Easy, Bright, Fluorescence Demonstration Of Buffer Action, Mariana Dykstra, Yejin Chung, Mark Muyskens
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
We report an attractive update to the demonstration of acid–base buffer action that is appropriate for ease of use and getting attention in the classroom. The twist is based on new fluorophore information and the recent availability of UV flashlights serving as an ideal, portable excitation light source. The pH-dependent fluorescence comes from a choice among three natural sources, namely narra tree wood extract, kidneywood extract, and scopoletin, which is a purchasable coumarin, that all perform equally well. We provide practical details for performing the buffer demonstration at scales of 100 and 1000 mL and give background information for context.

Students' Difficulties: Mathematical Creative Thinking Skill Questions Based On Habits Of Mind., Rira Jun Fineldi, Kana Hidayati
Jurnal Riset Pendidikan Matematika
This study aims to describe: 1) the types of difficulties experienced by students in solving math problems based on mathematical creative thinking ability and students' habits of mind in solving math problems based on mathematical creative thinking ability. This research includes survey research with quantitative and qualitative approaches. The research subjects were 519 students of state junior high schools and state Islamic junior high schools in Kampar Regency who came from ten schools with high, medium, and low categories of accreditation. The sample in this study was determined by the stratified proportional random sampling technique. The instrument used was a …

The ability to understand mathematical concepts of students who are still relatively low requires a handling in the form of learning in accordance with student characteristics and learning material. This can be done by presenting learning media facilitated by teachers as scientific products resulting from the design and development of multimedia programs for Articulate Storyline interaction. This study aims to: (1) describe the process and produce valid and practical Articulate Storyline learning media products; (2) examine the practicality of learning implementation using Articulate Storyline learning media products (3) examine students' ability to understand mathematical concepts in derivative material that follows …

The Fear Of Reptiles And How To Change It, Maxwell Lyman
The Fear Of Reptiles And How To Change It, Maxwell Lyman
Honors Projects
Reptile fear is prominent across many cultures. Anti-reptilian attitudes can lead to anti-conservation attitudes towards reptiles. Person-animal interaction has been shown to decrease fear desensitization and increase positive attitudes towards "unpopular" animals. My project demonstrates the effectiveness of live animal presentation in dispelling negative attitudes of reptiles. However, due to the sample size of the project, further research is highly suggested.
Supporting Diverse Learners In Stem, Joshua Pearson
Supporting Diverse Learners In Stem, Joshua Pearson
Science and Engineering Saturday Seminars
After first issuing 1:1 iPads, Chromebooks and laptops, many k-12 schools are now implementing BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) programs that provide more choice for educators and learners. Some are “Going Google” with Chromebooks and G Suite, while others are using iPads and tablets. How do you support diverse learners on all devices, using free and low cost Apps and Assistive Technology (AT) solutions? These AT (Assistive Technology) solutions (many of which are free or low cost) personalize the educational experience, as well as engage and include ALL learners in a Universally Designed environment across the curriculum. AT has the …

Girls Only Science: Motivating Adolescent Females To Pursue Stem Careers, Madeline Cuckow
Girls Only Science: Motivating Adolescent Females To Pursue Stem Careers, Madeline Cuckow
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Over the last five years, much attention has been drawn to the large deficit of females in STEM careers and fields. Most attribute this failure to colleges not turning out enough female STEM majors. Contrary to this belief, research suggests a young woman's aptitude for STEM related fields begins much earlier, and declines without intervention.
This project details the research of why there is a gender gap in STEM, what is being done educationally, my unique case study to test the research conducted, and the implications of that research.

Geospatial tools have become a critical component to most wildlife studies and management questions. With a diversity of approaches available, current and future wildlife professionals deserve guidance on the most important tools to answer these questions. Younger professionals may be expected to know a separate set of skills from those required further on in their career. We conducted an online survey and a year-long search of job advertisements to identify the most important geospatial approaches, techniques, programs, and ancillary skills for wildlife professionals. We provide the results of these 2 efforts so that wildlife professionals interested in geospatial tools can …

Creating Art Patterns With Math And Code, Boyan Kostadinov
Publications and Research
The goal of this talk is to showcase some visualization projects that we developed for a 3-day Code in R summer program, designed to inspire the creative side of our STEM students by engaging them with computational projects that we developed with the purpose of mixing calculus level math and code to create complex geometric patterns. One of the goals of this program was to attract more minority and female students into applied math and computer science majors.
The projects are designed to be implemented using the high-level, open-source and free computational environment R, a popular software in industry for …

EXPLANATION OF TEST REPORT: John Deere B
TEST A: The manufacturer's representative operates the tractor for a minimum of 12 hours using light to heavy drawbar loads in each gear.
This serves as a period for limber up, general observation and adjustments. Adjustments that are permissible include valve tappet clearance, breaker ,point gap, spark plug gaps, clutch and others of a similar nature. No new parts or accessories can be installed without having mention made of it in the report. No data' are recorded during this preliminary run except the time that the engine is operated.
