Conceptual Framework Alignment Between Primary Literature And Education In Animal Behaviour, Andrea Marie-Kryger Bierema Jun 2014

Conceptual Framework Alignment Between Primary Literature And Education In Animal Behaviour, Andrea Marie-Kryger Bierema

Dissertations

In 1963, Tinbergen revolutionized the study of animal behaviour in his paper On aims and methods of ethology (Zeitschrift Tierpsycholgie, 20, 410-433) by revamping the conceptual framework of the discipline. His framework suggests an integration of four questions: causation, ontogeny, survival value, and evolution. The National Research Council Committee (U.S.) on Undergraduate Biology Education to Prepare Research Scientists for the 21st Century published BIO2010: Transforming Undergraduate Education for Future Research Biologists (Washington, DC: The National Academies Press, 2003), which suggests alignment between current research and undergraduate education. Unfortunately, alignment has been rarely studied in college biology, especially for fundamental …

Using Case Method To Explicitly Teach Formative Assessment In Preservice Teacher Science Education, Amy Elizabeth Bentz Jun 2014

Using Case Method To Explicitly Teach Formative Assessment In Preservice Teacher Science Education, Amy Elizabeth Bentz

Dissertations

The process of formative assessment improves student understanding; however, the topic of formative assessment in preservice education has been severely neglected. Since a major goal of teacher education is to create reflective teaching professionals, preservice teachers should be provided an opportunity to critically reflect on the use of formative assessment in the classroom. Case method is an instructional methodology that allows learners to engage in and reflect on real-world situations. Case based pedagogy can play an important role in enhancing preservice teachers’ ability to reflect on teaching and learning by encouraging alternative ways of thinking about assessment.

Although the literature …

The Real-Time Instructor Observing Tool For Future Teachers, Cassandra Paul May 2014

The Real-Time Instructor Observing Tool For Future Teachers, Cassandra Paul

Faculty Publications

Current educational research shows that students achieve higher learning gains in science classrooms when interactive techniques are used. As a result, we are seeing more high schools and institutions of higher education adopt interactive courses. Unfortunately, it's difficult for future teachers to envision interactive science courses because their experience as students has been dominated by traditional lecture. New educators need to know what interactive science classrooms look like, so that they can model this experience in their own classrooms. The Real-time Instructor Observing Tool (RIOT), a computer application that allows an observer to quickly categorize classroom interactions, can help with …

Elementary School Teachers' Interpretation And Promotion Of Creativity In The Learning Of Mathematics: A Grounded Theory Study, Yinjing Shen

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Creativity is important for young children learning mathematics. Comparing the investment theory of creativity and national standards and principles for early mathematics shows that doing mathematics is more than applying rules and procedures; rather, learning mathematics takes a lot of creativity. However, much literature claimed that creativity for young children in the learning of mathematics was not adequately supported by teachers in the classroom due to teachers’ poor college preparation in mathematics content knowledge, teachers’ negativity towards creative students, teachers’ occupational pressure, low quality curriculum, and the like. The purpose of this grounded theory study was to generate a model …

The Importance Of Writing In Mathematics: Why Writing Allows For A Deeper Understanding Of The Mathematical Content, Cory Quealy

The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research

When learning a new subject or course material, writing can be an essential tool for a deeper understanding of content. The importance of writing in mathematics is no different—yet in mathematics, writing seems to be the odd-ball out (exception). However, in classrooms where students have little depth of understanding mathematics, writing can be a vital instrument in the learning process. A common misconception when learning mathematics is that it is all numbers and memorizing equations—when in fact writing is a main component and first step to developing a deeper understanding of the mathematical content. As students continue to grow and …

High Cognitive Test Item Development And Implementation, Ashley Salisbury

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

In secondary math classrooms there has been a movement toward discovery and problem solving based instruction. This type of instruction requires teachers to teach on what is often considered a higher level of cognition and allows students to discover more ideas and concepts on their own as opposed to traditional lecture style. Teachers with well thought-out examples, questions, and activities provide students with tools to solve problems on their own requiring students to make mathematical discoveries and connections. These skills not only benefit students in their math class but are analytical skills students can use throughout their lives.

Merging Educational Technology Into Routine Care For Patients Living With Fibromyalgia, Toni Sparks May 2014

Merging Educational Technology Into Routine Care For Patients Living With Fibromyalgia, Toni Sparks

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Fibromyalgia is a complex and challenging disorder of unknown etiology; however the management of patients with fibromyalgia is becoming facilitated more often by Advance Practice Registered Nurses (APRN). Unfortunately, the lack of clarity in diagnosis, variances in practice guidelines, time constraints and the resources required for APRNs to adequately manage fibromyalgia can be extensive. The evidence supporting nonpharmacological strategies is strong; yet implementation of these strategies into routine care has not been sufficient.

Substantial research in the past five years has resulted in new diagnostic criteria intended to simplify the fibromyalgia diagnosis. Moreover, new clinical practice guidelines stress the importance …

Making Their Own Way: The Experiences Of Gay Male Students In Stem Fields, Adam R. Smith May 2014

Making Their Own Way: The Experiences Of Gay Male Students In Stem Fields, Adam R. Smith

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This thesis focuses on the experiences of gay male undergraduate students in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. These fields are often thought to be very masculine or hyper-genderized, which could conflict with the dominant culture’s perception of a gay student’s identity. It follows, then, that a hypergenderized environment could have negative effects on those who do not identify strongly with the hegemonic masculine identity that may be present in the classroom.

Using phenomenological principles, students were asked to participate in a series of three interviews, which included two reflective exercises designed to explore their experiences in and …

Effects Of Peer Labeling On Middle School Student Engagement In Stem Subjects, Stacey Kristine Stanton

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Much attention has been given to the shortage of STEM professionals entering the workforce in the United States. Reasons for the disinterest in pursuing STEM degrees are many. Some argue students are disinterested with STEM content during early adolescence as a result of negative peer labeling, such as “brain” or “nerd,” towards individuals who demonstrate aptitude in STEM content. The purpose of my study was to investigate whether peer labeling in middle school is directed towards students who show an aptitude for STEM content, and further, to determine whether peer labeling impacts motivation and engagement in STEM content. There are …
