Computer Assisted Drill And Practice: An Instructional Aid To Increasing Rate Of Acquisition Of Addition Math Facts, Paula G. Frandsen
Masters Theses
This study supplemented existing math instruction and drill and practice (flash cards and worksheets) with computer assisted drill and practice (CADP) to facilitate addition math fact attainment of first grade students. The six students selected were introduced to (CADP) on an individual basis using a multiple baseline across subjects research design. Timed tests were used to select subjects, as baseline measures, and as probes throughout the study to measure the students' rate correct per minute (the dependent variable).
All subjects showed an increase in their individual rate correct per minute after the introduction of CADP. This rate increase is important …

Museum Studies In Collection Management, Hugh H. Genoways
University of Nebraska State Museum: Programs Information
First paragraph:
At the workshop on "Collection Resources for the 1990's" held in Washington, D.C., October 1988, one of the identified needs for institutions was for additional trained collection management staff (Hoagland and Mabee, ASC Newsletter 16(6): 9, 1988). There are few academic programs that provide training in the management of biological, geological, and anthropological collections. Because this is an identified need for the 1990's, the question arises: "Are we able to meet this need?" and, if we are not currently in a position to do so, "What must be done in the future to meet this need?"

Comparisons Of Learnings From Structured And Nonstructured Visits To A Science Exhibit, Rosario Canizales De Andrade
Comparisons Of Learnings From Structured And Nonstructured Visits To A Science Exhibit, Rosario Canizales De Andrade
Dissertations
The primary purpose of this study was to determine whether the use of an activity worksheet during a museum visit to a science exhibit might help students achieve the objectives proposed for the visit. Two types of museum visits were identified: structured and nonstructured. During the structured visit students used the activity worksheet that focused their attention on concepts, displays, and activities presented in the exhibit. During the nonstructured visit, students did not use any attention-focusing device; instead, they interacted with the exhibit according to their own interests and preferences.
Secondary goals of the study were to determine if gender-related …

Nebraska Tractor Tests
EXPLANATION OF THE TEST PROCEDURE General Tractors are tested at the University of Nebraska according to the Agricultural Tractor Test Code approved by the American Society of Agricultural Engineers and the Society of Automotive Engineers or official Nebraska test procedure. The manufacturer selects the tractor to be tested and certifies that it is a stock model. Each tractor is equipped with the common power consuming accessories such as power steering, power lift pump, generator, etc., if available. Power consuming accessories may be disconnected only when the means for disconnecting can be reached from the operating station. An official representative of …

Beauty In Mathematics: Some Theological Implications, David L. Neuhouser
Beauty In Mathematics: Some Theological Implications, David L. Neuhouser
ACMS Conference Proceedings 1989
It may come as a surprise to some that science or mathematics could be considered beautiful, but many prominent sciences and mathematicians from around the world have made such claims. Furthermore, the beauty of mathematics and order of the universe inspired some of the greatest developments in science and mathematics. This paper examines the beauty of mathematics and what scientists and other individuals have said about the subject.
A Course On Mathematics And The Christian Faith, W. David Laverell, Carl J. Sinke
A Course On Mathematics And The Christian Faith, W. David Laverell, Carl J. Sinke
ACMS Conference Proceedings 1989
The January interim term at Calvin College provides an opportunity for developing and teaching courses outside a normal major program. As a result faculty members are frequently given the interim off to provide time for research and development of new courses. In 1987 we were given such a leave in order to pursue the questions of the relationship between mathematics and the Christian Faith. One result was our presentation at the 1987 Association of Christians in the Mathematical Sciences conference. Immediately thereafter we began to develop a specific interim course based on our studies. We offered the course during the …

The Bisexual Galton-Watson Branching Process, David M. Hull
The Bisexual Galton-Watson Branching Process, David M. Hull
ACMS Conference Proceedings 1989
I would like to present the bisexual Galton-Watson branching process. The word "bisexual" indicates that we will be considering a population of two sexes--which will be designated as the usual male and female. Here is a brief overview of what I would like to cover.
- The bisexual process motivated: why is it needed?
- The standard Galton-Watson branching process.
- The state of affairs regarding two-sex models.
- The nuts and bolts of the bisexual Galton-Watson branching process (parameters defined and how it works).
- A review of published bisexual results to date.
- What is to come?

Simulated Annealing On Np-Complete Problems, Russell W. Howell
Simulated Annealing On Np-Complete Problems, Russell W. Howell
ACMS Conference Proceedings 1989
The Random House Dictionary defines anneal as " ... to free (glass, metals, etc.) from internal stress by heating and gradually cooling." In the physical world, impurities are annealed out of a substance by heating it to a high temperature. As it is cooled, its molecular structure gradually settles into a stable "low-energy" configuration. It is important to cool the substance slowly, especially at lower temperatures, so that impurities do not get "frozen" into place. With careful cooling, a low-energy state can eventually be reached. This state may not be the one with the lowest potential energy, where the spins …
