Wing Using Traditional And Distributed Sensing, James Ramey
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Characterization and management of aeroelastic effects are a vital part of aircraft design. Mitigation of these effects often includes control systems to suppress the vibrations. Control systems are constantly being developed and improved, with one such avenue of development being new sensing systems that can increase the information fed into the controller. Fiber Optic Strain Sensing (FOSS) technology is one such system that utilizes Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs) on a fiber optic cable to sense the strain on structural elements. This system has promise as a high-density feedback device, and the maturation of the technology has allowed assessment of its …

Adaptive Control And Estimation Of The Center Of Mass Of A 5-Degree-Of-Freedom Spacecraft Testbed, Pol Fontdegloria Balaguer
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
In space applications, on-ground experimentation is an essential step in control algorithm validation before real mission application. However, on-ground conditions greatly differ from space ones, where satellites operate under extremely low gravity and friction conditions. A common way to simulate these conditions is with air-bearing-based testbeds. These testbeds reduce friction significantly to almost space-like conditions. Air-bearing technology can provide virtually frictionless translational and rotational motion. However, when frictionless rotational motion is achieved, the testbed becomes highly sensible gravity torque. This external torque is produced by the offset between the predetermined geometrical center of rotation (CoR) and the center …

Overcoming Contamination Obstacles In Additive Manufacturing A Monolithic Propulsion Structure For The Sunrise Mission, Holly Walen, Emma Brown, Robert Fowler
Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications
The SunRISE propulsion system utilizes an additively manufactured monolithic structure containing a main tank, plenum, and six thrusters. The complex design geometry and novel manufacturing approach of this structure lends itself to several problems, primarily related to the consistent fabrication of the thruster channels. Standard cleaning methods for stereolithography printing were inadequate to meet program requirements for this structure, leading to the development of a rigorous cleaning approach and intermediate characterization of the thruster throughput during the manufacturing process. In this paper, we present the cleaning and characterization approach that lent to the successful manufacturing of the SunRISE propulsion structure.

The authors use historical information obtained from the Cost Assessment Data Enterprise to estimate recurring production unit cost for DoD avionics via cost estimating relationships (CERs). The specific modeled responses include mean unit cost, median unit cost, and the 100th production unit cost (T100) utilizing learning curve theory. For T100, the authors adopt both a multiplicative and an additive error for CER comparison. Recommended CERs consist of the mean unit cost and the T100 utilizing a multiplicative error. Moreover, results reveal that weight has a significant effect on cost as well as a potential underaccounting of real price change or …

Boosting Predictive Accuracy Of Single Particle Models For Lithium-Ion Batteries Using Machine Learning, Emmanuel Olugbade, Jonghyun Park
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The accuracy of single particle (SP) models for lithium-ion batteries at high C-rates is constrained by lithium concentration gradients in the electrolyte, which affect ionic conductivity, overpotential, and reaction rates. This study addresses these limitations using extreme gradient boosting machine learning (ML). By training our ML model with data from a comprehensive electrochemical (P2D) model and performing sensitivity analysis on key battery parameters, we enhance predictive accuracy. Compared to conventional SP and P2D models under constant current loading, our ML-based SP model achieves similar predictive accuracy to P2D, with significant improvements in computational efficiency. Additionally, the ML-based SP model demonstrates …

Rocky planets may acquire a primordial atmosphere by the outgassing of volatiles from their magma ocean. The distribution of O between H2O, CO, and CO2 in chemical equilibrium subsequently changes significantly with decreasing temperature. We consider here two chemical models: one where CH4 and NH3 are assumed to be irrevocably destroyed by photolysis and second where these molecules persist. In the first case, we show that CO cannot coexist with H2O, since CO oxidizes at low temperatures to form CO2 and H2. In both cases, H escapes from the thermosphere within a few 10 million years by absorption of stellar …

A recommended operating envelope for the plasma source was established through single-point measurements by varying the discharge currents of the plasma source and the gas flow rates. A three-axis translation stage was fabricated and tested with 2D and 3D scans of the simulated plasma environment. The measured plasma density during this study was between 1:63 x 1012 − 3:1 x 1012 m−3 for the electrons and 7:54 x 1012 − 1:82 x 1013 m−3 for the ions, whereas the electron …
Surrogate-Based Multidisciplinary Optimization For The Takeoff Trajectory Design Of Electric Drones, Samuel Sisk, Xiaosong Du
Surrogate-Based Multidisciplinary Optimization For The Takeoff Trajectory Design Of Electric Drones, Samuel Sisk, Xiaosong Du
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft attract attention due to their unique characteristics of reduced noise, moderate pollutant emission, and lowered operating cost. However, the benefits of electric vehicles, including eVTOL aircraft, are critically challenged by the energy density of batteries, which prohibit long-distance tasks and broader applications. Since the takeoff process of eVTOL aircraft demands excessive energy and couples multiple subsystems (such as aerodynamics and propulsion), multidisciplinary analysis and optimization (MDAO) become essential. Conventional MDAO, however, iteratively evaluates high-fidelity simulation models, making the whole process computationally intensive. Surrogates, in lieu of simulation models, empower efficient MDAO with the …
Heuristic Design Of Cislunar Space Situational Awareness Architectures, Jacob A. Dahlke
Heuristic Design Of Cislunar Space Situational Awareness Architectures, Jacob A. Dahlke
Theses and Dissertations
The growing interest in the cislunar domain, which encompasses geosynchronous Earth orbit (GEO), the Moon, and the region where Earth-Moon gravitational effects are the primary influence, necessitates the development of tools to ensure safe and successful exploration. Space situational awareness (SSA) involves monitoring an environment to detect, track, identify, and catalog space objects. While most SSA experience comes from near-Earth operations, expanding into the cislunar domain presents significant challenges due to its vast expanse—greater than 10 times the radius of GEO—and the unique dynamics governed by the Circular Restricted Three-Body Problem (CR3BP) influenced by both Earth and Moon gravitational forces. …

Theses and Dissertations
On-orbit inspection is a rapidly growing mission that enables extending the life of aging legacy space systems through refueling, replacing, or upgrading components. For an inspection operation, multiple agents taking observations simultaneously can more quickly map an RSO and assure an inspection is complete regardless of RSO dynamics. A multi-agent guidance, navigation, and control (GNC) scheme must be designed with cooperation in mind to achieve inspection objectives, while leveraging the unique capabilities of a distributed inspection system. This work splits the GNC system into two parts composed of an offline guidance scheme for translational reference trajectory generation and an online …
Koopman-Based Modeling For Nonlinear Control Of Multirotor Uavs, Simone Martini
Koopman-Based Modeling For Nonlinear Control Of Multirotor Uavs, Simone Martini
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This PhD dissertation focuses on adopting the emerging Koopman Operator theory for modeling and nonlinear control of multirotor UAVs, focusing specifically on quadrotors for proof-of-concept demonstration purposes.
The Koopman Operator theory is based on the foundation that nonlinear dynamics in the state space may be represented as a linear evolution of some functions in the state space. Thus, using appropriately defined and possibly nonlinear functions of the state variables, called observables, as a new and maybe infinite set of coordinates that are referred to as lifted space, the original nonlinear dynamics appear to be linear. The implications of this theory …
Contributions To The Understanding Of Turbulent Boundary Layers Over Curved Walls, Nicholas Zhu
Contributions To The Understanding Of Turbulent Boundary Layers Over Curved Walls, Nicholas Zhu
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
A wind tunnel campaign was conducted to investigate the DARPA Suboff boundary layer. To emphasize the axisymmetric boundary layer, the generic submarine model's sail, appendages, and propeller were omitted. The study focused on the afterbody from 70–95% of the model length to examine the concurrent pressure gradient and wall curvature effects, which are commonplace in engineering. Three particle image velocimetry (PIV) configurations were employed to measure the boundary layer in detail: one spanned the entire afterbody, another had narrow strips sampled at 16 kHz, and the third used two simultaneous orthogonal measurement planes. Considerable effort was made to reduce the …

End-To-End Full-Width Induction Welding Of Unidirectional Tape-Based Thermoplastic Composites, Jaspreet Singh Pandher
Theses and Dissertations
The current large scale application of thermoset composite materials in large, twin aisle, civil transport aircraft have resulted in significant performance enhancements, such as aerodynamic efficiency, weight reduction, and durability. These large aircraft are, however, produced in relatively low numbers. For the next generation smaller single aisle aircraft, large scale applications of composites are of interest in the airframe. Application of composites in single aisle aircraft will require not only proof of similar and/or significant performance improvements, but also proof of adequate manufacturing rates. One option to achieve both is large scale application of thermoplastic instead of thermoset composites.

Heat Transfer To Arrays Of Oscillating Impingement Jets, Alex Q. Clay
Heat Transfer To Arrays Of Oscillating Impingement Jets, Alex Q. Clay
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
In gas turbine engines, the desire to increase turbine entry temperatures has become more relevant in order to increase engine efficiency. However, materials used in these engines can only withstand temperatures that are so high. Because of this, the ability to cool hot section components will always limit operating temperatures. Impingement cooling jets have become a common way of cooling due to the high rates of heat transfer that can be achieved. However, previous research has shown that the interaction of impingement jets with cylinder wake can improve the intensity and uniformity of heat transfer. The goal of this study …

We investigate unsteady, two-dimensional laminar fluid flow around cylinders, focusing on understanding the impact of injecting methane gas through two diametrically opposite arcs on the cylinder in the crossflow of the second fluid. This study encompasses applications in mixing and dispersion, which are crucial in various technological and natural processes. Our analysis addresses velocity field’s contribution to the spatiotemporal distribution of transported quantities. We observed that mixing induces a transition from laminar to turbulent flow. Depending on the injected-to-crossflow velocity ratios, the wake vortices downstream of cylinder arrays separate from or connect to the injected gas. This phenomenon significantly impacts …
