Easy, Bright, Fluorescence Demonstration Of Buffer Action, Mariana Dykstra, Yejin Chung, Mark Muyskens Jan 2024

Easy, Bright, Fluorescence Demonstration Of Buffer Action, Mariana Dykstra, Yejin Chung, Mark Muyskens

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

We report an attractive update to the demonstration of acid–base buffer action that is appropriate for ease of use and getting attention in the classroom. The twist is based on new fluorophore information and the recent availability of UV flashlights serving as an ideal, portable excitation light source. The pH-dependent fluorescence comes from a choice among three natural sources, namely narra tree wood extract, kidneywood extract, and scopoletin, which is a purchasable coumarin, that all perform equally well. We provide practical details for performing the buffer demonstration at scales of 100 and 1000 mL and give background information for context.

Pengembangan Media Pembelajaran Articulate Storyline Untuk Pemahaman Konsep Materi Turunan Siswa Di Sma, La Ode Ahmad Jazuli, Arvyaty Arvyaty, Hasnawaty Hasnawaty, Muhamad Fadel Ibrahim

Jurnal Riset Pendidikan Matematika

The ability to understand mathematical concepts of students who are still relatively low requires a handling in the form of learning in accordance with student characteristics and learning material. This can be done by presenting learning media facilitated by teachers as scientific products resulting from the design and development of multimedia programs for Articulate Storyline interaction. This study aims to: (1) describe the process and produce valid and practical Articulate Storyline learning media products; (2) examine the practicality of learning implementation using Articulate Storyline learning media products (3) examine students' ability to understand mathematical concepts in derivative material that follows …

The Fear Of Reptiles And How To Change It, Maxwell Lyman Dec 2020

The Fear Of Reptiles And How To Change It, Maxwell Lyman

Honors Projects

Reptile fear is prominent across many cultures. Anti-reptilian attitudes can lead to anti-conservation attitudes towards reptiles. Person-animal interaction has been shown to decrease fear desensitization and increase positive attitudes towards "unpopular" animals. My project demonstrates the effectiveness of live animal presentation in dispelling negative attitudes of reptiles. However, due to the sample size of the project, further research is highly suggested.

Supporting Diverse Learners In Stem, Joshua Pearson Jan 2019

Supporting Diverse Learners In Stem, Joshua Pearson

Science and Engineering Saturday Seminars

After first issuing 1:1 iPads, Chromebooks and laptops, many k-12 schools are now implementing BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) programs that provide more choice for educators and learners. Some are “Going Google” with Chromebooks and G Suite, while others are using iPads and tablets. How do you support diverse learners on all devices, using free and low cost Apps and Assistive Technology (AT) solutions? These AT (Assistive Technology) solutions (many of which are free or low cost) personalize the educational experience, as well as engage and include ALL learners in a Universally Designed environment across the curriculum. AT has the …

Girls Only Science: Motivating Adolescent Females To Pursue Stem Careers, Madeline Cuckow Jan 2018

Girls Only Science: Motivating Adolescent Females To Pursue Stem Careers, Madeline Cuckow

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Over the last five years, much attention has been drawn to the large deficit of females in STEM careers and fields. Most attribute this failure to colleges not turning out enough female STEM majors. Contrary to this belief, research suggests a young woman's aptitude for STEM related fields begins much earlier, and declines without intervention.

This project details the research of why there is a gender gap in STEM, what is being done educationally, my unique case study to test the research conducted, and the implications of that research.

Informing Students About Academic Integrity In Programming., Simple Simon, Judy Sheard, Michael Morgan, Andrew Petersen, Amber Settle, Jane Sinclair Dec 2017

Informing Students About Academic Integrity In Programming., Simple Simon, Judy Sheard, Michael Morgan, Andrew Petersen, Amber Settle, Jane Sinclair

Amber Settle

In recent years academic integrity has come to be seen as a major concern across the full educational spectrum. The case has been made that in certain ways academic integrity is not the same in computing education as in education more generally, and that as a consequence it is the responsibility of computing educators to explicitly advise their students of the academic integrity requirements of their assessments. As part of a larger project, computing academics around the world were asked a number of questions regarding how they advise their students about academic integrity in programming assessments. Almost all respondents indicated …

Teaching The Strand Of Ccss Slope Through Metacognition In Middle School, High School, And Advanced Placement Mathematics, Sara Snarr Sep 2017

Teaching The Strand Of Ccss Slope Through Metacognition In Middle School, High School, And Advanced Placement Mathematics, Sara Snarr

Sara Snarr

The strand of slope presents every year from 7th grade through Advanced Placement Calculus. The Common Core Learning Standards require and encourage a thorough understanding of slope and slope-related concepts such as unit rate, parallel and perpendicular lines, and the derivative. Unfortunately, many secondary mathematics teachers struggle to teach students to monitor their process and conceptualize an overall strategy for solving complex and fundamental problems. This thesis examines the role of metacognition-focused instruction on achievement, and offers research-supported teaching methods in the context of slope and unit rate that support metacognition. These methods are then presented in a series of …

Secondary School Mathematics And Science Matters: Academic Performance For Secondary Students Transitioning Into University Allied Health Science Courses, Gregory S. C. Hine May 2017

Secondary School Mathematics And Science Matters: Academic Performance For Secondary Students Transitioning Into University Allied Health Science Courses, Gregory S. C. Hine

Gregory S.C. Hine

The literature strongly indicates that secondary school performance is highly predictive of university performance. Moreover, scholars have identified that successful performance in university mathematics and science courses depends on the level of mathematics studied in secondary school. This paper investigated the extent to which particular mathematics and science courses (e.g. Stage 2; intermediate and Stage 3; advanced) completed at secondary school affected the Grade Point Average (GPA) of 521 first-year Health Science, Physiotherapy and Nursing students within an Australian university. Based upon a statistical analysis of student performance (secondary Australian Tertiary Admissions Ranking (ATAR) score & first-year university GPA), the …

What Should Go In A Wildlife Professional’S Geospatial Toolbox? (Response Data), William Bean, Ryan C. Baumbusch, Brooke Berger, Matthew Delheimer, Lee J. Hecker, Matthew Lau, Megan C. Milligan

Research Data Sets

Geospatial tools have become a critical component to most wildlife studies and management questions. With a diversity of approaches available, current and future wildlife professionals deserve guidance on the most important tools to answer these questions. Younger professionals may be expected to know a separate set of skills from those required further on in their career. We conducted an online survey and a year-long search of job advertisements to identify the most important geospatial approaches, techniques, programs, and ancillary skills for wildlife professionals. We provide the results of these 2 efforts so that wildlife professionals interested in geospatial tools can …

Creating Art Patterns With Math And Code, Boyan Kostadinov

Publications and Research

The goal of this talk is to showcase some visualization projects that we developed for a 3-day Code in R summer program, designed to inspire the creative side of our STEM students by engaging them with computational projects that we developed with the purpose of mixing calculus level math and code to create complex geometric patterns. One of the goals of this program was to attract more minority and female students into applied math and computer science majors.

The projects are designed to be implemented using the high-level, open-source and free computational environment R, a popular software in industry for …
