Heal, Not Harm: Embracing A Trauma-Informed Approach As An Act Of Transformative Care, Carrie R. Giboney Wall Oct 2024

Heal, Not Harm: Embracing A Trauma-Informed Approach As An Act Of Transformative Care, Carrie R. Giboney Wall

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

Desperate to decrease problematic student behaviors and increase desirable ones, many teachers employ traditional behaviorist models of discipline through the use of rewards or punishments. Although well-meaning and perhaps temporarily effective, these transactional barter systems can do more harm than good, especially for students who are trauma-impacted. By disrupting these practices that can re-traumatize students and embracing trauma-informed practices, teachers can extend transformative care to students and promote healing. The purpose of this qualitative investigation was to explore the manifestations of trauma on student classroom behavior and learning at a Title I public elementary school as well as multipronged elements …

Integrated Care: Transforming Beginning Teachers And Students With Ebd, Amy V. Flagler

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

This research examined the experiences and self-efficacy of beginning teachers who work with students with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD) in the general education classroom. Supported by the work of Bandura (1977, 1997) on teacher self-efficacy and Noddings (2013) on the ethic of care, this qualitative case study implemented semi-structured interviews to gather data on beginning teachers’ confidence and struggles in meeting the needs of students with EBD. The findings revealed beginning teachers of students with EBD are caregivers in need of specific care to meet both their own needs and those of their students. Implications for educator preparation providers …

Transformative Care Through Alternative Assessment Practices, Tyler Watts, Amy Flagler Oct 2024

Transformative Care Through Alternative Assessment Practices, Tyler Watts, Amy Flagler

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

This essay explores assessment practices and the ways in which grading can inhibit authentic care and undermine our work as educators seeking to embody the work of Christ in our classrooms. Beginning with an exploration of grading history, the essay reviews the challenges with our current grading models and the detrimental effect grades can have on students and their learning experience. Through reflecting on the concept of transformative care, alternative assessment practices are offered as a way to recognize the injustices associated with grading and shift to models that advocate for greater care and connection with learners. The essay offers …

In And Out Of The Silence: Connecting Waiting Worship With Transformative Care, Neil E. Cantrall, Scot Headley, Catherine Parry, Jim Wilkins-Luton Oct 2024

In And Out Of The Silence: Connecting Waiting Worship With Transformative Care, Neil E. Cantrall, Scot Headley, Catherine Parry, Jim Wilkins-Luton

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

This essay offers an in-depth view into the transformative care experienced by four educators who found community and soul care through regular, online meetings framed around the Quaker tradition of silent, unprogrammed worship. The four colleagues were initially brought together through participation in a doctoral program, and began meeting online when the COVID-19 pandemic shifted the program’s traditional face-to-face summer residency to a virtual format. They formed solid bonds and found deep meaning through the soul care provided by the weekly meetings. As a result, the group found that the transformative care provided for each other began to naturally overflow …

Slow Sabbath: An Exploration Of Postures, Places, And Spaces For Being With God, Hearing His Voice, And Receiving His Care, Cathy E. Freytag Oct 2024

Slow Sabbath: An Exploration Of Postures, Places, And Spaces For Being With God, Hearing His Voice, And Receiving His Care, Cathy E. Freytag

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

While the notion of Sabbath will not be unfamiliar to most readers of this journal, the importance of embracing – and perhaps reconceptualizing – Sabbath as an essential element of responsive soul care might not emerge at the top of one’s list of self-care priorities. Yet, in order to serve those entrusted to our care with the very best we can offer, we must care responsively for ourselves (see Luke 10:27). Previously, I have made the case that embracing Sabbath is a critical component in a healthy, sustainable approach to nourishing self care for the Christian educator (Freytag, 2016). In …

The Collapse And Revival Of The Teacher Soul- A Study Of Resilience In Experienced Elementary Teachers, Joadie Durfee Oct 2024

The Collapse And Revival Of The Teacher Soul- A Study Of Resilience In Experienced Elementary Teachers, Joadie Durfee

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Sustaining talented teachers has become a challenging worldwide pursuit. Even the most successful teachers are exiting the profession at alarming rates (Clandinin et al., 2012; Mason & Matas, 2015). Although seemingly all teachers experience highly stressful factors in the workplace, some remain and continue to thrive as they inspire and help countless students through their educational pursuits. To better understand this contrast and promote quality teachers to remain in the profession to retirement, I conducted a qualitative study of three passionate, experienced, highly effective teachers who have considered leaving the profession but ultimately decided to stay. Using interview and artifact …

Storytelling As Assessment And Assessment As Storytelling: Reading And Writing Equity, Julene L. Jones, Mary K. Thompson, Co-Creating Action, Watermark

Library Presentations

Wrestling with both the language of storytelling and the language of narrative, this presentation repositions assessment work as creative and historical, giving a double responsibility to its authors. How we speak of education and how we use this information to improve it begs the questions of character and audience. In these questions is the larger consideration of equity. This presentation explores what storytelling as an art can teach us about the institutional stories we are telling.

The Experiences Of Men As A Gender Minority In Early Childhood Workplaces, Julian Laferla Oct 2024

The Experiences Of Men As A Gender Minority In Early Childhood Workplaces, Julian Laferla

Graduate Teacher Education

Men comprise a small percentage of the early childhood education and care workforce worldwide. Men represent only three percent of the preschool workforce in the United States (US Bureau of Labor Statistics, Department of Labor, 2023). A review of the literature revealed challenges men commonly face as a gender minority in a female-dominated field. These challenges include the transgression of traditional beliefs about masculinity, structural barriers like low pay and poor working conditions, and workplace challenges like exclusion, double standards, gatekeeping, and suspicion of sexual threat. Research showed that men can contribute to the field through pedagogic practices that support …

Understanding The “L” In Cslp Within The Literacy Conundrum, Julia Lynch, Andrea Perrone Oct 2024

Understanding The “L” In Cslp Within The Literacy Conundrum, Julia Lynch, Andrea Perrone

Michigan Reading Journal

Rooted in culturally relevant pedagogy, culturally sustaining literacy practices (CSLP) focus on equity in education (Gay, 2000; Ladson-Billings, 1995; Paris, 2012). Our view of CSLP emphasizes integrating the arts into literacy instruction to leverage students' cultural assets, stimulating their cognitive processes and recognizing literacy's interdisciplinary role in learning. As we align literacy practices with state standards, high-stakes testing, and research-based methods, it's crucial for educators and society to embrace them. Traditionally, literacy instruction has prioritized written language, creating hierarchical structures that lead to learning gaps and inequitable opportunities. An arts-based CSLP framework addresses these issues by ensuring literacy includes diverse …

Nurturing A Community Of Literacy Coaches: A Comprehensive Approach To Improved Literacy Instruction, Heather Rottermond, Colleen Whalen, Laura Gabrion, Joseph L. Musial

Michigan Reading Journal

Because equitable literacy practices provide students with access and opportunity, it is essential to build strong and supportive communities for literacy educators. At the center of these communities are literacy coaches who work extensively to cultivate trusting relationships to disrupt the status quo, thereby improving literacy instruction and student success. Literacy coaches build coaching structures and learning cultures that equitably expand educators’ knowledge, skills, and capacity to increase student literacy within and beyond classrooms. This article examines Years One through Three of the Wayne County COSA (Coach on Special Assignment) Initiative. It explores the value of building and sustaining an …

Teaching Social Studies in the Peach State

Ossabaw Island is a Georgia barrier island, accessible solely by boat and protected from development through a public-private partnership between a foundation and the state. This site has the potential to serve as a primary resource for inspiration, education, and lifelong learning. Our study illuminates how one pre-service teacher (PST) and six teacher educators (TEs) experienced an immersive site visit to this local learning environment. We highlight the importance of experiencing places first-hand and using sources (e.g., oral histories) to make content connections. Additionally, the immersive site visit experience allowed us to collaboratively brainstorm place-based curricular units.

A Critical Assessment Tool For Social Studies, Lisa Andries D'Souza

The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies

Faced with endless online social studies lessons, teachers often become overwhelmed sifting through vast resources. Teachers must develop skills to make professional decisions about the value and quality of pre-made curriculum materials. This investigation explores CAT (Critical Assessment Tool) for evaluating pre-made instructional materials to support cultural and linguistic responsiveness and instructional support for all learners. CAT focuses on identifying, modifying, and adding pedagogical materials to be relevant and responsive to the learners in the classroom.
