Development Of A Data Acquisition System For Common Velocity Anemometers, Dane P. Drefke Jan 1993

Development Of A Data Acquisition System For Common Velocity Anemometers, Dane P. Drefke

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

The objective of this project was to develop a software package that would allow more efficient, accurate, and easier use of wind tunnel data. The software was to receive an analog signal from an array of hot wire anemometers, convert the signal to a digital format, and then process the raw data, converting it into values of properties which have practical value to the user. Unfortunately, due to scheduling conflicts, this project never left the software development stage. The user interface was successfully designed. The signal conversion portion of the package was not completed and the package was never tested.

Experimental Investigation On The Longitudinal Stability Of A P51 Mustang Aircraft Model, Erich Fitzpatrick Jan 1993

Experimental Investigation On The Longitudinal Stability Of A P51 Mustang Aircraft Model, Erich Fitzpatrick

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

This project involved the development of a test model of the P-51 Mustang aircraft and an experimental investigation of its stability. The model was developed to investigate the influence of the main horizontal tail parameters ( tail incidence, position of c.g., stabilizer moment arm, etc.)on the pitching moment around the aircraft’s center of gravity. To accomplish such a task, a test model was designed and fabricated with flat plate and airfoil wing configurations. The tail incidence of the flat plate stabilizer is adjustable over the entire range of positive and negative angles. A rechargeable, electric motor mounted in the fuselage adjusts …

Aerodynamics Of Solar Vehicles, Richard R. Pardun Jan 1993

Aerodynamics Of Solar Vehicles, Richard R. Pardun

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

The purpose of this research project is to design the shape of a fully road worthy vehicle operating under nothing but the power of the sun. This vehicle was to meet all racing regulations of The Sunrayce and the World Solar Challenge. Because of the specific use of this vehicle, this project provides a chance to explore the aerodynamically ideal vehicle. Little attention has to be paid to practicality. The result is a very streamlined, highly aerodynamically efficient car, that is still stable and safe.

Analysis Of A Thrust Vectoring Fighter Aircraft Using Realtime Flight Simulation, Clinton A. Thessen Jan 1993

Analysis Of A Thrust Vectoring Fighter Aircraft Using Realtime Flight Simulation, Clinton A. Thessen

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

A real-time flight simulation model based on the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet was created. This model was then modified with two different styles of thrust vectoring so that a study of each system's effect on the aircraft's pitch performance could be conducted in order to determine the best system. At present, work is proceeding on the development of active flight controls for the aircraft. After that effort is completed the thrust vectoring study can begin.

The Cost Of Doing A Cost Estimate, Donald S. Remer, Harry R. Buchanan Jan 1993

The Cost Of Doing A Cost Estimate, Donald S. Remer, Harry R. Buchanan

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

There are many reasons for cost overruns, but one of the key factors it the lack of resources (time, money, and staffing) spent to do proper up-front cost estimates. Another major reason is that the implements were not involved in the estimating. The purpose of this article is to address the issue of the cost to do a cost estimate [8]. We will report on how others handle this issue and make suggestions on how the Deep Space Network (DSN) should estimate the amount to spend on a cost estimate and its impact on reducing the probability of a cost …

Analytical Guidance Laws And Integrated Guidance/Autopilot For Homing Missiles, S. N. Balakrishnan, Donald T. Stansbery, J. H. Evers, J. R. Cloutier

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An approach to integrated guidance/autopilot design is considered in this study. It consists of two parts: 1) recognizing the importance of polar coordinates to describe the end game in terms of problem description and measurement acquisition, the terminal guidance problem is formulated in terms of polar coordinates; 2a) through the use of the state transition matrix of the intercept dynamics, a closed form solution for the transverse command acceleration is obtained; and 2b) through a commonly used approximation on time-to-go and a coordinate transformation, a family of proportional navigation optimal guidance laws is obtained in a closed form. A typical …

Theoretical Results Supporting The Use Of Passive Damping As Augmentation To The Active Control Of Flexible Structures, Joseph Vincent Harrell Jan 1993

Theoretical Results Supporting The Use Of Passive Damping As Augmentation To The Active Control Of Flexible Structures, Joseph Vincent Harrell

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

One challenge of modern control technology is how to control a flexible structure with accuracy, speed, and economy of effort. Controlling a structure with many degrees of freedom by purely active means implies the implementation of inordinate sensors and actuators and creates the need for numerous calculations that must be done instantly. Experiments have shown that practical structures under active control alone can suffer instabilities due to modal vibrations beyond the bandwidth of the active controller. Furthermore, if there is a high degree of model uncertainty, instabilities can be produced by inputs of modal vibrations not occurring in the system …

On Minimizing Thermal Deflections Of Laminated Plates, Serge Abrate Jan 1993

On Minimizing Thermal Deflections Of Laminated Plates, Serge Abrate

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Thermal deflections of symmetrically laminated plates that are continuous over many line supports are determined using the Rayleigh-Ritz method. The constitutive equations and the thermal loads are expressed in terms of four non-dimensional lamination parameters. Layups that minimize thermal deflections are determined for several types of composite plates subjected to temperature increases that vary linearly through the thickness.

Design And Implementation Of Fuzzy Logic Controllers. Thesis Final Report, 27 July 1992 - 1 January 1993, Osama A. Abihana, Oscar R. Gonzalez

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The main objectives of our research are to present a self-contained overview of fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic, develop a methodology for control system design using fuzzy logic controllers, and to design and implement a fuzzy logic controller for a real system. We first present the fundamental concepts of fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic. Fuzzy sets and basic fuzzy operations are defined. In addition, for control systems, it is important to understand the concepts of linguistic values, term sets, fuzzy rule base, inference methods, and defuzzification methods. Second, we introduce a four-step fuzzy logic control system design procedure. The design …

Computer Simulation Of Three-Dimensional Mechanical Assemblies: Part Ii - Computer Simulation, T. C. Chou, Frank W. Liou Jan 1993

Computer Simulation Of Three-Dimensional Mechanical Assemblies: Part Ii - Computer Simulation, T. C. Chou, Frank W. Liou

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Computer simulation of the kinematic and dynamic behaviors of mechanical assemblies has become a very important tool in design and manufacturing, because the designer can foresee how a product is going to perform before the product is actually fabricated. However, up to now, the most current simulation modules are based on analysis from another kinematic or dynamic module by specifying the mating conditions between components, and then displaying the motion on the screen. This computer simulation actually performs similarly to a movie and can only provide visual checking. The drawback of this simulation approach is that designers are forced to …

On The Use Of Levy's Method For Symmetrically Laminated Composite Plates, Serge Abrate Jan 1993

On The Use Of Levy's Method For Symmetrically Laminated Composite Plates, Serge Abrate

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

For rectangular plates with two opposite edges simply supported and no bending twisting coupling, Levy's method can yield exact solutions for static deflections, free vibrations and buckling loads. However, three distinct solutions are obtained, depending on the relative magnitude of the plate rigidities, which in turn are functions of material properties, laminate thickness and lay-up. In this communication a stiffness invariant formulation is used to identify those laminates which fall under the three cases defined. © 1993.

Observations On Higher-Order Beam Theory, A. Bhimaraddi, K. Chandrashekhara Jan 1993

Observations On Higher-Order Beam Theory, A. Bhimaraddi, K. Chandrashekhara

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A parabolic shear-deformation beam theory assuming a higher-order variation for axial displacement has been recently presented. In this theory, the axial displacement variation can be selected so that it results in a suitable admissible transverse shear-strain variation across the depth of the beam. This paper examines several transverse shear-strain variations that can go with the aforementioned higher-order theory. Apart from the usual simple parabolic variation, six other shear-strain variations are considered: the sinusoidal variation, cubic, quartic, quintic, and sixth-order polynomials. All these variations for transverse shear-strain satisfy the requirement that the shear strain be zero at the extreme fibers (z …

Simplified Jet-A Kinetic Mechanism For Combustor Application, Bahman Ghorashi, Chi-Ming Lee, Krishna Kundu Jan 1993

Simplified Jet-A Kinetic Mechanism For Combustor Application, Bahman Ghorashi, Chi-Ming Lee, Krishna Kundu

Scholarship Collection

Successful modeling of combustion and emissions in gas turbine engine combustors requires an adequate description of the reaction mechanism. For hydrocarbon oxidation, detailed mechanisms are only available for the simplest types of hydrocarbons such as methane, ethane, acetylene, and propane. These detailed mechanisms contain a large number of chemical species participating simultaneously in many elementary kinetic steps. Current computational fluid dynamic (CFD) models must include fuel vaporization, fuel-air mixing, chemical reactions, and complicated boundary geometries. To simulate these conditions a very sophisticated computer model is required, which requires large computer memory capacity and long run times. Therefore, gas turbine combustion …

Utilizing Instructional Design Constructs To Enhance Computer-Based Instruction In Air Traffic Controller Training, Theodore Scott Rhoads Dec 1992

Utilizing Instructional Design Constructs To Enhance Computer-Based Instruction In Air Traffic Controller Training, Theodore Scott Rhoads

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

This study demonstrates that a computer-based instructional design format is appropriate for novice air traffic control (ATC) training. The computer presents the student with small amounts of information in tutorial and drill and practice sequences that necessitate student interactivity. The student is then periodically audit tested to ascertain mastery of the subject matter. The result of these mid-lesson evaluations serve as a self-check so that the student can assess his/her progress in the learning cycle. The systematic design of instruction and interactive approach to learning, enhances student motivation, improves learning and retention, while placing the responsibility of achieving specific learning …

Thermally Induced Vibration Of A Cross-Ply Laminated Plate With Hygrothermal Effects (Exact Solution), Stephen Jerry Maerz Dec 1992

Thermally Induced Vibration Of A Cross-Ply Laminated Plate With Hygrothermal Effects (Exact Solution), Stephen Jerry Maerz

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Of increasing importance in structural design is the use of fiber-reinforced polymeric composite material, notably in advanced aircraft and projectiles. These applications expose the materials to varied environmental conditions, therefore the material performance under these conditions is of great interest. One aspect of this is the solution of the dynamic response of a composite structure under elevated temperature and moisture conditions. An exact solution is formulated which describes the hygrothermal effects due to heating and moisture diffusion on one surface of a symmetric cross-ply plate made of AS/3501 graphite epoxy with simply-supported boundary conditions.

Isolating Failure Mechanisms In A Fiberglass/Epoxy Tensile Test Specimen Using Acoustic Emission Signal Parameters, Michael Kouvarakos Dec 1992

Isolating Failure Mechanisms In A Fiberglass/Epoxy Tensile Test Specimen Using Acoustic Emission Signal Parameters, Michael Kouvarakos

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

This study used acoustic emission (AE) signal parameters to isolate the failure mechanisms in a 0° unidirectional, fiberglass/epoxy tensile test specimen. Since several failure mechanisms were known to be present, the lack of any distinctly identifiable bands in the original amplitude distribution indicated that there was considerable overlap between the AE signals of the various failure mechanisms. In order to separate the amplitude bands associated with each mechanism, it was necessary to sort on the duration of the AE signal. Two additional plots, counts versus amplitude and hits versus counts, were used to verify that the amplitude distributions were comprised …

Helicopter Flight Control System Design Using The Linear Quadratic Regulator For Robust Eigenstructure Assignment, Dempsey D. Solomon Dec 1992

Helicopter Flight Control System Design Using The Linear Quadratic Regulator For Robust Eigenstructure Assignment, Dempsey D. Solomon

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis applied modern, multi-variable control design techniques, via a FORTRAN computer algorithm, to U.S. Army helicopter models in hovering flight conditions. Eigenstructure assignment and Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) theory are used to achieve enhanced closed loop performance and stability characteristics with full state feedback. The addition of cross coupling weights to the standard LQR performance index is specifically addressed. A desired eigenstructure is chosen with a goal of reduced pilot workload via performance qualities requirements. Cross coupling weighting is shown to provide greater flexibility in achieving a desired closed loop eigenstructure. While the addition of cross coupling weighting is …

A Comparison Of Computational Fluid Dynamics Computer Programs For Hypersonic Propulsive Nozzle Flowfields, Kennedy B. Wilson Jr. Dec 1992

A Comparison Of Computational Fluid Dynamics Computer Programs For Hypersonic Propulsive Nozzle Flowfields, Kennedy B. Wilson Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

This study compared the results of two computer programs, a flux- difference-splitting (FDS) Godunov-based scheme and the SCPAMjet Hypersonic Nozzle (SCHNOZ) paraobolized Navier-Stoke's code using MacCormack's method, applied to a hypersonic nozzle flowfield. Two different nozzle geometries were investigated at three Mach numbers along a typical hypersonic flight trajectory. A direct compariosn between the SCHNOZ and FDS programs was made by numerically solving the steady Euler equations using a frozen flow assumption in the nozzle. The frozen flow SCHNOZ code is currently 6 to 10 times more efficient in terms of computational time than the FDS frozen flow code. The …

A Synthetic Environment For Satellite Modeling And Satellite Orbital Motion, David L. Pond Dec 1992

A Synthetic Environment For Satellite Modeling And Satellite Orbital Motion, David L. Pond

Theses and Dissertations

Analysts tasked to study satellites moving in space must often rely on photographs to conduct their analysis. Often these photographs do not adequately represent how satellites move in space, their spatial relationships, or their interaction with other satellites. What analysts need is a three- dimensional synthetic environment that depicts satellites as they actually move and interact in space. This thesis addresses the early development of the Satellite Modeler (SM), a system that allows analysts to study, satellite motion and maneuvering of computer aided design (CAD) models of those satellites in a three-dimensional orbit. The system contains equipment that allows analysts …

The limitations and advantages of both methods were considered. Loading arrangements included concentrated forces as well as moments.

Extended Lyapunov Exponents For Second Order Systems, Janice M. Horn Dec 1992

Extended Lyapunov Exponents For Second Order Systems, Janice M. Horn

Theses and Dissertations

It is shown that the concept of the Lyapunov exponent can be extended to include an imaginary part. A numerical technique used to calculate these extended Lyapunov exponents for second order systems is presented. There are two requirements to make this extension possible: the definition of a coordinate frame on the tangent space of the differential equation, and an extension of the classical limit, called the limit of the mean. An application of the technique to the van der Pol equation for the constant coefficient and periodic coefficient cases is given. The extended Lyapunov exponents found using this technique totally …

Theses and Dissertations

A propulsion configuration it defined for a precision orbital tracking vehicle (POTV) that employs electrodynamic forces to control vehicle attitude and position with respect to another spacecraft. A pair of electrically powered thrusters assist the POTV in position control. The vehicle can maintain continuous standoff at close range from another spacecraft in any direction, has docking capability, and has gross orbital transfer capability. These capabilities and the specific design derived for the POTV have been defined by the requirements of a postulated space facility (ASSET) that salvages structural aluminum from the external fuel tank of the space shuttle. Precision control …

Effect Of Transverse Vibration On The Capillary Limit Of A Wrapped Screen Wick Copper/Water Heat Pipe, Mark C. Charlton Dec 1992

Effect Of Transverse Vibration On The Capillary Limit Of A Wrapped Screen Wick Copper/Water Heat Pipe, Mark C. Charlton

Theses and Dissertations

The effect of transverse vibration on the capillary limit of a copper/water heat pipe with a tightly wrapped screen wick was investigated. The capillary limit was measured over a range of operating temperatures under static conditions. A bench-top shaker was used to provide vibration normal to the longitudinal axis of the pipe, and the capillary limit was measured at vibration frequencies of 30, 250, and 1000 Hz. At each of these frequencies, tests were run at vibration levels of 1.0, 2.5, and 5.0 G. The pipe was maintained at a zero degree inclination angle and power throughput was increased until …

An Approximate Solution For The Linearized Spinup Dynamics Of A Dual-Spin Spacecraft, David L. Kinney Dec 1992

An Approximate Solution For The Linearized Spinup Dynamics Of A Dual-Spin Spacecraft, David L. Kinney

Theses and Dissertations

An approximate solution is obtained for the linearized equations of motion for the spinup dynamics of a dual-spin spacecraft. The approximation is obtained from the WKB (Wentzel, Kramers, and Brillouin) method, which usually generates a divergent series. Comparison between the WKB solution and the numerically integrated solution are used to study the effects of spinup torque magnitude and the number of WKB terms used on the accuracy of the approximation. The WKB method generates accurate approximations for small spinup torques using as few as two terms in the series when no singularities are present in the WKB terms during the …

Data Reduction With Least Squares Differential Correction Using Equinoctial Elements, Michael S. Wasson Dec 1992

Data Reduction With Least Squares Differential Correction Using Equinoctial Elements, Michael S. Wasson

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates earth satellite orbit estimation on a track of range, azimuth, and elevation data from a single tracking station. The estimation routine is a least squares batch filter based solely on two-body orbital motion. Using equinoctial elements for the reference orbit avoids the numerical difficulties of the classical elements at eccentricities near zero and inclinations near zero or 90 degrees. Orbits for Mir, DMSP, Explorer, Cosmos, and GPS are investigated. The goal of this study is to reduce orbit information from observations (range, azimuth, and elevation) to an element set and a covariance matrix without considering perturbation effects. …

Weight shapes and locations are investigated for H2, H, and the general mixed H2/H infinity optimization methodologies. The design model is normal acceleration command following for the F-16 (SISO) at Mach 0.6 and Sea Level, which yields a nonminimum phase and unstable plant. H2 design types include LQG, LQG/Sensitivity, and LQG/Tracking. Robustness and tracking are the objectives of the central H infinity process. Both H optimal and suboptimal controllers are examined, with the suboptimal controller shown as the practical choice for this plant. The mixed H2/H setup allows the tradeoff between …

Characterization Of Stall Inception In High-Speed Single-Stage Compressors, Keith M. Boyer Dec 1992

Characterization Of Stall Inception In High-Speed Single-Stage Compressors, Keith M. Boyer

Theses and Dissertations

Two single-stage, transonic compressor designs were tested under various undistorted operating conditions to characterize the process leading up to aerodynamic stall. The rig case was instrumented with eight high-response static pressure transducers equally spaced around the annulus for stall development detection. High-response measurements were low-pass filtered and both spatially and temporally analyzed using discrete Fourier techniques. At all speeds tested for both designs, stall inception was characterized by growth of a small amplitude' rotating wave. The waves did not grow significantly until just prior to the instability, when exponential growth into fully-developed rotating stall occurred very rapidly, within 6-10 rotor …
