The purpose of this thesis is to collect and investigate material in order to determine the evolution of the didactic books of manners written by two authors of the middle of the 16th century, namely: "The Scholemaster" written by Roger Ascham, and "Euphues" written by John Lyly, to analyze their functions as didactic works in the literary field, to determine their influence upon literary successors, also to reveal their influence upon the people of the time, their idea of a gentleman. "Extra-Curricular Activities" is becoming a familiar phrase. It refers to "those legitimate activities which ·are not provided for in that part of the school program which is usually designated as the curriculum." (1) The phrase is apparently new, yet the activities it refers to · are, in elementary form, as old as our educational system itself. · The Friday afternoon exercises, the spell-downs, and athletics under various forms, are of long standing in American schools.
