To Wonder, Wander, And Linger In The World Of Standardized Testing, Randall Wright, Alayne Sullivan
Journal of Critical Issues in Educational Practice
The standards movement began as a nobly-intended effort to establish a core curriculum—a template of knowledge and skills that would guide teaching and learning across the K-12 curriculum. Our attempts to standardize curriculum may have unintended and deleterious side-effect: The atrophying of the mind’s natural tendencies for exploratory play and inherently imaginative dimensions. This paper engages us in a critical remembering of our pedagogical relationships with children. It reminds us of children’s ways of being and asks how we might engage them in a rigorous appreciation of curricular literacies without thwarting their wonderful wanderings. Developing Extended Communities Of Practice To Support Implementation Of Inspiration® In Elementary Classrooms, Michael Richard Towne

This project examined the need for continuing education for teachers, particularly in the area of technology integration. It includes an exploration of the interdependence of technology and pedagogy. It developed an on-line extended community of practice to support professional educators attempting to implement Inspiration®, a commercial software application. The project presents a research-based justification for employing cognitive mapping strategies in a wide variety of pedagogical contexts, provides a dynamic list of examples demonstrating concrete applications which are connected to content and technology standards, and examines current design features for websites.

This project explores the Whole Language method for developing Taiwanese students' language proficiency in both Chinese and English. It includes sections on current practice in primary-level instruction, teaching methods, learner-centered literacy, crosscultural teaching and learning, and school administration. It provides a theoretical framework for training Whole Language teachers, an instructional unit and a strategy for assessment.
