Rethinking “Key-Chain Swap” And Other Decontextualized Algorithm Teaching Practices For Rational Number Learners, Connor B. Desai

Education Dissertations

Mathematical literacy is critical in an increasingly data-driven society, yet many students struggle with rational number concepts due to the prevalence of decontextualized algorithmic instruction. This study investigates the impact of targeted professional development (PD) on sixth-grade teachers’ instructional strategies and their students’ rational number achievement. The research examines whether explicit, conceptually grounded teaching of rational number operations improves student understanding compared to traditional algorithm-based instruction. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study collected quantitative and qualitative data from students at two middle schools. The intervention was statistically significant at School A, where students in the intervention group demonstrated greater achievement …

Scenes From A Sabbatical: Narratives Of School Leadership, Albert Boerema

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

School leadership is often described in terms of vision, strategy, and efficiency. However, the lived experiences of school leaders reveal a far more complex reality—one shaped by relationships, ethical dilemmas, and the daily challenges of guiding a school community. This paper presents insights from a sabbatical study in which the author observed and interviewed leaders at five schools—one public and four faith-based.Four aspects of leadership are illustrated in this essay: the emotionally charged moments, the tensions that arise between competing visions, the fragility of educational institutions, and the role of hospitality in leadership. These narratives illustrate how school leaders navigate conflict, …

Christ-Centered Reasoning: A Platform And Framework For Integrating Christian Faith Into Higher Education., Jf Jf Jun 2025

Christ-Centered Reasoning: A Platform And Framework For Integrating Christian Faith Into Higher Education., Jf Jf

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

The integration of Christian faith in higher education can be challenging, as the parameters and scope of integration are not always clear. Notably, the term ‘integration’ has been overused and/or thrown around without distinction within the Christian Liberal Arts halls of learning. Generally, no principles are provided for integration in terms of curriculum, pedagogy, or learning; hence, a clear articulation is required regarding what integration entails with respect to curricula, learning, and pedagogy. There is also an urgent need to theorize integration practically and pragmatically within higher education, particularly in relation to inquiry methodologies and discipline-specific specializations. One way to …

Teaching As A Pedagogy For Christian Faith Development: A Faith-Based Framework For Pre-Service Teachers’ Reflective Practice, Sarah Fischer Jun 2025

Teaching As A Pedagogy For Christian Faith Development: A Faith-Based Framework For Pre-Service Teachers’ Reflective Practice, Sarah Fischer

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

To prepare pre-service teachers to be high-quality educators, Christian teacher educators have the responsibility of integrating professional frameworks of teaching effectiveness and reflective practice into their programs. However, the most commonly used frameworks in the United States have inherent limitations when the specific aims of a Christian teacher education program are considered, such as their isolated construction of teacher identity, their prioritization of behavioral changes over attitudinal changes, and their conceptualization of spatial and relational boundaries. Although these tools promote professional growth, they do not adequately support pre-service teachers’ integration of professional and faith development. The goal of this essay …

An Interdisciplinary Early Intervention Learning Community For Undergraduate Students, Ciera M. Lorio, Hannah Rudkin, Christina Rauwolf, Luminita Hartle

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

There is currently a nationwide shortage of early intervention (EI) providers in the United States, and the number of families in need of EI services is much greater than the available service providers (CEC, 2019; Barton et al., 2012). One way to increase the number of qualified service providers is to offer better and earlier preservice training in EI at the university level. To meet this need, we designed and implemented the Early Intervention Learning Community (EILC), an extracurricular experience that focused on introducing students to EI and interprofessional practice. The primary components of the EILC included self-guided learning modules, …
