A Single, Narrowly Focused Create Primary Literature Module Evokes Gains In Genetics Students’ Self-Efficacy And Understanding Of The Research Process, Alison Krufka, Kristy Kenyon, Sally G. Hoskins

Publications and Research

Exposure to primary literature using CREATE tools has been shown to have a positive impact on students’ self-efficacy and beliefs when incorporated into semester-long courses taught by extensively trained faculty. However, it is unknown whether similar benefits can occur with a brief exposure to CREATE in an otherwise traditionally taught course. We hypothesized that students who experienced a short-term CREATE module taught by faculty with minimal training in this pedagogy would make gains in scientific literacy and self-efficacy while also experiencing epistemological maturation. To test this hypothesis, we compared sections of students who experienced the CREATE module with sections of …

These conclusions show that teacher-made review questions are quantitatively and qualitatively the most beneficial for students when preparing for tests.

Teaching In A Total Institution: Toward A Pedagogy Of Care In Prison Classrooms, Lauren J. Wolf Apr 2020

Teaching In A Total Institution: Toward A Pedagogy Of Care In Prison Classrooms, Lauren J. Wolf

Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)

This paper argues that a pedagogy of care can help reduce some of the human damage caused by incarceration. Rather than casting incarcerated men and women outside of the moral community and turning prisoners into a “them,” a pedagogy of care promotes inclusion and the creation of human connections. Recognizing prisoners’ humanity helps to dissolve some of the effects of institutionalization and may foster rehabilitation. Instead of limiting teachers to providers of information, as a traditional classroom expects, a pedagogy of care elevates teachers to human constituents of a learning community. This paper outlines a pedagogy of care in the …

Learning Opportunities Of Multiplication Fluency In Open Source K-5 Mathematics Curriculum, Katie L. Johnson Apr 2020

Learning Opportunities Of Multiplication Fluency In Open Source K-5 Mathematics Curriculum, Katie L. Johnson

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Theses and Other Student Research

Three open source K-5 mathematics curricula, Bridges in Mathematics, Eureka Mathematics, and Texas Go Math!, were analyzed and coded to determine what learning opportunities they provided for students to develop multiplication fluency. Multiplication fluency is achieved when conceptual and procedural knowledge are layered to allow the learner to process the information. Across the three sets of materials, 429 items were coded, with 69.93% being coded as items that afforded the development of procedural knowledge. One of the goals of this study was to determine how curricular materials support rote learning versus more layered [scaffolded] learning. It was determined …

The Effects Of Small-Group Collaboration On Student Attitudes Towards Mathematics, Philip Golden Apr 2020

The Effects Of Small-Group Collaboration On Student Attitudes Towards Mathematics, Philip Golden

Undergraduate Theses

Collaborative group work has become a prevalent teaching strategy in high school mathematics classrooms, and for good reason. When implemented effectively, studies show that collaboration improves student learning outcomes. However, there are other factors to consider when deciding on best practices for teaching, one being student attitudes towards the content. In particular student attitudes towards mathematics (which are not generally positive) are important to consider. In this study, students in a high school mathematics classroom took a survey before and after a unit that implemented collaborative strategies. Results of the study indicate that student attitudes towards math improved after working …

The Effect Of Mozart’S Music On Test Anxiety, Emma Blevins Apr 2020

The Effect Of Mozart’S Music On Test Anxiety, Emma Blevins

Honors Projects

Test anxiety is a multitude of negative responses to evaluation, which can have an adverse effect on student performance on examinations and student health. Research has found that listening to slow or classical music can help reduce student test anxiety by improving spatial-temporal reasoning, improving student focus, and reducing the physiological effects of anxiety. In my classroom, listening to Mozart’s music was shown to have a positive effect on students’ emotional well-being. However, the students in my classroom did not have a significant change in performance on mathematics exams when listening to Mozart’s music.

Framework For The Natures Of Negativity In Introductory Physics, Suzanne White Brahmia, Alexis Olsho, Trevor Smith, Andrew Boudreaux Apr 2020

Framework For The Natures Of Negativity In Introductory Physics, Suzanne White Brahmia, Alexis Olsho, Trevor Smith, Andrew Boudreaux

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

Mathematical reasoning skills are a desired outcome of many introductory physics courses, particularly calculus-based physics courses. Novices can struggle to understand the many roles signed numbers play in physics contexts, and recent evidence shows that unresolved struggle can carry over to subsequent physics courses. Positive and negative quantities are ubiquitous in physics, and the sign carries important and varied meanings. The mathematics education research literature documents the cognitive challenge of conceptualizing negative numbers as mathematical objects—both for experts, historically, and for novices as they learn. We contribute to the small but growing body of research in physics contexts that examines …

Accelerating Reinforcement Learning With Prioritized Experience Replay For Maze Game, Chaoshun Hu, Mehesh Kuklani, Paul Panek Apr 2020

Accelerating Reinforcement Learning With Prioritized Experience Replay For Maze Game, Chaoshun Hu, Mehesh Kuklani, Paul Panek

SMU Data Science Review

In this paper we implemented two ways of improving the performance of reinforcement learning algorithms. We proposed a new equation to prioritize transition samples to improve model accuracy, and by deploying a generalized solver of randomly-generated two-dimensional mazes on a distributed computing platform, our dual-network model is available to others for further research and development. Reinforcement Learning is concerned with identifying the optimal sequence of actions for an agent to take in order to reach an objective to achieve the highest score in the future. Complex situations can lead to computational challenges in terms of both finding the best answer …

The Accessibility Of Mathematical Notation On The Web And Beyond, Jason White Apr 2020

The Accessibility Of Mathematical Notation On The Web And Beyond, Jason White

Journal of Science Education for Students with Disabilities

This paper serves two purposes. First, it offers an overview of the role of the Mathematical Markup Language (MathML) in representing mathematical notation on the Web, and its significance for accessibility. To orient the discussion, hypotheses are advanced regarding users’ needs in connection with the accessibility of mathematical notation. Second, current developments in the evolution of MathML are reviewed, noting their consequences for accessibility, and commenting on prospects for future improvement in the concrete experiences of users of assistive technologies. Recommendations are advanced for further research and development activities, emphasizing the cognitive aspects of user interface design.

Science Teachers’ Perceptions Of Implementing Literacy Practices In The (Grades 9–12) Science Classroom, Wesley Russ Apr 2020

Science Teachers’ Perceptions Of Implementing Literacy Practices In The (Grades 9–12) Science Classroom, Wesley Russ

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

Teachers in the (Grades 9–12) science classroom are adjusting to using literacy practices in their pedagogy. This is in response to school systems adopting the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). The purpose of this hermeneutic, phenomenological study was to explore the perceptions of teachers experiencing this change. The research questions of this study were focused on how teachers in the (Grades 9–12) science classroom perceive the implementation of literacy practices and professional development needs. The study site was a large Northeastern public school system that adopted the educational reform measures, at a single …

Educational Equity And Informal Stem Field Trip Programming, Sal Alper Apr 2020

Educational Equity And Informal Stem Field Trip Programming, Sal Alper

Master's Theses

Informal STEM field trip programming is a large, yet under-researched area of the education landscape. Informal STEM education providers are often serving a more privileged section of society, leading to a risk of perpetuating inequalities seen throughout the education landscape. In an attempt to address the lack of research, this thesis explores the relationship between educational equity and informal STEM field trips. The intention was to collect data using a critical ethnography approach to the methods of qualitative questionnaire and interviews of informal STEM educators. A change in circumstances from the global pandemic of COVID-19 caused a shift in this …

A Transdisciplinary Laboratory Course Increases Stem Retention, Caroline A. Brown, Royce Dansby-Sparks, Sarah Formica, Margaret (Meg) Smith Apr 2020

A Transdisciplinary Laboratory Course Increases Stem Retention, Caroline A. Brown, Royce Dansby-Sparks, Sarah Formica, Margaret (Meg) Smith

Georgia Journal of Science

STEM retention is a national challenge. Recent literature suggests that students leave STEM for many reasons including lack of context, lack of academic preparedness for entering college, and challenges with quantitative reasoning. These observations compelled us to design an introductory, transdisciplinary STEM lab course which we describe herein. This course was designed to integrate the disciplines of biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics with activities that engage students in real-world, inquiry-based exercises and help students develop quantitative reasoning skills. Assessment showed that students in this STEM lab have higher STEM retention rates than those in equivalent disciplinary courses. The largest gains …
