Failing Better: Scaffolding Learning With The Metaliteracy Badging System, Kelsey L. O'Brien

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

The Metaliteracy Badging System, collaboratively produced by educators from across the State University of New York (SUNY), has undergone several trials and transformations. Over the course of this iterative journey, this resource has served in often-unexpected ways as a flexible educational tool that facilitates meaningful curriculum design and collaborative teaching. This chapter provides an overview of the design and implementation of the system, along with our challenges and goals moving forward. Just as we teach our students to fail better, we too have drawn on our setbacks as opportunities for growth and improvement.

This Will Change Everything: Teaching The Climate Crisis, John Foran, Summer Gray, Corrie Grosse, Theo Lequesne

Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

We argue that U.S. sociologists have been woefully remiss in incorporating the climate crisis into our research agendas and even more, into our teaching. After laying out the gravity of the situation we issue a call for sociologists to consider whether they wish to continue this striking denial of responsibility to our students and to knowledge production. We then present four ways that we have infused our understanding of climate change, climate crisis, and climate justice into courses on global issues, social movements, inequality, and much more. We believe that “climate justice” – the key concept that drives our concern …

Users Not Watchers: Motivation And The Use Of Discussion Boards In Online Learning, Sarah Ransdell, Jia Borror, Angie Su

FDLA Journal

College students will participate in any learning activity when they feel it helps. Students have an uncanny sense of a tipping point of use. Is it worth my time? Will it help me get a better grade? Discussion boards only work if they help and not hinder online learning. Discussing course content online can be as useful as discussing it among physical classmates. In fact, actively using discussion boards can encourage students to be active users not passive watchers. Users are motivated to engage. Watchers disengage. The present paper provides six examples of how DB motivated online learning. These …

Research implications for agricultural education included an examination of classroom …

A Review Of A Developmental Physical Activity Mindfulness Model To Increase Physical Activity In College Students, Tj Exford, Jessica Platt Jan 2018

A Review Of A Developmental Physical Activity Mindfulness Model To Increase Physical Activity In College Students, Tj Exford, Jessica Platt

LWLC Faculty Research

Studies have shown that, as young adults enter college, their level of physical activity is greatly diminished (Kwan, Cairney, Faulkner, & Pullenavegum, 2012). In fact, it has been estimated that one-third of students who are active in high school become inactive upon adapting to university life (Bray and Born, 2004). In Healthy Campus 2010: Making It Happen, the American College Health Association outlined physical activity (PA) goals and body mass index (BMI) goals for university students, and studies have shown that РА and BMI have actually deteriorated in many students after entering college (Deng, Castelli, Castro-Pinero, & Guan, 2011). Physical …

Increasing Social Presence Online: Five Strategies For Instructors, Charlotte A. Jones-Roberts

FDLA Journal

As one component of the Community of Inquiry Model, social presence comprises how learners effectively project themselves in a learning environment. Effective cultivation of social presence can lead to more motivated students, success in the class, and, of course, effective online instruction. However, increasing social presence in an online course can be easier said than done. Through a review of literature, this paper briefly overviews the benefits of increased social presence and highlights five research-based strategies for improving social presence in online environments.

University Partnership: A Grant-Funded Program For Minority And Underserved Populations, Jerry Holt Jan 2018

University Partnership: A Grant-Funded Program For Minority And Underserved Populations, Jerry Holt

FDLA Journal

Provision of services for minority and underserved populations is often problematic. Often, these students attend schools in districts in which funding is lacking for the delivery of services (Ballantine, 2017; Brint, 2017). Classic texts such as Kozol’s Savage Inequalities (1991) highlighted the disparate nature of the schools that serve these populations, and concomitantly the diminished opportunity for these students in terms of academic progress and workforce possibilities. This disparity of opportunity, often characterized by ethnicity and socioeconomics, persists into the 21st century (Rothstein, 2014; Weir, 2016).[1]

[1] Kozol also continues to describe the ongoing disparity in American education …

Reflections On The N+K Dragon Kings Problem, Richard D. Chatham

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

A dragon king is a shogi piece that moves any number of squares vertically or horizontally or one square diagonally but does not move through or jump over other pieces. We construct infinite families of solutions to the n + k dragon kings problem of placing k pawns and n + k mutually nonattacking dragon kings on an n+n board, including solutions symmetric with respect to quarter-turn or half-turn rotations, solutions symmetric with respect to one or two diagonal reflections, and solutions not symmetric with respect to any nontrivial rotation or reflection. We show that an n + k dragon …

Increasing Physical Activity Using An Ecological Model, Gina B. Gonzalez, Kristi M. King Jan 2018

Increasing Physical Activity Using An Ecological Model, Gina B. Gonzalez, Kristi M. King

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

Increasing the proportion of adults in the United States (U.S.) who engage in physical activity is a national priority. Only 29% met the aerobic guideline, 3% met the muscle strengthening guideline only, and 21% met the guidelines for both aerobic and muscle-strengthening activity. Individually oriented physical activity interventions can be intensive and have large effects; however, changes may be temporary unless supportive environments and health-promoting policies are in place. A variety of strategies are required to get and keep people physically active.
