Parent Involvement In Contested Times: A Brief Analysis Of The Effects Of Anti-Immigrant Policies On Latinx Immigrant Parent Involvement, Maria Isabel Morales

CGU Theses & Dissertations

How do perceived community and school cultural values affect Latinx immigrant parents’ decisions to engage with their children’s schools? What lessons might their experiences have for our understanding of parent involvement beyond the parameters of traditional models of parent involvement? Engaging parents as advocates for school success in the home is particularly important for English Language Learners (ELs). Tapping into the experiences of EL parents is a resource educators can use to increase parental involvement and, consequently, student academic achievement.

This qualitative case study grounded in Critical Inquiry and Cultural Historic Activity Theory examined the perceptions and experiences of 5 …

Unity As The Primary Principle In A New Approach To Professional Development: Aligning Programming Through Milestone Events To Create Faculty Learning, Russell Carpenter, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe, Carolyn Grace Jan 2019

Unity As The Primary Principle In A New Approach To Professional Development: Aligning Programming Through Milestone Events To Create Faculty Learning, Russell Carpenter, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe, Carolyn Grace

Journal of Excellence in College Teaching and Learning

Authors offer a model for unifying professional development of faculty through aligning programming based on core-learning threads. This approach allows participants to embed new knowledge into a “larger context,” which Brown, Roediger, and McDaniel (2014) argued “helps learning” (p. 6). Our Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) unifies all events—Teaching & Learning Innovation (TLI) series sessions, Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), and faculty institutes—around these core-learning threads. This unified programming is supported by online experiences offered within the Developing Excellence in Eastern’s Professors (DEEP) system (Carpenter, 2017). Through this approach, authors use milestone events as opportunities to reinforce core-learning threads and …

Symmetry Is Not A Universal Law Of Beauty, Helmut Leder, Pablo Tinio, David Brieber, Tonio Kröner, Thomas Jacobsen, Raphael Rosenberg Jan 2019

Symmetry Is Not A Universal Law Of Beauty, Helmut Leder, Pablo Tinio, David Brieber, Tonio Kröner, Thomas Jacobsen, Raphael Rosenberg

Department of Educational Foundations Scholarship and Creative Works

Scientific disciplines as diverse as biology, physics, and psychological aesthetics regard symmetry as one of the most important principles in nature and one of the most powerful determinants of beauty. However, symmetry has a low standing in the arts and humanities. This difference in the valuation of symmetry is a remarkable illustration of the gap between the two cultures. To close this gap, we conducted an interdisciplinary, empirical study to directly demonstrate the effects of art expertise on symmetry appreciation. Two groups of art experts—artists and art historians—and a group of non-experts provided spontaneous beauty ratings of visual stimuli that …

African American Christian Senior Pastor's Beliefs About Mental Health Treatment, Trinaa L. Copeland

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

In the African American community, the Black Church and its clergy have served as gatekeepers to formal mental health treatment. Little is known about the beliefs of African American Christian senior pastors about mental health treatment and their personal views influencing their counsel to congregants seeking support through the church. This transcendental phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of African American Christian senior pastors in relation to how they understand mental health treatment and provide it to their congregants. The research questions explored three areas: (a) the senior pastors' experiences in rendering mental health treatment, (b) the senior pastors' personal …

Middle School Teachers' Perceptions Of Instructional Coaching, Dean Rochelle Bryant Jan 2019

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Delineating A Regional Education Research Agenda, Edmund T. Hamann Jan 2019

Delineating A Regional Education Research Agenda, Edmund T. Hamann

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

If one wants to advance the argument that the Great Plains, as a region, matters— and the very existence of Great Plains Research and the Center for Great Plains Studies that publishes it suggest significant support for the idea— then one can ask, How did we learn that they matter? How do they matter? Can we live on them ethically, with a regard for each other and sense of stewardship and responsibility? Education research in, of, for, and with a region allows us to pursue each of these questions, plus more. Here we do so, informed by the two central …

A Framework For Improving The Teaching Of Mathematics To Bi/Multilingual Learners, Kara Mitchell Viesca, Nicole M. Joseph, Nancy L. Commins

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

To teach mathematics well to bi/multilingual learners, we propose that mathematics teachers should consider the following five elements: know the content, know the language, know the learner, engage the community and assess meaningfully. This chapter defines each of these elements, explores how they are put into practice, and shares the responses of teachers who have participated in online professional development organized around each element. By approaching mathematics teaching with these elements in mind, teachers can more effectively support high levels of learning and achievement for bi/multilingual learners across levels of English proficiency and grade levels.
